Welcome everyone to the S95 VHL Awards presentation and I’m your host Pifferfish. We got a great show ahead and a lot of great nominees ahead. Even to those who don’t win later, I wanted to personally congratulate all of you on a season well done. I think we’ve all waited long enough, let's get right into it.

Victory Cup
Regular Season Champions

:mos: MOSCOW MENACE :mos:
@Spartan

First up we have the Victory Cup. Awarded to the team with the best record in the regular season this one was about as close as it can get. Heading into the final couple sims it was a three horse race between all EU conference teams with Malmo, Riga, and Moscow battling for the regular season title and that all important playoff seeding. In the end, the Moscow Menace came out on top with 108 points off of a 53-17-2 record. They managed exactly a +100 goal differential for the season. This finish is the 3rd best we have seen in the last 5 seasons. Congrats to Moscow on their 7th Victory Cup!

Continental Cup
VHL Champions

:rig: Riga Reign :rig:
@Lemorse7

Next we look at the actual winner of the coveted Continental Cup. After over 20 seasons of searching for another cup, the Riga Reign finally broke through to get their long awaited 10th Cup in franchise history. Round one Riga dominated their matchup against the Malmo Nighthawks with a sweep of the Swedish club. Next, they took down the Swiss HC Davos in 6 games with two shutouts. This brought on the NA conference’s top regular season team, the Toronto Legion, in the finals. The Reign quickly went up 3-1 in the series but allowed the Legion to battle back and force a game 7. In the end, Riga got the 5-2 win and the opportunity to hoist this massive trophy.

Alexander Beketov Trophy
VHL Assists Leader

:mos: Jarmo Ruutu :mos:
@jRuutu
83 assists

Most goals require either a pass or a rebound left for the skater who finishes the job, but let's not forget those heroes that let their teammates get the glory and enable the best offense in the league to click at peak efficiency. Jarmo Ruutu had the benefit of playing on a team loaded with talent, but he certainly was a massive piece of that puzzle himself. With 83 assists he put on a complete playmaking showcase for the league this year, and earned the title of “VHL Apple Master” after this strong campaign.

Forgot to mention the close case of @AJWRandy Bobandy, only 3 assists from tying in his retirement campaign. Good work by him as well.

Kevin Brooks Trophy
VHL Goals Leader

:mos: David Rashford :mos:
@Knight

56 goals

Now we look at probably one of the primary beneficiaries of that playmaking from Ruutu in David Rashford. This is what biologists call a symbiotic relationship as both these guys were lighting the lamp together all season long. Rashford saw a major breakout this year after only posting a season high of 30 goals up until this point to now being a Brooks Trophy winner.

Other players that got close to this award include Catia Goncalves @cLoWn and Shubham Anand @Will3 with 51 and 54 Ginos respectively. Great seasons all around, but again, congrats to Rashford on this honor.

Mike Szatkowski Trophy
VHL Points Leader

:mos: David Rashford :mos:
@Knight

127 points

This came down to a two horse race between both the players we just mentioned. As I said, they both were mutually beneficial to each other's dominance. In the end, Rashford edged out Ruutu @jRuutu for this coveted honor. Since I’ve already talked about both of them a bit, I’ll forgo some hubbub and keep things moving.

Greg Clegane Trophy
VHL GAA Leader

:mal: Jorgen Lovstrom :mal:
@Pifferfish

2.24 GAA

Maybe a controversial award win here, as Jorgen played only 3 more games than the awards minimum, but nonetheless he is your Clegane winner. As a rookie he managed to lead the league in save percentage and goals against average. That said, a ton of the credit for GAA goes toward the skater in front of the netminder. Some have even argued GAA is a team stat more than a goalie one. A ton of the credit for this win has to go to the defensemen in Malmo. Jorgen also wanted me to give the league a message in response to this win: “Get JORGED on!” I have no idea what getting Jorged on is but I don't think I really want to know.

The next closest player for consideration was Olober Skyo @Spartan in Moscow (what didn’t their team do?) with a 2.39 GAA.

Christian Stolzchweiger Trophy
VHL Top Rookie

Nominees:

:mal: G Jorgen Lovstrom @Pifferfish -

43 GP | 32-9-2 | .930 SV% | 2.24 GAA | 3 SO

:mos: W Maverick Goncalves @leandrofg -
38 G | 42 A | 80 P | +69 | 263 HITS

:dav: G Aleksanteri Kaskiniemi-Kekkonen @Snussu -
64 GP | 37-20-7 | .916 SV% | 2.49 GAA | 3 SO

:dav: D Felicia Hardy @JCarson -
11 G | 54 A | 65 P | -15 | 138 HITS | 139 SB

Lots of great nominees here but inevitably 3 kind of had a “flaw” despite the great seasons they played. AKK got kind of outclassed by JOrgen down the stretch but Jorgen only played 43 games versus AKK’s 64. Hardy did have one of the best rookie seasons by a defenseman in recent history in terms of point production, but posting a team low plus/minus as a defender is a big time red flag. That leaves Maverick. Led rookies in points, tied for the league lead in plus/minus, and a defensive contributor with hitting ability.

