Somewhat overshadowed by the news of the impending introduction of the VHLE, a magnificent season in the second tier in S78 may have been overlooked by VHL folks, but those involved were rewarded with a treat. Despite the Yukon Rush acting as resident steamroller and obliterating everything in their path en route to their 6th  Founder’s Cup.

With the increasingly deep S80 draft class making their way into the dispersal draft and soon into the VHLM stats leaderboards, next season should be an exciting one. But before we close the curtains on the past season, let’s take some time to appreciate the most exceptional players of the frame. Later in the show, we’ll reveal the VHLM GM voted awards, but first, let’s dive into this seasons’ statistical leaders!

  • Ledge changed the title to VSN Presents: The S78 VHLM Awards Show

Top Defenseman Award "Ryan Sullivan Trophy"

The Ryan Sullivan Trophy is awarded to the league’s best defender, in honour of one of the best there ever was. As a defenceman myself, I can relate to the pressures of being both the goaltender’s best friend and an aid to the forwards in the offensive zone, while receiving arguably the least credit and the most blame on the team. It’s a stressful position where only the truly dedicated players can succeed.

Our runner-up was one of the most electric first gens in the VHLM this season. After being selected 9th overall by the Prague Phantoms, the phenom decided to head back to the budding powerhouse Rush to take on a large role on a championship team. With 87 assists and 108 points from the blueline, he was showing up on scoring leaderboards everywhere you looked, and led D men in scoring. He also chipped in 117 blocked shots and 128 penalty minutes to solidify his status as dominant all-around defenceman. He’ll be joining a scrappy Prague team where he’ll battle for ice time with seasoned veterans. Let’s hear it for:

:yuk:

Nathan Powers!

@JB123

Our S78 Ryan Sullivan Trophy recipient comes from a very esteemed member, so when he started to take the VHLM by storm, not many were surprised. While not quite the prolific offensive dynamo as Yukon teammate Powers, he still managed to clock 97 points, good for 4th in blueliner scoring. He was also quietly a defensive force,  cracking the plus/minus leaderboard with an incredible +73. But most impressive of all? His 36 goals from the back end! Combined with his meager 58 penalty minutes, he’s the epitome of a responsible, two-way defenceman with a rocket of a shot from the point. Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for your S78 Ryan Sullivan Trophy winner:

Tynan Sylvester!

Next up - Top Goaltender - Benoit Devereux Trophy!

Top Goaltender Award "Benoit Devereux Trophy"

In the last award, I mentioned that defencemen received the most blame on a team. I might have been wrong. I always hear that parents don’t want their kids to be goalies, because it’s super stressful. That’s why it’s usually the goalies with the steely gaze and even keel attitude are the ones that rise through the ranks. The ability to stay calm under pressure, to not lose control when you let in an easy goal, is invaluable to netminders.

In second place, we have TWO runner ups! Despite falling short of the award, both goaltenders had amazing seasons on their respective squads. Our first runner up hails from Yukon, and although he had an exceptional team in front of him, it’s no easy feat to post 55 wins and 5 shutouts. He is a top prospect for the S79 VHL Entry Draft and is expected to be selected in the top five. Our other runner up spent his season in the cattle ranches of Texas. In spite of the Bulls’ lack of game breakers, this goalie stood on his head, grabbing 38 wins and 2 shutouts along with leaderboard-quality stats. After being picked by the Vancouver Wolves in the first round last season, he’s all set to step right into their backup role next season. Let’s have a round of applause for:

:yuk: + :hou:

Papa Emeritus and Aike van Giersbergen!

@Beketov + @enigmatic

Our S78 Benoit Devereux Trophy winner isn’t the flashy type. After being drafted by the Las Vegas Aces in S76, he has been silently climbing the rankings of VHLM goaltenders. He went undrafted in the VHL, but was offered a contract by the Riga Reign, which he accepted, and he’ll be off to Riga next season barring a move in free agency or a trade, considering Riga’s goalie depth. And if that is the case, there will probably be some buyers. After all, on a team that wasn’t the dominant Rush, he put up 50 wins, a .900 save percentage, and led the league in goals against average. He also had 5 shutouts and even contributed some assists to his San Diego Marlins, who finished second in the Western Conference behind Yukon. Put your hands together for your S78 Benoit Devereux Trophy winner:

:sdm:

Morgan Karlsson!

Top Two-Way Forward Award "Matt Bentz Trophy"

When someone thinks of the responsibilities of a forward, what usually comes to mind is scoring goals and running the team’s offense. But when a forward is responsible in all three zones, he becomes ever more valuable. 200 foot players are a coach’s dream and usually loved by teammates. They are the guys who are present on all special teams and are used in high pressure scenarios. And, all biases aside, who would you rather in the Stanley Cup final, Patrice Bergeron or Auston Matthews?

Our runner up is a second gen who isn’t exactly a spotlight magnet. Nevertheless, his contributions to the Minnesota Storm this season cannot be overlooked. No, he wasn’t a super scorer. But he didn’t need to be. Then again, 93 points isn’t too shabby. But his real value came in his two way game, which was expressed by his presence on leaderboards for hits, powerplay goals, shorthanded goals, and game winning goals. Truly the special teams king, he was a player who the Storm relied upon in all scenarios, and there’s no doubt he’ll be one of the more trusted rookies next season when he debuts with the Los Angeles Stars. Give it up for:

:osl:

Henri le Massif!

