As we have now reached the conclusion of the S64 World Cup, I'd like to extend congratulations to @Tagger and Team World for coming in clutch and finishing it off right for the first time since S50. I'd also like to thank each of the other World Cup GMs (@Eudaldkp, @Nykonax, @Hybrid1486, @Jubo07, and @oilmandan) for their support in getting everything going and involvement over the course of the tournament. Similar to the WJC, I'd like to acknowledge some of the exceptional play we saw this week and polled the GMs for their opinions.

It's a shame this thread isn't locked down to GM's only, this is an unfortunately bad look from those looking from the outside in. Let's all calm down and worry about our own teams and our own agendas. Big season coming up with two new expansions. It's going to be a more competitive atmosphere with the talent more spread throughout.

Josh reacted to bluesfan55 in Looking At Yukon’s S66 Draft (First 4 Rounds) [1/2]
    A Look at Yukon’s Draft (Rounds 1-4)

    Pick #1: Hunter Hearst Helmsley

The consensus #1 pick of the draft, Hunter Hearst Helmsley is a beast. The American center leads his class with 205 TPE. Helmsley is a lethal scores (80 scoring) with great skating and defense (both at 70), not to mention that he is a very talented puck handler (75). However, Helmsley doesn’t use his big frame (6’3”, 250 pounds) well, with 40s for both strength and checking. HHH should be Yukon’s star man this season as the team looks to bounce back from their last place finish.

    Pick #8: Anthony Matthews

The only S65 player that Yukon picked in this draft was Canadian center Anthony Matthews. He’s currently second on the team in TPE with 191. Matthews isn’t a scorer like Helmsley. He’s more of a well-rounded player. Matthews has 70s in skating, strength, puck handling, faceoffs, defense, and passing, meaning that he can do it all. However, like HHH, Matthews isn’t a very good checker, which might limit his ability around the boards.

    Pick #11: Valeri Morozov

The first of Yukon’s 3 third round picks was Russian left winger Valeri Morozov, currently weighing in at 120 TPE. Morozov is a 6’6” beast, but isn’t very strong (40 strength). However, he makes up for that with his scoring touch (70), pure skating (70), and lockdown defense (70). Morozov is also a decent checker (60). He looks to be a first-line winger for Yukon this season.

    Pick #14: Richard Hejtsel

Watch this space. Latvian defenseman Richard Hejtsel could be a big coup for the Rush. Hejtsel with 113 TPE, is a prototypical 2 way defenseman, judging by his 75 defense and 70 passing. Hejtsel is also a decent scorer (55), checker (50), and skater (50), but struggles with puck handling (43) and strength (45).

    Pick #15: Titus Stone

The second defenseman (and last third round pick) that Yukon picked in the draft was American Titus Stone, who currently has 90 TPE. Stone is more of a defensive defenseman that Hejtsel. Even though both of them have 75 defense, Stone only has 60 passing. Stone is also a better checker (60 compared to Hejtsel’s 50). However, Stone lacks the scoring that Hejtsel has. As such, he’s more of a project.

    Pick #19: Arnor Sigurdsson

Yukon only had one fourth round pick, and they utilized it well, selecting Icelandic right winger Arnor Sigurdsson, who has 116 TPE (good for 4th on the team). Sigurdsson is the epitome of a modern-day power forward. The 6’4” Icelander has 60 strength and 60 checking, meaning he likes to throw his weight around. Sigurdsson also has 70 scoring, so he knows how to put the puck in the net. He’s been working on his skating and passing, and has solid leadership (all three attributes are at 50), but has bad discipline (45), defense (45), and passing (40).

In closing, Yukon had a great first 4 rounds of the draft. All 6 picks are over 85 TPE, with 5 over 100 at the moment. This draft could turn Yukon into a contender, if not the favorite, for the title next season. All eyes will be on these 6 players to see how they produce throughout the season.

The resim has occurred. For now I've only re-simmed the first day of the tournament ergo 3 game days. I'm going to be starting the Medal round tomorrow so this is your heads up due to the scheduling issues/sim issues that you should be submitting to me your lines for the rest of the Round Robin. I'll give an updated index for submissions for the single elimination medal round games when we get there. The email is in the original post here as is the index with the new schedule for who you face for the rest of the Round Robin. I sincerely appreciate everyone's patience during this and can promise that we'll run into less issues next time.

The rest of the round robin will be simmed later tonight, I'm going to give it some time to try to let GM's get lines in and back up's played if need be. Thanks again.

Josh reacted to Eudaldkp in VSN - The VHLM after the expansion and the dispersal
Good morning my dear VSN subscribers! The off-season can be boring with no hockey games and I thought that I would give our beloved readers something to distract themselves before the World Championship. Today we are going to be analyzing what each team looks like after the dispersal draft

     Minnesota Storm

We are going to be starting with the Storm, whom have recently moved to Minnesota and are looking to be one of the strongest teams in the league as of now.
They drafted three times in the 1st round and added Slade, Wolfe and Mars, all of which are fantastic players and are going to cap. They also managed to somehow steal Matteo in the 4th round. If you add to that Kai and Hitz returning you get a team that is almost set to win.
They still have their weak links, as they need to find an active goalie, an active center as well as add some depth to their 3rd and 4th lines.

     Houston Bulls

Next we have the Bulls, one of the expansion teams, and the one that had the better draft. The Bulls are gunning hard for this season and Sonnet’s moves showed it.
They managed to acquire in Kozlov in the expansion, who is likely going to be their star Center and Jurri, an elite winger. With Gibbles anchoring the defense they have gotten themselves a really solid team. They also acquired Owen may to goaltend for them, who is looking very promising.
However, the team will need more than that to compete, they will need a stronger 2nd line as well as better Defenseman if they want to compete against the top of the top.

