Matmenzinger reacted to McWolf in The VFF Report III: Randy Marsh Takes a Vacation
Randy Marsh's reign of terror started with a bang. After becoming the first ever VFF champion in the fourth game of the season, he defended his title not more than 10 games later. Then, either potential opponents started being scared of him or maybe his retirement announcement brought him pity, but he barely even fought for a while. He ended up successfully defending his title two more times, drawing against both Wolf Weiss and Isabella Campbell, essentially prolonging his reign as the only VFF titleholder by an additional 20 games. But that's all he had left and, per the VFF Rulebook, his title was eventually vacated after his 20th game without participating in a single fight. VHL fighters paid their respects to the first of hopefully many, by agreeing to not fight for a couple of days, but the hommage had to end at some point, and it was Jim Bob who broke the minute of silence. After a tumultuous fist fight against Toronto Legion's Lester Green, Bob came on top and officially received became the 2nd VFF Champion about 15 games before the end of Season 78 and, incidentally, his career.

I got over halfway through writing this article in a cheesy third person way before thinking to myself, f*** it. Telker deserves to go out in first person. Once joining the league, I never thought I would get this far. I guess in the back of my head, I always saw it like a video game. Play it a couple months, then eventually it gets old. Boy was I wrong. I would like to thank @Victorfor believing me, and seeing my potential in what was a late draft pick when the league had just 12 teams. I would also like to congratulate @Mr_Hatter For the incredible career he had as the #1 goaler in Moscow. Me and Bernard got our cup in the past, so there’s nothing else we can say other then we left it all out on the ice! While there’s many great memories I’ve had over the past year or more (irl) with the Menace, it’s impossible to list every player I’ve crossed paths with. One day maybe I’ll go nuts on a media spot. Let me at least say thank you to everyone of the people I’m about to tag for making Moscow such an incredible journey. To everyone I’m about to miss now. Thank you for making this the best hockey career I’ve ever had😁

Matmenzinger reacted to Victor in Looking at Moscow's many draft steals
In an effort to prepare the general VHL populace for the inevitable, I would just like to go on record and say that I won't be Moscow's GM forever. I was not far off from calling it quits following our back-to-back trips to the finals in S70 and S71 which marked the end of our first competitive cycle, but a big activity boost from the S72 draft convinced me to aim for my initial stated goal of staying in the GM role for 10 seasons. That mark has now passed – the Menace are now in our 11th season – but as we are firmly in cup contending status I am persevering for now. However, the end is nigh, and with that comes an opportunity for some reminiscing.

It's been a whirlwind of a GM tenure, with some disappointments but a lot more pleasant surprises and great achievements. Perhaps one facet that has surprised me the most is my sudden ability to unearth gems in the later rounds of the VHL draft. It's part of the evolution of the league's recruitment and unprecedented rise in draft depth, but it nonetheless feels like Moscow has hit gold late on in the drafts more frequently than the average VHL team. That is quite a turnaround from my previous GM run in late 30s Davos where I developed a Devise-like propensity for trading all my draft picks, albeit more for 1- or 2-year-old prospects than veterans in a bid to accelerate the rebuild. It worked, but by our second cup in S38, the Dynamo had 1 homegrown player – S35 1st overall pick Lennox Moher plus my own guy (undrafted under old GM player rules), Matt Bentley. By contrast, the S70 Menace squad had 8 players drafted by me, as well as expansion draftee Dan Baillie.

So, without further ado, let's dive into some of the draft steals who, along with the big names of the Menace's young history, have made this possible.

