Incredibly hard decision to make, but I wish the best of luck to @Sharkstrong and @11 Eleven as Toronto will be a great home to them. Obviously the side effect of going all in is that if you don't win it all, the offseason is bound to be a tough one.

So go ahead, make jokes about how Davos is entering a rebuild again because haha it's so funny......but seriously, I gotta clean up the mess I made from trying to compete at the cost of our future

Welp, what can I say I love to trade draft picks.

Haha, for real though @Sharkstrong and @11 Eleven both represent great pick ups for where our roster is currently at. I need to make sure we have some more capable wingers what with having so much centers on the roster currently so Scoringson provides that. And for me acquiring another D via trade was always going to be about getting a top tier player and looking past the Tzuyu era. Fish is a highly underrated D with a fantastic contract who is a awesome example of our affiliate program. Super happy to bring both these members on board and had no problem with the big time offering both because of the consistency, team fit and quality of members coming back and getting to keep cap space to play in the free agency space.

Thanks for the deal @ShawnGlade I wish you best of luck in the draft fields.

Your Houston Bulls are S68 Founder's Cup Champions!

We have good and bad seasons boys but here we are, making history. I know that next season will be tough because of many reasons - Sean McGee, our backbone and the best goalie in VHLM will probably move to VHL, Khalabib Stiopic, beast from Cocos islands is heading to VHL, Soren Jensen, one of the best players I have had pleasure having on the roster, Nate Telker is going to make a name for himself in VHL. All of the Howe's that are going into VHLM Draft will be scattered around and we will see them on many different teams. We did it with guys who will become legends and win cups and awards in VHL, guys who are amazing presence in the LR and I am fortunate to have you all on our team. We can't pass on without saying a word about our captain Edu Stava who has been amazing as our 2nd line centre and guys like Ferdinando Jokinen and Erik Summers who helped us be the best defensive team in VHLM!

This is for all of you guys and I can't say big enough thanks! Let's party now and enjoy every moment of it!

I’ve always said the VHL is about the community, the sim just just a small part of it; numbers on a screen that maybe 10% of the league is happy with at any given time. The sim isn’t enough to keep people around, and it certainly wasn’t back in the day when it received 3 updates at best per season. Maybe that’s how Scotty was so good, maybe he updated himself every week. Anyway, I digress.

Its actually kinda tough to reminisce about the early early VHL years purely because of how long ago they were. 12 years is unheard of in sim league terms. Like I was 15 when the VHL started. I was partway through high school. Meanwhile I graduated university 6 years ago, Got a job, got married, movies cities for work, bought a house, and have a kid on the way. Meanwhile the VHL is still here, chugging away.

What’s kinda funny is how accurate is “ole boys” are when we say new people couldn’t have survived back in the day even though no one wants to hear it. It’s not to say people couldn’t have adapted but it is true. Waiting around 3-5 days for your grades, then up to a week for the updater, then what could be months before it went into the sim. Hitting 100 TPE a season, so about 800 total, was something only for the most adamant TPE whores; now it’s not even a landmark and can easily be doubled. If we had these systems now the league would be dead in a month, it’s just too strict. And that’s just the league, let alone the members. We were fucking animals, ripping each other apart. Was quite brutal to be honest. There’s no rose tinted glasses here, the league was a rough place way back when.

    A VHL Story

A recent conversation got me thinking about what the VHL story has been over the years. There is much that goes into the success of a sim league and I believe that longevity is often due to the dedication of the members. For me specifically this makes me think of long-time members that have dedicated so much of their lives to running teams or listening to players who bare their souls in the early hours of the mornings. My thoughts drift to all the players of the team I have managed in my short tenure as a VHLM GM. All the stories that I shared with them, the stories they shared with me and what we created together.

The VHL theme week gave me an opportunity to look back and think how much long-time members, specifically ones that have been around from Season One, must have seen throughout their seemingly endless VHL careers. The Article I would have loved to have had the opportunity to write here is one that I can not tell as a recent member. I would tell the back story of the league, but the truth is that those are not my stories to tell nor could a new member do them justice. There are indeed some things that the “ole boys” know best and this topic is one of them. The things I am referring to are not necessarily tracked on the forums these days. They are the VHL narrative. To explain this thought fully you must understand that there is a  story that is told on each sim site. Simplified, it is both the interaction of users and their players. Basically,  it is they dynamic created when a bunch of people who throw their sticks in a pile and decide to play a game of pick up hockey. You find friends and enemies. People who are smart or dumb, maybe that one annoying person who is just waiting for you to fall so they can laugh or even the person who leaves halfway through the game for no reason. You find all that and everything else in-between, to say the lease it makes for a riveting story that gets it's hooks into even the most somber person.  I can honestly say that I doubt this perspective gets explored much. As it is a sideshow to what is usually seen as the main event, I am of course talking about the sim. However, in my personal experience I can say that a printout of what happened in fake hockey is not what keeps me around. To this day I can say the users and their stories, whether fictional or real is what keeps me coming back for more.

So in my attempt to honor the old boys, I am using this VHL.com to reach out and inspire the new guys to write their own narrative. Reach out and create a story. Make connections with the people you meet and have some fun. after all, that is what the VHL has been since inception and that is what we as new members should continue to do in order to honor those who have put so much into a seemingly simple sim site.

    HC Davos Dynamo Jersey Retirement

It's been a hot minute since the last time Davos properly retired a jersey number, we'd have to go back to the S40s. Also, this is the first jersey to be retired in the Shawn-era of Davos which spans 5 seasons now. I'd like to bring back a time of retiring jerseys, but not just willy nilly. Here in Switzerland, we want to recognize the players that have exemplified perfect leadership and camaraderie, and those who have shaped Davos into the team we are today. Today, I'd like to recognize a special player, who was the last remaining piece on Davos from the Tyler-era of the team.

