Shaka got a reaction from ROOKIE745 in Toronto Legion Weekly Presser
    Toronto Legion Press Conference
As the VHL season passes the half-way mark of the season and the playoff picture begins to form, the Toronto Legion sit in ninth place with a 24-20-10 record. We caught up with some of the Legion's players to ask them a few questions about the state of the locker room and the team's focus moving forward.
With 5 games remaining in the regular season, the Legion trail by a single point to the New York Americans in a fight to avoid a last place finish in the North American Conference. All but one of those games are against a playoff contender. How do you expect the end of the season to pan out? Zeno Miniti, Erik Killinger and Bjorn Scoringson have shared the lead scoring duties all season, each scoring between 26-28 goals this season, compared to last year when the team was lead primarily by Nethila Dissanayake, who saw a drop to 21. Do you feel the more balanced approach has been a reason the team has improved so much from last season? Rookie Jaxx Hextal has been one of the more promising showings this season, starting 57 games this year and actually improving his save % from his 61-win campaign in the VHLM last year. How has Hextall's performance impacted this team this year? How important is his improvement over the next few seasons to the steady rise everyone in Toronto expects the Legions to make? With the playoffs out of reach, what improvements do you expect the team to make over the off-season? What improvements do you intend to make over the summer in preparation for Season 72? As always, thanks for taking the time today, guys!

For almost a decade, my relationship with the VHL has been a back and forth love affair. It's been no secret that my interest in the sport impacts my interest in participating, at length, in the VHL. While I've maintained a membership in the SBA and EFL over the years, as well as many other start up leagues that are no longer with us today, I've never managed to stick with y player in the VHL. That makes my opinion on the VHL, it's recruitment and it's retention, a unique one. I very well may be the only member in the VHL today, or ever, with the experience I have had regarding the Victory Hockey League. So, in the spirit of Theme Week, I'm going to bypass my weekly Welfare post and explain why I continue to come back to the VHL.

For me, the VHL stands for one thing more than anything else. Community. I think a lot of people have, and will, say that Longevity is the first thing they think of when they think of the VHL. While I believe that to be obviously true, I don't believe any sim league stands the test of time and rests it's name on Longevity without the power of a strong and dedicated community. In the decade that I have been engaged in sim leagues, I never never quite seen a sim league take as many lumps, get back up and keep pushing forward than the VHL has. From it's humble beginnings, fighting for memberships with the SHL and every start up league you can think of, to it's server hack and loss of a mass number of members, to bouts of inactivity that other leagues may have folded through, the VHL has fought it's way to 71 seasons and counting and a lot of that is due to it's membership and leadership.

Now, with an ugly disagreement between leadership at the VHL and the SBA lingering over the past year, the VHL encounters yet another bump in the road. Does anyone expect that this loss of affiliation spell the eventual decline of the league? Hardly. It's because those who have been here longest know that nothing has gotten in the way of the VHL reaching what we all know it will one day reach. The historic 100th season.

In addition to my understanding that this community is a strong one, with quality leadership, I can't write about my experience and constant interest to partake in the VHL without mentioning a handful of members who I will forever member as staples of both here and several leagues I have been a part of. Guys like Jardy, Street, Bushito, Diamond_Ace, CowboyinAmerica, STZ and several others I could earn 6 TPE for just naming in a row. One, however, had stood above the rest. He helped me create the framework for what has become the SBA. He helped me create an unheard of project, at the time, in the SSN. He's taken over the leadership role over the VHL in the time that I have mostly been away. Beketov.

Beketov and I go way back and it's my hope that we'll go way forward, if that's a thing, for years to come. It was Beketov who first introduced me to the VHL and it was Beketov who relentlessly tagged me in an SBDL Discord server to return again. It's our conversations that has led me to take the challenge of assistant GMing, and hopefully eventually GMing, and it's because of him I get to write this Point Task and add them to yet another attempt in a VHL Player.

