TacticalHammer reacted to Telkster in The S77 Class, secondary stats
    Intro
Last week, I went over some of the premier players from the S77 Class, we looked and just the most primary stats in goals, assists, and point totals. Today some other players will have a chance to crack the list's today as we go over shots, shots blocked, plus/minus, and hits. Keep in mind these stats are from the first 3 (potential) years of S77 players in the VHL. obviously with this years stats now getting mixed in, some extra math was required for me. I actually enjoyed this tedious process, as I was a little shocked to see some players make certain categories on this list. Without further ado, lets jump into it!

    Shots
    1. Telker- 1361
    2. Idaho- 1101
    3. Atreides- 1032
    4. Deathwalker- 732
    5. A. Reinhart- 706
    HM. R. Reinhart- 698
    Dude- 656
Telker leads from the top racking up tons of shots for Malmo over the years. Idaho claims second place, who is followed not far behind by Atreides. These two offensive Menaces seem to be having great individual battles between the two of them out in Moscow. It'll be cool to see who ends off with the better career. Moving on we go back to Malmo where Deathwalker cracks 4th overall. Asher picked up the pace massively last year for over 400 shots just from one season. Reylynn is the only defender to crack the list which shows why she was the highest selected defender. Dude also cracks the honorable mentions. In his early season's he was seen more as a 2nd tier forward, but he has quickly become a very important piece to London.

    Shots Blocked
    1. R. Reinhart- 517
    2. Fizzlebeef Jr- 420
    3. Chara- 404
    4. Moreau- 388
    5. Hlozek- 245
    HM. Hadrian- 180
    Madison- 164
This is where some new names come into the mix. Reylynn blocks a ton of shots, and is showing us now that she's an elite all-around defender from this class. Fizzlebeef Jr, Chara, and Moreau follow to no ones shock, as all of these were top 10 picks as defenders. Hlozek was seen as an earlier pick at the time, but has back to back 50 some point years with Riga, and will look to breakout more this year. Hadrian started a year later in the VHL just like Hlozek, but has blocked a good amount of shots to boot. Hadrian is on a PPG pace so far this season. Madison is the last lucky contestant for the Wranglers, while having a couple slower season's in Calgary, Madison is off to a much better start this year.

    Hits
    1. Deathwalker- 1009
    2. Idaho- 882
    3. Chara- 520
    4. Moreau- 504
    5. Dude- 502
    HM. Tanky- 348
    Hadrian- 286
Deathwalker doesn't joke around when it comes to hitting, he even has his own hit list. Idaho is probably the out and out #1 power forward in the draft making 2nd overall for hitting, combined with his offense. Chara and Moreau end up close together again as they both have similar player types. Dude makes the list after working a lot more on checking, last year was his breakout hitting year with 258 hits. Tanky has already retired, but makes the list for hits anyway as he was a huge checker. Hadrian ends it off with a nice amount of hits considering he has less overall game time.

    Plus/Minus
    1. Moreau- +47
    2. Fizzlebeef Jr- +25
    3. Deathwalker- +24
    4. Tanky- +23
    5. Telker- +19
    HM. Atreides- +16
    Madison- +15
Moreau tops the list mainly from his Helsinki years where they had a competitive team. Fizzlebeef Jr turned his plus minus around over the years in Calgary to get him to 2nd on the list. Deathwalker has to be plus right? He does only get scored on when he's in the sin bin😋. Tanky might've had similar results to Deathwalker. Telker is in the plus despite being on the ice for lots of goals, lots are also his own. Atreides surprisingly holds a plus rating despite being on Moscow in the recent years who have been hanging around the bottom. Madison finishes off the Media spot with +15 on a really good Wranglers team.

That's it that's all! lots of people to tag now. Hope you all enjoyed!

    Hello All!

As you are likely all aware by now with @Acydburn taking over the VHLE with Vic it has been decided that someone else will jump in as a member of the green team to replace him. Given that the founder’s cup final has finished (congrats Yukon!) it seems a great time to get things changed over in the VHLM leadership.

After an application process with many great candidates it has been decided that @McWolf will be taking over as the newest member of team green and will work alongside @diamond_ace  as the newest VHLM commish. The blue team wishes him all the best in his new endeavour and thanks Acyd for his service!

