Hello and welcome to the VSN’s presentation of the S89 VHLM All Star Skills Competition held in The Bayou City, Houston, Texas! Tonight, the best of the best the VHLM has to offer will compete in 5 separate challenges. Fastest Skater, Passing, Puck Handling, Hardest Shot, and Save Streak. We’ve got some incredibly talented players taking part, so without further delay, let’s get into it!

    Fastest Skater Challenge

The Fastest Skater Challenge involves players skating a full lap around the rink in the shortest amount of time as possible. Our competitors for this challenge are: YaBoi Oven @Doomsday, Mikko Borisyuk @Minebro, Walter Fitzroy Jr @Moon, Baby Moo Moo @Elvis, and Catia Goncalves @cLoWn.

And the winner of the Fastest Skater Challenge is…

    Passing Challenge

Next on our list, we have the Passing Challenge! This challenge will involve the player being positioned at center ice, attempting to get the puck into 6 different targets scattered all across the offensive zone. Players are only graded on their time, so they’re allowed to take as many passes as they need to hit their marks! The players competing for this challenge are: Oden Bell @WhiskyJack, Ontario Leblanc Jr @Psanchez55, Maxim Anisimov @McLovin, Miroslav @Zyrok, and Lim Jahey @Cuffy

With that said, the winner of the Passing Challenge is…

    Puck Handling Challenge

Up next on our list of challenges, we have the Puck Handling Challenge. This challenge requires the players to navigate through obstacles while maintaining control of the puck in the quickest time possible. Our players competing for best dangler are: Conference Prince-de-Galles @UnkemptCL4PTP, Carson Walker Jr @Cwalker, Xiver Zilla @jhatty8, Jorji Costova @Hybrid1486, and Tyler Swift @lilchrist

Without further ado, the winner of the Puck Handling Challenge is…

    Hardest Shot Challenge

Arguably the most anticipated challenge of the night, up next we have the Hardest Shot challenge. Each player is given three opportunities to hit the puck into the net with the highest speed possible. Fastest speed of the shot will win the challenge! The competitors for most lethal shot are: Dominik Kopecky @DustyMclaren, Severus Targaryen @Banackock, Sjin @Sjin, Axle Gunner @Steve, and Harry Callahan @dstevensonjr

Drumroll please! The winner of the Hardest Shot challenge is…

    Save Streak Challenge

Up last, but certainly not least, we have the Save Streak Challenge! This challenge pits Goalies against Players from their opposite Conference in a test of endurance and skill. The Tendies will face six shots, in which if they allow a goal, they’re allowed to continue. After the seventh shot however, if a goal is allowed the streak will end. The Goalies competing for best brick wall are: Karl Herzlich @LastGoon007, Boolie Buchholz @Jacob buchholz, Devon Giguere @omniscius, and Clark @cl4rk

And the winner of the Save Streak Challenge is…

Overall, an incredible showing by our VHLM All-Stars. Everybody involved should be proud of the work that they put in, and enjoy the pride of representing their teams and the league in this head on head of the best the M has to offer. That’ll do it for this presentation of the VSN’s coverage of the S89 VHLM All Star Skills Competition. I'm Marcus Svedberg, wishing you all a good night!

One positive I am really liking is that now the people who are truly working hard and earning that TPE are getting rewarded for it. If you look at the top 10 in scoring last season the majority of players are up over 1000 TPE. It’s frustrating to work hard and get beat out by players who are 5-600 TPE. This Hybrid strategy has really balanced that out nicely.

I do feel like there is still a meta. It’s very easy to build a score first build but it’s not as effective as it was two seasons ago. At least from what we’ve seen in this small sample size.

Well a big positive is simply that we've mitigated a known exploit to the sim engine without having to go through the process of changing engines completely. I think that's probably the one that newer members won't really know of, and the current system is all that they will know moving forward.

Another is also that we've adjusted scoring league-wide a bit, sharply reducing the number of 100+ point scorers. 10th place on the scoring leaderboard in S82 had 125 points. 1st place in S83 had 122. I think we had multiple teams between S80-S82 with 5-6+ 100 point scorers, which is absolutely insane to think about. Goalies played absolutely horrendously and were generally non-factors for a lot of that time period. We had a goalie win the Slobo and two goalies be considered for the Kanou. It's really helped out those users who willingly create in the most difficult position to play long-term.

The biggest negative to me is that absolute ineffectiveness of players in the VHLM, and generally players under like 300 TPE. The actual STHS attributes for those M players look absolutely disgusting, in the 40's and 50's. It's very difficult to get a distinction between PA/SC without about 30-40+ TPE.

That does lead to another positive in that people shouldn't be as comfortable sticking around in the VHLM for longer than they should be. With a lower cap, we had people moving out of the M faster anyways, but with builds being so "bad," it's also sort of contributed to people not choosing to cap out at 200 and stick around in the M anymore. Obviously the people who want to stay just for fun will continue to stay down, but your player is just ineffective without more TPE. You can't really build into what you want to be until 300-350 TPE.

Final negative for now since this has been a lot, but probably just general confusion about the attributes and seeing progress in your player. A lot of upgrades do not lead to a direct STHS attribute increase and that's definitely frustrating. Some say that it makes TPE worth less, but I feel like it makes TPE even more valuable. The more favorable ratio in the old system obviously makes it more satisfying to upgrade, but it simply made the STHS attributes absolutely ineffective. We fucked with our engine by pumping players full of 99 overall attributes into it, but now we rarely see players with STHS attributes over like 93-94 without significant input. So it's a bit of a negative and a positive as well, users feel like it's a lot more frustrating to be upgrading stuff, but it works a lot better with our engine.

