VHLE Coverage: Team Logos, Changes, Pre-Draft Tournament Announced, and more
“A big day for the VHLE, as Logos, Changes, and a Pre-Draft Tournament are announced, amongst others.”

On August 19th, a big announcement was made by VHLE Commissioner Victor about team logos, new changes to some teams, and a pre-draft tournament, which will be held before the inaugural S80 draft. The team logos themselves are very well done, displaying and representing the team/city very well, and are made by skilled graphic designers in the VHL community such as Zetterberg, KaleebTheMighty, and more. Enorama also made a big contribution with the team banners for all six teams. Each banner followed a similar format for the VHL(M) banners, utilizing the team’s colorway and logo in each. Fans have expressed their excitement with the developments, fawning over the logos, and realizing that their player might be in the upcoming pre-draft tournament. There is a lot of excitement and hype surrounding the VHLE, now more than ever, with so many changes and developments coming out all at once.

Before we go further, VSN has some incredible pieces that have recently been released that I would recommend reading. From the immersive and comprehensive look at the Toronto Legion’s recent trading spree Trading Toronto by veteran writer Doomsday, to the newer writer Alex_J32 and his most recent installment of the VHLM Power Rankings. More trades to cover with the full coverage of the Season 79 Off-Season Trade Reviews from Doomsday. A fantastic look at the awards race for both the VHL and the VHLM in Alex_J32’s VSN Presents: VHL and VHLM Mid-Season Awards Race. If you want to see a VSN exclusive interview with VHLE GM’s and Commissioners, look at A Sit-Down With the New VHLE GMs and Commissioners by yours truly.

Team Logos and Changes to Teams:

The main focus on the recent VHLE announcements is the newly released team logos, and for two teams, brand changes. The logos are originally taken directly from older teams that were previously disbanded/relocated, the same going for the team names, outside of two rebrandings. These two rebranded teams had to undergo significant brand changes as of late due to complications with the logos selected for the teams involving potential copyright infringement. To protect the VHL against such things, they decided to change the location and identity of those teams to two new and problem free options, though maintaining influence from two prior VHLM teams. The first of these, the Istanbul Red Wolves, was partially sourced from Alex_J32, fellow VSN writer. He wrote a small article on why Istanbul should have a team–mentioning how it was Europe’s largest city, and how it was located in Europe and Asia which could create storylines from Team Asia of the WJC’s recent success. Red Wolves came from both Victor’s desire to resurrect the name of the Moscow Red Wolves, an old VHLM team, and how the wolf is the country of Turkey’s national animal. Alex had even created a concept logo for the team. The logo featured a red wolf, with a red and silver color scheme; with “Istanbul Red Wolves” in big white font in a circle logo. It paved the way for the final version of the logo, along with influences from the old VHLM team, the Moscow Red Wolves. The Rome Gladiators, according to the post, was chosen due to it being one of the more popular locations on the community polls the commissioners released in June to determine teams. Taking inspiration from another old VHLM team, the Minot Gladiators, the color scheme resembles the colors of the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League. The selected logo has a gladiator in red, black, and gold within a shield-like frame with the same colors. Very clean: easy on the eyes and resembles what the team is all about well. Both of the “new” logos are very clean, display the team’s identity clearly, and have beautiful colors attached to them. I don’t have a personal favorite, as in my opinion they are all equally great.

    Draft Format Announcement/Draft Tournament:

With the inaugural S80 VHLE season coming up very soon, a draft needs to happen to create the official rosters for all six teams come opening night. But how will they do it? According to the recent announcement, they will begin with a pre-draft tournament to figure out the order of the first round, and then conduct a snake draft to determine which team players are on. Snake drafts are a type of draft selection process, where the team who picked last in the round then gets the next pick to start out the next round. It moves in a snake-like order; 1-2-3-4-5-6, 6-5-4-3-2-1, so on and so forth. The pre-draft tournament is a competition between all six teams, where the GMs of each franchise select players from an available list of players who fit the criteria to be allowed in the draft. The winner of this miniature tournament will be able to select whatever pick they want in the first round of the VHLE draft, second gets second choice, etc. That tournament will be held sometime in the near future, as an official date has yet to be released to the public. I am predicting it to be held shortly after the playoffs have been finished for both leagues, maybe a week or two after. Hype is building around the tournament, as many faithful VHLers anticipate their name to be on one of the rosters for the tournament. That would also be our first official taste of VHLE action ever. Lots to be excited about in these upcoming months.

