17th Annual Unofficial VHL Regular Season Awards – S82
Another exciting regular season has come to a close. That means we can dole out some regular season awards! Welcome everyone to the 16th Annual Unofficial VHL Regular Season Awards honoring the highs and lows of S82! Thank you to everyone that reads this.
These awards have been created by me. There is no voting process and they are not officially recognized by the VHL Board of Governors. I wrote descriptions for most of these award names in the original award post.
For each award, I list the winners from the last 5 seasons. If you want to check out the award winners from every season, use this link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sAZtX3bxVpPTIsKe1rSRVOenH1-iyWzbQEdR9ZvYOdU/edit?usp=sharing
I also document the “all-time” record for each category. Of course, by that I mean all-time for the existence of these awards, not all-time, all-time. Clear? Ok, good. Let’s get things underway!
The Pylon Award (worst +/- rating) – creed @assassin6898
As the sim engine is getting stretched beyond its limits, we are seeing records just get completely shattered. Last season, chris foley shocked the world by destroying the all-time record for worst +/- by 19. That is absolutely nothing compared to what creed did this season. creed set a new all-time record with a -156! Let this be a warning to all lowercase-only named players.
Having done this for as long as I have, you see records come and go. Normally I’m hesitant to use absolute terms, but this case is extreme, so I’ll make this claim: We will not see this record broken, ever.

The Major2 Award (most major penalties) - Owen Taylor @Owen Taylor
Newcomer Owen Taylor showed they are not afraid of spending some time alone in the penalty box. They committed 12 major penalties for a total of 60 PIM from those majors. That is more PIM just in major penalties than Taylor had all of last season.

The Timex Award (received most hits) – Bogdan Trunov @qripll
Trunov learned first-hand what the cost of being great is. In their case, it’s getting hit. A lot. More than anyone has ever been hit before, in fact. Trunov got hit an all time high 408 times. That’s 65 more than the next closest player (Guy Lambert @Spartakiller2) and 115 more than 3rd place (Jonathan Ori @ROOKIE745). Amazing.

The New Shin Pads Award (most blocked shots) – creed @assassin6898
creed did quite a number of the Pylon Award earlier, that is nothing compared to what they did with this category. Previous all-time high shots blocked was 242. creed blocked an inconceivable 460 shots! That is 218 more than the previous all-time high. That difference itself would have won the award for a handful of seasons. Unbelievable. I know I said this on the Pylon award, but I really mean it now. This record will never be broken.