@Garsh

Our S78 Matt Bentz Trophy recipient was even more cast into the shadows this season. On the Halifax 21st, where prolific scorers Kikko Moskinen and Baldur Poulsen were the focus of public attention, this player was quietly one of the most valuable players in the VHLM. He still contributed 110 points, which is nothing to sneeze at, but he also led the VHLM in hits with an incredible 328, had a mind-blowing +50 plus/minus, and was just an absolute force to be reckoned with on the ice. Amazingly, he was drafted in the 4th round in S77 by the Malmo Nighthawks, and next season he will join the budding European power. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you:

Next up - Regular Season  MVP - Mitch Higgins Trophy!

Regular Season MVP Award "Mitch Higgins Trophy"

The most valuable player is not necessarily the league’s leading scorer. It is not necessarily the player who scores the most goals, or the goalie with the most wins. It is the player who, if they were to be traded or injured, would leave the biggest hole on his team. The MVP is the player everyone relies on for the important goal, and to pick everyone else up if they’re down by a goal.

Once again, we have two runner ups. The first has already been mentioned, the goaltender for the San Diego Marlins. On a Marlins team that was not quite at the same level as the insanely deep Yukon Rush and Halifax 21st, this player dragged his team back into games and gave the lethal San Diego offense the confidence to take risks knowing that they had him to save their butts. Our second runner up has also already been mentioned. One of the top weapons on the powerhouse 21st, this player seemed unstoppable with the puck on his tape, with almost a goal per game this season. His future in the VHL is uncertain, but he didn’t let that faze him during the season, instead using it as motivation. Let’s have a round of applause for:

:sdm: + :hfx:

Morgan Karlsson and Baldur Poulsen!

@Erik + @GlowyGoat

Our S78 Mitch Higgins Trophy winner has astonishingly not yet won an award tonight despite being the surefire 1st overall selection in the upcoming VHL draft and posting 133 points, good for 3rd in the league behind the two Halifax pillars. He scored 64 goals and 69 (niiiiiiiiiiceeeee) assists, good enough to crack leaderboards in both categories. He had less help than his opponents on Halifax, which meant he had to be the leading offensive driver for the Rush, collecting an out-of-this-world 534 shots on goal, leading the league by a wide margin. He also led the ultra-important game winning goals category with 15, and power play goals with 22. With those stats, how could you not be the first overall pick? I have a feeling you’ll be hearing his name more and more the next couple days, give it up for:

:yuk:

Tyler Reinhart!

@Zetterberg

Up Next - Playoff MVP - Skylar Rift Trophy!

Playoff MVP Award "Skylar Rift Trophy"

The most valuable player in the playoffs is a whole different award than the regular season MVP. You see, some players excel in the regular season, but when the time to execute in the playoffs arrive, they find themselves getting bumped off the puck more often and succumbing to the more physical play. True playoff performers are able to raise their games to the new standards that come with postseason time, and that’s who we’re recognizing with this award.

For the first time tonight, we have three runner ups! First up is a previously mentioned goalie. Any goalie who is able to lead his team to the championship is no beer leaguer, but one who can smash his regular season stats and raise his performance to match the pressure is a special player. Our next runner up also lifted the Founder’s Cup at the end of the postseason, but as the playoff’s leading scorer with 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points. The Mitch Higgins Award winner carried his phenomenal regular season showcase into the playoffs and puffed up his draft resume even more, if that’s even possible. Our third nominee, despite having played 3 less games than his Yukon opponents, not only finished 3rd in playoff scoring but also did it as a defenceman! With 9 goals and 12 assists, this player took it into his own hands to boost the offense of the Minnesota Storm while hustling back into his own end to block 23 shots, also good enough for a leaderboard. Ladies and gentlemen:

:yuk: + :yuk: +:osl:

Papa Emeritus and Tyler Reinhart and Ron World Peace lll!

@Beketov + @Zetterberg+ @stevo

Our S78 Skylar Rift Trophy winner has been mentioned as a finalist, but not yet an official recipient. Well that ends now, but frankly, it ended as soon as he hoisted the Founder’s Cup with the Yukon Rush. He matched World Peace’s stats with 21, but of course receives extra props for leading his team to the ultimate prize. With 15 assists in 17 games, 23 blocked shots, and 4 power play goals, he outscored a lot of his team’s own forwards on the race to the cup. Put your hands together for:

:yuk:

Nathan Powers!

@JB123

Top Executive Award "Jack Reilly Trophy"

With the VHLE expansion nearing ever closer, the VHLM has solidified it’s core role as a purely developmental league. Of course, everyone wants to win, and looking at the winner of this season’s Top GM award, I think there won’t be much of a surprise, but in reality a VHLM GMs success is determined by their ability to cultivate successful VHL members. Tonight's winner is no exception to this, as they were able to bring together VHL vets and newbies alike to form a team with heart, grit, and a determination to win.

But first, our runner up. With 3 votes to their name, this GM caught the eye of the league with their dedication and care for the position. In their first full season as a GM, your runner up is none other than @KaleebtheMighty !

Now the moment you’ve been waiting for, and maybe even expecting, congratulations to this year’s Top Executive of the VHLM, @Juice! (And of course, what would a successful GM be without their trusty, rightsless sidekick, @fromtheinside )

Congratulations! Well deserved, not just for your Founder’s Cup triumph, but for the work you put into maintaining your team’s activity, presence, and a hell of a rivalry with @thadthrasher (still waiting on that karaoke duet 👀 )