I can't guarantee that I will make it to the VHL with Cal Conway, or my next player. I can't guarantee that something won't come up in my real life and I'll vanish from the forum as quickly as I arrive every 2 years. What I can guarantee, however, is that the VHL will be here all the same. And the stable of guys I've grown to have, at the very least, internet friendships with will be here to catch up with and shoot the shit with. It's them, as much as anything, that get me excited to return to the VHL and engage the community. And it's them that I believe is ode a debt of gratitude for 71 seasons of success, and many more seasons to come.

I wrote this off the top of my head and I just knew there was someone I was going to miss. You may be the VHL member I remember the most, as you have been involved in the other leagues with me as much as anyone on that list(maybe Bushito). Had I thought of it another 30 seconds, I'd have come up you. Shit, I feel bad ?

I was discussing with @solas earlier this week, I think I agree - I'm more impressed not with the longevity of the VHL but the consistency of the member base (until more recently when we've just got more than ever before). Anecdotally, I linked a trade thread from S38 (June 2014) in a different conversation also earlier this week and of the 15 members who posted there nearly six (!) years ago, 10 have also posted in the past month.

Anyway, I don't know you personally because I am the polar opposite (no interests in American sports outside hockey), but you're a name I know that I always hope sticks around.

Why I Keep Returning To The VHL

Beketov.

    My Journey So Far
It all started back in early August last year, when I was actually playing EHM with a discord group. A couple of the guys told me to check out this league called the VHL. As soon as I joined I was invited onto a couple of VHLM teams. I was welcomed immediately by everyone on my first team, the Mississauga Hounds!  Even though our team was in the doghouse, we had a lot of fun in the discord. At the end of the season, I was shocked to see that I was drafted in the 3rd round by the Moscow Menace, I then ended up in Saskatoon the day after, due to the VHLM Dispersal draft for one more season. I was a bit sad to leave Mississauga, but looked forward to the new adventure. after 35 games or so and Saskatoon were in the doghouse too, and after positive talks with the gm, worked out a deal to get a good package for me that would help them so much more in the future. after I was traded to the Houston Bulls, We had a rocket sprint to the finish and we ended up winning the founders cup! Maybe some luck was involved with my first ever player winning a VHLM cup, but that was just the start.

It seemed like the off-season flew by fast, and I quickly saw my first VHL game just a year after being drafted to Moscow. My first season was well, kind of a typical "I was drafted in round 3 so it was expected" kind of season. I finished my rookie season with 12 points in 72 games, but the playoffs were probably the biggest wake-up call for me. The 11 playoff games that followed, I didn't get a single point, finished a -1, and had a measly 3 shots total, I repeat TOTAL, in 11 playoff games. It was a big low, maybe not so much for our team as a whole, but me individually. Now my sophomore season is where things get really interesting. I made a pretty small offensive stat boost through the 72 games with 17 points this time. but then the playoffs came, and magic happened. Moscow pushed their way through to win the  I managed to be a producer instead of a brick on the ice and put up 7 points in 15 games. It's not 1st line numbers not even close, but I was happy with the individual progression I was having. This season is where I have really taken it to the next level production-wise, but it could be hard to maintain if this is a super lucky season based on the team and line around me. In what is the current season, I have 42 points in 58 games, which is high despite having the 2nd least amount of TPE in the forward group. This season has been going well so far, but our team is gonna have to battle hard to defend the cup again this year.
        Why You Should Join
At first it can seem overwhelming, but we will never stop answering anyone's questions! One of the great things about the VHL is how little of time you need to spend online. All you need is 10-15 minutes on average a day to build a great player! I was really excited about how stretched out the experience is. With your player lasting over a year, it gives you plenty of time to track the growth of your player. Sims are scheduled to 2 games a day, making the season go quick while giving you time to check how your player did in the last couple of games. It gives me so much satisfaction to see my player grow and leave a legacy for the future players that I will create. The VHL is ultimately determined by how much TPE you can get, and how many players you can re create. It is a long but very exciting journey that can leave you thinking about what stats you should upgrade as you fall asleep at night. TPE is everything in the VHL, the more you get the better. The best part is that you can earn a lot of TPE for the little time that it takes to earn it. You have lots of fun completing all the steps to earn TPE through things like trivia, press conferences, graphics, articles, and so much more. TPE alone takes maybe 30 mins or less a week besides if you decide to write media spots (longer yes but more TPE in turn).