After missing out on the award last season, Chicken Wing, made it known how much they need to be on the ice. Maybe that’s because of food safety issues as well. I don’t know. Regardless, the Warsaw coaches listened and sent Chicken Wing out on the ice for an all-time high 2,511 minutes. An average of 34.89 minutes per game. MexicanCow123 reacted to fromtheinside in FTI's VHL Dream Team
Hello VHL'ers! It's theme week and we've been tasked with putting together VHL "dream teams". I'm sure everyone has their own personal preferences, but this is the lineup I am throwing out there. To me, these are some of the best players I've encountered since coming into the league in Season 74. Of course, I am biased and also throwing some friends of mine in here, but it's my list so frick off. Without further ado, let's get right to it!
Forwards
@Ricer13 Kris Rice (C)
504 GP- 237G, 306A, 543PTS
For my man on the dots, I went with none other than the current GM of the Calgary Wranglers, Ricer! Long before Ricer was promoted as the GM of Calgary, his first gen player Kris Rice was drafted there and went on to play his first four seasons there. Ricer enjoyed a solid seven-year career, but despite his impressive TPE earning, and being on some pretty good teams, he never was able to win the elusive Continental Cup. Just because he was cup-less though, does not take away from the fact he was an absolute beast out there on the ice. He was a high-caliber two-way player who consistently put up offense while also being a beast in the faceoff circle. On top of that, Ricer is one of the biggest class acts in the league and having him in the dressing room with the boys would definitely be a plus in my books!
@BOOM Gunnar Odinsson (W)
431 GP- 223G, 284A, 507PTS
Many of you may not know, but Gunnar Odinsson was originally a defenseman who eventually converted over to forward early in his career. Unlike almost everyone else on this list, I actually played with Odinsson multiple times over the course of his career. We both played on the Marlins together in the VHLM and while we lit the league up that season, we couldn't capture that Founder's Cup unfortunately. From there, we both ended up on the Toronto Legion in what seemingly looked to be an incredible young core. Needless to say, that didn't exact pan out the way either of us had hoped. A few seasons later, fate would intervene and cross our players paths once more as Boom came over from Calgary to Malmo. Gunnar's two seasons in Malmo were the best of his career. Season 79 saw him and I capture the Continental Cup and it was also a season where Odinsson absolutely dominated. Aside from the team winning the Cup, he went on to win four personal trophies including playoff MVP. Boom has always been an upstanding teammate and very kind to me. He would make a perfect addition to my dream team!
@Zetterberg Ray Sheilds (W)
432GP- 200G, 244A, 444PTS
A lot of you newer users may not recognize this user, but Z used to be a very active member of this community, and his first gen player Ray Sheilds (yes that's the way it's spelt, cringe I know) was a pretty good player all things considered. It's always funny to me reflecting back during this time. Z would always brag to me about how good his player was, and I would always troll him and tell him Sheilds was shit to get him wound up. But truth be told, Sheilds' six-year career was mostly impressive. Taking out his rookie season, and his final season in Riga that was a bit of an anomaly, Sheilds was a consistent producer and a fairly clutch performer as well. He strung together four straight seasons in which he put up a minimum of 80 points or more and even broke the 100 point plateau in Season 76. The peak of his career came in Season 75 when he was a crucial piece to Malmo capturing the Continental Cup. Those playoffs saw him put up 28 points in 19 games and he famously scored the game winning goal in the deciding game of the cup final. I definitely wouldn't mind having a player of that ilk on my team. Also him and Boom can collab on some sick drip for my team! He traditionally played center, but like all good dream teams, centers are getting shifted to the wing, so deal with it Z!
Defense
@Juice Kristof Welch (D)
478GP- 139G, 402A, 541PTS
For anyone that knows me, you knew this one was a layup. Kristof Welch is the only active player on my dream team. He is currently on his seventh season with one possible season remaining next season if he so chooses. What's not to like about Juice? He is a legend in the community thanks to his pie-in-the-face and karaoke highjinx, but he is also one of the best homies you could ever meet. I was lucky enough to stumble upon Juice when he first joined the league back in Season 75. I was a rookie AGM for Yukon and we signed Kristof Welch (a dlamb multi) off waivers. He immediately popped in Discord and was like a sponge, totally soaking in all the info we were giving him about how to run your player. He was off to the races and has went on to be one of the most impressive first gens I've encountered during my time here in the VHL. On the ice, he has been one of the most dominant and consistent d-men over the past handful of seasons. His last three seasons he has put up over 100 points and he is on pace to do so once again this year. He's one of the best playmaking blueliners in the current generation of VHL players. But aside from all that, he's my bud. We won a cup together in Yukon as management, we scavenged the lands of Tarkov together and he told me he liked the way I smell boi. He even told me about pretzal. Juice is love, Juice is life. Easiest dream team pick I ever made.
@Spartan Alex Letang (D)
504GP- 128G, 439A, 567PTS
The other defensemen on my team will be none other than Alex Letang. Spartan's player broke into the league in Season 73 and was truly a model of consistency for seven seasons. His career has a lot of parallels to Ricer's actually. He spent his first four seasons in Moscow, where he is now the general manager. Unfortunately, also like Ricer, he never was able to win that Continental Cup but that didn't take away from his ability to perform year after year. In addition to impressively being over a point per game as a defenseman in his career, during the latter half of his career he also developed a physical aspect of his game that saw him rack up a ton of hits, which made him a nightmare to match up against. His best season ironically came in Season 79, which was his final year. He popped off putting up 25 goals and 94 assists for 119 points for the LA Stars. That incredible season saw him rack up four individual trophies which is incredibly hard to do. When I was building Scotty Kaberle for my own player, Spartan's player was who I tried to model myself after. So who better to add to my dream team?
Goalie
@MexicanCow123 Jacob Tonn (G)
342GP 200-104-31, .918 SV%, 2,78 GAA
To round out my dream team, I needed a solid tender to man the crease. This one was an easy choice as well, as Cow is a friend of mine and someone I have been close with since joining the VHL. Before becoming the VHL's most hated meta-player, Cow played under the guise of Jacob Tonn, an honest, hard working goalie who enjoyed a solid six-year career which included a Continental Cup which he earned in his rookie season as Seattle's backup goalie. He notably also won three straigh Clegane trophies, under two different teams which is pretty impressive. Tonn was one of the most steady goalies during that time and he would make a great choice for my dream team. Aside from the on-ice performance, Cow and I have been homies for quite some time and I would always roll with him. Whether it's my conquest to educate him as much as possible, or our time playing games together, or even just shooting the shit on Discord, Cow will always be one of my closest buds in VHL.
So there you have it! This is my hand-crafted team that I've chosen. Do you hate it? Probably! Let me know how much you hate it down below While I have some personal friends on this list, all these players at one point or another were great players in the VHL. I think it would be boring to just go by the absolute best statistical players from a certain timeframe. Maybe when this theme week gets recycled in 10 seasons from now I will have a new dream team with players of the current generation of VHL, but for now this is the squad I'm rolling with!

