If this is the direction we are heading, is there a way to do both?

1.) Player creation is done in the portal.

2a.) Player creation page created on forum, as it is currently
3a.) VHLM GMs can post a more personalized pitch or whatever

2b.) After player creation, player is redirected to "Teams page" or whatever we're calling it, which also provides some sort of link to the forum and the player creation page.
3b.) New member has the ability to join a team based on the blurb

My primary concern is removing the human element from recruiting, especially for new and returning members. Re-creates are probably fine with doing it purely from the portal, but we've heard time and time again it's the relationships that keep people in the league. Having someone just click on a button to join a team completely eliminates that.

    Hello, VHL...

With the conclusion of the regular season upon us, I think now is the right time to talk about the conclusion of something different. That being...

...that this will be my last season as Davos' GM.

I was (controversially) originally brought on in January of 2020, meaning that at the end of the playoffs, I will have served the league (somewhat) faithfully for just about exactly 2 years. This will also be my first time not being a GM of some sort since April of 2019, when I became the first GM of the Mississauga Hounds. I know that this will come as a surprise to some of you, but I have given this a great deal of thought on my own time and think it's the best decision to make for myself and for the league. Bear with me, because I'm going to try to address whatever I can about it in this post.

    FAQ:

    Why?
This is an interesting question, and it has a few answers.
Davos will be hit hard with retirement, and I don't have the heart to deal with it. We've had some not-fun times with me here, including S70-71 when we set the record for most consecutive seasons in last place (which wasn't really my fault) and S74-79 (I think?) when we underperformed and rebuilt (which kinda was my fault). While we're a playoff team now, I don't have the same enthusiasm for turning things around that I did then. It might be possible to make it work, but I've asked myself whether I see myself working to do that and I really don't. Hopefully we get someone who will! I haven't lived up to the hype. This by itself isn't a reason to step down--the reason is mostly represented in the first point--but I was meant to be the savior of the franchise and things didn't work out that way. I will always think it's more important that everyone had fun, but with one failed attempt to compete gone and another probably gone unless some playoff magic comes out of nowhere, I also think it's unfair to the league that a consistently underperforming team has the same GM for eternity. The league and I are moving in different philosophical directions. This actually isn't about the VHLE. Everyone's also aware of the whole meta thing, and it's more about that. I'm not here to criticize anyone for going along with it, but it's another "do I see myself doing this" situation where the answer is no. I am NOT saying that I want any replacement to try to make Davos a meta team--in fact, I very much do not want that--but I find the idea of running a team less fun when "this is what I want to do" is very different from "this is what I should be doing if I want to win a championship". Like the second point, this is a very minor issue for me in relation to the first, so please don't make me "that guy who left over the meta" or anything. Just something I find worth mentioning. I don't like that I'm saying any of the above, but I've had this on my mind for weeks and I think it's the most fair explanation of my thoughts.

    Are you going inactive?
No. In fact, I hope I stay as active as always in the future.

Do you want to GM again?
I hope I do at some point, and at that point I hope I'm hired! Right now, I just need a break.

    Are you leaving the BoG?
No, you can't get rid of me that easily. I like arguing too much.

A few (alright, quite a few) shoutouts to people who have made my time as GM fun:

@Berocka: I cannot possibly make a list without putting you on top. I don't like to speak in absolutes, but you are my best friend in this league. Thank you for putting up with all of my bullshit, and thank you for always being there to talk. It's been great working with you almost from Day 1 and I hope we'll do some other cool stuff in the future.

@Ahma: It's no secret that you LOVE Davos, and I'm amazed by your ability to stand by this team through thick and thin. Thank you for your loyalty, and also for reminding me to care when I start to lose it.

@WranglersSuck, @Banackock, @Darth Kaprizov, @Tyler, @KC15, and @JardyB10: to the rest of the active members of the current roster, hi! I know this comes on short notice, but thank you so much for getting Davos where it is today and making it a wonderful place to be. Best of luck!

@Brrbisbrr, @McWolf , @Laine, @FrostBeard, @Grape, @Snussu, @samx, and probably a whole lot of others I'm missing: you were the people who made the past 12 (yes, 12!) seasons fun as players. I hope you're doing well, whatever you're up to.

@Doomsday, @Renomitsu, @Esso2264 , @DoktorFunk, @diamond_ace , and especially @GlowyGoat (if you ever see this): you never played for me, but you still showed up to our server because you wanted to. I appreciate this endlessly and consider you my friends.

