Hooperorama reacted to Catter98 in I present Alex Zverina
Alex was born in the Czech Republic in a small town called Znojmo. Alex has been in love with this game since he was very young. Alex started playing hockey at the age of three. Since he was a child, he tried to be a good defender, he is able to release his soul for it, he is also very friendly. Now there is a new challenge in front of him, hoping that someone will choose her in the draft and he will fight for a place in the team. His dream is to get into the national team.

Hooperorama reacted to Victor in Looking at the expansion teams going into their 3rd season
We're coming to the end of the second season of the S73 expansion teams and that means one thing – it's crunch time. See, in their third seasons, each of Moscow, Prague, and D.C. would make their first playoff appearances while Malmo won a Victory Cup and went all the way to the finals. So while that's no indication of future success as evidenced by the varying trajectories of the previous four expansion teams, it does put the pressure on the current cohort a bit – if you can't make the playoffs three seasons in, do you even know what you're doing?
Well let's have a look at what the expansion teams have done so far and whether that has put them in a good position to hit that first milestone.
London United
Expansion Draft: Jay Jones, James Rose, Keith Krestanovich, and effectively Julian Nousiainen (via Guy Lesieur trade)
S73 Draft: Alec Volchenkov, The Terrible Trivium
S74 Draft: Ryan Schwarz, Kasper Kunkkunen, Kevin Malone and a few guys in the system
I think GM Roger McWolf III rightfully won plaudits for his expansion draft performance after securing the first selection there, and it holds up very well in hindsight. Half his forward core comes from that initial event as well as franchise defenceman James Rose. It's been a calm and steady approach since as he has effectively secured his top four forwards in the subsequent drafts and is giving Rose some support at the back. Also quite importantly, Kevin Malone looks to be London's franchise goaltender, which is a position that all of this quarter seem to have sorted out early on (unlike Moscow, D.C. and Prague in fact).
There aren't any huge steals to write home about but also no obvious misses either – it seems everyone McWolf has picked for his team has repaid his trust. The roster is pretty much complete and will be a competitive one soon, but will the United be confident enough to add some veteran options to their young (and cap-friendly) squad this off-season so they can replace Riga as one of the conference's main challengers?
Warsaw Predators
Expansion Draft: Latrell Mitchell (not quite, but they drafted Dayne and Bridges who were traded to Calgary in the Mitchell deal)
S73 Draft: Dakota Lamb, Ajay Krishna, Victor Grachev, Jeremy Lin
S74 Draft: Aloe Dear, Tim Waters, Lexi Glass, Chris Reynolds
One of the reasons London might hesitate to go big in S75 is that the Predators may be better positioned to make the first move in Europe. With a more developed goalie and a core player about to his his prime in Mitchell, Warsaw is ready to reap the benefits of a more aggressive approach in the past couple of drafts, which has involved trading up and into the drafts to secure a more mature prospect pool early on.
Like with the United, it appears to have paid off in the sense that all of Warsaw's picks at the top end are working out, without needing later round steals to bail them out. It's not a complete roster yet, but perhaps it's the last couple of holes on forward and defence that GM Damien Walec will take to the trade and free agency market to address.
Chicago Phoenix
Expansion Draft: Squirrely Dan, Adam Syreck
S73 Draft: Jean-Pierre Camus, Matty Socks
S74 Draft: Christian Mingle, Lee Xin, and a few guys in the system
Chicago has probably been the quietest of the expansion teams, having made no trades in their first season and since then never having traded a pick higher than the 3rd round. The cautious approach is similar to London's and in particular their haul from the past two entry drafts is similar in quality with 3 core players to build around in Camus, Socks, and Mingle. However, the Phoenix had the first real draft dud in S73 27th overall pick S Kuchar and targeting a couple older, S71, players in the expansion draft has resulted in a couple players with a lower upside than their expansion rivals got.
Peculiarly, it looked like Phoenix would set an expansion team record with a playoff appearance in their second season, perhaps owing to a lighter schedule or a weaker conference, but that dream faded late on in S74 and I'm not sure they'll be too keen to go hard this off-season either. Chicago still needs a bit of polishing around the edges, particularly on defence, so I think a steadier approach will be the better option for the time being.
Los Angeles Stars
Expansion Draft: Markus Nygren, Gary Neal and via Sigard Gunnar trade, Lester Green
S73 Draft: Jeffrey Pines, Mikeal Keef, Jiggly Gumballs
S74 Draft: Doug Dimmadome
Finally, we come to what's ended up being the shallowest team across the expansion franchises. There's two key reasons for that. Firstly, LA's expansion draft strategy was to target older players – a S68, S69, and S71 forward specifically and while that brought some individual success – Gunnar's three trophies in S73 are the only ones won by an expansion franchise – it does mean fewer core players for when they're competitive. Secondly, the Gunnar trade did land the pick to draft Green, a very promising young defenceman, but they did give up a few more draft picks to make it work, with picks being a rare commodity for a young franchise.
Coupled with a gamble that didn't work out in drafting goalie Drew Minott in S73, the Stars had to go for Dimmadome in S74, thus leaving only the early start of a core roster for the time being. It's far from catastrophic – finishing near the bottom of the league in S74 will also be a helpful start to getting more top talent in the system – but it does mean that like Chicago, LA probably won't rush into a playoff race just yet.
And there you have it – I'd say the European expansion teams are closer to making a playoff push in S75, especially Warsaw, but ironically there's a lot more teams in the way on that side of the ocean – other than Riga, the remaining 5 playoff contenders from S74 will look to remain in the hunt for the cup. Meanwhile, despite New York being in the midst of a rebuild and Calgary, D.C., and Toronto arguably having question marks as cup contenders, it does't appear that LA and Chicago are in a position to seize the day just yet with perhaps a conference imbalance in favour of Europe in our immediate future.