    Alvaro Jokinen
    #39
    S62-67
It was decided after last season, Jokinen deserved his spot in the rafters in Davos. The team captain for 5 of his seasons, Jokinen was the perfect role model for the youth movement in S64, and the perfect leader for a team who made a surprise cup run in S66. Jokinen just missed out on being a part of the S61 championship team, but was determined to be the #1 guy to bring them back. Despite only making the playoffs twice in his 6 year career, Alvaro always kept a level head and was an active voice in the locker room. He's often been talked about the greatest some have ever played with. While he was never the most active player outside of Davos, you'd occasionally see Alvaro chatting with other members of the league, and they've had nothing but positive words about the Finnish defenseman. Apart from his great personality, Jokinen was an integral part in bring Davos back to the post season in S66 after a 3 year drought. Not only did he meet expectations, he smashed them as he led the Dynamo to a conference finals appearance. While Davos was sub-par for a majority of his career, he never had anything negative to say and he was respected by all, moreso by his GM, Shawn. There's no one more fitting to be the first jersey retirement under the current management group, and this was an easy decision to make sure no one ever wears this number again.

It is with great pleasure and honor that I, as Davos GM for the past 5 seasons and as teammate of Jokinen, get to announce the retirement of his #39 forever in Davos as we forever immortalize Alvaro Jokinen in HC Davos Dynamo history.

    Quotes:
"I learnt a lot playing with Jokinen in my rookie season. I attribute a lot of my success to him on and off the ice. There is no better person deserving of this honour than Alvaro"
    -Bjorn Scoringsonn

"Alvaro is a great guy in the locker room. Coming into the league as a young guy, he was someone that I leaned on and learned a lot from about the league and really about myself. I know it can be cliche, but I learned a lot about how to get the most out of me and made me a better person and player. He's a great guy in the locker room and his performance on the ice speaks for itself. I do want to congratulate him as he deserves this honor. There's no one more deserving of this honor from my time in Davos thank Joky. Congrats man!"
    -Finn Davison

"Al was a leader in every sense of the word. He was the guy we all looked up to. Even if he wasn't the star of the show, he'd work his ass off. It's gonna be different without him."
    -Ryuu Crimson

"A true professional and leader for Davos. Playing 432 games in the VHL for the same team is an impressive accomplishment and I was lucky enough to learn from him during my rookie year in Davos."
    -Aston Martin

"Alvaro's unselfishness was as evident on the ice as it was in the locker room. On the ice, he was happy to dish the puck to others, setting them up with great scoring chances. Off the ice, he was friendly and welcoming to all team members. Alvaro happily shared his knowledge for the game and kept team spirits lifted, even during difficult times."
    -Charlie Paddywagon

"Jokinen personified loyalty to a team. He was a great player to play with on the ice and an even better person to hang out with off the ice."
    -Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen

"Even though I wasn't on Davos for most of his career, I still remember him being a great vet in the locker room who helped me ease into the league when I first came in as a rookie. He was always supportive of the team and was a great leader in the LR. One of the best dmen and people to ever suit up for Davos."
    -Elias Dahlberg (former teammate)

"I can't believe his great career is actually over. It was an amazing treat to have Alvaro Jokinen around when I took over, and it was an inspiring experience seeing him always keep his head up no matter how dark the S60s have been for Davos. I wish the best for Alvaro post-retirement, and he'll always have a home in Davos. Thanks for being a great leader my whole time I've been here, you're truly one of a kind"

Doom And Gloom In Calgary For Brick Wahl
These are dark days in Calgary for Brick Wahl.
Earlier on in the season you could have asked Brick if he thought things could get worse in Calgary and we would have answered he could not think of a worst thing happening than John Frostbeard @FrostBeardbeing acquired in a Savvy move by Seattle GM Banackock @Banackock. The fuzzy faced Latvian was one of Wahls close companions on the team and he was amongst the most heartbroken players on Calgary when that news hit.  Which explains why the living Wahl of a Goalie would not have believed anyone who told him that a tougher trade was yet to come. News broke late in the evening that Calgary had made a trade, Brick who is known for being involved in the goings on of upper management was blindsided. This trade came out of nowhere. Without so much as a word Elasmobranch Fish @Sharkstrong had been sent packing to Shawn Glade’s @ShawnGlade HC Davos Dynamos.

Sources close to Wahl say he clutched at his phone in disbelief upon reading the news. It’s not like you can blame the poor guy, two close friends gone within weeks of each other. The Only statement Wahl was willing to make at this time was “There are some people you can not replace in the Roster, it is not about points or winning, they are just worth more than that as people. Elasmobranch Fish is part of what made Calgary feel like a home for me and now with him gone I can honestly say it feels empty” Wahls eyes welled with tears but he blinked them back “ but in the end this is part of hockey and I will do what I can to ensure my teams success, I know he will do the same for his new team. I hope Davos knows what an amazing player they just acquired.” Wahl was asked about what he though about the direction the team was going in, his only answer was “No Comment.”

Better--make the lottery based on a poll that isn't just "Do you want a lottery entry?" Not sure if that was how it was, but I know that's how it works in other sim leagues.

Make the question something interesting, and gather the league's opinion on a subject every week/month, through a poll. Open the thread up for discussion and give all who answer the question an entry. It's a fair system that promotes discussion and doesn't lead to spam. Only way that anyone would get upset over it is the fact that there's no way to cheat the system.