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CALGARY WRANGLER

Every VHL team in today’s world is truly fantastic. With a batch of dedicated and approachable general managers, as well as a prospering league full of joyous and excitable players, there are no longer any “unlucky destinations” for your player. Every team has their own culture, and soon the VHLE will create an entire new generation of team dynamics in this community. But today, we are not here to talk about the newest teams in this league, we’re here to discuss one of the oldest — the Calgary Wranglers. I have been a part of this team since S75, and it has been such a privilege. Here’s why:

    Engaged, Hard-Working Management
It all starts at the top. @Jubis completely shifted the damaged reputation of the team back on the right track, and then passed on the torch to @Ricer13, who has made many adjustments to improve user engagement. Both have played instrumental roles in what it now means to be a Wrangler, and not only does the team have to thank them for that; The league also has these two to thank for turning this ship around. Jubis was an electric GM with a passion to see the team succeed, and he made numerous bold moves that put Calgary in a contending position just about every season. And we can’t forget his seasonal stats prediction articles. Ricer made upgrades to the locker room that have turned it into somewhat of a VHL utopia, and his team awards at the end of the season are always a fun read as well.

Of course we can’t forget the AGMs here either. When I first arrived, @LatinViking was the AGM, and he was doing a great job as a presence in the locker room and as a strategist alongside Jubis. He unfortunately had to quit the VHL for personal reasons, and if he happens to ever see this, I hope he’s doing well.

The honours were then passed on to me, and I’d like to think I did a pretty good job as AGM. I am currently working with our new hire, @Greg_Di, to help him thrive in his new role. I can already see his eagerness to help and how he is willing to take on any task that is needed from him. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope that my words of (somewhat) wisdom can help you when you fully take over.

A Room Full Of Amazing People
The Wranglers are a family. Whether we’re finding conversation through a skillful graphic or the NHL games that were on that night, our bond as a collective is always growing. Everyone is very accepting to newcomers, and anyone is welcome to come for a chat in the server's general area. With the people that comprise this team, I could not be prouder to call myself a Wrangler.

    Consistent Content About The Team
Like I previously mentioned, Ricer has a seasonal team awards show, which everyone thoroughly enjoys. On top of that, @Jtv123 has continued Jubis’ stats prediction series. A few of us do player graphics here and there, and they’re frequently Calgary players. Also, Greg_Di regularly releases content about his perspective on the team and his career. There is much more that I could shout out, but I think I’ve made my point quite clear. Safe to say, you can almost always find something about the team or even your player.

    To Conclude...
Being a Wrangler is great. That’s about it from me, thanks for reading.

    Jonathan Ori @ROOKIE745
Jonathan Ori is a part of both the VHLM and VHL draft this upcoming offseason. In his first season with The Minnesota Storm he (as the time of writing this) had four goals thirty four assists for thirty eight points. Ori is a player to watch as that's really good for a first year player
    #9
    Miroslav Tsarov @PadStack

Miroslav Tsarov played four games for Houston in season 77 and had one goal before being drafted to 21st in the VHLM draft last offseason. With my cup favourite 21st he so far has 21 goals and 34 assists for 55 points in 69 games. Not only do I think he is a player to watch next season, I think he is a player to watch in the VHLM playoffs as well.
    #8
    Poopy peepants @JardyB10

Poopy peepants (yes that is his real name) had played 4 games with Houston in season 77 and had 1 assist in four games for one point. This season he has 5 goals 36 assists for 41 points in 68 games, This season he plays for miami. He is almost ready to make the jump to the VHL and I think will be a Solid pick up for one of the teams that need a defensive blue line player.
    #7
    Jerome Reinhart @mexicanCow123

Jerome Reinhart is the first of two Reinharts on my list. This season is his VHLM rookie season and so far with yukon he has 39 goals and 43 assists for 82 points in 67 games. Of course he has playoffs upcoming so the question is does he keep this up in playoffs. If he keep playing this strong I might move him up.

    Em Em Flex @oilmandan

Em Em flex is the first goaltender on the list. So far his numbers are not the best with a 0.858 SV% and a goal against average of 4.54. However I see this goalie having a great time next year when Miami is stronger this year was his learning year. With a record of 12 wins 54 loses and 2 Ot loses. Not bad for a rookie goalie at all I'm telling you this kid is going places.

     Jakub Brozik @Wolverine

I know that placing Jakub Brozik so high is weird because he is on a bad team with a great center playing with him. However Jakub has played great and if I would say just as good as Minion which is why I have him so high. With 17 goals and 62 assist for 79 points. He is a member of the hounds and has a lot of skill, he is a big time player to watch.
    #4
    Taylor Mourning @scoop

I have taylor Mourning so high not because he has awesome stats but because he has promise, last season he had no points in two games but would change that this season with 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points. He look really good when he is playing so I put him really high on the list.
    #3
    Baby bob @baby Boomer
Baby bob has played in 69 games this year and has 29 goals and 43 assist this year for 72 points whitch is okay number the real reason I have him so high is he plays great on the ice and goes out their a get shots. He get alot of puck to net per game and get alot of rebounds he has been a huge part of Minion’s and Broziks points(really he this hight becuase I love his name and think he need to be drafted high)
Two left and their both from yukon

    #2
     Papa Emeritus @Beketov

Papa Emeritus played for Saskatchewan in the first year for his career and had 1 win and 1 loses with a 0.915 SV% 1.99 GAA amazing numbers for a rookie goalie but with only 4 games played it was too early to judge. Until this year, this year Papa played for the kingdom know as Yukon where he had 52 wins 8 loses 4 OT loses 0.893 SV 2.87 GAA those are crazy numbers for a goaltender in his first full season. Papa is without the question the best goaltender in the draft.
    And then their was one

    NA Wildcard Round
     //
It’s an exciting matchup between two offensively gifted teams that both struggle defensively, so we should see a lot of goals in this series! The Dragons finished 4th in the VHL in goals for while the Americans finished 9th, however, both teams were in the bottom-5 defensively.

