Welcome to the second edition of VSN’s Weekly recap.  We’ll cover a host of things in this recap each week including highlights of important VSN happenings, three stars of the week, power rankings, and anything else of importance.

    -----------------------------------

    Weekly Recap

The first full week of Season 68 has come and gone. This past week brought with its usual excitement on the ice, some interesting happenings off of it as well. Between surprising teams, a potential tampering case, a pair of trades, and a league job opening there is plenty to talk about.

Out of nowhere, with his team-leading the league, Michael Gary Scott publicly demands a trade! Pulling a self-described page out of Antonio Brown’s book, MGS declares to the league he cares more about himself than his teammates. Making matters worse, he singled out Seattle as his only destination of choice. Will GM Beavis comply and come to terms with Seattle? In a recent poll, Seattle and HC Davos were listed as his most likely destinations although most still believe he won’t be moved at all.

The week started with a minor trade between DC and Riga but the more intriguing news came Helsinki when the Titans announced they were sending talented forward ACL Tear to Vancouver in exchange for Ben Hafkey and a pair of picks.  A common thought is that Helsinki came out on top of this deal getting an improving Hafkey and two picks for a player who’s development has stalled considerably.

Amid all the surprises this season, what in the heck has happened in New York? No one expected the Americans to be world beaters but with that much talent especially on the back end, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who thought they’d push HC Davos for the bottom of the standings.

In our last bit of news, word around the league is that there is a GM opening in Las Vegas of the VHLM after previous GM Matt-O suddenly stepped down from his position.

    Seeing Stars

Hunter Hearst Helmsley has himself a week. With 16 goals and 27 points, HHH is finally fulfilling his untapped potential.

Randoms is our primary set up man this week dishing out a league-high 20 assists. Adding to that he potted 7 goals of his own earning him a second star

Steady Elias Dahlberg had himself an all-around stellar week registering 13 goals and 13 assists as a rare bright spot on a struggling Riga team.

    Trade Details

    Analysis

Another early-season trade sees one popular and polarizing forward traded to Vancouver in exchange for a depth forward and a pair of draft picks. Helsinki is letting go of S66 12th overall pick, ACL Tear after his development stagnated early in his third season in the league.  Vancouver adds a missing piece to their second line and Helsinki adds two draft picks in the upcoming S70 draft along with depth forward in Hafkey.

    ---------------------

    Get-to-Know the Players

    ACL Tear

Drafted in S66 with the 12th overall selection, ACL tear offered as close to can’t miss potential as possible. After struggling in his first season with New York, ACL broke out as a sophomore in S67 scoring 26 goals and 50 points. Still with certain potential left untapped, ACL had a rough offseason and experts are now predicting he may have hit is ceiling much earlier in his career than first thought.  Regardless of development, ACL should offer good depth on the second line wing adding a missing piece to Vancouver’s roster for an affordable cost of two draft picks and little-used depth forward Ben Hafkey.

    Ben Hafkey

As the “other” piece in this trade, Ben Hafkey is nothing more than a fringe player currently in the VHL. That’s not to say he is an insignificant piece however as his ceiling is certainly what ACL currently is if not higher should he continue to develop. Hafkey should receive plenty of opportunity in Helsinki playing on a second line and should be counted on for solid production from there. Helsinki isn’t going for it this season as they lack the depth to go far and these two draft picks should offer some help in restocking the cupboard with talent. Whether they trade more and strip it down for a full rebuild or this is more of a quick retool is yet to be seen. Either way a solid, if unspectacular return for a once-promising young player who’s career has plateaued before their eyes.

Welcome to the first edition of VSN’s Friday to Friday recap.  We’ll cover a host of things in this recap each week including highlights of important VSN happenings, three stars of the week, power rankings, and anything else of importance.

    -----------------------------------
    Weekly Recap

With Season 69 officially underway, and just two days of games underway we are filled with small sample sizes.  Prague and Vancouver starting 3-1 likely won’t hold up as neither will Riga and HC Davos starting 1-3 and 1-2, respectively.  Six players are on pace for 144 points! Seattle and Toronto still haven’t let in a power-play goal while Helsinki still hasn’t scored one!
Expect things to return to their normal levels after this week but it is good to have hockey back after an off-season of change and improvements. A number of top stars are settling in and creating chemistry with their new linemates after players like Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen, Gritty, Mcwolf, Wilinsky, amongst others, changed jerseys this offseason as they chase success late in their careers.
Once again the European Conference is expected to be much more competitive although parity in the VHL is at an all-time high with almost half the teams having real chances at glory and no team clearly out front of the pack.  Will Seattle be able to repeat as champions or will Malmo get its revenge? Does another contender emerge such as Moscow or Riga?
What will happen in HC Davos as they appear to have turned into a sure dumpster fire entering yet another rebuild? Do they surpass the two latest expansion teams in the race to the bottom?