The community here is a very welcoming and friendly group. We like to joke a lot, and take small jabs at rival teams who just seem to always meet you eventually come the playoffs. It all comes with the fun. Right now there are currently 12 VHL teams (the big league) and 11 teams in the VHLM (I like to think of this as a major junior league). I've been in a few online and offline hockey simulation leagues in the past, and nothing has come close to what this league's addicting level is for me at least. I started playing 6 months ago and I haven't skipped a beat. Growing my player has been a real blast, as I have created a 2 way center, who's especially good at passing. I can't wait to see how my next players turn out down the road. In the future, I like to dream that the VHL gets to 20 teams down the road, It would make for more playoff drama, as well as even more rivalries, but to achieve this, it all starts with you. If you have ever played NHL gm mode, EHM, Fifa, Madden, NBA, anything that has a simulation based engine. Then the VHL is certainly worth a good try. So while lots of us are cooped up inside, and may be getting a bit bored, the VHL will bring the game and community to you all in one wave. I hope to see lots more new faces in the future to come.

Hello VHL, and welcome to the Season 71 edition of Deep Rewind. In this segment, we'll explore the vast history of the Victory Hockey League, as a league such as this doesn't make it more than 70 seasons without having good stories to tell. Whether it's some of the greatest achievements of the league's legendary players, the marks left by top teams, or the outright bizarre, the history of the VHL has a story for everyone. Through Deep Rewind, these stories will be told.

Before we begin, let's check out what's going on with the VSN this week! You can check out recaps of the past week for both the VHL and VHLM, listen to Berocka's ideas on league improvements, get a crash course on VHL Hall of Famer Benoit Devereux, and see the next crop of the VHL in the World Junior Championship!

Under 250: the VHLM Review | VSN Weekly Review | VSN Radio | The Talents Behind the Trophies | WJC Coverage

This week's edition of Deep Rewind is going to be a little different than usual. The VHL received some bad news yesterday when @gorlab shared that on April 13th, former VHL member Dave Theusch, username @701, had passed away. Additionally known as Scott Kibbie or Korey Stringer, he had a storied past in other sim leagues as well, including the MSFL and SBA. Dave was an active part of the graphics community, both as an artist and as a member of the grading team for graphics. He proudly repped his hometown of Minot, North Dakota (701 is the area code for Minot), and was instrumental in bringing a VHLM team back to the area. Dave did have his moments of notoriety, particularly premature retirements, but his at-times combative nature did make him part of the VHL's lore as a villain at times in the eyes of some. But Dave did make our community better through his involvement, one of them in a way that just so happens to tie into my recent theme of VHLM goaltenders. What better way, then, to pay respect to our fallen friend than to remember him by telling one of his stories? Particularly one as memorable and bizarre as the career of AK47.

AK47's career began simply enough as a goaltender in the VHLM, backing up on the Season 47 Bratislava Watchmen, the Founder's Cup Champions, although he did not play in the Watchmen's playoff run. Eligible for the Season 48 VHLM Dispersal Draft, he was drafted by Jardy Bunclewirth and the Ottawa Lynx, facing the unenviable task of replacing back-to-back Benoit Devereux Trophy winner Atticus von Braxton IV. After being defeated by Bratislava in the Season 47 Founder's Cup Finals, the Lynx were eager to avenge their loss and bring home the Cup.

    A @701 original depicting AK47's time as a goalie.

While the Season 48 VHLM Index sadly appears to be lost, we know that AK47 was a force for the Lynx. Frequently called the "Shutout God," by Jardy, the Lynx fought their way back to the Founder's Cup in a rematch with the Watchmen. A Game One shutout by AK47 ignited sparks between the teams, further fueled by another big performance by AK47 that propelled the Lynx to a 2-0 series lead. However, his pride had provided Bratislava with plenty of bulletin board material, and they roared back to win the next four games and repeat as Founder's Cup Champions, the first VHLM team to repeat as champions twice. However, AK47 was awarded the Skylar Rift Trophy as the Playoff MVP for his 6-4-1 record, 2.68 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.

