  1. I feel like I don't even know half the guys in here anymore, but great job running this thing (whoever you are)

Also, for the love of god, create new threads!

  2. My favourite memory is today. To know this thing is still alive and well is an incredible feeling. The sheer volatility of sim leagues around 2006-2008 meant that if you lasted beyond 6 months you were doing something very well.  And here we are 10 years later.

People come and people go, but the VHL was so very fortunate to have such a passionate and giving community who kept driving this thing forward - even during the rough stretches. I'd glad people are still deriving enjoyment from the league, makes the effort everyone put in worth it.

I'm still a fucking prick, but thought I'd just say something nice for once. Carry on ladies and gents

So before they add me to the Calgary LR, I want to say thanks for having me here. Ultimately it came down to cups. I have been here for so long in the league and my seasons -> ration is horrible. I wish you all luck and down the road I could find myself in your neighbourhood!

Let me clarify as well. These suggestions both mine and even the notion of changing the player update scale isn't to target just high TPE earners or even middling TPE earners who find they have nothing to spend TPE on. It isn't about "TPE inflation."

We were a point task league. All of you know this. In order to build a HoF player, your career needed to be made up of mostly point tasks. Even when welfare got introduced, that was the case. That isn't the case any longer. I'm sorry, but it isn't. It isn't because welfare is too powerful, it's because our update scale has remained stagnant in the face of everybody understanding what attributes matter and what don't. I mean most of the members here are on at least player #3, if not more.

You know who suffers the most from these changes? New players, new members, first gens. Why? Because any of us could do a PT every week, have a league job for 2 seasons (one of which doesn't count if we retire at the right time at deadline) and by draft time we are at 300+ TPE, stay active hard doing PT's for what, another season at best? And then boom. Then you can literally COAST your way to a player who has a chance to lead the league in scoring. @Draper can confirm that other members than just me and him, some of whom even GM's have stated they already feel like they can coast and some aren't even at depreciation yet. It comes down to everyone knowing that we have useless attributes, and if they aren't building something special like a hitter, or a faceoff person. They end up in a distinct advantage where 500-600 TPE can pretty much make their player high 90's or 99 in the attributes that matter.

First gens don't have that advantage. They simply don't. So we sit here going "why don't first gens post PT's and stay active?" Because the competition is absolutely skewed. Even to keep pace with how good some of the semi active to welfare players who have been here forever a first gen would have to do triple the work. They would have to have a league job and PT every week just try to catch up. And then sure, they pass the players eventually in total TPE if they stay the course and stay active. But so what? Their players aren't going to better in the sim because of that. Just like anything, when we get enough quality players it's just a roll of the dice really. I just don't think that makes sense in any capacity.

If members want to be elite level, and by that I mean 99 in the attributes that matter most, then you should have to do point tasks for more of your career than you claim welfare.

I agree. The whole reason these leagues worked in the first place was the competitiveness behind every TPE you earned giving your player the slight advantage in the sim.

Again, this seems to be more of a Welfare issue which I don't pretend to know much about. As much as you want to encourage old members (like me) to stick around, it shouldn't be at the detriment to new blood in the league.

Why don't we just each, pick a type of player we would build, be given a set amount of TPE to build them based on a new update scale, build those players and do some test sims with them all privately just to see if things fall in line?

To me, the whole reason we proposed changes is because someone who works their butt off in Season 1-3 can create a player who gets elite level stats even if they only claim welfare/do minimal work the rest of their career. That is because it's quite easy to get some of the attributes to 99, and as we all know some attributes mean more than others. Even if your case @Knight you talk about how having a difference in scale between checking and scoring would hurt, however that is only if you want to hit. Which keep in mind doesn't guarantee you an award. If you pot 70 points, but have 400 hits, the person with 100 points and 350 hits is winning that top two way before you are. Meaning Scoring, Skating, Defense, and Passing are and have pretty much functioned as "the" attributes to put up to have any success in the league.

That's a great idea. It would certainly take some effort, but I think that's a wonderful way to test things.

Fair enough. Can I ask what is wrong with that? This verges more on the Welfare debate which I'm not entirely sure where the league stands.

I'll use what you've said to illustrate what I meant. Having say, checking, as a secondary attribute means it's more efficient to update.

The difference between 70 points and 100 points is a 42% increase.

The difference between 400 hits and 350 hits is a 14.2% increase.

If they were proportional (14.2% increase and decrease), you'd have one player with 70 points and 400 hits, the other with 350 hits, but only 80 points.

Essentially, you're promoting scorers adding points to checking giving them a disproportionate advantage over someone who focuses solely on being a power forward.  Of course, the other side of the argument is that given you'd have to spend less TPE updating checking, you'd have more to spend on scoring to level things out. However, this somewhat dilutes player builds which is what I am proposing we avoid doing.

I disagree with a blanket statement being assigned to those attributes being the one's to have any success in the league. Of course, the higher any attribute is the more likely you will be successful. Does higher scoring make you score more? Certainly. Does higher passing make you a better passer? Certainly. But depending on your desired player build, some of those 5 attributes you mentioned are useless. I don't want to sound cocky, but I have an extremely good grasp of STHS and how each attribute will affect a certain player type. Naturally, to be a goal scorer you would think that skating is a fundamental skill you need. You don't though. How about to be a good play maker? Surely you need mad skills with the puck (Puck Control). Nope, you don't. To be a two-way forward you must need defense right? Nope, definitely not. It's not exactly intuitive.

That is one of the main reasons I am hesitant to have primary and secondary attributes.

I actually talked about it in a podcast. Most likely no one listened to it.

My point was that making certain attributes easier to level somewhat trivializes certain player builds. By making them cheaper, you are promoting certain attributes (Oh, I can get checking from 70 to 80 rather than scoring from 97 to 99!). For example, as a power forward I wouldn't want others to be able to add to checking because they get much more bang for their buck than adding to scoring in the 90's. They shouldn't be disadvantaged in that way. It's also very difficult to determine which attributes are primary and which are secondary. The specialty attributes are always going to be useless unless we can find a way for them to be valued in the sim engine. I have no issues with promoting those attributes.

If you think how much the league has evolved, one of the only things to not change has been the update scale. And, considering the vast inflation of TPE, that's really quite ridiculous.

I am of the belief that it should be a real accomplishment to hit 99 in a category. It should require a significant sacrifice elsewhere for your player to be elite in a given category. Everyone is on the same footing if we change the update scale. Just because we can no longer max out 5-6 attributes doesn't put us at a disadvantage - because no one else can. Making members choose where they want their TPE to go to, rather than deciding which category they want to get to 90 first is what we should be encouraging.

Perhaps a good way to analyse it, which I have no intention on doing, is to roughly determine the average TPE a top-TPE earner has by their 6th season (before depreciation). Then, determine what an elite scorer/playermaker/power forward attributes should look like. Create an update scale based on those figures, and everything else should fall into place. And if that means you have to make changes to depreciation, then so be it.

Anyway, those are my fairly vague thoughts. I realize the league has moved on a fair bit from when I was commissioner, but that's how I would approach it if I were still blue. Take it for what it's worth.

Have we ever thought about editing and creating Wikipedia pages on the concept of sim leagues, and sites like the VHL/SHL. It may not seem like it but marketing is easier when you say sim league and someone can Google the term and get instant information on the subject. And our website link to boot.

I created one for the VHL (along with one for sim leagues in general) about 5-6 years ago. Spent a whole day making them look pro. The next day they were deleted. I still haven't recovered from it :(