Watching game tapes and everything to try and improve mental ability on the ice.
2. Are you watching this year's VHL playoffs? If so, who are you cheering for?
I am not. I am preparing to have our team be in this position.
3. We're planning a team paintball tournament, you are a captain, who is your first pick for your team?
Give me Krishna. He can protect me and stop the paintballs!
4. Now that you can relax on training a bit for off-season, what are your go to cheat foods?
Potato Chips yummmmm! So good!
5. We'll soon have a ton of players join us from the draft, what are your ideas for some hazing?
They can carry all my bags and everything. Will be nice for a change!
6. How did you do with VHFL this year? Are you going to have to study harder for next season?
I did not do very well but I don't believe I was last so that is good! Probably not, I will wing it!

9th Annual Unofficial VHL Regular Season Awards – S74
Another exciting regular season has come to a close. That means we can dole out some regular season awards! Welcome everyone to the 9th Annual Unofficial VHL Regular Season Awards honoring S74! Thank you to everyone that reads this. I’m always looking for new award ideas. Please keep the award suggestions coming!
These awards have been created by me. There is no voting process and they are not officially recognized by the VHL Board of Governors. I wrote descriptions for most of these award names in the original award post. Let’s get things underway!
The Pylon Award (worst +/- rating) – Jay Jones @TTtheT
What a difference a year makes. With all the expansion teams, last season was a disaster for this category. Things were much more normalized this season. Our winner, Jay Jones took home the award with a -38, an improvement on his -44 from a season ago and a massive improvement from the winning total of -74 from last season.

The Major2 Award (most major penalties) - Gary Tarantino @Garrett
I feel like every award show will face a crisis at some point. This award show encountered it here. Sure, it sounds like a great idea to make an award for the player who gets the most major penalties. And sure, it might work great for a season or two when there’s a clear-cut winner. But how do you handle a situation when there’s a tie? Of course we’ve encountered ties in many other categories, sometimes there’s a reasonable tiebreaker, other times we give it to co-winners. I struggled with the tie breaker in this category. Should the tie breaker be most penalty minutes because they like penalties or should it be least penalty minutes, meaning a greater % of their penalties were major penalties? I went with the later. Congrats to Gary Tarantino who took home the award over Kristopher McDagg @Viperxhawks19. Tarantino recorded 10 major penalties but only had 74 total penalty minutes. McDagg lost the tie breaker with 118 PIM.