Dustin Funk Trophy
VHL Most Improved Player

Nominees:

:dcd: G Herald Benson @Benson -

64 GP | 16-41-6 | .927 SV% | 3.65 GAA | 5 SO

:mos: W David Rashford @Knight -
56 G | 71 A | 127 P | +67

:mal: C Ronald Johnson MacWallace III @RJMW -
35 G | 59 A | 94 P | +51 | 151 HITS

:hel: W Isaac mclflopper @sportexperts show -
43 G | 39 A | 82 P | +8 | 191 HITS

:mos: D Obuz Schneider Canet du Bocage @Grape -

30 G | 74 A | 104 P | +68 | 218 HITS | 150 SB

Wow, this time last season who would have expected all these guys to breakout? Quite the deserving candidates here and lets hope it continues instead of being the Jonathan Cheechoo story! For some individual looks at the nominees, Benson improved not in record but majorly in SV% with a .014 increase from S94. Rashford as we discussed earlier, nearly doubled his previous season high goal total. Isaac bounced back after a -42 season with a great defensive effort and his first point per game season of a young career. RJMW3 has been offensively solid for many seasons, but maybe just had his best defensive effort with a new career high in plus/minus. Lastly, Bocage not only got to the point per game mark for the first time but smashed that ceiling into the stratosphere.

Scott Boulet Trophy
VHL Best Two-Way Forward

Nominees:

:sea: C Severus Targaryen @Banackock -

46 G | 49 A | 95 P | +6 | 299 HITS | 40 SB

:rig: C Axle Gunner @Steve -
44 G | 58 A | 102 P | +21 | 298 HITS | 40 SB

:cal: W Catia Goncalves @cLoWn -

51 G | 53 A | 104 P | +16 | 233 HITS | 34 SB

Forward often get credited for their offensive abilities but defense is important too (coming from a guy with a goalie player). I think comparing the stats of these players can give you a good idea of what went down, so I won't bore with my analysis. Lets see who the best two-way forward in the VHL was in S95.

Alexander Valiq Trophy
VHL Best Offensive Defenseman

Nominees:

:chi: D YaBoi Oven @Doomsday -

23 G | 69 A | 92 P | +45 | 295 S | 3 GWG

:mal: D Jacob Stone @scoop -
35 G | 60 A | 95 P | +44 | 313 S | 9 GWG

:mos: D Obuz Schneider Canet du Bocage @Grape -

30 G | 74 A | 104 P | +68 | 347 S | 8 GWG

A modern hockey league has to feature a few fast skating puck movers on the blue line to keep the games super exciting. Now these players are some of the most exciting offensive forces in the VHL. While Oven was great, this award really comes down to the playmaking of Bocage versus the thundering shot of Stone.

:que: D Guntis Gavilrovs @Girts -
70 P | +28 | 239 HITS | 171 SB

Let’s not abandon that old school hockey where our defenders hit hard and put their bodies on the line to keep puck from even threatening their goaltenders. Lots of strong cases this season as some of the hardest hitting players in the league are lined up for the voters.

Sterling Labatte Trophy
VHL Best Defenseman

Nominees:

35 G | 60 A | 95 P | +44 | 194 HITS | 179 SB

:mos: D Obuz Schneider Canet du Bocage @Grape -

:chi: D YaBoi Oven @Doomsday -

23 G | 69 A | 92 P | +45 | 214 HITS | 137 SB

Now we will smash both of the previous awards together and find the overall best defenseman in the VHL. This award is arguably the most coveted for defensemen as it requires a duality of focus on the ice. You cannot let one part of your game create sacrifices in the other. These three candidates played a strong two way game better than the rest of the field this season and the stats show what appears to be a tight race. Bocage with triple digits in points, Stone leading in shot blocking and goals, and Oven with just good consistency across the board with a weaker supporting cast in Chicago.

Aidan Shaw Trophy
VHL Best Goaltender

Nominees:

:war: G Merome Dilson @MexicanCow123 -

62 GP | 33-25-4 | .926 SV% | 2.53 GAA | 5 SO

:dcd: G Herald Benson @Benson -
64 GP | 16-41-6 | .927 SV% | 3.65 GAA | 5 SO

:que: G Dalkr Vidarsson @KaleebtheMighty -
65 GP | 42-18-4 | .928 SV% | 2.46 GAA | 5 SO

:mal: G Jorgen Lovstrom @Pifferfish -
43 GP | 32-9-2 | .930 SV% | 2.24 GAA | 3 SO

Ahhh the goalies. The anchors of any strong defensive team in the VHL. Each of these guys have strengths and weaknesses for their case this season. The biggest red flag here is Jorgen Lovstrom. He boasts the best point percentage as a starter, the best save percentage, and the best goals against average. However, he didn’t start the normal 60+ contests of the other nominees. Benson did play really well but a weak team hurt the record and GAA. Either way, all of these players have their case and we send it to the voters!
