  1. Graphic courtesy of Leandrofg (Marcel's stats/Daniel's stats) It is done! After 25 seasons of sweat, blood and tears, the Calgary Wranglers climbed Mount Olympus of Icehockey again. The series against Davos Dynamo was harder fought than the 4-1 (3-4 OTL, 5-2, 4-3, 3-2 and 2-1) score would lead you to believe. It speaks for the Wranglers' long term strategy, masterfully executed by GM Kris Rice, that most members of the cup winning team (Braun and Lindbergh being the exception) were drafted and developed by Calgary. The integration of young, promising players was rewarded as not one of the usual suspects Janser, Wolanin or Gonçalves scored the last (and cup winning) goal of the season, but rookie sensation Larry Abbas Jr. The captain was probably the player who was sitting on hot coals the most in the dying minutes of the match. For him, more than the Continental Cup was at stake. Leonard S. Kinnard told him in the second intermission, that Bonnie was brought to the hospital as her labour began and he left it up to the center whether he would finish the match. Dan knew that Bonnie would never forgive him if he missed hoisting the cup and so he stayed. His wife would hold out. He did not like Davos' late equalizer one bit, no sir. But he was relieved when winger Abbas scored the decisive marker on a feed of Wolanin and... Janser. From that moment on, every Wrangler and their mothers protected the net even more than they already did. Alberta has suffered long enough and Dan has an appointment with his wife and son. The team bobbed and weaved and killed the clock. The sold out Saddle Dome counted down the last twenty seconds, when Booberry has already vacated Davos' net in order to give his team the extra attacker. They tried their all to score the tying goal again. Alas, it was not to be and Calgary won the cup. The release, the joy, the noise, the deed is done. The Swiss center could not wait, until he was able to hoist the cup. Once done, he immediately handed it down to Lindbergh, the goaltender who was considering retirement prior this season. He was directly flown to the hospital with the Wrangler-Copter as the streets were a riot with people celebrating in the street and performing imprompt car corso's. It did not help that it was St. Patrick's Day as well. He just arrived in the nick of time, still wearing his uniform to welcome his first born Callum Gareth Yannick Janser to this world. It is hard to tell which achievement moved the Captain more and it is a safe bet that he allowed himself a Guiness or two (and maybe even the odd uisge-beatha). Alas, with great success comes big paychecks and with big paychecks come cap issues. The Wranglers' upper brass have their work cut out for them and it is safe to assume that we will not see the S87 Wranglers in the same constellation again. It is a bitter sweet melody of success. However, we heard from the management that Dan extended his contract with a NTC, which means that he will retire in the Red, White and Black for which he gave and will give his all. Here once more the heroes who won it all and which we may never see again in this composition (except for a tribute game): GM Kris Ricer / AGM Leonard S. Kinnard LW Vincent Laroche-Gagnier LW Landon Wolanin (A) LW Larry Abbas Jr C Leandro Gonçalves (A) C Sax Justice D Phil Strasmore D AirRig GoodBrandSun D Lloyd Braun G Karl Pedersen G Oskar Lindbergh D Marcel Janser C Daniel Janser (C) Normally, we would display the Jansers' stats at this moment, but we think it would not be appropriate in this instance as this cup was won by a team that gave their all for their next men and their fans. Who changed their game from an offensive Juggernaut to a defensive Behemoth. It does not matter who contributed how many goals or points. They stood as one and won the prize as one. Everyone was essential in this cup run for the ages between two of the original Eight franchises. We will be back with news as soon as same are available. https://vhlforum.com/topic/133747-a-tale-of-two-brothers-here-we-go-again/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/133764-a-tale-of-two-brothers-sweepstakes/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/133877-a-tale-of-two-brothers-a-talk-with-the-captain/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/133955-a-tale-of-two-brothers-slaying-bears/
  2. but good Sir aren't you a native English speaker (admittedly of the Oz variety, but who am I to judge?)?
  3. I guess I will be definitely trashed again in the next ahmacast s87 review . Good luck for next season ahma.
  4. It is the VHL's equivalent of a U18/U20 Hockey World Cup
  5. to be fair his yacht does not pay herself so leave him alone
  6. Marino did pretty well. Last season you even got an unofficial award (please check here if you have not already). Unfortunately, Riga is out of the competition at this point in time (Davos and Calgary are in the final). BTW your previous player was Brent Skimmer.