     Philadelphia Reapers

They are the other new team in the Minors and they didn’t have a bad draft, but their GM Blade showed that they do not intend to contend this season and they stocked on picks for the next one rather than going hard for season 65.
Their biggest additions are Elasmobranch Fish, a star Defenseman, and Mikko Aaltonen, a soon to be elite winger. They also added Cain to goaltend for them who similarly to Owen is looking also very promising.
The problem is that asides from those players, they didn’t manage to acquire any more notable skaters and their team is looking like one of the weakest right now, but as we said, they shouldn’t be contending this season and rather focusing on season 66.

     Las Vegas Aces

The defending champs are back this year and they are looking hungry for more. While they didn’t have an astonishing draft, basically because they barely had any high picks, they managed to bring back players like LaGarza, Harris and Matthews, all of them elite at their position.  On top of that, they managed to add some rookies in the late rounds that could be a lot of help to them, as they are looking to repeat.
What do they have to fix now? Getting everyone to stay active and keep growing, really. They have the players and they should have the depth should everyone or almost everyone on that roster keep updating, that won’t be an easy task but they could pull it off, and if they do they will be really scary.

     Ottawa Lynx
A gutted team from what they were last year. They went hard for the championship and used lots of assets to compete, but in the end they couldn’t pull it off and they are going to be paying the price this season. Asides from Lynch returning, they don’t really have any notable players and unless they make some really good pick ups in Free Agency, they are going to be a bottom feeder.
So except for the RW, where Lynch plays, they have to fix everything!

    Halifax 21st
(poor dudes their logo is so ugly it isn't implemented on the forum)
They came in second last year and this season they want more than that. The Halifax are returning with a very strong roster and some faces that we will recognize, such as Vanderhuge, Volosenkov, Glover and Edvin as well as Moose.
In the goal they have Chase, who is going to be their full-time starter this season and will likely be competing with Cole for the Goalie of the Year award.
If I could change something about their roster, it would be their Center depth, as Josh Wilson isn’t going to cut it if they really want to compete. They should also reinforce their defense.

     Saskatoon Wild
The S63 champions haven’t recovered yet from their championship parade, they have the worst roster in the league on paper. But you have to take into account the type of picks that they made, because if you pay attention you will see that they have picked players who will be likely returning next season, a season for which they have a lot of good picks and is looking like they are going to be the favorites for it.

     Yukon Rush

Last, but not the worst team by a long shot, we have the Rush. Arguably the team with the best draft picks, but they did not have any notable returning players. However, they have put together a really strong roster with Triple H leading the team, alongside Mozorv, Sigurdsson and Justin Cole, one of the best goalies in the Minors.
They still have things to fix, as their defensive pairings are looking weak and they also have some problems in the wing position.

    CONCLUSION – TL;DR

You can check this really simple graphic to summarize the article. At the top we are going to have the Storm, the Aces, the 21st and the Rush, with Houston making a really serious case for it too. The bottom feeders are going to be the Lynx, the Wild and the Reapers.
We have a very fun season ahead of ourselves with the new teams and a grand total of 4 or 5 teams competing for the Founder’s Cup.
  18. Thanks

Josh reacted to oilmandan in Mercenaries looking to prove the doubters wrong [1/2]
The S64 World Cup is upon us and as the 6 teams gather in Moscow to start play, one team has gotten next to no love in the predictions. The Mercenary team is selected with players that didn't make the other squads in the tournament. As is the case most years, this edition features player from Canada mostly.

The actual Team Canada is one of the favourites to bring home the gold, but even though the players on the Mercenary squad are all solid VHLers in there own right, no one seems to believe in them outside the locker room.

In goal Shawn Brodeur and Brick Wahl rank 3rd and 8th respectively in earned tpe from all netminders in this tournament. Wahl could have even started on other rosters.

They have experience together, sharing the goal in Calgary last season. They have great chemistry and will push each other in practice for the starting role.

On defense they are lead by Samuel Gate and LPLL. While rookie of the year candidate Ryan Sullivan Jr teams up with Lando Baxter on the second pair. The two pairs seem almost made for each other, as their skill sets should compliment each other very well.

Gate and Baxter are both more than able to bring solid offense to the game and push the play quickly out of their own end. Sullivan Jr provides a solid all round game, he was the only New York American to have a positive plus minus. LPLL is the prototypical shut down defender and will be tasked most nights with smothering the oppositions stars.

Up front the Mercenaries will be lead by a great group of forwards, looking forward to proving their own countries made major mistakes in not bringing them along. Most of the players up front are shoot first types and should keep goalies busy.

Wingers Jake Davis and Dan Wilinsky have both put up back to back 30 goal seasons in the VHL and will likely both be on the top line. In between them will probably be rookie star Kronos Bailey, who may have some of the fastest faceoff hands in the entire tournament. All three love to shoot, so it will be interesting to see if they stay together.

The second unit is full of solid players as well. It's a more rounded out line with shooter Rylan Peace in between all round wrecking ball Randoms and set up man Adam Warlock. All three have the skill to switch out to the top line in a heartbeat without missing a beat.

The special team units remain to be seen, but it was rumoured every player can expect plenty of opportunity to make their mark. In the mini camp that just wrapped up, chemistry between the players was clearly apparent and everyone seems ready to go.

While the experts are mostly just spitballing on their rankings, the Mercenaries are using it as fuel to drive them during every practice and wont be satisfied until they are stepping over the strewn bodies to take their place on the podium at the end of the tournament.