Led by Groovy Dood up front, who had 42 goals, 96 points, and 337 hits, the Dragons are back in the playoffs after a one year hiatus and looking to do some damage, making the playoffs by 2 points ahead of the Los Angeles Stars with a 34-30-8 record. DC’s balanced attack features 10 players who hit the 50-point mark this season - although Dood is the only one who broke 30 goals. Though it was a bit of a down year between the pipes for Stone Wolski, he’s a generally very reliable netminder that should help give DC a chance to improve on their lacklustre defense in the regular season.

The Americans may not have anyone quite as dominant up front as Dood, but they have two dynamic offensive forwards who each finished the year above PPG in Red Lite and Rhynex Entertainment. Entertainment, in particular, is a player that DC will need to be wary of coming off a career-low 76 point campaign. On one hand, that’s still a darn good season but on the other, you know he holds himself to a higher standard and will be motivated this postseason.

New York actually relies heavily on their defense to generate offense - they have just three other players who hit 70 points, and all of them are defensemen - Kosmo Kramarev, Zeedayno Chara, and Latrell Mitchell. With that group, it’s a little surprising the Americans leaked shots so badly in the regular season (allowing 41.3 per game), and they may need to forego some of that offense in favour of defense to keep DC off the board.

    Prediction: DC in 5

    EU Wildcard Round
     //
An intriguing matchup between two teams that have recently been EU contenders, though Helsinki is weaker than they have been the last few seasons while Malmo is a bit of a surprise to make it this far with a rebuilding squad. They held off a late season charge from the Riga Reign to nab the 5th playoff spot on a tiebreaker (35 wins to 32), in what was almost an exact repeat result of last season’s EU playoff race at the wire.

If experience matters come playoff time, Helsinki has a decided edge here. Valtteri Vaakanainen, Ola Vikingstad, Patrik Laine, Zamboni Driver, and trade deadline pickup Erik Killinger have all been around for a while. They are Helsinki’s best players and will need to be against an upstart Malmo team. Vaakanainen matched his career high with 42 goals this season (he’s been remarkably consistent, with 40, 42, 39, and 42 over the last four years). The captain is the undisputed leader both on and off the ice. Ola Vikingstad (39 goals, 83 points) provides complimentary offense while Patrik Laine (29 goals, 68 points) hopes to rebound a bit in the playoffs. This will be the final season for Killinger and Vikingstad, while Vaakanainen and Driver have at most one more.

Malmo is the contrast to Helsinki’s experience, a young team that exceeded expectations and they have breakout contributions from two youngsters: Muffbeav (45 goals, 85 points) and Brendan Telker (43 goals, 90 points) to thank for that. In Telker’s second season in the league, he took a huge step forward and established himself as a force to be reckoned with offensively. Arthur Dayne (31 goals, 86 points) is the veteran of the line and played a key role in setting up those two for success. Malmo’s defense is a bit of a weak spot outside of veteran Randy Marsh (in his final VHL season, Marsh looked as rough and tumble as ever, adding 312 hits and 260 PIM to his 68 point season). Fortunately, Artem Tretiak has been a force in net with a 0.924 SV% this season, helping cover up some of those shortcomings.

It’s a battle of young vs. old in this EU Conference Wildcard series, but the Titans have too much talent and experience in this one. Look for them to be a possible surprise contender in the EU as they have a lot of players on the team that know how to win in the playoffs.

    Prediction: Helsinki in 4

    NA Conference Semifinals 1
     //
The Seattle Bears have really been a flagship franchise for well over a decade now in the VHL, and coming off of a Continental Cup title, they are back with a team that led the league in wins, though falling a point behind Warsaw and Chicago for the best record overall. Seattle ranks third in the VHL in goals (271) and goal differential (+34) and while they are more middle-of-the-pack defensively, they are no slouches there either.

The league knew Isabella Campbell was good but it was a breakout year for her even then, scoring 47 goals and 99 points and setting career highs across the board. Seattle has six players who hit the 80-point mark, so you know this team can score. Campbell’s linemates Timothy Brown (37 goals, 87 points) and Venus Thightrap (45 goals, 86 points). James Rose finished second in the VHL with 72 assists. While Rara Rasputin probably didn’t have the statistical success he wanted this year, he was good enough to post a 40-17-7 record. Seattle will be a team to watch once again in these playoffs.

