    VHL Code of Conduct Policy

    @Members

    Recent events within the league have made it clear that the VHL, both historically and currently, has been running far too much of a "Laissez faire" approach in regards to policing the use of insensitive slurs and other language. Not everyone in the league will obviously agree with how these events went down but the point remains that our approach has simply been too relaxed and things have gone too far without the administration necessarily realizing it. This is not simply in relation to the board, or the discord, or any members in particular but is a wide spread problem across multiple areas of the site and it's due time something is done about it.

    Ultimately the VHL was founded in an interesting time for the internet, 2007. It was a different place back then, a rather toxic place if we are being honest. However it is not 2007 anymore. The kind of words we have seen weren't acceptable (but perhaps more tolerated) back then and they certainly aren't now. To give a few examples, though they should hardly be necessary, using words like gay or retarded as synonyms of stupid is ridiculous and long past its expiration point. This isn't about censoring your posts, being Social justice warriors, or arguing about meaning of words changing over time but rather about the league being inclusive to all its members and potential members.

    With that in mind, moving forward, the league shall be more proactive in avoiding these types of slurs. Staff using them will be treated more severely for obviously reasons but from the top down we expect to see uses reduced and will be punishing those who do not wish to comply or clearly skirt the rules when looked at in context. Punishment will be determined by the blue team on a case by case basis but can include:

    • Warnings
    • Removal of job positions on the site
    • Temporary or permanent suspensions from discord, the forum, or both
    • PT Bans, both full and partial

    Punishment will depend on how severe and how frequent the offences occur and will be made more severe for repeat offenders. It is not a matter of wanting to ban members for this sort of thing but we will if we have to. Quite frankly it's an easy thing to avoid and isn't something that should be a problem in 2019. We will be leaning on our mod team as well as the BOG and general member base to make sure that people who are using insensitive language towards others or groups; whether intentionally targeted or otherwise, are punished accordingly for it. In addition we will be subdividing the Discord better to hopefully spread discussion from general and make it easier to watch for things. In this vein we will also be doing a search at the end of the week of discord and the forums for key words and phrases to keep an eye on things.

    In general things will fall under the guise of our already in place rules regarding Drama, Fighting, and trolling but with special attention paid to people making claims in general instead of specifically targeted. Our aim, as I said, is not to censor but to make the VHL a welcoming place for everyone.

    Obviously this did all stem from an event as I alluded to and there are certain members who shall be receiving punishments for their involvement in that event. The league recognizes that, while these rules were not in place at the time, members were warned to not provoke any further action and to stand down. Instead of doing so several members took matters in their own hands and made an already complex situation far worse for themselves and for the league. For their part in all this the following members shall receive the following punishments:

    @Josh: 1 week PT ban (as in max cap is 6/12)
    @Banackock: 1 week Update ban
    @DilIsPickle: 1 week Update ban
    @Nykonax: 1 week Update ban
    @jRuutu: 1 week PT ban (as in max cap is 6/12)
    @Matt_O: 1 week PT ban (as in max cap is 6/12)

    I know you guys likely won’t be happy about these but it’s what we deem fair given the situation that was either caused or exacerbated by your behaviour. It is our hope that these punishments are the only ones we require in the subject. Given that it’s Thursday and the cap has already likely been hit for you guys the punishments will be served next week.

    It is our sincere hope that the VHL can move on past our old behaviour and into a brighter, more welcoming era. We hope you can all understand that this is not an attack on your rights as members but simply a policy to make sure that your right to speech does not infringe upon the rights over others to enjoy the league.

    Re: SBA Affiliation

    In addition to the above code of conduct the league would like to make a mention of the SBA affiliation which was recently dropped because of the above mentioned issues. The league has been in talks with the BoD of the SBA but is not making this code of conduct simply to appease them or to get back the affiliation. If things improve and those discussions do continue on the right path it may happen some day but that is not our main goal and is out of our hands.

