While I think it’s fair to question the weight of which Hits are considered, I don’t think it’s fair to say they’re useless. As far as I know, a hit knocks the puck off the player every time. It doesn’t always create a turnover, but it is at least one of the few stats that somewhat tangibly show something.

GMotY is tough to vote for, I have no comment.

.sniffuM got a reaction from Beketov in S79 HOF Discussion
Looking at the current HOF players as well as those around Kellinger's area in terms of PPG that are also not in the HOF, looks like there is a solid explanation for everyone in and around his PPG range for why they'd be in over him (they played defenseman, they had a lot more hits, they played in the more spread-out modern era, etc.). However, for long-term ballot entries, I do feel like now is a pretty good time for Holik considering there's Hogan and no slam-dunk second candidate. Maybe I'm a sucker for peripheral second level goalie stats, but those 88 shutouts are pretty sexy. Among comparable goalies (in terms of save percentage which imo is the best indicator that isolates a goalie's quality of play), the only goalies in his stratosphere that played at least 7 seasons are Torstein Ironside (worth some more consideration imo for the .925 and a Shaw in S58, although doesn't have something big like 2nd all time in shutouts) and Ariel Weinstein (who doesn't have any awards and is already a couple points lower in save percentage, 8th all time in shutouts at 71 but that's not enough strength in the periphery numbers imo to boost his case into legit contention). I feel like this is a good chance to get someone in who has long been on the ballot but not quite had the chance to get in, and by looking at Holik versus all goalies and Kellinger versus all skaters, even though Holik had some overlap with some of the better goalies of all time there isn't really a direct comparison of era and performance that leaves him in the dust and his performance feels like it scales better to historical relevance than Kellinger.

My other vote goes to Hogan pretty easily, he's due his HOF spot imo.

Lastly, if you're considering me for builder, I am of course honored but want to be 100% transparent: in my ~3 season run as a VHLM commish, I did some work to help Bana get the start of one season organized and then largely did nothing. I did tell him I wanted to be his backup and for him to let me know if he needed help which he never really did before firing me, but I honestly did nothing at all on the job and thus it shouldn't really weigh at all positively on anyone's consideration of my position as a builder. If you think I deserve it off the merit of my 1 HOFer, my Warsaw GM tenure, and my general presence in the league over time, then vote for me. I'd personally vote for CowboyInAmerica, Josh, or Solas (was in the builder discussion last year but not this year) before I vote for myself.

Going slightly nuts in lockdown already, but luckily I still have some sim leagues to distract me. I simply want to say thanks to everyone involved in running and participating in the VHL(or in fact, any sim or online group activities). From the blue team, to mods and updaters, simmers, VSN contributers, GM's, AGM's and every single person active in the VHL with a player, thank you. In times like these, you are all providing a welcome piece of entertainment and a chance to interact with others, despite the huge distances and timezone differences involved. You don't have to give up your time and effort to keep the league running but you do, and I simply wanted to say thanks and you are appreciated.

.sniffuM reacted to Telkster in Malmo continues to cruise
    Intro
Malmo have continued to make big strides this season. From the rise of the offence to the powerhouse it is today, to the newly improved defence with Kaberle’s presence being felt, to the great goalie tandem that has been making it hard to knock the barn doors down. Malmo are getting contributions from almost every angle you can think of. In this media spot, I’ll be going through the positions and breaking down who’s doing well and why, who’s on a hot streak, etc. So let’s get into it!

    Offence
At this point, I could probably write a whole story book of just how lethal this offence has become. Unfortunately I only have so much time in a day, but we can certainly point out the highlights, and it starts with Odinsson. He may be worried that I’m jinxing it, but I’ll say it yet again. Odinsson, who currently tops the league with 87 points, is on pace for 150 points. With each passing game, that pace only becomes more and more impressive. Telker follows behind him with an impressive season of his own with 74 points through 43 games. As we keep going down the list, you can really start to see the depth. Sosa is having a stellar season with 63 points. Muffbeav has 57 points, and Deathwalker is on pace for a slight upgrade to last seasons  58 points, as he maintains a ppg at 43 points. I don’t think I have any worry’s for this offensive core going forward.