Calgary had some success this season, but they are still a squad coming into their own. Luke Thornton and Nathan Perry both hit 40+ goals and 80+ points on the season while Andrew Su, a splash pickup from Vancouver in the off-season, put up 82 points this season - but for a player who has scored 447 points over the previous four, that might be a little disappointing. Calgary has depth - eleven 40 point players and that’s not even including the always-improving Nils Tallinder, who finished his rookie year with 22 points but is plenty talented and capable of holding his own at this level. Tyler Walker came over at the trade deadline and added some stability to a young back end.

That Calgary top-four of Walker, Cowboy Prout, Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr., and Tom Eagles will be put to the test in this series. What’s remarkable though is how young they are. The key players on this Calgary team have their best years in front of them, and they aren’t going anywhere. That being said, we expect Seattle to be just a little too strong for them to overcome this time around.

    Prediction: Seattle in 6

    NA Conference Semifinals 2
// <winner of DC Dragons vs. New York Americans>
The Chicago Phoenix have risen to the top of the VHL in a short time, and for the third-straight year they are a top contender. They may be the most balanced team in the league - the second-best offense (285 goals), second-best defense (225 goals against), and best overall goal differential (+61) in the league.

All season long, Chicago’s top forward line of Lee Xin, Robin Winter, and Christian Mingle has been a force to be reckoned with. All three set career-highs across the board this season and all three finished over the 100-point mark. It was a line that clicked from the very beginning and gave opponents fits. Having five-time 80-point scorer Kyl Oferson on your second unit doesn’t hurt, either, though he dropped off a bit this season to 68 points.
Regardless of whether they end up playing against DC or New York, it’s hard to envision them not being the favourites. There aren’t very many teams in the league that have the firepower to slow down this offense. Throw in a defense that features Spencer Elsby, Matty Socks, and L and netminder Jean Pierre Camus, and it’s pretty easy to see why this team tied with Warsaw for the best record in the VHL and why they are among the favourites to win it all.

Prediction: Chicago in 5 (over either team)

    EU Conference Semifinals 1
     //
London and Prague are two teams that finished with very similar records, separated by just a point in the regular season standings, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out over the course of a 7-game series.

One area to watch will be the London defense, which suffocated opponents in the regular season. Usually, that’s important in playoff hockey. London scored the fewest goals of any playoff team this season; fourth-fewest in the VHL overall, but posted the fourth best record in the league thanks to having the league’s best defense. General Zod and Micah Adrienne head up that group as a fantastic shutdown pairing. Offensively, much of the load will be shouldered by Kevin King, who finished just shy of his first 50-goal season this year. One does get the feeling that London was aware of their need to produce more offense, as they brought in Onde Sandstrom from Vancouver during the season, but Sandstrom struggled in London (13 points in 20 games, compared to 84 in 52 before the trade). Something will probably need to give if London is to make a serious run.

You wouldn’t be surprised at who’s leading the charge in Prague if you looked at their roster - it is guys like Thomas Landry II (37 goals, 86 points), Dan Baillie Jr. (30 goals, 74 points), Robert Bouchard (35 goals, 74 points), and Dominic Gobeil (30 goals, 71 points) - they’re all career Phantoms, and Landry is looking to go out on top. Grekkark Gyrfalcon has only been here three seasons, but it feels like he’s been here longer… he’s really established himself as a reliable last line of defense in Prague. Prague’s defensive unit, at least behind Battre Sandstrom, is going to be a question mark but it might only become a problem as the playoffs go on if London can’t get their offense going.

The United are a team that could be scary, and their offense has more talent than the regular season showed. You’d have to give them the edge on paper - but we all know hockey isn’t played on paper. London has to figure out how to score goals, and based on what we’ve seen from both teams so far, Prague has been the better team.

    Prediction: Prague in 6

    EU Conference Semifinals 2
// <winner of Helsinki Titans vs. Malmo Nighthawks>
Warsaw, like Chicago, is simply a stacked, well-built team. They’ve been a VHL contender for many seasons now and this year is no different.

Aloe Dear has built on her outstanding career so far by leading the league with 74 assists and 118 points this season, helping linemate Chris Reynolds put up his first 100-point season while Dakota Lamb had a 34-goal, 96-point season of his own. Chris Hylands led VHL defensemen with 87 points this season (it was his first full season as a defenseman, and clearly he hasn’t lost any of the offense in his game), but also placed 8th in blocked shots with 187. He’s transitioned seamlessly to the position, and he’s got a fantastic partner in Victor Grachev. Tim Waters helps out on the back end too - he’s certainly a less dynamic player than Hylands or Grachev, but he’s elite defensively as well.