The career of AK47, however, took a bizarre turn after being drafted by the Stockholm Vikings in the second round of the Season 49 VHL Entry Draft. He never played for the Vikings, being acquired by the Seattle Bears in a trade the same season. He made his debut in Season 50 with the Bears, but he was no longer a goalie, for the previous season he had switched to right-wing. After being on the receiving end of a goalie sack by Edwin Encarnacion during the World Cup, AK47 never again suited up at goalie. There was no previous precedent for this, which led to the formal creation of the rules that, with the exception of some specific conditions, prevent players and goalies from switching to the other position. The Season 49 VHLM Index is also lost to history, and with it, AK47's first results at forward.

AK47's build as a power forward perfectly matched Dave's intensity.

Dave's fiery temperament carried over perfectly to AK47's forward build, as he recorded 258 hits as a rookie in Season 50. With 26 goals and 47 points, it foreshadowed what was to come later in his career. After his sophomore campaign resulted in 25 goals with over 300 hits, Season 52 was when AK47 really began to take off. He hit the 40 goal mark for the first time in his career, tacking on 38 assists to finish with 78 points. With nearly 300 hits, AK47 was emerging as one of the VHL's top two-way forwards. No one, however, was prepared for what would happen next.

Before Season 53, AK47 was traded to the Cologne Express for a Season 54 third-round pick. It wound up being quite the steal for Cologne General Manager Greg Harbinson, as AK47 went on to produce one of the VHL's most unlikely, yet legendary seasons. The former goalie went on to score an absolutely ludicrous 73 goals, adding 70 assists for an absurd 143 points. According to the Portal, he took an insane 872 shots on net, which is backed up by the Index. He also racked up a career-high 358 hits, while serving only 109 penalty minutes. AK47's 73 goals led the league, earning him the Kevin Brooks Trophy, and his dominant season also won him the Scott Boulet Trophy as the league's top two-way forward. Although the Express fell to the Helsinki Titans in a thrilling seven-game series in the first round of the playoffs, it was in no way due to AK47. In the seven games, he added eight more goals, along with nine assists for 17 points. He added 29 hits, finishing his season at the same dynamic level he had performed at all season.

AK47 carved out a unique career that, fittingly, will never be duplicated.

However, he never recaptured the same magic, being traded to the Quebec City Meute following the season. In his two seasons in Quebec City, AK47 scored just 84 points and only recorded 107 hits after a career of physical play. Acquired by the Toronto Legion in Season 56, AK47 fittingly had a proper send-off in which he resembled the player he had always been: 36 goals and 35 assists for 71 points and 91 hits. In his final playoff appearances, he tacked on two last goals to close out his career.

Filled with unique achievements along with highs and lows, AK47 had the kind of career that only someone with Dave's passion could have created. To my understanding, he is the only player that has won an award with a goalie and an award with a skater with the same player, and rule changes have ensured it won't happen again. It is fitting that he found a way to leave his mark on the VHL in the way that will never be duplicated, just as he never will be. It is never an enjoyable time to grieve the loss of one of our own, but I hope this trip down memory lane with one of Dave's most memorable players and some of his extraordinary accomplishments will help keep his memory alive. For as long as we remember the VHL's history, we will also never forget those who played a part in the story, and hopefully, this article will make sure that Dave lives on forever through our community's history. Thank you, Dave, you will be missed.

    A Testimony to the VHL

I have been an active member of the Victory Hockey League since Season 17 (I believe this falls somewhere around 2009-2010.  I had previously been a mainstay in Football Player Sim League’s that influenced the path for one’s like the Elite Football League.  These were league’s like the International Sim League, Madden Madness, Madden Football Association and the VHL-affiliated Victory Football League.  It has been about eighteen years since I joined these leagues, so I feel I have a pretty good of what makes a good sim league and what kills them.

