  1. Tough trade talks @samx but we got it done. Hoping it's a win for everyone involved, including both players here.

@BOOM we chatted a bit and I gave you my thoughts and all. Tough decision to make, but only considered it because I thought HSK would be a worthy home for you. Looking forward to another fantastic player career from you!

@FrostBeard when I heard you were available, had to try to get you here in Moscow. I know your expectations are lofty, and we'll be sure to meet them. Thrilled to have you on the team!

  2. Condition: If Grimgor Ironhide does not re-sign with Moscow after the S93 season, S94 HSK 2nd becomes S94 HSK 1st, and S94 MOS 3rd becomes the worst of S94 MOS 2nd and S94 WAR 2nd. If both Moscow and Warsaw miss playoffs in S94, the 2nd is deferred to S95 MOS 2nd.

    @samx to confirm.

  3. Thank you for sticking through some of the dark days of Moscow @okochastar, and I'm glad we could get a playoff season and a top 10 individual season for you before we had to let you go. Wishing you the best in VAN as they get a veteran star to jump start their competitive window!

Cheers for the talks @Frank, you're getting a great user and player!

  4. Hello!

As we approach the offseason, we're once again looking to hire GMs for some open positions in the VHLM. We've got a bit of turnover this offseason and are hiring for two teams (and potentially more depending on the VHL/E hirings) - Halifax and Mexico City. Thank you to @ShawnGlade and @hylands for their great work as VHLM GMs, and for all the time and effort they put into their teams and players.

Please comment below if you are interested in any of these teams, and feel free to state a preference for a specific team. We cannot guarantee those preferences being followed if selected for the job, but we'll keep it in mind. We may also find out that we're losing another GM to the VHL hiring cycle, so there is a chance we'll need 3 GMs - so there are plenty of opportunities for all!

Serious applications only in this thread, anything else will be sent to the gulag. Feel free to DM me or Gus with any questions, comments, concerns. Happy to discuss the positions with any interested candidates!

Thank you man, that means a lot. Crazy to think some people still go back and read my old stuff, hopefully once I graduate this spring I can get something like that back up and running! I had a blast making those and keeping track of the drafts

Meant a lot to a first gen like me, so thank you for keeping me around!

    It do be that time!

Figured I'd make a VHL March Madness group for anyone interested in participating. No TPE compensation (for now??? doubt a Blue approves though) but come join in for fun!

      Season 93 VHL Draft Lottery

    Date: February 28, 2024

    Time: 7:00 PM EST

     Hi Everyone,

Before getting into the final draft odds and the lottery itself, a reminder of the rules regarding the Draft Lottery:

    Quote

The first six picks of the first round of the VHL Entry Draft work on a lottery structure. For the purposes of Standings, non-playoff teams will rank 11-16, regardless of Regular Season points earned (i.e. If Toronto finishes in 6th place in the North American conference, but had more points than two European conference Playoff teams, they will be considered 11th Place in the standings, despite finishing with the 9th most points in the league, overall).

The odds for winning the lottery are based on the VHL's regular season standings, and begin as follows as outlined in Section 9.2:

    16th Place: 25.0%
    15th Place: 20.0%
    14th Place: 17.5%
    13th Place: 15.0%
    12th Place: 12.5%
    11th Place: 10.0%

Only non-Playoff teams are eligible for the Draft Lottery. The maximum spots a team can move down is 1 spot. If the result of the lottery still allows teams to move down a maximum of one spot, there will be additional lotteries until teams may no longer move down.

*An additional reminder that, should any subsequent lotteries be needed after 1st Overall has been decided, the odds will change depending on the winning team

i.e. Should a team with 10% odds of winning the lottery win 1st Overall, their "tickets" will be removed from the lottery and the following lottery will be conducted as odds of x/90, rather than x/100.

Please keep in mind that the Draft Lottery Tournament was removed, and is no longer being used to adjust odds after the regular season's conclusion. From the conclusion of the S93 Regular Season and Spirit of Competition rule violations and punishments, these are the final draft lottery odds:

    Quote

    Draft Lottery Odds

     1. Seattle - 10.0%

    2. Davos - 23.0%

    3. Vancouver - 20.5%

    4. Chicago - 18.0%

    5. Warsaw - 15.5%

    6. Riga - 13%

Results will be added here after the lottery:

Presser for the week ending 3/3

    1. Looking back at the playoffs, what positives can we take away from that series?
    2. Raise your hand if you are hyped for next season and playoffs.
    3. It's my birthday on the 3rd, how old will I be?
    4. Would it be fair to say that we put Moscow on the map during the season?
    5. My player has a plan to really push defense up. Do you have a plan for your player?
    6. I am going to kick back and relax during this offseason. What are your plans?

    1. I think getting a very young team some playoff experience and battling it out against a tough, experienced HSK team was good for morale and a sign that we can definitely compete with top EU teams.

    2. Hand is raised, super excited to see the growth we can achieve this offseason and how we can start next season!

    3. Ripe young age of 12. Oozing youthfulness!

    4. I'd agree with that. I think even in this PC thread we have other players saying that Moscow has made a splash, and @badcolethetitan wrote an article highlighting our success in season and draft capital as well. GMs are definitely on notice around the league.