On that note, this concludes VSN coverage on the recent VHLE developments with the team logos, changes, draft order and the pre-draft tournament. If you want to check out some other work that our fantastic crew have been putting out, the links to those pieces will be up above in the page. The hype is real in the VHL community, and especially with me. I cannot wait to cover more, but for now, that’s it folks. Have a fantastic day.

Spence King reacted to Spartan in Nico Pearce Junior Review
    From Thessaloniki to Halifax

Every sports fan in Thessaloniki, Greece knows the name Nikos Galis. Hell, nearly every basketball fan in Europe knows his name. To a young Nico Pearce, Galis and Aris Thessaloniki, the club Galis played for, became a source of inspiration. While Nico was too young to have ever watch Galis play live with the superstar retiring in 1994, 5 years before Nico was born, his father's tapes were chock full of Galis' games. From the ripe age of 5, all Nico knew was being a Thessaloniki fan, and a basketball fan to boot. Naturally, from that time, Nico's father Lander made sure a basketball was in his hands, in a father's bold dream of having a sports superstar of a child. Lander took Nico to a local park multiple times a week, just to make sure that they got plenty of practice in each week - all Nico knew as a child and into his teenage years were basketball and school.

While Nico could play well, he lacked a core factor essentially guaranteed to be a successful basketball player - height. By 9th grade, Nico was still only 5'8, and he had no shot of making his high school's team. In a fortunate visit to Galis Hall, the home of Aris BC, Nico stumbled upon a poster for the Thessaloniki Titans, an up and coming hockey club that had won the tournament in 2011, just 2 years earlier. As a newer program without substantial attention, Nico was able to easily land a spot in the Titans youth program. Hockey was fortunately a spot where his trained athleticism and slight stature would be an advantage, and he quickly took to skating and learning the tools of the sport.

However, the program eventually shut down again due to lack of funding, and Nico was still too undersized as a 5'10 12th grader to continue his pursuit for basketball. Luckily, he was accepted to St. Cloud State in Minnesota to continue his hockey career. Not only did his game develop there in all aspects, but he even grew a bit more, to a more respectable 6'0. His hands and agility were already there, almost a necessity due to his slight stature, but with his recent growth into his body, his physicality has begun to pick up as well.

In his final year with St. Cloud, Halifax GM Sam @Brewins15 reached out to Nico, with an offer to play for the 21st for the rest of the S79 VHLM season. Once the St. Cloud academic year ended, Nico flew out to Halifax where he met with longtime friend Zaza Colors @McWolf , who had also agreed to join the team. It'll be a very exciting time for Nico as he pursues his career in the VHL!

Oskar Kiprusoff's Junior Review: "It Was Meant To Be"

"A picture of Oskar and his teammates celebrating after tying a close and important game against the LIIGA's Lahti Pelicans."

Legends never die. Miikka Kiprusoff, legendary goalie for the Calgary Flames of the NHL, one of their best of all time. His son, Oskar, hopes to continue his legacy on the ice, but in a different league, and a different environment. Born in Calgary, raised in Finland, Oskar chose to take on a similar path of life to his father’s. He played youth hockey in his hometown of Turku, Finland. After he dominated in his local league, he decided to step it up to U18 with TPS Turku Jr, where he recorded outstanding point totals. He was a legend in his homeland, and overseas on social media. Everything was looking up for young Oskar, before he tore his achilles. That made him unable to finish the entire season healthy. He was bummed. He felt like he let his teammates down. How was he ever going to wear the illustrious TPS Turku Jersey, and fight for a spot in the Champions Hockey League? Well, it was a swift and painless recovery for Oskar. He got back on the ice just in time to start his last season of U18, and crushed it. Record breaking point totals. It was nothing for the lively fin. He waited all of his life for this season, and he did not disappoint his father, who like him, shared the high expectations for success. He did so well that at 18 he was thrusted into the TPS Turku lineup in the Finnish LIIGA. He only put up six points, but his spirit and tenacity to keep going each night lit a spark in the locker room. He was a glimpse of light for the struggling squad.