The Rise of Jerome Reinhart and the Fall of Postseason Records
What a season S81 turned out to be!
League offense, which had been on an upswing in recent seasons due to expansion and the retirement of much goaltending talent, perhaps hit the peak of the pendulum swing as the VHL saw Seattle’s Justin Lose post the first 70-goal, 140-point season since Podrick Cast’s historic campaign in the scoring explosion of S62 and Moscow’s blueliner Aurelien Moreau became only the sixth player in league history to dish out 100 assists - for the first time since Joel Jarvi did it in S53! The Vancouver Wolves played red-light roulette with the rest of the league as their historic offense produced the most goals (381), assists (668), points (1049) and shots (4146) since S20. The Malmo Nighthawks’ power play (33.3%) was the most efficient since S21. And, in an unsurprising correlation, London goalie Tater Tot faced the most shots (3992) of any netminder since S20.
However, the regular season was just an appetizer to the onslaught that the Wolves generated in the playoffs on route to their second-consecutive Continental Cup, both times at the expense of the also dangerous Moscow Menace.
But before delving into this most recent postseason, a little history to set the stage:
During the three-season span of S32-S34, the VHL postseason record book was rewritten by a few stellar performers that set the new gold standard for playoff brilliance and that standard has stood the test of time for close to 50 seasons. Over the years, some have come close but the records have stood relatively unmatched and unbeaten.
Despite leading the VHL in offense, the S32 New York Americans ended up 5th in league standings causing them to start in the play-in round. The Americans’ offense stayed red hot as their stars outshone everyone else and set numerous playoff records after defeating Riga in seven games for the franchise’s second Continental Cup. New York right winger Troy Athera tied Scotty Campbell’s 27-season record for assists in a postseason with 20. Teammate Connor Evans led all playoff scores with 31 points which was one more than Campbell’s record of 30 also set in S5. Future Hall-of-Famer Tukka Reikkinen also broke a Campbell record as his 16 goals bested Campbell’s 13 set in S4. Perhaps the most impressive feat though came from New York’s Radislav Mjers who also tied Campbell’s 30 points as a defenseman which garnered him the Daisuke Kanou Trophy as playoff MVP. He broke the record of 25 that had been set the season before by former American Damon Wolfe, who had bested Alexander Sauve’s S18 record of 20 and set the new league mark of 6 power play goals. Mjers also set the record for goals by a defenseman in the postseason with 12 – a record that still stands today.
In S33, more records were meant to fall. After losing a heartbreaking Game 7 in the Finals the season before, the Riga Reign entered S33 hungry to avenge their loss although they did it the hard way. And no one was hungrier than Riga captain Elijah Incognito, the reigning Labatte Trophy winner. He was unstoppable in the playoffs, dishing out a VHL record 24 assists and 34 points. He also set new league marks scoring 9 of his 10 goals on the power play and garnering 16 power play points. Incognito won the Kanou Trophy for his brilliant performance. Teammate Thomas Corcoran also broke the previous VHL playoff assist record with the second-most in history with 22.