    However we do recognize that stopping SBA affiliation claims on our end, which was done while we sorted things out, is unnecessary and does negatively impact some of our players. For this reason, regardless of our affiliation coming back or not, and to alleviate the concerns of 90% of the population about how their dual membership of the VHL and SBA will be affected, we will continue recognizing SBA PTs as valid VHL PTs in line with previous affiliation agreements. Our updaters were told to put a hold on, not deny, any claims made while the affiliation welfare was down and they have also been instructed to approve back claimed ones for this past week if the PT week was missed by dual membership members.

    Sincerely,
    @Commissioner
    @BOG

    Midnite got a reaction from Enorama in Johnson on moving on from the VHLM
    After playing two seasons with the Philadelphia Reapers and three seasons in the VHLM, Johnson has announced he’s ready to move on to the VHL. Having topped his points total from last year having a total of 65, Johnson is hoping to enter into the VHL and make an immediate impact making his debut with the D.C Dragons. Johnson had an early offseason with Philly missing the playoffs by a single point. During the offseason, an interview was held to ask Johnson how he felt about his last VHLM season and what’s to come in the VHL. Here’s what he said:

    “It’s disappointing for sure. I mean there’s not much you can really do about it. We played to the best of our abilities, but sometimes the better teams just come out on top. I’m truly grateful to have been able to play with such a talented group of guys and I wish nothing but great things for the Philadelphia organization..”

    ”...It’ll be tough playing in the big league. I mean a lot of these guys are on a completely different level. It’ll be a grind for sure to become a top dog in the league, but I’m up for it. I want to be known as a great defenseman in this league and I’m willing to put in some work to get there.”

    1. Just the time away to relax and also work on my game. Always great to have some down time.
    2. Not really. I had them as my choice to win the cup going in. Congrats to them though!
    3. My guess would be a team in need of a good defenseman. Would probably say probably Prague or Toronto.
    4. Gotta root for my country. Go Canada!
    5. Success for my VHL Club. International tournament success is nice, but I'm in the VHL to win the cup and hopefully multiple times at that.
    6. Malmo. I mean they were first in the standings just this past season. Wouldn't be hard to imagine them winning the cup sooner than later.

    Midnite got a reaction from MexicanCow123 in Johnson on Team Canada and Season
    The rosters of the upcoming World Junior Cup were announced earlier this week and of the teams, Ricky Johnson, has managed to find himself playing for Team Canada. When asked about it he said:

    ”It’s every young players dream to be able to represent your country on the ice in the World Junior Cup. At least I feel it is. I’m extremely honored to be given this opportunity to say the least. I feel as though we have a solid roster put together. I’m gonna work hard to hopefully help us come out on top and back to the glory days of S62-64”

    Johnson currently plays for the Philadelphia Reapers in the VHLM. When asked how his current season with them is going he replied:

    ”It’s been tough I can tell you that. After a promising last season, we’ve had a rough go in our current one. It was almost to be expected though. I mean with a change in management and a handful of players entering into the big league, it was hard to see us really remaining as big of a threat as we were in the past. It’s all part of the process though. We’re still a team with a lot of passion and fight. I’m hoping to make this last season with them a good one”

    Midnite got a reaction from DMaximus in Johnson’s Off-season
    It’s been quite an off-season for the young Ricky Johnson. After a successful and yet slightly disappointing Philadelphia season, Johnson would see himself be drafted into the VHL by the newly formed D.C Dragons in the second round as the 18th pick. Sources say Johnson has planned to stay in the minors for an additional year and will continue to play for the Philadelphia Reapers. Having experienced such an eventful break from the regular season, the media caught up with Johnson to share his thoughts of the past events. He said:

    ”A lot has happened. It’s weird how time flies. I’m still trying to get over our second round exit in the VHLM playoffs and the new season is already set to start. I mean wow. On top of that, I’ve been drafted to D.C.. Life sure comes at you fast. It’s crazy to think that one day you’re stepping onto the ice for the first time to being drafted into the VHL. It’s always been a dream of mine and I can’t wait to start playing for the Dragons next season...”