    S66
    Mat Tocco @Matmenzinger
    Dean Clarke @Kyle

A lot of my early picks in my Moscow tenure were duds. In S65 I picked Mitch Matthews and Justin Cole with our two picks and they achieved nothing. I had also traded a 1st rounder for Mark Gebauer, whose early promise quickly fizzled out. One season in and things were not looking rosy at all, to the extent that trading my 1st overall pick for two 1st rounders was the most sensible thing to do to get some depth in the system. One of those – Dimitri Volosenkov – didn't work out either, although Jet Jaguar did in a big way. Owen May however, picked 11th overall to replace Cole as the franchise goalie, was another who flamed out early on in his career. The ratio of busts to steals was not in my favour at all.

Enter the outrageous depth of the S66 draft, until S75 quite comfortably the deepest draft in VHL history, standing at 80 players selected. I won't pretend I hit a home run on all of our picks (Edgar Tannahill, Emil Passerelli, Devin Gabella anyone?), but the two I did made an unquantifiable contirbution to Moscow's future success. I knew very little about Mat Tocco at the time of picking him at start of the 4th round, but I liked the upside of a quiet guy going about his business and picking up TPE very efficiently. He'd retire with 1,000 TPE and already by his 3rd season I was so keen that he wouldn't jump ship to Prague at some point that I signed him to a lifetime contract. Dean Clarke on the other hand was a punt on Kyle, a guy who joined the VHL pretty much the same time as me some 11 years ago, but who hadn't made a good player in about half that time. He would go on to spend his whole career in Moscow, becoming team captain in S73, and providing the assist for Smitty's overtime cup winner in S70.

Tocco and Clarke sit 5th and 6th in Moscow's all-time scorers, both in the regular season and playoffs, and were very cap-friendly and key pieces of our best seasons – Tocco the 2nd line sniper who got an All-VHL Second Team nod in S70 and Clarke the right-hand man to Smitty on the top defensive pairing. To say they were crucial to Moscow's success would probably be an understatement.

    S68
    Nate Telker @Telkster
Killy Foilen @Aye my name jeff

Other than Jaguar and the two studs above, the first 3 Moscow drafts didn't provide much to the future cup-winning roster. Then in S68, I struck gold in a big way, on a draft day in which I made a whopping 4 trades which have effectively come down to trading Luciano Valentino for Raymond Bernard, Will Clarke, Oskar Lagesson, Nate Telker, and Killy Foilen. Not a half bad haul if you ask me.

Only 5 S68 draftees have won the Continental Cup – the Menace drafted 3 of them. While Bernard was a slam dunk franchise goaltender pick at the third time of asking (with an assist from Davos picking Samuel Ross one pick ahead of him), the two forwards picked in the 3rd round were far from guarantees. Telker was almost a carbon copy of the Tocco pick – a late joiner whose trajectory was better than many players' picked ahead of him but who slipped on account of a low TPE total (127 on draft day, lower than 13 players drafted later). However, I gambled by letting DC have a chance on Telker with the pick before, all because the pick before that was Foilen, a guy generate a lot of activity in the draft chat.

In their own ways, both proved indispensable in the Menace's future. Telker was a sophomore and Foilen a rookie in S70, splitting time as the third wheel in the Randoms-Jaguar bromance, but that forward depth proved essential in our march to the cup. Foilen sadly never quite broke out following early retirement, but I'm sure he would have had I not traded him in S72. Telker on the other hand has been a loyal servant for his whole career, now captain for 2 seasons, and another who hit 1,000 TPE, playing out his last couple of seasons as very much a leader and not a depth piece.

    S69
    Oskar Lagesson @fever95

In a way, S69 was a continuation of the S68 draft flurry, as both our picks of note – Clarke and Lagesson – were acquired then. It also wasn't nearly as deep a draft as the previous few, with the quality dying out after the 2nd round, and while Clarke may have won 3 cups with 3 teams in his first 3 seasons, I'm not sure he really qualifies as a steal retiring with 401 TPE as a 13th overall pick.