The team finished last in the league. Oskar had let down his father, or so he thought. Miikka was actually quite happy for his son, who was the only one of his two to make it this far.He deserved a big hug from his family, and got it. Many of his teammates received hell for their performance, and the veterans heavily considered retirement as their best option. Next season rolls around, and the team gets off of the bench and scores many goals, shows prolific defense, and locks down the crease. Night in and night out. Oskar shined the brightest. A record high 36 points. Highest ever by a 19 year old in the LIIGA. He now became a locker room, social media, and a press legend all around the world. More than last time. He went from dropping the puck on a frozen pond and recording it, having the videos go viral due to his incredible handles. To become a legitimate hockey superstar, and earning the captaincy for the rest of the season. NHL teams wanted a piece of this pie, but the VHLM/VHL/VHLE offered him an irresistible offer. An offer to play there, and earn millions off of the bat. Oskar reluctantly agreed.

Now the Finnish superstar has signed a waiver deal with the VHLM’s Philadelphia Reapers, giving him 1.5M for one year. This salary attracted the young star to the city of brotherly love. Also, he wanted to be in a foreign place, a place that his dad has never lived in. He loved the town–especially the cheesesteaks, they were scrumptious to him. Now, we will see what Oskar does. He’s expected to start soon, so hopefully he can channel the skills of the legend he was in Finland to America.

Welcome to the VHLM Power Rankings Tracker! I have decided to run power rankings in this format for the rest of the season so that I’ll be able to update it every week, I’ll still be doing the full write up occasionally. With this new format we’ll also be able to showcase standout players (selected by each team’s GM or AGM) in order to shine a light on some players in the M who might not get much attention otherwise. Since this whole thing is brand new if you have any questions, comments or concerns please let me know!

Note: roster moves pertain to specifically the last week.

Cameron Elsby is a S81 VHL Draft eligible defenseman but most of all a S80 VHLM Draft eligible prospect, who hails from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. His older brother, Spencer Elsby, was drafted by the Philadelphia Reapers in the S72 VHLM Dispersal Draft and played briefly for the Missisauga Hounds prior to the draft in S71.

Prior to his time in the GNML and NOJHL, Elsby played youth hockey for Soo Greyhounds U14 AAA, Soo Thunder U15 AAA and the Soo Thunderbirds U16 AAA as an underager and Captained the team the following season Also representing team NOHA at the OHL Cup as well as being selected to Team White of the U-17 Team Canada Roster. Elsby was drafted 21st overall by the London Knights with the last pick in the first round in the 2021 OHL Priority Draft and was poised to make his OHL debut in 2021-2022

Due to COVID-19, Elsby didn’t play in the OHL this year. But, was named to Canada’s U18 roster at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championships in Frisco, Texas and Plano, Texas. Elsby recorded one point in the tournament. He had recorded an assist when he fired a stretch pass at the blue-line in the neutral zone, his teammate collected the pass and scored a snap shot goal from the perimeter.

After an outstanding rookie season with the Thunderbirds', I was fully confident that Elsby would rise in people’s rankings when the OHL eventually got back on the ice for the 2020-21 season, but that didn’t end up happening. As a result, he is taking the best of his situation in making the transition to the VHLM for the end of the S79 Season creating a chance to prove to people he could be drafted in the first three rounds, even though the talent is there. Picking Elsby in the late rounds could be a real bang for your buck pick when we look back on it 10 years from now.

At this point, the next time that Elsby is scheduled to play again is when the today with the Mississauga Hounds as his season kicks off while the Hounds are continuing there playoff rush Elsby has now joined. Potentially, we could see Elsby play at the VHLM/VHLE Top Prospects tournament in Sault Ste Marie Michigan, but the rosters are not finalized yet. There is still much to learn about Cameron Elsby as he is such a RAW Talent with so many uncertainties and unknowns, the public is dying to know more and hopefully we will get to know more about this towering defenseman.

