    Cinnamon: Past and Future

It's been quite a year for Cinnamon Block. There was some initial shock around some parts of the league when Block was chosen first overall by the Prague Phantoms, especially with talents like Soren Jensen and Benny Graves available, but the young defensewoman shut down many critics with a strong rookie season. Block was the only member of the S69 class to make the All Star team this season thanks to her strong defensive numbers across the board. She was one of just 8 defenders to break the 200 hits plateau (and with the fewest minutes of them all), and she was 4th in the league in shots blocked with 142. While her offensive contributions were nothing to write home about, she was 3rd on the Phantoms with 36 assists and may be one of the best passers on the team. She may not be the most graceful on the ice at times, but her physical presence is felt throughout the game.

Still, despite her impressive season, it all led to a disappointing result: staying home during the playoffs. It wasn't all that surprising, given that it was only Prague's second season in the VHL, but a strong start to the season gave people some hope that maybe they were ahead of schedule. As the season went on, it became more clear that the early season success wasn't sustainable and team management made the decision to focus more on player development rather than giving their team the best shot of winning each night. It was a decision that not everyone on the roster agreed with, unfortunately, and there was some disruption in the locker room because of it. According to Block, "It's unfortunate what came to pass, and while the early success was nice, we all knew going in that it was a building season. Not everyone ultimately agreed with that, but it is what it is. I know Prague will come out stronger on the other side, and we're ready to compete with the players that want to be here."

There's a lot of optimism heading into year three of the Phantoms. While it's likely not all of Prague's key players are returning next season, there are rumors that the team is looking to make a big splash this offseason, bringing in a big name talent that could turn the European division upside down. Prague's offseason started on the wrong foot after losing the lottery and being saddled with the 4th overall pick, but team executives remain optimistic about the draft as a whole. Missing out on the top two guys in Edwin THE Encarnacion and Mikko Lahtinen is a bit of a bummer, but goalie Jacques Lafontaine should still be available and could help push or even overtake Soloman Crawford as Prague's goalie of the future in short order. There are also some up and coming talents at forward in Chad Magnum, Lewis Dawson, and Iangenere Risteneen who would very much fit into Prague's future plans. Regardless of what happens it's clear the Prague is ready to announce their true arrival to the VHL.

Another season over, another VHL.com post looking at team TPA growth. The chart compares end of regular season TPAs from S68 to S69.

    Risers:
    1) D.C Dragons  (+3157)
D.C edges out Prague as the expansion team with the most growth. Not unexpected at all that they sit at #1 and #2 considering where they came from.

    2) Prague Phantoms (+2127)
Both expansion teams grew to a point where next year's playoffs are possible. At the end of S69 they sit at 6719 and 6574 respectively.

    3) Seattle Bears (+1639)
Easily the most impressive growth number. Seattle becomes the first team ever to eclipse 10,000 total team TPA by regular seasons end.

    4) New York Americans (+1527)
Not far behind, and almost as impressive considering their trades, is NY. Solid drafting starting to pay off with a bunch of S68 guys all sticking together.

    5) Calgary Wranglers (+1065)
This was the biggest surprise to me personally, just based on my perceptions of the teams. Calgary probably should have made the playoffs this year...

    6) Malmo Nighthawks (+442)
Another surprise to me. Losing Matt Thompson means a lot of TPA needed to overcome, but they did it.

    7) Vancouver Wolves (+313)
Second best team in the league and still getting better. Vancouver did a good job.

    Fallers:
    8 ) Riga Reign (-191)
practically no change. When you are already a top team, small change is a good thing.

    9) Helsinki Titans (-308)
A smaller loss than I expected, but once you rank around 9th, relative loss compared to the rest of the league is more worrying than the absolute loss itself.

    10) Toronto Legion (-308)
Same number as Helsinki, and same comment applies. Beginning of a decline for these two very good S60's franchises?

    11) Moscow Menace (-580)
Lot's of change for Moscow. They were the #1 S68 team TPA team, so this loss doesn't hurt as much as it might look.

    12) HC Davos Dynamo (-4576)
    lol

    VHL as a whole (+4307 => +358 per team)
Is this due to having more members or more TPE handouts? Not sure, but this number doesn't seem too worrying on the inflation front either way, so that's good.

So I personally like how you under the Draft page can see when the last update was made, https://vhlportal.com/teams/drafts/32

I'd love to have that for the team roster view too, would help a lot with lines and keeping on top on players that stop updating for whatever reason.

Jubis reacted to Tagger in Thinking About Accessibility
I don't think it can be understated how important the VHL Portal has been to the VHL's growth over the last ten season or so. We went from a league that pretty much had to contract to eight teams based on player count (even with a number of members having two players at the time) to a league that has 12 teams of full rosters and a big reason for that was how much easier the Portal made it to create and maintain your player in comparison to the old purely forum based ways of the VHL that were used in its first 60 seasons.

But, as a league, I feel like we could always do more to make the league more accessible to new members who come in and find themselves overwhelmed by how the league works. I've got a couple of ideas in mind as to how we could improve the league in that regard; one idea I've had involves making short 1 min or less videos for each PT that covers how to do them and then subsequently claim them in the portal, but I'll have to wait for the right time to record all of them.

Another idea I had was maybe come up with another way of demonstrating what point tasks you can/cannot do in each given week. This isn't exactly as aesthetically-pleasing an example as I'd like due to my limited google sheets skill, but I think you can see the idea that I was going with here, just trying to set up a different way that people can see what's available for them to do each week in the VHL.

A lot of people had predicted it would be an easier win for Seattle, but New York played brilliantly for six games and brought the series to overtime in game seven. We're meeting up with their defenceman Fredrik Elmebeck who had both a good season and playoff, though invisible in game seven.

Victory Associated Press International Division: How do you feel?

Fredrik Elmebeck: Good... and a bit deflated. I'm proud we did so well, obviously we were only one goal from going on to the next round, so it's mixed feelings.

VAPID: We were surprised to see this was your first playoff, you were a name thrown around from the middle of your first season and I guess I just assumed you had more playoff experience.

Elmebeck: Well, when I started in Houston we were in a heavy rebuild and so I joined just the season before they dominated VHLM and won the cup, and S68 with New York was also the start of a rebuild. But yeah, I take a lot with me from this series, and if nothing else that New York will be a contender in future seasons from now on.

VAPID: New York had a bad start to the season.

Elmebeck: Yeah, but I think everyone but one kind of knew we would work through it and persevere; and I think we did that with our pickup in the regular season, and now just barely losing in OT. Great things await in the future.

    VAPID: Plans now?

Elmebeck: Chopping wood. It's a bit like golf, but useful.