Lagesson on the other hand was drafted just about late enough to make the cut. Splitting time with Clarke (Will, not Dean) as the depth defencemen in S70, he has since become the new Clarke (Dean, not Will) as the steady, reliable presence on defence, an essential piece of the modern cup contender. Fittingly, like Clarke (of the Dean variety), Lagesson was the return of a member with previous great players, but some 20-30 seasons removed from his prime. I'm pleased that Moscow has proven a place for comebacks of two fine members who I believe will be sticking around for a while this time around.

    S72
    Cole Newhook @GrittyIsKing09
    Pietro Angellini @okifenoki

The next two drafts were low on both quality and quantity for Moscow, as we pushed on full speed ahead for that maiden championship. The prospect pool was drying up and I was relatively certain a full scale rebuild was on the horizon. Instead, the S72 draft (the first one I was present for since S68) went so well that the rebuild became a retool and we were back in cup contender status by S74. The big names in the S72 draft were Alex Letang and Lucas Brandt, who remain key pieces today, while Vin Calia was also acquired just before the draft to former the new young core. What really made the draft for Moscow and propelled us to the league's best prospect pool by the following season was the picks from the 3rd round onwards.

Cole Newhook was straight from the Telker/Tocco playbook, the classic case of late joiner who was more keen to earn more than just the bare minimum welfare. The rise from 79 TPE on draft day to 411 today is a clear success story and Newhook is also the heartbeat of Moscow's forum presence, in the locker room and just around the league. Pietro Angellini I can barely take any credit for, as there were two players who I expected to fall to the penultimate pick of the draft, of whom I knew one would go to Prague with the pick before. Prague therefore dictated which one of Ernie King and Angellini we got and boy am I happy they gave us Angellini. From 47th overall, he is now 20th overall in TPE among S72 draftees and still rising, while become a key component of our forward core. Newhook and Angellini are clearly essential to our continuing playoff streak (now aiming for 7 straight seasons).

    S73-present
Since S72, I have again not been able to make it to a few drafts and have delegated that responsbility to a combination of Spartan and Hatter (mainly the latter), the unofficial Moscow brain trust. Although I have been involved in initial scouting, VHL drafts are highly unpredictable, especially in the later rounds, as my own experiences in S66, S68, and S72 proved. Therefore, some of our finest picks in Fat Palloon (S73), Breeze Ladrian (S74), and the host of late S75 selections have actually had little input from me, which is appropriate I think in this passing-of-the-torch phase of my GM tenure. Here's hoping that these recent selections live up to the now-established tradition of Moscow draft steals.

    1. With the exit of many of our star players, how do you think we will perform next season?
I'm one of the players leaving the team but hopefully you guys can still succeed, and who knows, with the VHLM draft coming up I may rejoin the team.

    2. How have you been enjoying the off-season? Did you return home or go on vacation?
I returned home, playing this season in the vhlm was my first time being that far from home and I was definitely feeling homesick.

    3. What are your goals for next season?
Honestly I'm expecting to be among the best in the league at this point.

    4. Would you rather be an elite passer or elite scorer?
Elite scorer, but points are points.

    5. Are you interested in any other sim leagues?
I was active in the EFL for a while but I just don't have the time to actively engage with more than one league.

    7. How was your season as a member of the Ottawa Lynx?
I wasn't here long and I was added to shore up our depth for a cup run, with us not winning the cup it was a bit of a letdown honestly.

Alright, so I'm not going to lie... this might be a self-damning media spot highlighting my inability to draft or -- for what I believe anyway -- just how unlucky I've gotten with some of the picks I've made since taking over for Toronto at the end of Saskatoon's S69 dominance. I'll be breaking these picks down from the first one I ever made as a VHL GM right to the most recent draft pick, which will almost certainly be a 'too early to tell' recap nearly everyone uses in most big sport leagues like the NHL, NBA and what not. Anyway, let's get onto the breakdown, shall we?