    Defence
Kaberle has been leading the charge from the backend ever since he arrived from a trade about 20 games ago. 24 points in 21 games is about what you expect from your #1 defender on a contending team. Wu has provided really nice depth and chipped in a lot this year. With 35 points in 43 games, he’s on pace for a season best. Sova is still going strong with 29 points so far, but he’s on pace for a little over 50 points for a nice boost from his rookie season. Kamenov may be slightly off pace to what most of his prior seasons look like, it makes sense because he is up there in age. I think another reason is a good one too, and that’s pressure. I think Malmo was always looking for one defender to really step up and take the reigns, I think the addition of Kaberle really helped spread out the top 4. And now no one really has to be the “man”.

    Goalers
Let’s start with the backup for this one. Since my last article, Carson only had a handful of games if that. Now, you almost can’t count his games on both hands. He holds a solid 5-3 record, which is exactly what you want from a backup. While his underlying stats have suffered a bit since, it’s a small sample size of games to really judge these numbers as a negative. Tretiak continues to roll on and be a beast. He has a 26-9 record, with a .921 Sv%. This is every thing and more that you want out of a starting goalie. And I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t carry the Nighthawks to a playoff final.

That’s it for this week! Let’s keep rolling Nighthawks.💪

.sniffuM reacted to fishy in dear diary (round 6): i like welfare
    Dear diary,

I claimed welfare last week for the first time in about a year. I don’t want to say that I’m a bit of a perfectionist–there are a lot of things that I don’t dedicate time and energy to in effort to make it as high quality as possible. Take my media spots! I’ve stated multiple times that I don’t proofread, and I’ve even written a whole article whose main takeaway was “I wanted to answer a question I had but realized it was too hard, so I didn’t find the answer.” For about 500 words, I talked about how I learned nothing other than the fact that the answer to a question I had was too complex for me to figure out.

That being said, I do like to keep things tidy. For a year, especially through school, I took time to create crosswords, spend an hour or so in a microsoft-paint equivalent software creating a graphic (that I was honestly pretty happy with, only to get a .5/10 review and be told that they hope this isn’t the standard for graphics. You know who you are, and politely fuck you), write shitty articles, and record podcasts with friends just for those 6 TPE a week. However, as I’m working over 40 hours a week, trying to maintain healthy relationships with my friends, family, and myself, getting those two extra TPE doesn’t really have a great place in my life.

I’m still around, doing the mod things, lurking gen chat, whatever. But 2 more TPE to shit out an article about how my player isn’t doing well, how SS Hornet cursed Chicago (sorry Wolf, nothing personal, I don’t even check sim results anymore), or doing think pieces on the current state of the league just doesn’t feel worth it. I’ve never been super into the role playing aspect of the league–I’m not Matty Socks, he’s a fictional thing with only a surface-layer personality that I don’t relate to. I don’t follow hockey and the rules aren’t something that my brain is willing to retain, so it’s really difficult for me to dive head-first into the league from that perspective.

Claiming welfare was sweet. So, so sweet. I know a handful of people who are earning as fast as they can now in order to be able to get the 5-TPE pension. I’m one of those people, staying on the grind so that I’ll only miss out on 1 TPE a week instead of 2.

But man, with the league being somewhat stagnant lately (sorry E fans, I just can’t get into something that hasn’t started yet), I haven’t found much inspiration for creating content. I don’t know if this is temporary, and if it is, then whatever.

I’ve seen plenty of people talk about how TPE really is not as big of a deal as everyone makes it out to be. Beketov is one who consistently comments on the “TPE whores” in this league. I used to be one of them, so I completely understand wanting to keep a tidy update log with your pretty little 13 or 14/week. On the other hand though, welfare is great. I love welfare. I can contribute to the league in ways other than writing bad, 500-word articles, making low-quality graphics, or recording podcasts with friends where we talk about the league for 15 out of 50 minutes.

Who knows. I’m tired and honestly kinda bored, but I’m not surprised. That always happens when I find new interests–I dedicate a bunch of time and energy into it for a while, then I get bored. The excitement will come back soon.

Almost every good team that has bought over the past few seasons has ended up worse for wear after the fact. Only exceptions I can think of are Malmo this season (who really needed that defensive upgrade) and Chicago when they added Winter a few seasons ago. Warsaw somehow lost over 10 shots a game going from regressed Gino Digiannantonio to Chris Hylands a few seasons ago, and recovered a bit but not all the way when Hylands switched to D and muffbeav switched to forward.