The Victory Hockey League is a good league.  It has had its ups and downs but it is still the most fun I’ve had in a sim league in my life.  This includes league’s I have run (into the ground), and one’s that I spent a number of great years in. The downs of this league saw a lack of recruitment, originality and some poor choices from the top, leading to some pretty poor activity spells.  However, the league is as popular as it has ever been and is going through its best iteration of itself. This is exactly why you should join, whether you have been here before or not. If you aren’t sold on that, let me list a few of the specific reasons why this league is at the top of the pile right now.

First, the VHL Portal is the heart of this league right now.  It is the single biggest reason I ever came back and I think it’s quality is what separates us from the pack.  I see the SBA and EFL ones as good ideas but nowhere near as exquisite or simplistic as the VHL’s. Incorporating things like Practice Facility, Yearly Award Predictions and Player Store into the Portal has made it a one stop shop for all of your needs.  I remember when we didn’t use the Portal as anything but a place to showcase certain media spots but now it is the thing that we can show-off to everyone whether they are new or they just haven’t been here in a while.

Second, the league is at twelve teams and growing.  Spoiler coming, we aren’t done expanding. The reality is that with our current growth rate, we will have to expand once again within the next five seasons.  This would mean likely two more teams with the potential of four new teams over the next decade. It was only about fifteen seasons ago when we had to contract Cologne and Stockholm due to the lowest stretch of activity we have ever seen, but this blue team, Board of Governors and the Recruitment Staff have willed this league back to a place I’ve never seen it.

Third and finally, you should join because we are a league that despite what some say, is very welcoming and helpful.  From our VHLM GM’s and Commissioners to our Discord Staff to our Administrators and Board of Governors. This is the one league that never turned into a true shit show despite certain members pushing the buttons over the years.

This is the time to join the Victory Hockey League, so join us and we can show you the ropes in how to succeed in the internet’s best player sim league.

Just wanted to showcase some of 701's work, for those who weren't around for his time being active here / on other leagues.

Really underrated graphics guy and he taught me a lot and helped me progress as far as I have from scratch. I'll never forget when he taught me Filter > Distort > Ripple.... The rest is history. Son was nice with it, without a doubt.

Damn. That's so sad. I had quite a handful of interactions a with 701, across a few leagues, but can only consider him an acquaintance. I'm sad to hear of any passing, but especially of someone so young and connected to the community.

My prayers go out to his family, friends and any of you who knew him closely.

    1. As the GM, this season -- so far -- has been beyond expectations. We agreed that .500 hockey was our ultimate goal we wanted to reach by the end of the season, we assumed that we'd be fighting for it right down to the final game.

    2. With the trade deadline having just passed, and Toronto's defensive depth lagging well behind other VHL teams, I don't think there is a whole lot we can do to improve. As we earn TPE and apply that into TPA, we'll continue to grow more competitive as the season ends though, and fine tuning the strategies we use could yield some slight improvements to our play as well.

    3. I can't speak for anyone else, but I wouldn't say it's impacting the locker room. It's the what if of those overtime and shootout losses that make it kinda exciting to imagine how the Legion will perform next season. If we had won three or four of those shootout losses, we'd be much closer to that final playoff position.

    4. *Cough* Yes, how will people describe me.

    5. *Intently staring at responses.*

    6. McDagg has been doing a great job, honestly, but Killinger's performance has been underwhelming. As a rookie I've been generating plenty of shots -- thus scoring opportunities -- but I find it frustrating that I'm in seventh place in shots on goal, yet my shooting percentage is far behind the 9.5% - 11% average of 21 other goal scoring leaders. If I had a higher shot percentage, I'd be around 27 goals and maybe we win a few more games in OT that went into the SO and we lost. I feel like that's on me.

I think this may come to a surprise to many, as I've long joked about my activity in the VHL, but I am more excited about this next stage in my overall sim league experience than any I can remember. While I may have never been drawn to go all-in with a VHL player, I have extensive experience general managing in sim leagues and I'm ecstatic at the opportunity to pour myself into this challenge. Thank you @Peace for giving me that opportunity!

If you're going full Shaka this time, I think this is the best move Peace could have made. Lot of good apps out there (Kachur in particular has been applying like mad and hopefully he gets something) but you can't go wrong with the guy who has created leagues out of nothing before.