Ajay Krishna was, not long ago, one of the best young up and coming goalies in the league. But a couple of seasons have passed without much development on his part to the point where it would be the one area you have to look at as a weakness on this Warsaw team. Looking down the line, it’s one that Chicago doesn’t have, and it might even become a problem for them in this series - especially against a team as battle-tested as Helsinki.
If the Predators end up playing Malmo here, we expect them to just be too much for a young team like the Nighthawks, who are likely a season or two away from their real window as a contender. On the other hand, if it’s Helsinki, this could be a drawn out affair with plenty of upset potential. Nevertheless, we do expect the Predators to advance either way.

Prediction: Warsaw in 7 (vs. Helsinki) / Warsaw in 5 (vs. Malmo)

    The Rest of the Way
We’re predicting conference final matchups of Warsaw vs. Prague and Chicago vs. Seattle, which might be going a little too “according to chalk” but those top three teams are just so well built that it’s hard to bet against them, even if it’s likely that an upset will happen somewhere.

Warsaw and Prague met last season in the conference semifinals, with Warsaw winning the series in 5. Truthfully, we also think Helsinki could be a team to watch make one last push here. They’ve got a lot of veterans, a lot of experience and made a huge pickup when they added Erik Killinger at the trade deadline. If they can make it through Malmo and upset Warsaw, they could go on a run. If the series is indeed a Warsaw / Prague matchup, we’d expect a similar result to last season. Prague pushes it a bit further this time, but Warsaw still comes out ahead.

A Chicago/Seattle series might very well be the crown jewel of the S78 playoffs, if it happens. Chicago looks like the best team in the league on paper and the Bears aren’t far behind, plus they’re, well, the Bears - they always bring it come playoff time. But Chicago will be hungry after a stunning sweep at the hands of Los Angeles in last season’s playoffs, and our prediction here is that they come out ahead in a hard fought 7-game series. Ultimately, if this is the series we do see, we’re picking whoever wins it to win it all.

Going with our predictions so far, we see a Chicago / Warsaw final. These two teams have a lot to work with, both boasting elite offenses and elite defenses. The biggest difference here is between the pipes, where we give a significant edge to JP Camus over Ajay Krishna. That being the case, we go with Chicago in 6 as our final Continental Cup prediction.

TacticalHammer reacted to Telkster in The S77 class, who tops what categories?
    Intro
After nearly 2 full seasons in the VHL, I think its about time we start to compare some players from the S77 draft. I will be going over many stats that will help us compare all the players. I'll go over many things like points, goals, and assists, then even get down to secondary stats like shots, hits, and shots blocked. This will be for regular season games only, with no playoff stats included.  This is not a redraft ranking for every player in the class, or even in the first round. this is meant to throw out all the info you need on these players. Then you can let your mind and opinion decide who was a steal, average pick, bust, etc. I'll list the top 5 players from each category, then give more of a breakdown with small paragraphs for each stat too. Now your probably thinking, "But the players probably haven't played an even number of games!". And you are 100% correct. many players in the draft may only have 1 season under their belt so far, so keep this in mind. I don't expect many one season player's to top many categories, without further ado, lets get started.

    Points
     Telker- 132 pts
    Atreides- 128 pts
    Chara- 116 pts
    Idaho- 109 pts
    R. Reinhart- 105 pts
Telker tops the draft so far in points, which is a decent surprise for being a 5th overall pick. Atreides and Idaho continue to do some nice things in Moscow, but just like the Nighthawks, the Menace probably have higher expectations going into next season. Chara holds 3rd in points, and while many may have seen him as going too high in the draft, he certainly seems to be holding his own. Reylynn should also be happy at number 5, with many good forwards to battle with in this draft class.

    Goals
    Atreides- 66G
    Telker- 63G
    Idaho- 57G
    R. Reinhart- 32G
    Dude- 28G
Atreides gets the nod in this category, as he's quickly became the #1 center in Moscow. The rest of the group isn't very shocking at all, but That Dude makes his first mark in the top 5 with 28 goals, and he's proving to be a great pick so far from the #10 spot in the draft.

    Assists
    Chara- 94A
    Fizzlebeef Jr- 74A
    R. Reinhart- 73A
    Telker- 69A
    Moreau- 65A
The Defenseman destroy in this category, because that’s all Telker is surrounded by. Fizzlebeef Jr and Moreau make their first appearances on the board with many more assists rather then total points and goals. The defense really show the forwards how to pass the puck here.

    Shots
    Telker- 754
    Idaho- 614
    Atreides- 598
    R. Reinhart- 446
    Deathwalker- 368
No real surprises from any of the top 4 players for shots, but Deathwalker gets on the board with 368 shots alongside Telker in Malmo.