  7. Probably due to the sorry excuse for a gm he had to deal with at the time
  8. Graphic courtesy of Leandrofg (Marcel's stats/Daniel's stats) The Wranglers won the Devon Marlow-Marta Trophy for the first time since the S72 season. They converted their first match point in a convincing manner and are set to meet Davos. This means that one of the longest still ongoing cup draughts in the VHL will definitely end. It also means that no matter what, Switzerland will get a Continental Cup. Let us hope that our Swiss hockey exports will have the better end for them. However, we have some catching up to do and so we proudly present the match report against the Bears. 5-0 Everyone expected a tough match and it was, as the result does not justly reflect on the efforts needed by the Wranglers to wrestle the Bears to the ground. Sax Justice got off to a hot start with less than a minute played. The defensive forward does not score often, but when he does it is meaning full as this was the goal that catapulted Calgary to the finals. The Captain than raised the score in power play before the first horn sounded. After a text book set up to drag the box out, Wolanin took aim but missed the mark. Strasmore took care of the temporarily lost puck and shot... just to miss as well. The disc came back from behind the goal and the Swiss Center could profit from Wilson not being able to switch sides fast enough and buries the puck. Gonçalves had an even strength goal in the second frame as well as one in the third. To round of the offensive trifecta, Wolanin set the final point with his eighth personal marker in this post season campaign. Lindbergh (33 saves) was named first star, with Gonçalves (2g/1a) and Justice (1g/2a) being on the podium alongside him. Worth mentioning is that Strassy had four apples to his name in this match. It appears the veteran defender has saved his best hockey for the playoffs. Lindbergh had a shutout and hence it was a no brainer that he won the duel in net against Wilson (.894). Last season's Shaw awardee had a rather MID game this time around. Calgary's power play was a little anemic (1/6) whereas the penalty kill was of course without reproach (6/6). Marcel left the ice with 0g, 0a, +1, 2 hits and 2sb Daniel was noted with 1g, 1a, +1, 1 hit and 69.81FO% The Bears were a worthy opponent and can go into the off-season with their heads held high. They came further than pundits and the press thought they would and gave the Wranglers a run for their money. But at the end the could not withstand the offensive dynamo that is Calgary. The Jansers' stats read as follows: Marcel: 10gp, 0g, 5a, 5pts, +9, 11 PIM, 14 hits, 12sb Daniel: 10gp, 9g, 9a, 18pts, +5, 27 PIM, 21 hits, 7sb, 3gwg, 5ppg, 56.41FO% and 2 First Star nominations Stay tuned for further updates on our heroes' quest for undying glory. https://vhlforum.com/topic/133490-a-tale-of-two-brothers-an-announcement/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/133747-a-tale-of-two-brothers-here-we-go-again/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/133764-a-tale-of-two-brothers-sweepstakes/ https://vhlforum.com/topic/133877-a-tale-of-two-brothers-a-talk-with-the-captain/
  9. Let's not forget that when Ricer traded Alex Johnston to Helsinki, he got the S81 8th overall pick in exchange (amongst others). This pick turned into the now Captain of the Wranglers... And Alex was my GM in Philly back in S80...
  10. I even recall tapes and phones with a wheel dial if it is any consolation to you... and puplic phone cells (no not cell phones)... Superman would have a hard time changing on a jiffy nowadays...
  11. Worse their team attacked our goalie and we will have none of it
  12. Are 'The Stranger' (most tedious book I ever read) and the 'Meursault Investigations' related?
  13. Oh please, I cannot stand a Vancouver scarf (while still appreciating the amount of effort and skill which undoubtedly went into it). @Ricer13
  14. it was called the 'Bone of Destiny' and of course (and fully not intended by me) people started to use double entendre. But it was a source of LR activity, so I was okay with it... (even Spartan popped in and chanted 'Bone, Bone, Bone' in the chat).
  15. 1. Amped up. Especially after a three point game and a game winner in match five, DJ is ready to put this series to bed. 2. It is playoff hockey and at this stage there are no pushover teams anymore and hattricks are more difficult to come by compared to the bottom feeder teams in the regular season. 3. I do not think it is a skill issue. The competition is harder and we mess with the best. As long as we win games, hattricks are just a very nice cherry on the cake. 4. Both. DJ takes energy from emotions. This can be the joy our our proud Wrangler Fans or the dismay of the opposing crowd. 5. Sofar it is not that bad, winter has had a comeback, but it will be there. My allergies are luckily not so severe. 6. Prosciutto and Funghi or Fiorentina (Ham, Spinach and eggs) are my favourites. As I am a quarter Italian, no pineapples on my watch.
  16. I took it from the match report and spun a story around it. Not meant to placate you.