    SEASON 70:

    10th Overall:
    RW - Justin Graves @JDGraves
    Inactive

My first ever draft pick was -- at the time -- an exceptional pick, but obviously the dangerous 'first gen' risk is now brightly displayed as Graves went completely inactive shortly after he was drafted. Apparently, he got extremely busy in real life, and that's not something I can complain about. He moved into a new house with his wife, and had a kid from the short discussions we had, but disappeared after that. I hope he is okay, I really do mean that. I hope he is healthy, his wife and child are healthy, and he's doing alright in life.

It's unfortunate Graves went inactive, as he was a capped earner who'd only missed a few capped TPE tasks. He would have been a solid piece on Toronto's roster, complimenting Magnum and then a forward Killinger before he switched to defense to assist with the build effort of Toronto. Sadly, this pick is entirely a bust as he never reached the ceiling I had hoped from him when I made the pick. Ultimately though, comparing who was drafted after him in the first round, this turned out to be the story with multiple GMs and their own individual picks.

    22nd Overall:
    D - Aleksandra Olsen @GlowyGoat
    Retired

GlowyGoat retired Olsen during the season seventy campaign at just 130 TPE, but after looking into the history of this player agency -- admittedly half arsed -- it's not a huge surprise the perennial VHLM preference has nipped a few GMs in the past. Chalk this one up to a rookie mistake, I suppose, but when I made the pick I was adamant he'd go further because I thought I was drafting a friend alongside him in Cheezy. There's really not much more to say about this selection other than, I suppose, 'what could have been'.

I anticipate Olsen -- had Glowy brought him above the 200 TPA cutoff mark at the time -- would have left in free agency to a team he preferred more, but I was looking forward to seeing Olsen on the Legions' back end.

    23rd Overall:
    C - Dick Cheezy @goldenglutes
    Inactive

For a while Cheezy continued to slowly develop, and it gave me hope that at least one pick from my first ever draft would make the VHL. It wasn't meant to be, as moderately short of 250 TPA, Cheezy ultimately went inactive. I believe this was during the SBA-VHL 'incident' that ended in a broken partnership that has since been restored, but I had respect for the 'slow and steady' approach to Cheezy's development.

At a management level, it meant that Golden's player would have been an amazing depth piece for quite some time. He'd be cheap, continue to progress, and serve as a then much needed boost down the middle of our lineup. Sadly... it simply wasn't meant to be. As the sun goes down, and the day comes to an end, my entire season seventy crop of draft picks were busts and it kinda hurts.

    SEASON 71:

    11th Overall:
    LW - Erik Killinger @Peace
    Franchise

Erik Killinger is my player, so obviously he showed up on the Legions' roster, so instead I want to take a minute about the changes I've gone through in an attempt to help build Toronto... I've always been one to claim I wear my heart, my pride, on the sleeve of my shirt and I try to make that obvious by the support I give my players. I changed from a forward (which is the position I always want to play) to a defender just so we could become competitive quicker due to the lack of developing defensive prospects. What hurts more is striking out on free agents that could have made Toronto a competitive team as early as S72.

Obviously Killinger is a 'franchise player', he'll spend the entirety of his career on the blue line now. Not much more to say, so I'll wrap it up here.

    18th Overall:
    RW - Jeff Blaze @NyQuil
    [Semi-Inactive]

I want to be clear here... hindsight is always more clear than the ability to predict the future. I had hoped Blaze would return to form, but it simply didn't happen. Regardless, I was still happy with NyQuil's development as he continued to keep earning TPE for Blaze. Even today, somewhat recently I'd argue, he was around and using the portal's new welfare function to grow Blaze beyond the 250 TPA VHLM cap. I'm not going to give this one a bust rating -- primarily because he's still updating his player from time to time -- but rather call myself out. I should have investigated more, and not let my mind make this pick for me on hope alone.

Generally, though, because of Killinger's unique selection... S71 wasn't so bad.