    -----------------------------------

    Seeing Stars

First star Kronos Bailey finishes the first week of the season scoring a goal in each of his four games as he starts the year on fire.

Julian Borwinn plays set-up man this week with seven assists finishing three of the four games with multiple assist efforts.

Don Draper lead the surprising Prague Phantoms with eight points backed by a huge four-point night against HC Davos in game two.

Here we are, almost finished another week and I’m two TPE short of max earning once again. I’ve written a ton this week again for VSN and yet being short 2 TPE I guess I’ll write one more piece yet. Fittingly, since it’s been my new VHL life working, living, and breathing VSN, I thought I’d share some of my thoughts on the early parts of its revival.

The VSN, thanks to some hardwork by Bana and Frost has really come together quickly. We have a crew that’s so involved, and willing to help each other and this is what has been most important and impressive so far in my opinion.

From the crew of talented writers to our graphics machine, Motza to our leaders, this team has become so much fun to be a part of. The future of the VSN in the VHL is once again real.

What else makes it so much improved? It’s organized. We have a schedule for releases, we have templates to follow for consistency, we have an editor who’s unbelievable at being punctual in getting to reviewing our articles.

All in all, the VSN is back alive and doing well. Such an incredible team there right now and I think the quality and consistency is only beginning. I can’t wait to see how far we can develop.

Thats all for me now. We’ll see you more in the VSN channel with some excellent content and great responses from you - the community.

    VHL Award Tracker
Preview of the S69 VHL Award Races

As teams have all played 14 games and we're just finishing the first fifth of the season, the races for year-end awards are starting to take shape. In this article, the first of possibly three in this series, we are going to go over most awards, review the current leaders and predict the eventual winners. Whenever you try to predict something like that so early, you are bound to make mistakes, but that's about half the fun with these type of articles, isn't it?

    Mike Szatkowski Trophy

Mikko Aaltonen is building up on his breakout in Season 68, as he's currently the league's scoring leader with 23 points, 4 more than his closest rivals for the award at the moment, Randoms and Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen (19 points). Aaltonen benefits from playing on a weak D.C. Dragons roster with two playmaking rookie centres in George Washington and Benny Graves, all of which gives him the opportunities he'll need all season long to keep his lead over his opponents. Other players that could realistically fight for the Szatkowski come season end include Julian Borwinn (18 points), Hunter Hearst Helmsley (18 points) and Elias Dahlberg (18 points), though, at this point in time, it's anyone's game.

    Kevin Brooks Trophy

Just like it was the case with the Szatkowski, D.C. Dragons forward Mikko Aaltonen is leading the way for the Brooks, as he is almost at a goal per game pace, scoring 13 in 14. Would the season end today, the runner-up would be Michael Gary Scott, who already exceeded his career-high in goals with 10. His Wolves teammate Hunter Hearst Helmsley (9 goals), Jet Jaguar (8 goals), Tyler Barabash Jr (8 goals), Elias Dahlberg (8 goals) and Julian Borwinn (6 goals) are all expected to chip in too and give Aaltonen a run for his money.

    Alexander Beketov Trophy

As we enter the second fifth of the season, the three players with the most assists in the whole league are defensemen. Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen, Luciano Valentino and Guillaume Fontenette are outpacing all players with respectively 14, 13 and 13 assists. It's hard to believe they'll keep the pace of almost an assist per game and finish as the top 3, but one of them could very well do it and put their name on the Beketov Trophy. However, if a forward was to pass the three of them, I'd say Randoms (13 assists), Joel Ylonen (11 assists), Ryan Kastelic (11 assists) and Kronos Bailey (8 assists) are the most likely to achieve it and take home the award.

    Alexander Valiq Trophy

The Valiq Trophy is absolutely Season 68 winner Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen's to lose. The newly acquired Moscow Menace blueliner is pacing all defensemen with 5 goals and 19 points. After a breakout season after which he was named the Valiq and Labatte trophies winner, Smitty looks like he's not going to slow down anytime soon. His closest competitor at this point of the season is Luciano Valentino (17 points), a sophomore defenseman looking like he just broke out into a star quarterback role for the Dragons. Other notable offensive defensemen who could claim the award themselves are Diljodh Starload (14 points), Apollo Hackett (13 points) and Charlie Paddywagon (13 points).

