Alex 3,204
@v.2 Welcome one and all to the season 78 VHL re-draft! This draft featured it’s fair share of players who exceeded all expectations and those who fell very short; we have some players that would go in the first round today that were drafted as late as 34th overall. While you’re here feel free to check out some of the other VSN articles below. S81 VHL Playoff Preview | Season 79 Malmo NightHawks: Continental Cup Champions| VHL Trade History - S72 VAN/MOS 1st Overall - Hard Markinson @STZ (D) Originally Drafted: 2nd overall to Moscow TPE: 984 Original Pick: Nils Tallinder (676 TPE, 10th in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 288 93 212 305 104 931 591 823 641 With the original pick now being inactive it’s hard for Calgary not to improve with this selection no matter who they select. Given their current roster and Markinson being the best player from the draft class by a wide margin this selection seems ideal for Calgary. Currently Markinson took a huge step forward and became the fourth highest scoring defensemen and will look to pick up some hardware this offseason during the VHL awards. 2nd Overall - Tui Sova @v.2 (D) Originally Drafted: 7th overall to Malmo TPE: 950 Original Pick: Hard Markinson (984 TPE, 1st in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 288 69 181 250 66 979 453 647 600 Tui Sova has continued to show their skill and has been a great acquisition for Los Angeles this past offseason. Sova looks to be a franchise defensemen for any team they play for in the foreseeable future. Additionally, Sova took a big step forward in every statistical category. With Markinson going first overall in the redraft, Sova becomes the best available defensemen and would fall in the second spot. 3rd Overall - Alex Johnston @Alex (RW) Originally Drafted: 8th overall to Calgary TPE: 911 Original Pick: The Seabasstard (835 TPE, 5th in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 216 94 110 204 21 1089 230 564 91 Following a trade in the season 80/81 offseason Johnston found themselves on a Helsinki team that is on the up and up. This past season Johnston finished second in goal scoring with 63 and 9th for points with 125, good enough for the highest goal scoring single season out of the draft class. Given their rate of improvement and ceiling Johnston going 3rd overall seems about the right spot for them. 4th Overall - The Seabasstard @Seabass (C) Originally Drafted: 3rd overall to Moscow TPE: 835 Original Pick: Luc Tessier (778 TPE, 7th in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 288 121 164 285 44 1324 130 243 136 The Seabasstard has had a very good career so far for Moscow and has improved consistently throughout his career. So far The Seabasstard has been the highest scoring player in this draft. With the original pick being Tessier, Davos still would select their franchise center with this pick. 5th Overall - Sven Reikkinen @Devise (D) Originally Drafted: 5th overall to London TPE: 833 Original Pick: Same player GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 288 76 109 185 23 729 82 104 671 Since being drafted in this spot Reikkinen did exactly what he was supposed to do for London prior to walking in free agency to sign with Prague. Reikkinen looks to be a solid defensemen and is without a doubt deserving of going 5th in the redraft, they have continued to improve every season and were a good number 2 defensemen in Prague this past season. 6th Overall - Anze Miklavz @kelvi (RW) Originally Drafted: 15th overall to Riga TPE: 864 Original Pick: Aike van Giersbergen (493 TPE, 19th in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 216 82 106 188 -21 940 51 129 80 Miklavz is probably the single biggest steal in this draft and even with Milk Jugs going inactive, it’s safe to say Riga won this draft with Miklavz and Reinhart. Since being drafted Miklavz has proven to be a consistent point scorer for Riga in the past 3 seasons and looks to be an ideal centerpiece for at least next season as well having already signed. With the original pick Vancouver was looking to draft their goalie of the future, however with no top end goalie being available it’s likely that they would take the best player available in Miklavz. 7th Overall - Nathan Powers @JB123 (D) Originally Drafted: 9th overall to Prague TPE: 769 Original Pick: Tui Sova (950 TPE, 2nd in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 216 41 122 163 55 612 525 345 519 In the season 78 draft Prague went to draft their future franchise defensemen and they nailed it with Powers. Powers has been a solid option for Prague the past 3 seasons and continues to improve scoring at above a point per game pace this past season. The original selection made with this selection has paid off ten fold for Malmo prior to a trade to Los Angeles, Powers would accomplish the same role as Sova did for Malmo. 8th Overall - Luc Tessier @KC15 (C) Originally Drafted: 4th overall to Davos TPE: 778 Original Pick: Alex Johnston (911 TPE, 3rd in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 288 105 126 231 -38 1053 208 284 117 Coming off of a massive season 81 Tessier took a big step forward with a 66 point improvement which should have them in the conversation for most improved. With Calgary selecting Hard Markinson at first overall in this redraft, Tessier would fill the first line center spot on Calgary and really help out their offense. 