I'm a pretty random dude to be asking such questions, but I'm very interested in change management and this one was a doozy as far as I'm concerned. That said, I wasn't really around for the "meta" and it's been years since I was really following the VHL closely.

I'm just curious how everybody feels about the change after one season, knowing that it's too early to really understand the impact but long enough to have an idea about the implementation. Positives? Negatives? Neutral observations?

The worst shooters in the league

Hi all, today we will be looking at the people that are the worst shooters in the league. Which players try the hardest but just cant seem to find the net? You will all find that out today in this week’s edition of my point task.

Kristof Welch - Left Wing - HC Davos Dynamo
Currently the worst shooter in the league might surprise you. It is @Juice ! While he scored 14 goals after his trade to Warsaw, he was held scoreless in four games with the HC Davos Dynamo, resulting in the best score of 0,0% shooting!  Sure he picked it up and is almost at 10% now, but as the only player with 0,0 for a specific team, it felt worth pointing out.

Girts Galvins - Left Wing - Warsaw Predators
While Welch picked up some nice goals in Warsaw, we cant say the same for @”Girts” who manage to just score a single goal this season on 118 shots total. This total brings him up to 0,85%, but considering this is his rookie season, there is no doubt he will further improve during his career. Start low, aim high should be his plan

Deagun Rust - Right Wing - Los Angeles Stars
We find the second rookie on our list in third place. @Spade18 has scored three times so far this season in a total of 156 shots. This gives him a shooting percentage of 1.92%. Being on the league’s worst scoring team with only 89 goals in 55 games, it had to be expected he wouldn’t score much. So just like Galvins, this is something we can only see become better in the near future.

Finn Davis - Center - Los Angeles Stars
On fourth place we find Finn Davis, another rookie player. In his first season with the Los Angeles Stars he also scored 3 goals in total, but he used two less shots for this compared to rust. Due to this @M1nT just places below his teammate, but the battle remains open for the rest of the season. It might come down to which ever of them shoots the least amount of times in the final stretch. Davis has currently a shooting percentage of 1.95%, so its just 0.03 % difference

Armani Calamari - Center - Toronto Legion
Just being on a top team does not guarantee you a better shooting percentage, its something we already saw with Galvins. The same can be said for @WildfireMicro, who might be in the running for worst decline since the previous season. Armani Calamari scored 32 times in 72 games last season, but only found the net just once this year. Ofcourse this is also related to the attribute changes, but it’s sad to see such numbers after an excellent rookie and sophomore year. With a 1.96% shooting percentage it’s really close to the previous players, but for now Calamari finishes out the top 5. The best statistic of the season however also comes on Armani’s name. All his goals this season were game winning goals. So if Calamari scores, it’s the game winning one.

Hard Markinson - Defense - Moscow Menace
Now for the fun part. Here we find my buddy @STZ , as the second highest defenseman in tpe, this is a player you would not expect to see in the worst shooters of the league. But here we are, Hard Markinson did score a nice total of 8 goals, so more than the ones before him on the list. But he also shot a whole lot more as the others, a total of 237 in total. This lead to a shooting percentage of 3.38%.  So while his shooting has not been as good as he might have hoped, i’m sure a lot of these shots led to goals, as he does have a nice amount of 63 assists so far.

Dabnab Shaw - Defense - Malmo Nighthawks
The second defenseman on the list can’t really be compared to the previous one in this stage of his career as @Dabnad is just a rookie. But there shooting % is really close. He scored three times on 83 shots, so a whole lot lower volume as Markinson before us, but to have similar stats as a possible future Hall of Famer, even if it is a low shooting percentage, is a nice feat to have.

Nathan Powers - Defense - Prague Phantoms
The third defenseman in a row is one of the prague phantoms. Coming from a 15 and a 20 goal season the prior years, Powers definitely has taken a step back in terms of scoring, i’m quite sure we can blame the attribute changes for that. It atleast has lowered his shooting percentage to the 8th lowest in the league. Powers is the final player with a shooting percentage under the 4 %. His 130 shots lead to a total of 3.85 % shooting. He isn’t having a bad season as his 41 points in 56 games is pretty respectable still. @JB123 will enter his first regression season next year, so we will see if these stats change again. Will he shoot better again as this year? I’m saying he will rebound for sure, showing this season was a fluke for Powers.

Drakon Zabastovka - Defense - Vancouver Wolves
Sting Chameleon - Defense - Toronto Legion
A fourth and fifth defenseman are holding the shared 9th spot together with a shooting percentage of 4.35% each. A coincidence maybe, but its a fun fact to see that both of them are still in their rookie years as well and both of them scored three times on 69 shots (i know @”shindigs” will love that number),  so for @Hybrid1486  and @DarkSpyro  it will be a nice heads up battle to see which one of them will be the least bad shooter once we hit the end of the season. Zabastovka has two more games to play, so that could work both in his advantage as disadvantage depending how you look at it.

It will be nice to see which of these players will still improve and escape being in the top 10 of worst shooters. One goal can really make a difference at this point. The only certainty at this point is Welch keeping his top spot for his Davos tenure.