    He continued in explaining his goals for the current season with the Reapers:

    ”...I’m excited to enter my 2nd and final year with the Reapers. We were a team to beat last year and i’m hoping we can continue to be so this upcoming season. Winning the cup is always #1 priority. I also want to be noticed as one of the best defensemen on the ice. That’s always been a goal of mine as well and i’m still sticking to it. Being at my best helps my team be at it’s best and that’s what will help us win games too.”

    Midnite got a reaction from NotAVHLM-GM in Season as a Reaper
    After being drafted by the Philadelphia Reapers for S67, Ricky Johnson would face the challenge of getting use to his new team and environment after a short stint with the Minnesota Storm. In hopes of improving on what could be seen as a “shabby” season, he would end the season with a total of 55 points in 72 games. He also made his defensive presence known having recorded 69 (nice) blocked shots, the second most by any Reaper this season. With the S68 Draft on the horizon, Johnson was approached by the media to answer a few questions in regards to his season.

    Media: Are you happy with how your season as a Philadelphia Reaper turned out?

    Johnson: Very happy, although it’s not done yet. We still gotta power through playoffs and hopefully that’ll end with us hoisting the Cup. Hard to say if that’ll happen for sure, but i’m confident we can get it done with our strong set of guys.

    Media: Speaking of the group, were you able to create any special bonds with your teammates?

    Johnson: I’ve always been a “to myself” kinda guy. So I can’t say I’ve gone out of my way to really interact with everyone. However, that on the ice chemistry is where things really matter and with the record we have it should be evident that we all get along well enough seeing as we are one of the best teams in the VHLM.

    Media: You guys managed to pull of a great season indeed with a record of 57-10-5. Any major reasons aside from team chemistry, that you guys were able achieve such a feat?

    Johnson: Well it’s a team sport so everyone really contributed, but I still gotta tip my hat to a few of the guys on our team. Alex Pearson, Brandon LeBlanc, Dylan Doyle, & Scotty Bigshotty are only a few of the bigger names on our team that really helped get us where we are. I also can’t forget our coach who has also made this all possible.

    Media: What’s on your mind coming into the S68 Draft? Any idea where you’ll be drafted?

    Johnson: I can’t say I’ve given too much thought about the S68 draft up until recently. Even then it’s kind of taken a backseat to my thoughts going into the playoffs. I will say i’m looking forward to it though. It’s been speculated that i’d go possibly mid 2nd or 3rd round. I personally want to improve before then to go higher, but may not have the time. Either way, I’d be happy to be apart of any team willing to have me.

    1. For awards I believe we should have a forward of the year, defenseman of the year and a leadership of the year (most vocal).

    3. It’s always an honor to be in the history of any organization, but it’s especially nice to be part of the one here. I can only hope to be a rememberable player in the time to come.

    5. I don’t believe in giving out too many awards as I feel that would decrease the sentimental value of them. I can’t say for sure what a good number would be, but a number that comes to mind would be at least 6

    7. I like that the league is expanding. Although things do tend to become more difficult to manage for those high ups, in the long run it opens up more league jobs, increases competition and is an identification that there is more activity throughout the site. Always great in my opinion.

    2. I personally feel any addition to our team is a benefit, but having Brock Louth join us will only add on to our already successful season. It's always nice to have a fellow Canadian join the team as well.

    3. I feel like it most likely was an accident. Guarantee the Simmers were craving some at the time.

    7. I feel like we, Philly, have pretty good odds to make a deep run all the way to the finals. With how the season is currently going, I can see us winning the cup as well.

    8. Although he's not a player of our team I'd have to say Zeno Miniti from the Ottawa Lynx. He's been unbelieve so far this season and currently leads the league in points as of right now so it would make sense...assuming they do make it all the way to the finals.

    9. I think Fang could probably squeak in 3 or 4 assists, but as a goalie it would be pretty tough.

    12. I want to win the cup with this team! I can't say I'd hope to really play with one individual player. I'd hope to share the ice with every one of my teammates at some point.