    Hits
    Deathwalker- 657
    Idaho- 519
    Moreau- 319
    Chara-309
    Dude- 231
Deathwalker has been going on a hitting tear, and while hitting may not be the most important stat, it gives you a nice idea of who the tougher guys are from this draft class

    Shots Blocked
    R. Reinhart- 331
    Fizzlebeef Jr- 284
    Chara- 277
    Moreau- 244
    Kruulenstien- 167
The big four D-man sit a top the chart to no ones surprise, but Kruulenstien gets on the board with just one season under his belt. He's part of a rebuilding Vancouver team and he's blocked a ton of shots this year.

TacticalHammer reacted to Alex in Is Being a Top Pick in The VHLM Draft a Good Indicator of Potential for Success in The VHL?
Since I just went through my first VHLM Draft as an AGM I’ve been wondering if a player is a top pick (first overall) in the VHLM draft do they typically have success in the VHL once their M career is over. The answer to this question is relatively complicated as there have been several recent players to find a great deal of success in the VHL, and some who have not following their final season in the VHLM. In this article we will try to make a reasonable decision to answer this question looking back on the first overall selections dating back to the S69 VHLM draft where the Saskatoon selected David O’Quinn first overall, and up until the most recent selection of Alex Johnston by the Philadelphia Reapers last offseason.

The Season 69 VHLM first overall pick defenseman David O’Quinn had a very promising season in the VHLM after being drafted putting up 15 goals and a remarkable 99 assists for 114 points in 72 games. O’Quinn was selected by the New York Americans 12th overall in the S69 VHL draft. After spending S69 with Saskatoon, O’Quinn was called up to New York for 1 season before being traded to Vancouver mid-season 71. During the off-season following S71 O’Quinn would be traded again to Davos where he would retire after 3 seasons. O’Quinn had a relatively short VHL career before retiring in which he never put up more than 11 goals and 59 points. O’Quinn retired following S74.

The season 70 VHLM first overall pick has come a long way since his draft season, being selected by the Houston Bulls and scoring an impressive 62 goals, and 62 assists for 124 points in 72 games during S70. Following S70 Killinger would enter the VHL draft and be selected 11th overall by the Toronto Legion Where he would spend the first 4 seasons of his career putting up a career high of 90 points in his final season with the team. Following this Killinger was traded to London where he would continue to produce for the 3 seasons he was there scoring on a pace that was just above a point per game. After spending S77 in London, Killinger was traded back to Toronto where he has continued to produce at an impressive pace.

Joe Proto was selected first overall in the S71 VHLM draft by the Las Vegas Aces. Prior to the S71 draft Proto won a Founder’s cup with Minnesota where he signed as a free agent. During S71 Proto would be very productive for the Aces recording 54 goals and 57 assists for 111 points in 72 games as a winger. Proto was selected 8th overall in the S71 VHL draft by the Vancouver Wolves where he would play for S72 putting up 30 points in their rookie season before being traded to Calgary 12 games into S73. Following S73 Proto was traded yet again to Davos where he would play 35 games and score 12 goals, before being traded yet again, this time to New York. Proto would play for both London and Toronto prior to being released before the start of S77. Proto had a career that is pretty mush the definition of being a journey-man playing for 6 different VHL teams over a 5 season VHL career. Proto is currently unsigned and is a free agent in the VHL.

The Season 72 VHLM first overall pick has had one of the better careers when compared to the other former VHLM first overall picks in this article. Selected first overall in the S72 VHLM draft by Mexico City, Hylands would go onto having a dominant season following his VHLM draft, recording 52 goals, and 55 assists for a total of 107 points. Hylands was also selected 14th overall in the S72 by the Malmo Nighthawks where Hylands would spend his entire career up until  waiving his no trade clause to go to Warsaw where they play today. During Hylands’ time in Malmo they became a household name continuously being well above a point per game and winning a Continental Cup in S75.

Merrick was also drafted in the S73 VHL draft, 5th overall by the Toronto Legion where he would go onto have a solid 2 seasons highlighted by winning the S75 Mike Szatkowski Trophy. 6 games into S76 Merrick was traded to Los Angeles where he would continue to produce at a rate just above a point per game. Early in S78 it appears that Merrick’s production has begun to decrease as for the first time in their career they are producing at a rate below a point per game.

Weiss was also selected 25th overall by Toronto in the S74 VHL draft and would be productive early in his career putting up their career high for goals and assists in their rookie season with 22 goals and 25 assists for 47 points. After spending their first 2 full seasons in Toronto Weiss was traded to Vancouver 23 games into S77. One of three defenseman drafted first overall in the last ten seasons, Prout’s career has taken off in a very different direction than that of S69 selection David O’Quinn. Prout was drafted by San Diego first overall in the S75 draft and proceeded to have a very good S75 with San Diego scoring 22 goals and adding 69 (nice) assists for a total of 91 points in 72 games. Prout was also selected 20th by the New York Americans, during his rookie season Prout proceeded to be a valuable member of New York’s defensive core before being traded near the deadline to Calgary where he remains today. During his stint with New York Prout scored 10 goals and had 37 assists for 47 points in 58 games. Since then Prout has been a leader on the blueline in Calgary and was recently named an alternate captain for the team.