Shortly after creating this category, I thought it was going to be a bust. Basically all the goalies get a couple of penalties each year, but nothing exciting. Hooperorama reacted to dlamb in Dakota Lamb - Rookie Experience
Dakota Lamb Rookie Experience
Every VHL player's journey starts somewhere. For Dakota Lamb, it started when he heard the words...
"with the 10th overall pick in the S73 VHL Entry Draft, the Warsaw Predators select... from the Miami Marauders, DAKOTA LAMB!"
He was happy to be drafted by another expansion team, something he was familiar with due to being drafted into the VHLM by the expansion Miami Marauders . Fast forward through a development year in the VHLM for Lamb, in which he recorded 44 Goals and 92 Points, while also going to the Founder's Cup Finals. Lamb loved his time in Miami, and plans to possibly return there someday post-professional career. But, the stats alone, and also receiving praise from around the VHLM, proved that after that season, he was ready to make the jump to the bigs, and take on the VHL.
Going into the season, the team mostly knew that it would be a learning and growth year for the team. Lamb was ready to bring and train with his teammates to become the best version of themselves, one that can hopefully bring this newly born franchise to VHL glory. After picking up a few key pieces through the S74 VHL Entry Draft such as 1st overall pick Aloe Dear, and second rounders Tim Waters and Lexi Glass, the roster was set and ready to compete. Lamb was set to debut on the 2nd line, playing his natural Centre position, after some questions whether or not he would be on the wing. And oh boy, against the Prague Phantoms, what a debut it was...
(Announcer)
"Lamb brings it into the Phantoms zone, he cuts to the middle, quick shot, HE SCORESSSSSSS!!! DAKOTA. LAMB. IN HIS FIRST VHL GAME, GIVES WARSAW THE LEAD!"
And then...
"Lamb wins the draw in the Phantoms zone back to Waters... Waters cycles it to Lin on the near boards... fights through a check to keep possession... cross crease feed to Lamb, quick shot, he SCORESSSSS!!!! 2 GOAL GAME FOR LAMB!"
But he wasn't done.
"Prague dumps it in to the Predators zone and changes out, Krishna is going to play this! He passes it up to Grachev, 2 on 1! Warsaw caught Prague changing slowly, Grachev passes it off to Lamb, backhand, forehand, GOALLLLLLLLL!!!! DAKOTA LAMB HAS A HAT TRICK IN HIS DEBUT VHL GAME, WHAT A START FOR THIS KID! WARSAW TAKES A 6-2 LEAD IN THE 3RD!"
A hat trick in his debut VHL game. Something you could only dream of, and Lamb had done it. Of course, this was just the beginning of what this kid could bring to a VHL franchise. So far, through 65 games, Lamb has 34 goals and 41 assists, for 75 points, good for the VHL rookie lead. Lamb is a humble guy however, and not much matters to him except one stat - wins. Of course, this has been sort of an expected, albeit disappointing season for Warsaw - wins wise. However, with the recent trades such as acquiring Latrell Mitchell, and the inevitable coming of stud defenceman Muffbeav, Lamb is ready to go, and expects Warsaw to be one of the elite teams in the VHL, sooner than what everyone else may think.

Western Conference Deep Dive: Mexico City Kings
Carrying on a season that I started last season but haven't looked at for some time, I'm going to be doing a deep dive on one of the teams in the Western Conference of the VHLM. Last season I primarily focused on writing about the teams at the top of the standings, but for the sake of variety this time around I'm going to be writing about a team that's a bit more middle of the pack; the Mexico City Kings. When I came into the league last season, the Kings were one of the teams that offered me a spot, and although i ultimately declined and went to join the Las Vegas Aces, I have followed the team and how they've done with some interest. Last season, the Kings lacked an identity and found themselves languishing at the bottom of the standings. This time around, things seemed to have picked up somewhat, and the Kings look to have a bit more substance around them. Let's take a look at the Kings and what it is that has lead them to some improved performances this season.
Through the 55 games they've played so far this season, the Kings have managed to earn a 26-22-7 record. A marked improvement on the 16-51-5 record they posted last season, it's clear to see that the Kings are a much more competitive side this time around. Perhaps the biggest add to the team and the main contributor to their success has been RJ Thatcher. The S75 draftee currently has the most TPE on the team, and although he isn't their leading scorer at this point in time, his position as the second leading scorer on the team as a rookie speaks to the potential that he has. His 72 points in 55 games has been an invaluable contribution, and its likely a big reason why there's been such a notable improvement in the team. The team's leading scorer, Chris Foley has also given an incredibly important contribution, putting up 74 points on the season. The Kings simply didn't have this type of play to rely on last year, and the addition of this level of talent has really changed the fortunes of this franchise.
The Western Conference as a whole this year seems to be a lot more competitive, and although the Kings are currently 5th in the conference, it's not unreasonable to think that the gap between them and 4th place is something that could be closed. The Kings will be hoping this season that they have the ability to make their way into the playoffs, but even if they don't they should still be primed to compete next season, particularly with the addition of some more talent in the next VHLM draft. There's been a definite change in fortunes for the Kings this season, and hopefully they'll be able to continue on the path that they've started this season. They've been incredibly promising, and I'm excited to see what it is they're able to do through the last 17 games of this year's season.