    SEASON 72:

    21st Overall:
    RW - Michael Mac @LastOneUp
    Inactive

LastOneUp's Michael Mac was an excellent prospect to select at 21st overall, and frankly, I don't regret this decision at all even as I write this article. I had discussed it with @diamond_ace shortly after making the pick, and he revealed a few things I'll keep between us. Morale of that conversation though is Toronto picked a player Prague wanted, and I can respect that. We're both puzzled by his sudden disappearance from the VHL; it could be the SBA-VHL drama, it could be he was drafted by Toronto, or it could be any other reason. Truth is -- unfortunately -- it did happen, and it's another pick that hurts the success of Toronto.

    22nd Overall:
    RW - Joseph Gainer @joeg
    Away

JoeG's season has began... just not here on this virtual sim league, so I'll officially mark his as 'away' in hopes that he'll return. School, sports, and other things are keeping him away last I heard... so that's respectable, and real life should always come first over a website like this. Joe was a member who messaged me about coming to Toronto, claiming his favorite hockey team was the Toronto Maple Leafs, and that he would love to play for my team. I made it happen by trading a first round pick for three second rounds picks, another trade involving Beaviss and myself, which also included the pick I used above to select Michael Mac.

    27th Overall:
    RW - Adam Frence @Kachur
    Retired

Despite my best efforts to understand, communicate and be a presence for Kachur when he returned to the VHL he still decided to retire Frence and leave the Discord. If I'm being honest, this is the pick where I feel the most betrayed, simply because I wear my heart and pride on my sleeve. I stated it above, and I'll state it again here, but I don't want to blame Kachur for retiring out of the Legions' roster. I just have questions, questions I don't want answers to anymore, I've accepted it what it is. When I drafted Frence, I was unaware that he 'deleted his online presence', but was elated when he showed back up.

    38th Overall:
    Ziarie Anigbogu @ngine4
    Steal

Anigbogu is without a doubt a huge win for Toronto, and one of the numerous steals in the S72 VHL Entry Draft according to some articles. Although he's teetering on partial activity, I am still absolutely thrilled with this selection, and he'll finally be making his VHL debut with the Toronto Legion for the start of season seventy four. Ngine4 doesn't know much about hockey, and that's okay, I'm hoping that his interests are growing as he continues to develop his simulation player. Anigbogu is an excellent depth piece, one that I am happy to have, and one that'll replace the deceased Elmebeck as he rides his posthumous player to retirement with Toronto.

    SEASON 73:

    5th Overall:
    C - John Merrick @Steve
    Franchise?

Merrick was my only selection in the season seventy three VHL entry draft, and that's alright... he's a potential franchise player for the Legion and I couldn't be happier. Merrick joins the Toronto lineup at 400 TPE already, and with VHLM graduation and training camp just around the corner, he'll be a quality player for Toronto for seasons to come. Merrick represents a piece of Toronto now, and although I am still unable to get help for himself and Magnum, I know Merrick will contend [he will!] for the top rookie award as a member of the Legions' top forward line.

    SEASON 74:

    25th Overall:
    C - Wolf Weiss @Matmenzinger
    First Line Forward

Weiss' selection made sense for Toronto, as we were hoping [and still are hoping] to acquire the services of some talented defensive free agents this season. Matmenzinger's previous player was a staple for his team, and Tocco was an excellent player for the period he played in, so I was thrilled with this draft selection. I'll be the first to admit I didn't have him scouted, but I didn't expect him to drop to 25th, and I was honestly surprised when he did. I sent him a PM, and I think things are going excellent right now, so I'm a happy camper with this pick.

    35th Overall:
    LW - Nicholas Sunderbruch @NickSunderbruch
    First Line Forward

The potential is there, and I believe the desire too, as the member has already started to become active within the Discord LR. Nick joined the VHL late into the draft season, earning his first TPE at the end of July, and has climbed a considerable way already. Sunderbruch has the ability to become a top line forward for the Legion, assuming he's on a team fully manned, and I think he has the means to get there. Overall the season seventy four draft class is still young... obviously... but I have great faith in the two players I selected.