To the @VHL GM crew: some of you have given me advice, some of you have given me some respectful negotiations, some of you I've never really interacted with on a GM level. But none of you have ever made me feel unwelcome, even when I wasn't making the smartest moves, and I think that's great.

@Commissioner: I haven't talked to you about this, so I'd like to apologize again for the zero-notice thing. But here's the announcement. Thanks for keeping things running for all of us! If you'd like to talk to me about the next GM, feel free to do so; if you'd rather make the decision on your own, I respect that as well.

To anyone else I missed, and to many others I'd like to tag here but won't because the reasons don't really connect to my time as a GM: thank you for being you.

This isn't an easy post to make, but I've been hesitating to make it for a while now and it's time to push the button.

    But before I do...

Some of us who were here some months ago might remember a few threads I put up that were deep and meaningful to some and probably cringy to others. While I'll do my best to be emotionally honest in this article, I promise this is not me complaining about my life or feeling sad about myself again. Rather, it's just me talking about what I'm up to!

I had my last exam Thursday, which means I'm done for the semester! I also think it was the last final I'll ever have to take as an undergrad. I'm pretty sure I did OK, though the night before kind of threw a monkey wrench into things--I got ZERO sleep, not because I wouldn't but because I couldn't for some reason. I wasn't nervous; it just didn't happen. Thankfully, I'm fine, and though I haven't seen for sure yet, I did fine! Speaking of the end of the semester, I'm actually a little bit sad that it's over. This was the first back-to-normal (with masks) semester I've ever had that involved more than one class in my major. I did some cool things, learned a lot, and for the first time ever, made a few real-life friends in college. Break is going to be a bit lonely, but I suppose that's for all the best reasons. And speaking of the end of school, I'll have my degree in the spring! It's a little scary, because I don't know what my life will look like in a year... ...though I do know I'll be in a grad program! I got into one school you may have heard of, and I'm waiting to hear back from the rest. I don't expect other decisions until January, though the fact that one got back to me so quickly (2 business days after I applied, for someone with zero research experience, no less) is a bit encouraging--I'd heard that applications are going to be fewer and credentials are going to be lower in general this year, especially for domestic applicants, so this could go really well! Even if it doesn't, I've got a guaranteed spot somewhere. I'm working more at my usual terrible job, and hating it as always. I said (informally) that I should be paid a bit more, as I've been there over 4 years and practically led the department for short periods of time during that, and was told that minimum wage is going up in a couple weeks. That's cool, and at least New York has a decent minimum, but I still get paid less than high school kids at McDonald's. I've been a bit quieter on Discord lately, and I think that's okay. I don't miss the days when I'd spend 4 hours at a time in genchat. I know I've said this before, but it's a bit more so most recently and it's worth reiterating.

Fire Tortorella reacted to Gustav in Roster Sizes Between the VHL, E, and M.
I find it funny that this comes as a surprise. BACK IN MY DAY when the cutoff was 200 nobody broke it (except maybe HHH) and we had more chances to earn. I've always raised an eyebrow at people saying "oh, now with the cutoff at 200, good earners can easily skip the M"--I feel like I've raised the point before, too. If I have, shame on you guys; if I haven't, shame on me. That's just about NEVER been how things work and if the intent was to allow people to skip the M (not that I'm necessarily in favor of that, nor do I think it's a big deal, but I won't go off on that right now) it's not going to work well as is.

That said, I'd be against lowering the cutoff to 150 because I think that's far too damaging to the M. I'd rather keep the M robust than satisfy a very small handful of whiny recreates every season. But that's just me.

I thought this got shot down. If we really want to go for skipping the E, the cutoff should be 250--but I think I'm in the minority on that one.

The skip-the-M cutoff is more tricky (at least to me) because it's kind of nonsensical to have it where it is now, but lowering it probably involves contracting the M/expanding the E again, which I would personally hate is another discussion entirely.

One of my things is just...why do we care? There are people who REALLY want to skip the M, there are also people who REALLY want to skip the E. We hear quite a bit from both. I suspect there's a larger group that just wants to make it up to the big league eventually, and who we never hear from on that because there isn't really a way to be super vocal about it. I really don't think working to achieve either would be making a majority of the league happy.