    Jake Wylde Trophy

The Wylde Trophy is a hard one to predict because of how situational shot-blocking is. Defensemen on struggling teams will have the opportunity to get more, but as the season goes on, teams will go on hot and cold streaks, modifying their blueliners shot-blocking potential. That being said, if the season was to end today, rookie Cinnamon Block (42 H, 30 SB), Joseph McWolf (50 H, 27 SB) and Rusty Shackleford (38 H, 26 SB), the only three players to appear in both positional top 10 for shots blocked and hits, could find their name be on the ballots along with those of heavy-hitter Leph Twinger (61 H, 21 SB) and current shots blocked leader Jerry Garcia (26 H, 36 SB).

    Sterling Labatte Trophy

Just like with the Valiq Trophy before, the defending Labatte Trophy winner might be the early favourite to repeat. Unsurprisingly, it's the same man in both cases: Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen of the Moscow Menace. He's the points leader among blueliners with 19, while still demonstrating his strong defensive presence with 46 hits and 22 shots blocked. Season 68 Jake Wylde runner-ups Apollo Hackett (13 PTS, 36 H, 27 SB) and Jerry Garcia (12 PTS, 26 H, 35 SB) are probably the two closest competitors for the award, though it doesn't appear to be particularly close as we're closing on the first fifth of the season.

    Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy

As a pair of D.C. Dragons centres, George Washington and Benny Graves, lead this rookie class in points with 10 and 9, it's actually a defenseman from the other most recent expansion team, the Prague Phantoms, that looks like the early favourite for the Stolzschweiger Trophy. Cinnamon Block's defensive stats (42 H, 30 SB) appear to put him on the shortlist of favourites for the Wylde, but he also added 8 points in 14 games, easily making him the most valuable rookie at this point in the season. He'll have to continue his strong two-way play if he wants to keep up with the Dragons centres, as well as with Jerry Wang (9 points), Ryo Yamazuki III (7 points) and Soren Jensen (5 points).

    Dustin Funk Trophy

This year's race for the Funk Trophy is a close one. It features two forwards with similar stat lines, both this season and last season. On one side, you got Michael Gary Scott; he scored 10 goals and 18 points so far, which puts him on a pace for 51 goals and 93 points, a major increase from his 7 goals and 37 points last season. On the other side, you got Aston Martin; he already got 9 goals and 17 points, a pace that would have him finish the season with 46 goals and 87 points, a great step up from his 13 goals and 34 points from last season. Guillaume Fontenette could also make a run for it, as he's keeping a point per game pace and could finish the season with over 150 shots blocked when he could only score 25 points and block 108 shots last season. Finally, goaltenders Greg Eagles (.928 SV%, 2.45 GAA up from .902 SV%, 2.84 GAA) and Pekka Poutta (.922 SV%, 2.10 GAA up from .906 SV%, 3.33 GAA) also appear to be having breakout seasons of their own.

    Scott Boulet Trophy

If the season was to finish today, Helsinki Titans winger Julian Borwinn would undoubtedly win his second straight Scott Boulet Trophy. In a tight-knit group of four forwards all within a point of each other, Borwinn distances himself as he's the only one with more than 60 hits. He sits at 18 points and 62 hits. The three other forwards in the group are Hunter Hearst Helmsley (18 PTS, 56 H), Randoms (19 PTS, 54 H) and Elias Dahlberg (18 PTS, 53 H). They are all great power forwards and are all expected to keep it up until the very end.

    Greg Clegane Trophy

14 games in, Riga Reign netminder Kallis Kriketers leads all VHL goalies with an average of 1.53 goals against per game. The sample size is fairly small and that number might not be sustainable over the course of a full season, but the team in front of Kriketers is strong, so it wouldn't be too surprising to see his name on the Clegane Trophy, even if his average dips a bit. Other netminders that could seize the award with a strong finish to their season are JB Rift (2.03 GAA), Brick Wahl (2.06 GAA) and Pekka Poutta (2.10 GAA).

    Aidan Shaw Trophy

If Kallis Kriketers' goals-against average looks unsustainable, it's absolutely nothing compared to his save percentage. Only one goaltender had a better save percentage than Kriketers' .944 over the course of a full season, though it might be because of small sample size, as the Reign goalie has only started 6 of the team's 14 games. Put these two stats together, along with the fact that Riga is good enough defensively to help its goaltender maintain good numbers and you got yourself an Aidan Shaw favourite. He'll have to keep it up, however, if he wants to keep runner-ups JB Rift (10 W, .930 SV%, 2.03 GAA), Brick Wahl (7 W, .928 SV%, 2.06 GAA) and Greg Eagles (5 W, .928 SV%, 2.45 GAA) at bay.