    Thanks for reading!

I want to say a special thank you to everyone I have selected, whether you are here or not, which is why I tagged you. You are all apart of Toronto's history now, be that good or bad, so I will take this moment to say I appreciate you. Take care, people, and stay safe.

I really like this design. I have done several with this layout and I find it very pleasing. Just a couple of tips from what I see. You flipped the player, which in some cases needs to be done, but I try to get rid of any branding or words that are spelt backwards. My second thought was why you flipped it in the first place. From what I see, the render would show more of the logo if it were on the right. Just small things but worth mentioning. Overall I love this look. Keep working, you have skills. 8.5/10

    Recap
Week 3 saw goalies struggle massively, with only 3 shutouts recorded the entire week, scorers are seeing their point totals inflate. We have numerous players on pace to break 100 points, and as we pass the midway point of the season, goalies are finding it tough. The playoff race is heating up in both conferences, and while the teams outside looking in have some work to do, the gap is definitely manageable and a win streak could shake things up immensely. The trade deadline is coming up very quickly and things could be shaken up at the drop of a hat, things have been quiet this season and I expect the trade talks to start heating up very shortly.

    Power Rankings
Featured on this week’s graphic we have Erik Summers of the Helsinki Titans, Ambrose Stark who plays for the Seattle Bears, and Grekkark Gyrfalcon, Malmo Nighthawks goaltender.

@Pengu with the solid template that is just oh so sweet

Week 3 was a week of dominating performances by our number 1 ranked team, the Helsinki Titans. Helsinki climbs up 4 spots from last week and posted an amazing 13-2 record this week, including an 11 game winning streak. Both Zamboni Driver and Samuel Ross were great in net for the Titans, helping them gain a 4 point cushion for the number 1 spot in the VHL standings. Our #2 team this week is the Seattle Bears. Seattle falls one spot from last week but still posted a solid 10-4-1 record this week behind a great week by Hulk Hogan. Seattle is tied with New York for the first seed in the North American Conference with 61 points on the season.

The number 3 team this week is the Malmo Nighthawks. Malmo was one of this week’s biggest jumpers as they didn’t appear on our week 2 rankings. They were led by Lewis Dawson, who recorded 29 points in 15 games and leading Malmo to a 10-5-0 record through the week. Not too far behind them in 4th is the Moscow Menace, led by an amazing week from their goaltender, Raymond Bernard. Bernard posted a 0.920 save percentage and 2.36 goals-against average in 13 starts this week, going 9-4 and recording a shutout along the way. He’s a big part of the recent surge for the Menace.

Finishing in 5th this week are the New York Americans. New York went 8-4-3 this week and actually took a fall in the standings, moving from sole possession of the first place in the NA Conference into a tie with the Seattle Bears. New York will have to pick up their game if they want to contend for that top spot. Right behind them in 6th are the defending Continental Cup Champions in the Riga Reign, who went 8-5-2 this week. Goaltender Greg Eagles had another great week, winning 8 of his 13 starts and posting a 0.910 save percentage and 3.13 goals-against average. Riga is another team that may have to pick up their game to contend, especially with the EU conference standings being so close this year.

The 7th ranked team this week is the D.C. Dragons. The Dragons fought and clawed their way to an 8-6 finish this week. Rookie Groovy Dood has been having a solid campaign with a surging D.C. squad and he will be a big part of their push for a playoff spot. The last team on our rankings is the Calgary Wranglers, who continue to fall in our rankings, falling 1 spot from last week. Calgary finished the week with an 8-6-1 record. Not the worst numbers, but with the expectations of this Calgary team, they have to pick up their play if they want a shot at a higher seeding and possible Continental Cup glory.