Following that dominant season in the VHLM Atreides was selected first overall in the S77 VHL draft by the Moscow Menace . Since joining Moscow Atreides has become a valuable member of the team, breaking the 30 goal mark in their rookie season and is off to a great start this season, already having 32 points in 25 games.

During the process of writing this article I had the opportunity to discuss what it was like being a top selection in the VHLM draft and transitioning to the VHL with a recent VHLM first overall pick Cowboy Prout, the following is our exchange:

Me: What was your experience like being a first overall selection the VHLM?

Prout: It was a great experience I’ve told this story i don’t know how many times but as a first gen and my tpe at time I thought it wasn’t possible but with me being active and earning, and being social I feel made a difference and I loved the Marlins. Rockstar was great there for me personally and when he took me back as a “off board pick” was really just overall good move by him I’ve thanked him for it. The discord chat was one of my favourite VHL moments. The hype I had it made me feel good not gonna lie and I was damn happy haha.

Me: How has your career gone so far?

Prout: Not up to par like I hoped but I’m still fairly decent I’d say. The production this season has boosted finally, and I’ve seen just better games by myself which is a step in right direction.

Me: During your rookie season in the VHL you were traded, what was that experience like?

Prout: I’m pretty sure most knew I requested my trade. I liked the LR for most part in New York and they still have some of the guys that were there before that I really liked. Esso was good about it and there’s water under the bridge here. Obviously, something you don’t want to do especially first gen and all, but I felt it was best at the time and I’ve had a great chance in Calgary. My first season over was Jubis stepping down. He was great. I respect him a lot here. Then Ricer taking over was one of the best moves. Ricer is one hell of a gm and he’s amazing stand up guy. The team has a bright future in Calgary.

Being a top pick in the VHLM draft is a great way to start your career, and is a really cool experience for the lucky few who get to enjoy it but, as of now the question of ‘Is Being a Top Pick in The VHLM Draft a good Indicator of Potential for Success in the VHL?’ will remain unanswered as yes there has been several players to experience success and potentially make it to the Hall of Fame following being a first overall selection in the VHLM draft, there has also been several players who have not found success, hopped from team to team, or just retired very early. The real answer to this question may come a few seasons down the road when the up and coming group of former VHLM first overall selections of; Cowboy Prout, Paul Atreides, The Loch Ness Monster, and Alex Johnston have played through their VHL careers.

Special thanks to @Prout for answering my interview questions.

TacticalHammer reacted to Prout in WRANGLER TALK - ft the hot dog mess part whatever !
This article is brought to you by Schneiders hot dog inc the official sponsor of the Calgary Wranglers Est season last! That’s right lady’s and gentleman they have stepped up to sponsor this beautiful team. The Schneider’s hot dogs will have some of the best word wide sponsorship deals/ announcements and events as part of this newly formed partnership that was a match made in heaven like a stripper finding her lovely father after those long 25 years! So come on down and watch the only and only big chunk Ricer munch down as many as he can eat on the bench during games as he pigs out like the fat guy you see at the all you can eat buffets half off days! It’s purely a gross sight but amazing entertainment and again this is a proudly sponsored message by the Schneider’s hot dog inc.

As the Wranglers had a up and down week the only thing at this very moment going up is ricers big fat belly from eating hot dogs! This fat son of a bitch has been trying to do his best motivating his team to be better as a team and to play for the lovely fans in attendance while he gives them a better show then the team itself.
With some recent Calgary Wranglers getting better this season and having some great rookies on the rise this team sure looks promising and you wouldn’t believe it but that Perry kid looks to be one of the leagues rising stars with popping up in league leader stats this player has been super promising early on.

Cowboy Prout on the blue line sucks. With Fizzlebeef and Eagles carrying the heavy load and having some great goaltending once again this team sure could be better from the blueline but again Cowboy is a disappointment and Ricer is looking to find even harsher ways of punishment then strapping his player up and shoving hotdogs down his throat till he pukes blood then bag skates him. This looks a lot worse punishment then good ol Eddie Shore would do from back in the day says Don Cherry but he loves the old school mentally! Teammates Eso and Phil The Rock Johnson have also been very solid this season
     and how about SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I will say I love this forward core and what they’ve done so far so keep errrr up ladies and gents! Let’s get errrrr doneeee !!!!

Asky the goalie already has early signs of severe back problems and once again is strapping the team on his back and carrying them his health won’t be good for much longer. Will this mean Advil could step up and sponsor the Wranglers and be associated with this cluster fuck or will they demand this hot dog mess to end before they step in on the endorsements? I guess we’ll find out later this season!

