The Helsinki Titans franchise is widely known as one of the more historic in the entire league, also providing one of the best fan bases in the entire world. Helsinki has been at a low point since blowing up their team only 2 seasons ago. But they are quickly getting back into the big picture, and their rebuild may take a massive leap with the Season 39 Draft looking very strong at the moment. Who will Helsinki be looking at with their 4 1st round draft picks? We will be taking a look at who exactly is on Helsinki's radar and why.
James Faraday - LW
The most obvious of all those on Helsinki's radar is James Faraday. Although Faraday just opted for the draft 2 days ago, having former Helsinki Titans GM Mitch Higgins' as your agent will certainly garner you some interest from the team. Some have even speculated that Faraday decided to opt into the Season 39 Draft as opposed to Season 40 so he had the greatest chance to get taken by the Titans. Faraday is Higgins' first attempt with a forward, and it seems that Faraday is the type of player who can both move his feet and has the ability to put the puck in the net. Faraday has gained many comparisons to Jeff Carter because he is a tall goal scoring forward who has the ability to "turn on the jets" at any point on a rush.
Mikkel Boomgaarden - D
Boomgaarden is considered the best defenseman prospect of this draft, and his agent, Matthew Boragina is also a former Helsinki Titans GM. Boomgaarden woud be the perfect puzzle piece to play with Jake Wylde and Svoboda, with Boomgaarden added in, it could easily form one of the most deadly defensive cores that the league has seen in a long time. But with Helsinki likely having only 1 pick in the top 3 in the draft, they will have to make the decision between a high powered forward or a defenseman who will turn their defensive core into a powerhouse, and hope they can pick up offense in the later rounds of the 1st round.
Devin Sundberg - C
Yet another player in this draft who is represented by a legendary agent, only this time it's Greg Harbinson who is representing this youngster. Sundberg is likely to be picked in the second half of the draft, perfect position for Helsinki to scoop up a player who will be one of the best players of the draft. Greg Harbinson's last 2 centers in Markus Strauss and Felix Peters were both all-stars multiple times over their careers. If Sundberg manages to fall to Helsinki in the late 1st round, they will be laughing all the way to the bank. Similar to Faraday, Sundberg is a player with quick hands, quick feet, and is able to bury the puck quite often. Sundberg will grow to be a valuable part of any offense, Helsinki knows this and knows he may fall. Sundberg is definitely on Helsinki's draft radar and you can bet Ethan Osborne will be crossing his fingers that Sundberg falls to him on draft day.
Andrew Erikson - LW
Quickly making a name for himself in this draft, Erikson has shot up the draft boards relatively quickly and will likely continue to at the current pace he is developing at. However, as of now he is yet another forward who will likely be taken in the second half of the 1st round. Helsinki will be looking to pry out another forward from the 1st round and Erikson could easily fit the mold. Erikson and Sundberg are two players who play very similar, but would likely gain some chemistry together. Erikson's issues have not come from himself personally, but rather his agent. His agent, Equil Librium has a history of strong starts but fading out when entering his prime. Helsinki scouts will be keeping a close eye on Erikson's training habits to make sure he will be worth using a late round 1st on him.
While I'm sure Helsinki has many prospects on their radar for the 1st round, these in my opinion are the players who they are discussing the most in their scouting department. Helsinki will make it a very interesting draft day in Season 39, which we haven't seen in awhile. It will be nice to once again have a draft that is relatively unpredictable.
It's official, Tuomas Tukio will retire from the VHL at the end of S38.
Time flies, but a constant through the past eight seasons in the VHL was Tukio for me. It's been a time playing with some cool cats through those seasons and being GM as a goalie. Tukio won some games, earned way too much TPE (1400), won a Continental Cup with Helsinki and won some other things last season which was awesome! Hopefully the final chapter in Tukios career can be just as fun as the rest. Good bye.