    5. For Syko, it's just improving in every area as much as possible. Want to be a top goalie next season before I'm off my ELC.

    6. Pretty much the same, got some contract negotiations done quickly in the offseason, now I'll just have to focus on scouting and league admin things, along with a bit of trading. But it'll be a quiet offseason, hopefully!

All strats, yeah! Idc. Just where do you draw the line of “tanking” and “anti spirit of competition” then.

That was my two cents though. Happy Monday y’all :)

Yeah I think that's something you could, and should, bring up to Blues. While GMs generally squabble with each other when transgressions occur, I still think that the most effective way to hold everyone to the rules is by policing each other and bring up infractions as you see them. I don't expect Blues to be sitting there looking at every team's strats throughout the season.

And personally, I tend to consider spirit of competition to lean mainly towards the human/bots/inactives piece vs the general tanking instance. Because I think ever team will tank at some point or the other, especially when we incentivize trades mid-season via cap hit reduction. Tanking and rebuilding are fairly synonymous, but you're right that there's no clear line there. However, we do have clear lines drawn for backup goalies and bot backup goalies, so that's just what the low hanging fruit is each season.

Davos making that trade is a punishable offense imo. It for sure had a more adverse effect on their roster than SEA G starting over Justin Lion in nine extra games. The league should have vetoed the trade if "Spirit of Competition" means anything other than "can't start bot more than eight games."

Trading players away is always going to be considered a slippery slope if you try to match it up against bot start rules or backup rules. Goalie is a position where every competitive team in the league would prefer to play their better goaltender if we had no rules around it. We have no injuries (league would be chalked if we did) or endurance as you say, but that'd arguably hurt skaters a lot more and we'd almost certainly have to contract the league in half to be able to roll a full 4 lines plus have some sort of system to replace players in your lineup entirely. So lets just rule that out for now as a way too complicated situation.

While we can't go to a rebuilding team and say "hey, you're not allowed to get value out of what you have when your season is lost already," we can still maintain the base of this league which is that human players matter more than bots.

If the team is running specific strategies (all PHY, no OFF or DEF), rebuilding and then trades all their “higher” players for a low pick… seems like there’s some deliberate tanking happen. Isn’t that what the rule tries to prevent? 1+1+1=3 but what the hell do I know :P

Should report to Blues if you see this though, no? Not sure if you've already done it, just saying you should if you haven't. Though if it's just line strats and not team strats, it's near useless in our version like ice time sliders lol.

The Spirit of Competition rule doesn't actually state anything specifically about bot backups, that is just simply the only aspect of the rule which seems to be enforced. Why should "significant/reasonable efforts" not be required with regards to fifth/sixth forwards, or third/fourth defenders.

    Quote

    15.3 - Spirit of Competition

    i. Best Available Roster - General Managers are expected to put forth their best available roster, every game of the season. Managers found to be violating the spirit of competition within the league, especially, but not limited to, any form of tanking, will face punishment, at the discretion of the League Commissioners. Punishment will range up to, and including, but not limited to: Draft Pick Forfeiture, Salary Cap Fines, GM Dismissal.

    Example:

If a team in S73 is found to be playing CPU Players, or inferior Inactive Players, over better Human Created Players, they may face reduced Draft Lottery Odds, or possibly the loss of their 1st Round Pick entirely, in the S74 VHL Entry Draft. Depending on the severity of their transgression, the General Manager may also face dismissal.

ii. CPU Goaltenders - Teams may not start a CPU Goaltender for more than 8 games in a season, when a human created goaltender above 250 TPA is available. If the team does not have a human created goaltender on their roster, they must make a reasonable attempt to acquire one, whether that is through trade, free agency, or the VHL Entry Draft.

Have to read the whole section to see the bot backup bit. Its one of the explicitly defined portions within that rule that is easiest to uphold due to the quantitative nature.

  12. 41 minutes ago, Daniel Janser said:

No-one has ever enforced (at least not to my knowledge) the spirit of competition rule when an active human has been played instead of bots, as long as the mandatory 8 backup games have been complied with.

You're mixing up two different rules here. The Louth rule specifically requires every VHL team to play their backup goalie 8 times in a season. It doesn't have to be just 1 goalie, could be any combination of backups as long as a single goalie on their roster doesn't have more than 64 starts in a season. Not GP, just starts. From what I recall, this rule was to ensure teams would be forced to play their secondary goalies since there are almost always a few human backup goalies in all seasons. If competitive teams aren't required to start their backups, GM's will take advantage of it.

The Spirit of Competition rule simply states that if you have a bot backup goalie, the bot can't start more than 8 games in a season. The logic is that pretty much every VHL-eligible human created goalie will be better than a bot, attribute wise, and we should always be playing user created players over bots. If you don't have a human goalie, you must make a significant/reasonable effort to acquire one. That's the rule that was broken here, hence why overplaying human backups is never punished, since there's no rule around their max starts.