That is actually entirely untrue. I built a spreadsheet to test because I felt like it was false and had to dig in:

631 era-adjusted points vs. 571 era-adjusted points. Again with the first 3.5 for Kastelic on defense.

Not that this is a pro-Kastelic campaign, although after seeing the numbers I have the start of a desire to run some other candidates through to see how they compare to my boy.

    Here's the input btw:

The adjustment ratio for the given year is the goals per team for that year divided by the average goals per team per season in the post-contraction era. Unfortunately, I could not come up with a better way to input data for this other than manually punching in from the index's Team Stats page, so I'm not going all the way back in history.

I wouldn't say the league has been less active, although with recruitment having been largely cut off the past few seasons there aren't as many new people coming in so maybe the league's a little more splintered. Everybody getting tired of everybody else's shit, you know?

This season's been really competitive and interesting to follow though. All 8 NA teams were competing for a playoff spot until Toronto decided to sell, and the EU is almost as competitive as well.

Let's get the inevitable first impression out of the way: coming up with stupid tournament ideas is stupid and should be responded to as such.

However, I do not think this would be a stupid tournament idea.

With the E league coming into existence next season, I think it would be cool to run a one-time tournament, this season only, which would include all players who would be eligible to play in the E league currently. It could be part of the E league hype on both the player end and the league end.

My suggestion for the layout is as follows:
Announce the tournament and hire GMs (make it clear that tournament GM hiring will be completely separate from E league hiring). Make sure said GMs are reliable and consistently around, and have them participate in a publicly-viewable draft thread where their teams are chosen out of a pool of all available players. Draftees must be both active and between 200-400 TPE. Run the tournament and make a big deal out of it Profit
Obviously, there would be more to iron out than that, but I think it would be a cool way to keep the E league fresh in people's minds now that the initial hype has died down and we're waiting a whole other season for things to get set up more completely.

Thoughts? Opinions? Is this stupid? I'm willing to help run this if we decide this is cool.

    Dear diary,

I don’t know what to write about but I am too particular to claim welfare for a week so I’m here. It’s much more difficult to write point tasks when you don’t pay attention to the league.

Socks didn’t do shit at the awards for last season, and honestly, I’m not really surprised. I’m pretty unbothered - I’ve probably mentioned before that I could not care less about the Hall of Fame. I think it’s neat and fun, I’m sure that it’s fun and exciting to get a player into the Hall of Fame, but I have absolutely no interest in getting my panties in a twist about trying to get a player in. It’s one of those things that I have no control over, so I can’t bring myself to be competitive about it - with the amount of players in the league, there’s a larger pool of people who can be voted in. From what I understand, Hall of Fame entry is largely dependent on cup and award wins. Sure, I could cup hunt and go into free agency after every contract expires, but it really just… doesn’t feel worth it.

Awards are somewhat arbitrary, anyway. Yeah yeah yeah, I sound like an annoying “nuke the bog”er, but that’s not my intention. The awards presentations point out different aspects of a player in award wins, and I really just don’t know the stats that are considered in discussions about who wins. I’m not upset because the only thing awards are worth in my book is 1 TPE.

I also recognize that I probably sound like an annoying first gen with the whole “OOhHhH, well I have more competition than players did in /the old days/ of VHL.” That’s fine. I am an annoying first gen saying that I have more competition than players in earlier seasons because it’s true.

Anyway, congrats to the recent Hall of Fame inductees. I hope you are proud of the sim luck you had in conjunction with the blessing of BoG members (I think they vote on HoF?? I don’t know for sure but I don’t think I’m wrong). It’s also pretty neat to see Hatter get his first gen player inducted.

I miss podcasting. Writing sucks. I also feel like I could get by with saying shit that I didn’t have to worry about people picking apart because nobody was listening to the podcasts I was doing. It’s been neat to see more people take up the podcasting gig, and I give huge props to people who can do solo podcasts that don’t end up terrible. I don’t think I could do that, no self deprecation, I just feel like I would run out of things to say because I usually don’t have anything to say in the first place. Writing gives me a place to flesh out my thoughts, which means I can usually get more out of a single idea when I write it down; on the other hand, I have to write it down and that really is not the look.

Maybe I should learn how to actually do graphics. Another time