Spence King got a reaction from diacope in Cameron Elsby- Left Defence -(S81) Scouting Report
Big, Big, BIG. What else can you say about Cameron Elsby, he is an absolute giant, the first comparison that comes to mind is Zdeno Chara who only has one inch on Elsby as it is right now. Like most young players he needs to and will get a lot bigger, absolutely not afraid of contact and will drop the mitts. Is extremely mobile for somebody his size and his untapped potential and unique physical assets are what have him being such a hot topic and considered to be drafted so high. He is a great skater but does make some very questionable decisions with and without the puck. But again, his size and skating ability are just too good to pass up. Elsby has just recently signed with the Mississauga Hounds of the VHLM making the jump from his second year in Midget with a little Junior “A” Experience under his belt up to the big leagues with players a decade older than him. There is still very little known about Cameron as of right now while Elsby is in search of a Player Agent we know hes coming from the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds U18 Program and is the younger brother Seattle Bears Defenseman Spencer Elsby

Elsby has excellent vision and playmaking ability, as well as the hockey sense to almost always make the right play. He seems to think the game and anticipate plays better than others out there on the ice. With his skating and stickhandling ability, Elsby is not afraid to skate the puck out of his zone or lead the rush. He can also make a long pass to start the transition game and start an odd-man rush. He has the passing ability and the hockey IQ to quarterback the play from the point. Elsby has the poise to make plays under pressure.

Elsby is an outstanding skater. He looks like he is floating above the ice. He has very good speed and acceleration in both directions. Cameron has a unorthodox stride, but still has the ability to change directions on a dime. He uses the outstanding speed to join the rush or to pinch in at the line. Elsby is rarely caught deep as he can still get back into position defensively thanks to that speed. His agility and footwork allow him to beat defenders one-on-one as well as to walk the line and make quick moves to open up passing and shooting lanes. Elsby has a unique center of gravity which helps his balance and makes him strong on the puck.

Elsby is also strong if not stronger in his own end of the ice. He is a smart player who reads the play well and is well positioned. His skating allows him to maintain good gap control when defending against the rush. Elsby’s size and aggressiveness in his play with a physical game in the corners and in front of the net. He is also not afraid to throw a hard hit if an attacker comes in with their head down. However, Elsby plays a disciplined game, he does not run around and get himself out of position looking for those big hits. Instead, he plays a cerebral game, looking to stop the opponent, get the puck back and start the transition game up the ice

I’d love to see you in a Halifax uniform! To join halifax quote this with #BOATGANG

    19. Thoughts on the team trading Micah Adrienne ( @Poptart ) for Spencer Elsby ( @Spence King ) ?
I know Elsby is a huge threat offensively and that's something the team needs moving forward, this is the second time Adrienne and I got to play together for a short stint

    20. Thoughts on the most recent deal of trading @Kendrick for @jRuutu's player?
Kendrick is the man tbh but you replaced him with an equally cool jRuutu, nothing to say here but I hope both players the best of luck!

    21. Who has been some of the Bears MVP's so far?
Tim "taking the puck downtown" Brown for sure and Andrew Su whose earned the nickname "Tsunami" for his one of a kind offense ability which is fueled by his ability to skate through waves of opposition

    22. Thoughts on the Bears season so far?
This is definitely our best display of hockey in a viewers eyes but deep down there's a lot of sleeping giants waiting for the playoffs so we have to keep our foot on the pedal for our future happenings

    23. what are your thoughts on Toronto once again selling everything after a hot start then stalled season?
They have to trust the process and I know that now specially because of my experience as a new GM in Ottawa, maybe I should have kept our pieces and tried to climb to the top 🤔 Either way I guess the future looks bright!!

    24. What team is the most surprising so far this season in the standings? Why?
Calgary is the one team I knew would compete but they exceeded my expectations because they're a real threat for us now and after they took offense to our trash talking last season who knows how a series would go between us

The time in my life has finally begun starting to get back to anything close to somewhat normal. The VHL Community and being an active presence on the forums and discord are such a joy to my life and now having the time that I can commit to being as involved as possible with hopes of starting up the EAOE again and most of all ELSBY WANTS TO BE GM !!! VHL , VHLE, VHLM .... No matter which organization in any league decides to take Elsby on as AGM or if the VHLE BOG grants him a GM position we know this franchise is inheriting a hockey mind like no other. Elsby is most well known for his scouting reports most of all his coverage with VSN during S73 & S74 as well as his infamous Press conferences that each team that has had pleasure to be a part of Elsby's (AKA Spence King) Press Conferences can most definitely attest to that fact. Elsby/Kings Creativity with content related to his team have been consistently off the charts and always bringing new ideas and fresh images to the community and always making the most in attempt to make the experience as inclusive and realistic as possible , most of all FUN !!