    WUMBO TRADED TO HALIFAX 21ST
HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA - The life of a goaltender in the VHL and it's various development leagues can be unpredictable. Unlike forwards and defensemen, there are extremely limited spots around the league for these players to play, especially at a starting position. Young goaltender Wumbo is finding that out for himself. Originally picked up on waivers during Season 80 by the Saskatoon Wild, Wumbo was the newbie of the goaltending duo and primarily dressed as the back-up, although he did get some spot starts. He was then drafted by the Ottawa Lynx, but again as a back-up. The Lynx had a returning goalie who had a few more practice hours than the VHLM rookie. As a result, Wumbo was the back-up again, but this was more of a 1B situation than a true number 2.

"Once I was drafted by Ottawa, management told me that I would be splitting time with the returning starter, and might see somewhere around 40% of the starts, at least as of the beginning of the season and how everyone was doing from a practice standpoint. I was perfectly OK with that and thought it made sense and was fair - we were a top team, so the top players were going to play."

Things were working out for the Lynx - I don't have the stats right in front of me, but the the Lynx were top in the league at the beginning of the season. However, Ottawa management decided they wanted to strengthen the rest of the roster. To do so, they would have to trade away an asset, and what better asset than a back up goalie who won't be on the team the following season?

Wumbo was traded to the Halifax 21st - a struggling team who wanted to try to work their way to contention. He was brought in to try to help settle the goaltending situation, and as a result, help the team win more games.

"While the trade completely came out of left field, I can't say I was disappointed to go somewhere that would allow me to be the unquestioned starter. Obviously we all want to win, but we all want to play too. In terms of my development, I think it's more important for me to play than necessarily to win. With that in mind, moving to Halifax might be a good thing for my career."

While the 21st had intentions of attempting to make the playoffs, quite frankly, things haven't worked out. After the losses continued to pile up, management made the decision to sell off what skaters remained in order to build for future seasons. This left Wumbo in limbo - while the young goalie has played OK (6-10-2 record, .878 sv %, and a 3.9 GAA), he's not exactly a top goaltender, and most teams already have a starting goalie for this season. It doesn't make sense for these teams to trade for a backup goalie that won't play during the playoffs either. So where does this leave Wumbo...the answer is in Halifax, and he's OK with that.

"I understand where we are as a team and the direction management is moving. For the rest of the season, we're just going to try to win as many games as possible and I'm going to continue to improve as much as I can."

Yeah, things aren't looking too hot in Halifax. We basically threw in the towel with the trades we did over the past week or two. Oh well - at least I still get to start, and I'm happy with that. Lots of talk about the VHLE recently. I don't have any actual comments on it since I haven't gone through the league yet (get to do that next season as a goalie!), but I find it extremely ironic that many of the comments being made are the EXACT same comments that were made about the VHLM circa S30's-50's. While there were individual changes to the league itself, the biggest thing was the change in attitude by members, specifically new or newer members, who wanted the league to succeed. Just a thought - the VHLM has not always been as successful as it is in "current" VHL. I'm not one to usually complain about things like this...but man do I dislike reviewing a lot more than I thought I would, especially since I used to be Head Grader back in the day. I think it's the fact that since the reviews don't really count, no one wants to say anything bad about anyone's work, so it can make it hard to review the mediocre-ish media spots. And I don't do graphics, so can't do a player card or fan 590 version of graphics either.

2.) Jackbox Night could be fun - allows audience participation so even if you're not playing, you can still participate.
3.) I'm actually almost done! I'd say 90% - just need to get one or two small things for the wife.
4.) I think someone is doing a cooking stream or something? That might be one of the "if we get X amount of donations" ones, but either way, that's what I'd like to see.
5.) Shout out to @WentzKneeFan036 - need you to re-create. Also shout out to our boy @Squinty - time for you to come back!
6.) I have two - one is for cooking reasons and the other is for personal injury reasons. For the cooking one, I had first started cooking and was making Rice-A-Roni. "Brown the rice" accidently turned into "blacken the rice" and it was pretty distrusting - just very crunch and basically inedible. For the personal injury story, I was browning ground beef for something and couldn't figure out why the beef wasn't actually cooking even though the range was on. My mom has an electric stove top, but one of the older ones with the coils, not the flat surface. I had accidentally left the cover over the coils, so the pan itself wasn't getting hot. This must have happened for at least a couple of minutes, if not a little longer. I realized what happened , but I was distracted with something on my laptop (possibly VHL?) and without thinking, I used my index, middle, and ring fingers to slide the cover off the burner like I had countless times before...except all those times, the burner wasn't on high heating up cover. I left skin marks on the cover from where I slid my fingers and immediately filled the bathroom sink with cold water and stuck my fingers in there. Eventually, I ended up at Urgent Care with 3 very burned fingers that started to swell up. Did not tickle.
