I want to do a Reddit Blitz for recruitment in photoshop, graphic battle, graphic tutorial/help, and other surrounding areas.  Reddit is a huge community and opportunity for us but it also comes with the huge troll and negative reputation aspect.  We don't want to plaster every sub reddit daily with things or have people with no reddit credibility starting threads there.

I'm looking for more subtle recruiting where people post a portfolio of their work and invite people to join our community.  By joining they will get to show their talents and get constructive responses to help improve their abilities as many of the VHLers have done.  Other methods I'm looking for are sig battles between VHL members, and tutorials/videos/tips on sigs you've made.

People who effectively start the threads there will get the benefit of earning TPE for recruiting new members and can add 1 TPE for that week as part of helping the recruitment crew.  I don't want this to be spammed though so please come to me with the areas you intend to post in so we don't spam the same area.  Also I can partner people up to do a sig battle there.

If this works out we will do this in the future with writing as well.  Same thing where we can show samples of work, ask for critique, and let others come here to get feedback.  Also I know some people have done short story things on Amazon, scripts, and various other writing things that we can use in that regard.

The rest of the community who use reddit will be called upon to post on occasion to give positive feedback on these reddit threads to get exposure.

At the same time police are being counter killed throughout the U.S. the news only shows what gets traction. One story in one small town can get covered for a week and another at the same time in a different part of the U.S. is ignored. National media outlets shouldnt cover celebrity news and local stories just for views.

I just googled infographic and this is what came up graphically if we could make a small full page color infographic about the VHL to use that would be great.  Things like VHL 8 years 500+ registered members that sort of stuff

Teams should always have the option to lead, make decisions, and workout the new GM. The blue team should only be used in cases where the current GM is unable or when asked for support by the GM. I understand the whole wanting to do what's best for the league and the league is bigger than 1 team thing. Bad things happen in real life and blemishes build character, drama, activity, story, and history that makes the VHL what it is. Scouring the VHL for the best person each time handled by the BoG or Admins is just the wrong way to go.

I hate to do this but I'd step down from the MAG to take over this job.  I held this job actually in the past so it won't be new to me.  Also since Seattle has a ton of S46 1st round picks I'm going to be really vested in making us get new members over the next 3 months.  As far as a strategy goes haven't thought about it much but initial thoughts are:

    1) See what we've been doing and evaluate if it has been at all effective.
    2) When I did this before we should send a mass forum email around the trade deadline to the 500+ registered members from not only this forum but any other forum the VHL has ever had.  Let people know its deadline time and the best time to recreate for the next draft.
    3) Look into using reddit effectively seems like our target audience is in there many of our forum members use it but it has to be done right.  You can turn it into negative publicity if done wrong.
    4) Would like to start a poll getting everyone to say where they joined from (could go thread to thread at create a player but people don't always fill that out).
    5) Evaluate social media usage we have half-assed tried facebook, twitter, etc and did it do anything?  If we used to more effectively could it be useful? Or is it completely useless for the VHL?

I'm sure I could come up with some other things after really thinking about it but just my initial thoughts but as I said might have to step down from the Mag after just rejoining for 1 edition.

Does it take skill to be a VHL GM?

After a long hiatus from writing in the VHL Mag I’m back to continue the column I started nearly two years ago.  For the return article I have to thank Boubabi for starting an article about how easy it is to be a VHL GM.  At the core I actually agree with his sentiments but not the rationale behind it. It’s easy to be a VHL GM if you work hard, are willing to adapt, work with your team, and have a little luck.

This is a summary taken from Boubabi’s post entitled:

“My honest opinion: Why it doesn't require any GM skills to succeed.”

What do we really need to be a successful GM here?  Cap space and timing.

Skill isn't needed the Bears and the Legion decided to go through a rebuild process. The problem is, there were simply not many buyers. Therefore, the price went down rapidly and GM who acquired those players had a great bargain.  As a GM, I know who is selling and who isn't but it's simply impossible because well managed teams just don’t have cap space.

Some players in their prime don’t want to stay 3 seasons on a rebuilding team.  The rebuilding GM is somewhat forced to trade the player (to get some sort of return).  Since there's not many buyers who can afford those players, average teams can afford them and suddenly become contenders out of nothing.  Even if you are an average negotiator, the buying team will have, most of the time, the strong side in the negotiation because there's just no other options available.

I feel that I could just scrap everything with horrible trades, not working to develop my intern prospects and just wait for other GMs to do so. I just will take advantage of the market at some point in the off season and this will be enough to have a good team. This way, I could fit under the cap, get player for a cheap price and still be considered as a "good gm", and that's folks, my honest opinion.

To provide full disclosure this is an excerpt of a larger article written but has the general gist of the piece.  His argument is that being a VHL GM is easy you just have to manage Cap Space & Timing.  To do that you just have to take advantage of other team’s cap issues to get players for cheap.  So keep your cap problems to a minimum and take advantage of other team’s cap issues to be successful.

Timing is definitely crucial for being a successful GM when to buy, sell, and rebuild.  If done right you end up with a ton of super prospects or people over paying for your aging veterans.  What happens to that perfect timing though when the super trade you pulled nets a draftee who goes inactive one month later?  What happens when you find the right buyer for a player who doesn’t want to leave?  You burn the bridge with that player who now hates the team when he recreates or in the future as a free agent.

The same goes for managing cap you can try to stagger out your players so that the higher cap players don’t all hit at once.  Older players retire as others move from a rookie to veteran contract that’s great on paper.  Except you can only acquire draft picks for so many seasons so generally you end up with a ton of players from 1-3 seasons apart.  Let’s say you do manage cap perfectly or buy/sell at the right time and all things are going awesome on the way to a Continental Cup.

The problem is your franchise goalie decides he wants to recreate next season to join the same draft class as his real life friend.  Two of your best players don’t like each other and say that if you don’t move the other they are going to just quit the league.  One of your players refuses to sign a new contract because you won’t give him a no trade clause since you planned on trading him anyway to manage your cap situation.  Then to top it all off the league goes crazy and expands again, changes the salary cap structure, or increases the VHLM TPE limit so your draftee won’t actually be coming up this season.

This is not a black or white type of answer.  You don’t know when your best player is going to have to go inactive because of a family emergency.  You don’t know that the player you drafted three seasons ago had a secret plan to join his buddy in free agency.  The most important thing in being a successful GM is the ability to handle and deal with change.  Most GMs set in motion a plan that on paper looks brilliant and they are going to be different win three cups in a row.  Then the shit hits the fan and you have to pivot no matter how great you timed everything and managed the cap.