    5. Great actually! We’ve only lost a few times and we’re currently leading the lead in standings. The season is going just as i’d hoped!

    6. Probably late to the party on this question. It was nice being in second place, but is even greater now that we’re in first.

    7. Absolutely this fits my persona. I’ve always been a believer in the saying “hard work pays off” and clearly it is for our team right now. Best believe we I didn’t get where I am if it wasn’t for the work I put in.

    3-S67 is about to start with a Loaded Reaper Roster how do you feel about this?
    Personally I'm very excited. It was unfortunate that I hadn't been picked up by my previous team being Minnesota, but I'm glad to get a fresh start here in Philadelphia. Especially for a team coming fresh off of a cup win.

    4-Guy with the best name on our team and why
    King Czar IV. I like the Roman feel to it and it's pretty unique. I wonder if he's actually a King?

    5-How are you settling in to life in Philadelphia?
    It hasn't been bad actually. Still need some time to get use to it but it's definitely has a more lively feel than Minnesota. It's also a bit convenient for me cause I have a cousin who lives here playing in the SBA. It'll be nice to catch up with him.

    7- Do you eat before or after a game, best pre or post game food and why?
    Definitely after games and I enjoy a nice steak with mashed potatoes. Gives you your protein and healthy fibers all in one sitting. I prefer after games as I feel it's the best way to recover all that energy spent on the game prior to.

    8-What are your personal goals for the season?
    Considering I didn't get to do much last season having played 13 games, I'd like to set a new best in every area of my game. I'd hope to be considered one of the top D-men in the league although I may be getting ahead of myself saying that. So I'd say that I at least get about 40 points to end the season.

    10- One things you would like to see the team do this season.
    Win the cup! This team was able to do it before, it would be cool to be part of winning it again as a member this time.

    With the conclusion of the S67 VHLM Dispersal Draft, Ricky Johnson went from being a mid season pick up by the Minnesota Storm to playing what would be his first full season with the last season champs Philadelphia Reapers. Selected by the Reapers in the 3rd round as the 28th pick, Johnson claims to be approaching this season with a lot to prove after only gaining minimal experience the season prior.

    VHLM media caught up with Johnson a few days after the draft to discuss how he felt about relocating to his new team in Philadelphia and to share his thoughts on the upcoming season. He stated:

    "It's great to be a part of this Philadelphia organization. I had no clue what to expect going into the draft, although I was hoping to stay in Minnesota seeing as I just had settled into the lifestyle there. Nonetheless, I couldn't be more grateful to be where I am now and with this team. The lifestyle will always take some time to getting use to anyway, right? I mean I also have some family ties here so they'll be able to maybe help me out too."

    "I've been working hard this off-season to improve quite a bit. I lacked a lot in overall skill and physically last season, so I'm working on getting those two things up to speed. It'll be interesting to be able to play a full season this year. Not only will I be able to get to know my guys better, but I'll be able to get a full taste of what the VHLM is all about. As for the team, I'm hoping we can make another run for the title, but this time I'm hoping to be a part of that. The organization is still fairly new compared to some of the other teams, so I'd hope to be part of their growing history."

    Upcoming Canadian born draftee Ricky Johnson sat with the media to share his thoughts on his VHLM season.

    "I really wish the season was still going on for us to be honest. It was rough being called up when the season only had 13 games left to play. Makes it worse that we also had an early first round exit too. Regardless, I'm taking this season in stride and I'm overall grateful for the experience it has provided me. I'm also grateful that the Minnesota Storm GM did take a chance on me too. I do wish I had performed better on the defensive end and maybe even cut down on my careless plays that lead to penalties or goals, but those are lessons to add on to the experience I've gained. Moving forward, I'm not entirely sure what my decision will be for the draft. I'd like to move on to the VHL but I also feel that I still have a lot to improve and work on. So for now, It's up in the air. This offseason will be interesting to say the least."