9th Overall - David Tavau @Ahma (D) Originally Drafted: 11th overall to Davos TPE: 653 Original Pick: Nathan Powers (769 TPE, 8th in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 288 13 157 170 -68 167 161 261 506 David Tavau has improved steadily since their first season in the VHL where they recorded 13 points and were a -40, to this past season where they had 63 points and were a +1. A pass-first defensemen, Tavau has been an important part of Davos’s blueline for 4 seasons now and looks to be the perfect complimentary piece to Reylynn Reinhart on their first pair. With this pick Prague took the best defensemen available, and with Powers going earlier, Tavau slots in here. 10th Overall - Bogdan Trunov @qripll (C) Originally Drafted: 22nd overall to Warsaw TPE: 770 Original Pick: Milk Jugs (287 TPE, 37th in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 216 97 127 224 -36 1091 129 345 96 When he was drafted Bogdan Trunov was expected to be a solid piece of Warsaw’s future with an offensive upside, since then they have surpassed all expectations and are just coming off of their first 100+ point season with 106 points and 51 goals. Trunov has a very bright future in Warsaw and will lead this team into the future. Looking back at the draft, Milk Jogs was selected to be a cornerstone defensemen for Riga and went IA shortly after the draft, retrospectively Trunov going to Riga would make a lot of sense given their current roster and the lack of active defensemen from this draft class. 11th Overall - Henri le Massif @Garsh (LW) Originally Drafted: 13th overall to Los Angeles TPE: 645 Original Pick: David Tavau (653 TPE, 11th in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 216 72 71 143 50 763 403 879 91 Henri le Massif has had a solid VHL career so far which saw them improve each and every season and they have proved to be an important part of Los Angeles’s core forward group. A solid power forward, le Massif excels on the defensive side of the puck and will likely one day be in the Boulet conversation. Henri le Massif is one player any team would like to have and would slot in perfectly in Davos at pick number 11. 12th Overall - Darth Kaprizov @Darth Kaprizov (C) Originally Drafted: 34th overall to Calgary TPE: 614 Original Pick: Bastian Greiss (275 TPE, 38th in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 72 29 31 60 -10 290 26 69 30 Darth Kaprizov has had the largest jump between original draft position and current draft ranking, currently sitting at 13th in the draft class. Similarly to Minion, Kaprizov spent 3 seasons post-draft developing to get to where they are today. Shortly after being drafted Kaprizov was traded from Calgary to Davos in a trade that saw Calgary attempt to improve for a playoff run. This past season Kaprizov fit in as a second line winger for Davos, where they recorded 60 points. With London Kaprizov would likely find themselves on the first line for the foreseeable future, and would be a key piece for London’s future. 13th Overall - Nathaniel Minion @Minion (C) Originally Drafted: 20th overall to Malmo TPE: 572 Original Pick: Henri le Massif (645 TPE, 12th in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 72 26 61 87 21 362 41 75 39 Currently Nathaniel Minion looks to be the future top center in Malmo and is playing a key role in their current playoff run. After spending 3 seasons post-draft developing Minion made his VHL debut this season and lived up to the hype leading the rookie scoring race at times, falling off just at the end of the season. In this spot Minion would fill a similar role to Henri le Massif as well as serve as a depth center option. 14th Overall - Jannik Nylen @DreMin15 (D) Originally Drafted: 26th overall to D.C. TPE: 503 Original Pick: Tynan Slyvester (454 TPE, 23rd in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 144 14 54 68 6 212 49 77 90 Having played 2 seasons in the VHL now Nylen in season 79 and 81 due to spending season 80 in the VHLE where they were one of the top defensemen in the league with 95 points in 72 games for Bratislava. The one season break from the VHL served Nylen well as we saw their point production jump from 7 in season 79 with D.C. to 61 this past season with Toronto. As for this pick Nylen would have filled the exact same role as Slyvester as a stable part of Warsaw’s blueline. 15th Overall - Tobias Reinhart @Spaz (G) Originally Drafted: 32nd overall to Riga TPE: 502 Original Pick: Anze Miklavz (864 TPE, 4th in draft class) GP W L OTL SV% GAA SO 67 32 30 3 0.911 3.12 6 One of the biggest jumps between original draft position and current projection, Riga hit gold when they drafted Reinhart 32nd overall. This past season Reinhart came very close to taking home the Clegane Trophy for the lowest GAA in the VHL. Reinhart has stepped up and fulfilled the need that he was drafted to address, and he would do the same here, just Riga would have needed to draft Reinhart 17 picks earlier. 16th Overall - Otto Numminen @Otto Numminen (C) Originally Drafted: 25th overall to Prague TPE: 503 Original Pick: Damien Salducci (465 TPE, 21st in draft class) GP G A P +/- SHT PIM HIT SB 72 34 61 95 5 391 66 148 41 Coming off of a season where Numminen should be in the top rookie conversation, Numminen has cemented themselves as a key player in Toronto’s core. Since the draft Numminen has been consistently climbing the draft rankings and currently sits 17th in the draft class. Looking back at the season 78 draft Numminen would have fit well in Helsinki as a center of the future as the team had just been coming off of a Continental Cup Finals loss with a majority of their core either retired or retiring the following season. Thank you for reading our season 78 redraft, stay tuned for next season when we look at season 79!