Some positive Wranglers news is Guy Lambert is sitting currently in second on the rookie scoring in the season while Joe Madison sits ninth and will be looking to follow up the rankings with fellow teammates.

Deathwalker is Coming to Town (Hit List Remix)

Hello all you Nighthawk fans! Well, S78 is underway and we're off to a decent 3-2 start. And to celebrate the new season, I have a little surprise for you! During the off-season, I recorded a little ditty that will start playing on Malmo radio stations tomorrow. Please call in and request it on rival city stations when the Nighthawks play in that city. Aye, it's not Christmas, but I'm all about giving gifts (and hits) all year round! Enjoy!

    🎶 You better watch out
    You better not cry
    You better not pout
    I'm telling you why
    Deathwalker is coming to town

    He's made a Hit List,
    He's checking it twice,
He's gonna find you and it won’t be nice
    Deathwalker is coming to town

He sees you when you're skating
Knows when you’re on the ice
Crossing names off his Hit List
Is this big man’s only vice

    Oh, you better watch out!
    You better not hide
You better skate fast, I'm telling you why
    Deathwalker is coming to town

You may have come from Greenland
    Or the Czech Republic
But when he slams you in the boards
It will make your teammates sick

    Oh, you better watch out!
    You better not cower
At 6’7”, 250, he has all the power
    Deathwalker is coming…
To your home rink he is coming…
Let your heart sink when he’s coming…

    For You!  🎶

TacticalHammer reacted to animal74 in Update: Druss Deathwalker's Hit List
When Malmo rookie right winger Druss Deathwalker talked about his now-famous “Hit List” of the nine rival players that were drafted ahead of him in the S77 Entry Draft hence marking his slide out of the Top 10, the reactions were many.

One journalist commented that Deathwalker “...stirred the pot enough to get some people talking already. [He’s} creating rivalries…”.

Another fan commented online, “Can’t wait until later in your career when you have crossed off every person on that list.”

While most reactions were supportive of the “Hit List” - even some of the players on the list - seeing it as tongue-in-cheek and good fun for the league in the name of creating rivalries, a few looked down on it and shunned the notion of a personal vendetta taking league headlines away from the game itself.

One such ballyhooer was one of the Hit List’s targets, Riga Reign prospect Jan Hlozek, who was selected 8th overall. The only player on the Hit List who stayed down in the VHLM for S77 hence delaying Deathwalker’s chance of crossing off his name, Hlozek nevertheless made his disgust known immediately, calling Deathwalker out on social media directly following the interview and then following up in his own later interview.

“I may or may not be forced to take presumptive retaliatory action, using my hockey stick as a weapon, given the challenge thrown down by yourself…” and, “I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in the VHL, because you'll be finished by the time I'm done with you.” He tweeted out shortly after the announcement of the Hit List.

Not one to back down, Deathwalker responded by accepting Hlozek’s challenge and saying that “...it's nothing personal, but a matter of principle.”

Obviously, this did not sit well with the Czech defenseman as made plain during a scathing interview.

“I don't know this guy and now he's saying that he wants to take me out. I've never heard of him, so I don't understand what problem he has with me.” he said during a recent media availability Skype call. “There's a reason why I went before him, because I can play… Maybe he's bitter, maybe he's jealous.” He went on to mock Deathwalker’s rookie season with Malmo, and suggested maybe the power forward wanted to go to Riga instead due to Sweden’s “cold and depressing” weather. He also refused to tone down his comments stating, “I want him to read this. I want him to be mad. I want him to be angry that he was drafted after me…  I proved in the VHLM that I am a better player than him, and I'll do that again when I get to Riga.”

A little while later, Deathwalker posted his own statement in response to Hlozek’s comments:

"Ho! So the little defenseman thinks his words will scare me? That his toothpick of a hockey stick scares me? Ha! I’ll crush him and put him in my haggis! He’s right about one thing - I am bitter and mad - not jealous though. I’ve lived in Scotland - I can handle the cold. He apparently can’t. Maybe he should have played soccer if he likes the warmer climates of Riga. And he “proved” he’s a better player than me? Laddie, hang up your skates and go back to school. Last time I checked, 32-46-78 is greater than 20-43-63. Also, were you in any league Top-10 leaderboards during the season? Except my Hit List? No? That’s what I thought. I was among the leaders in at least five categories in my season so maybe you need to learn what being better means. And I don’t care if my 17 points in the big league doesn’t scare you. My 317 hits (7th in the league) should scare you. Cuz I’m saving some for you next season.

On a lighter note, I did cross off two more names of my List: Zeedayno Chara and (my former Hound teammate) Aurelien Moreau. Just Rolf Fizzlebeef Jr, That Dude, and the whiny one left. Good day!”