    Scotty Campbell Trophy

At this point in the season, I'd say the early MVP is man who's the favourite to win the most awards. Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen could come home from the awards show with the Alexander Beketov Trophy, the Alexander Valiq Trophy, the Sterling Labatte Trophy and the Scotty Campbell Trophy. I'm not even sure if a defenseman was ever named MVP (help me, historians), but if he keeps his pace and ends the season with 30 goals and 100 points as a defenseman, while no forward score more than 110, he could be the first. On the other hand, if Mikko Aaltonen doesn't stop scoring, he could be the 23rd player ever to score 70 goals in a season and only the 5th one in the last three decades. That feat alone could be enough to be named the MVP. However, if neither players keep it up, Kallis Kriketers (4 W, .944 SV%, 1.53 GAA), Julian Borwinn (18 PTS, 62 H) and Hunter Hearst Helmsley (18 PTS, 56 H) could be the ones to come up and steal the MVP title.

Obviously, we're so early in the season that I'd be very surprised if even half of these predictions end up being right. Unfortunately, there was a new sim while I was finishing the article so the stats are already outdated, but I guess it's bound to happen with daily sims. Anyway, good luck everyone with the rest of your season. There's still a lot of hockey to play, and pretty much everything is still up in the air. Dream big!

Quote from Ben Hafkey after being notified of the trade.
"Vancouver has been my home ever since the days in Philly when we won the Founders Cup, and coming into my rookie year with a winning mindset gave me the confidence and tenacity to do my best in the VHL. Vancouver treated me incredibly coming into the league and gave me a team and family I will carry with me for the rest of my life. To the fans, I'm happy I could play to the best of my ability in front of you, you gave me a home to feel welcome in and I'll never forget round one of the S67 playoffs, they were the highlight of my career, and winning the cup just a few weeks later on this squad was world changing for a guy like me. So I'd like to thank GM @Beaviss for giving a young kid a shot at doing great things, and will always remember the time I had in Vancouver as one of the best experiences of my professional career. Thank you.

As for the future, Helsinki won the Cup in my draft year, and I am ecstatic to join the team and help them go for another one. The time I had under Assistant GM @Jubo07 during the Cup run in S66 will hopefully reignite the chemistry we had and make some nice things happen here in Helsinki. The chance they've given me to play in a top-6 role and contribute offensively is great, and I look forward to proving Jubo made the right call bringing me on to the team. Unfortunately, that's all the time I have as we've got a game against the Dynamo in a few hours, and I need to get antiquated with my new teammates and squad. So I'll answer any questions post-game then, thanks."

‘Ladies and gentlemen that was Ben Hafkey @Mclovin, once a stud always a stud!

After talking a step back from GMing i can honestly say I have lost a lot of interest in what is going on in both the VHL and VHLM. That  being said when I heard my former AGM and partner in crime was the new GM of the Titans I don’t think anyone could imagine how happy I was for him. @Jubo07 always was one of the best when it came to the GM game.  I have attributed much I learned about GMing from him and was excited to see him finally get his shot in the Big Show. Seeing this trade happen really gives me the good feels because I know one of my favourite players is going to a GM that will do right by him, just like I knew @Beaviss would in Vancouver when Hafkey was brought in for the Wolves. Regardless of how removed I am trying to be from the VHL seeing my former players do well, going to new and exciting places will always bring me joy.

Congratulations to all 3 of the parties involved that I know well, as well as @Quik whenever he returns ?’

    Quote from Helsinki GM;
"We are not in a position with the age of our players to bank on a player whose development looks to be halted for the foreseeable future. He is not signed going forward to season 70 thus we did not see a future for TEAR with the TItans. Our organization began discussions with a couple teams who had interest. Being able to acquire a cup champion in Ben Hafkey and the 2nd and 4th round picks is a return we simply could not ignore. I had the pleasure of being the AGM alongside GM @BladeMaiden with the Philadelphia Reapers and Hafkey was an absolute workhorse on our roster. His positivity in the locker room radiated and he became a leader for us in a very short period of time. With the addition of cup winning experience and GM familiarity; the match for us could not have played out better. We do risk the opportunity of seeing TEAR potentially break out and become the player he was scouted to be; we wish him the best with Vancouver who already look like a force again not only in the NA conference but the league as a whole."

    Seeing Stars

Julian Borwinn plays set-up man this week with seven assists finishing three of the four games with multiple assist efforts.

Don Draper lead the surprising Prague Phantoms with eight points backed by a huge four-point night against HC Davos in game two.