S34 was the year of Alexander Chershenko. Thought by many to be on the decline in his final season, Ukrainian center Chershenko cemented his place in the VHL archives by leading the league in goals and points in the regular season in spite of being traded twice. He then put on an offensive display for the ages in the playoffs. In the first two games against New York, he scored consecutive hat tricks, including the overtime goal in Game 1 and the game winner in Game 2 and had a total of 8 goals in the seven game series win. He willed Calgary through another seven-game series win against Quebec only to lose the Continental Cup in Game 7, 2-1 in overtime, to the Helsinki Titans, a game in which he scored the Wranglers only goal. He would finish his career setting new league postseason records with 18 goals and 36 points and tying Incognito’s 16 power play points. He added his second Kanou Trophy to his collection but missed out on a third Cup.
Now back to the present day…
In Vancouver’s first series against the Toronto Legion, the Wolves averaged an insane 7 goals per game and demolished the Legion 4-1 in five games. Third-year left winger, Jerome Reinhart, who led Vancouver in goals in the regular season with 61, good for fourth in the VHL, went ballistic and averaged 4 points-per-game in the series scoring two hat tricks including a four-goal game (and the series-winning goal) in Game 5. Reinhart was named one of the 3 Stars every game and was the 1st Star three times. He also had two game-winning goals to make his stat line of 13 goals and 20 points in five games absolutely incredible.
The Wolves would face a much tougher opponent in the second round in the Calgary Wranglers, who were the VHL’s hottest team heading into the playoffs riding an 11-game winning streak. The Wranglers would indeed slow down the Wolves, taking them to a full seven games, including three overtime thrillers, but Vancouver would prevail behind Reinhart’s second 5-point game and second series-winning goal of the playoffs. And that is just where the history begins.
In Game 7, Reinhart opened the scoring at 10:03 with tying Chershenko with his 18th of the playoffs. Just over five minutes later, Reinhart scored again, this time on the power play to set the new VHL record at 19 goals – and he did it in nine fewer games than Chershenko. Then at 17:25 in the third period with the game well in hand, Reinhart chalked up an assist on Corey Kitson’s power play goal, his third helper and fifth point of the night to tie Chershenko for points with 36 – again in nine fewer games! And now Vancouver still had another wholes series to play. How far could Reinhart and the Wolves go?
Waiting for the Wolves were the menacing Moscow Menace who were led by defenseman Hard Markinson who was also playing at a historic pace and would end the playoffs with a couple of records of his own with 27 assists and 37 points to break Incognito’s marks of assists by a skater and points by a defenseman.
Game 1 saw Vancouver edge the Menace 5-3 in a back and forth battle. At 11:55 in the first period, Jerome garnered an assist when his brother, Tyler Reinhart, ripped a power play marker past Moscow goalie Papa Emeritus. That assist (his first of three on the night) earned Jerome Reinhart the record for points in a postseason with 37. And he was not done with the VHL record books yet. In Game 5, Rienhart would account for all of Vancouver’s offense as he scored his record third hat trick and add an assist in a 4-2 win to put the Wolves up 3-2 in the series. He would score two goals and an assist in the final game for his third straight multi-goal game to help Vancouver defeat Moscow for the Continental Cup for the second year in a row. It would be Vancouver’s fourth cup since becoming the Wolves and third in eight seasons.
Jerome Reinhart scored 28 goals (10 more than the previous record) and 52 points (16 points more than the previous record) in three less games then Chershenko and set more records as well. His 13 power play assists were more than Chershenko’s 10 and his 21 power play points were more than the 16 shared by Chershenko and Incognito. Also, his 2.88 points-per-game bested Campbell’s previous mark of 2.73. Now Reinhart had a lot of help and many of his teammates also bettered some of the aforementioned records during the course of the Wolves’ Cup run – but none could better Reinhart.
Vancouver Wolves' GM @Nykonax had this to say about his star's performance: "Jerome specifically has really grown as a player during his time on the Wolves and was an integral piece in our second cup run. The coaching staff was definitely surprised by his offensive output, scoring almost a 3rd of our team's goals this playoffs is certainly impressive, as well as smashing playoff records that have stood for more than 40 seasons. He's a massive part of this team, both on and off the ice, and we are ecstatic to have him locked up for the prime years of his career."
When it was all said and done, Jerome Reinhart won his second consecutive Continental Cup, scored a point in every one of Vancouver’s 18 games and multiple points in 15 of those games on his way to setting no less than six VHL playoff records and treated the VHL faithful to a legendary performance that may never be duplicated. Reinhart received what most record-setters in the VHL playoffs earn – the Daisuke Kanou Trophy as postseason MVP. But he showed the VHL that he was much more than just the Most Valuable.
He was the Alpha Wolf.

@rory is being given a 2 week TPE ban (covering the weeks ending February 6th and 13th) for intentionally tanking their draft stock as a GM which is against league regulations. No TPE will be allowed to be claimed on this time period. @Updater