    Notable Games

Game 244 - Warsaw Predators vs London United
Our first game of the week was between two brand new teams to the league, and wow did they ever put on a show in this one. The scoring was opened by Warsaw just under 3 minutes into the game, and it was Alex Bridges who unleashed a slapshot from the point to capitalize on an early power play. London didn’t let the early goal get to them, as they regrouped quickly and prevented any more goals. About halfway through the 1st period, James Rose, who is having a fine rookie season, stepped up with 2 very quick goals just 41 seconds apart and just like that London had a lead. They took that lead into the 2nd period, and this is where the game started to open up. Damien Wolfe decided that he could do one better than Rose and he scored 2 goals of his own, but this time just 26 seconds apart, and again the lead had changed this time in favour of the Warsaw Predators. The goals in this one were coming in pairs, and they were coming quickly at that. London replied with another couple of goals to take back the lead by Guy Lesieur and The Terrible Trivium, and again these were less than a minute apart with just 33 seconds separating them. Taking advantage of a power play, Hunter Hearst Helmsley scored a nice goal to tie the game back up, but London struck back shortly after through Chico Smeb to once again take the lead. The 3rd period wasn’t as eventful as the 2nd but London finally got more than a 1 goal lead and it was Guy Lesieur getting his 2nd of the game to increase the lead. In the final minute of the game with the goalie pulled, Damien Wolfe scored a clutch goal to notch a hat trick and set up a thrilling end to the game, but it was London who managed to hold on for a 6-5 victory in this absolutely amazing game.

Game 326 - New York Americans vs Helsinki Titans
This inter-conference game between the top teams in the league proved to be one of the best matchups of the week. The two teams did not disappoint and things were off to a quick start with Owen Nolan notching the opener just 1:46 into the game. Helsinki answered that with 2 goals of their own, with one from Spencer Elsby on the power play, and one from Daldo. However, just 6 seconds after taking the lead, the New York Americans had tied the game right back up with Owen Nolan burying his 2nd of the game. Still, in the 1st period, the Americans started taking it to Helsinki and scored another goal, this time from Julius Freeman and then adding a 4th goal from Hugh Jass to end the 1st period. The rest of the game was mostly Helsinki trying to chip away at that 2 goal deficit that they found themselves in, and midway through the 2nd period, they got their lifeline from Erik Summers who finished a great passing play with a quick shot that fooled the goalie. Helsinki kept up the good play through to the 3rd period where they just needed 1 more goal to tie it up. With less than 8 minutes to play in the 3rd, Erik Draven unleashed a rocket one-timer past the New York netminder and tied the game at 4 apiece. The game ended up needing a shootout to decide the winner, and after Valtteri Vaakanainen scored in round 4 with a nice deke, the rookie goaltender Zamboni Driver came up with a big save to secure the comeback win for Helsinki.

Game 329 - HC Davos vs Malmo Nighthawks
Our final matchup of the week is between these European Conference rivals that left everything out on the ice in this particular game. The game started off slowly, with both teams feeling each other out before Lewis Dawson opened the scoring halfway through the 1st period. Davos was eager to get back on level terms though, and just 3 minutes into the 2nd frame they had their equalizer from David OQuinn. The Nighthawks took exception to that go-ahead goal and came back shortly after with a goal from Marshall James Frostbeard and just like that their lead was restored. The wheels then fell off the wagon for Malmo and Davos scored 4 unanswered goals with 2 each from SS Hornet and Jerry Garcia. The game had been turned on its head and Davos took a 5-2 lead into the 2nd intermission. Malmo’s coach must’ve had some very inspirational words for his team, because they stormed out of the gates in the 3rd period and had scored 2 goals within 36 seconds, from Dawson and Frostbeard once again. Finally, up stepped the top rookie scorer this season, Chris Hylands, who tied the game up with just over 7 minutes to play. He then popped up again with 1:06 left on the clock and buried the game-winner with a one-timer from Condor Adrienne. A great comeback victory for Malmo and a phenomenal game to end our games of the week on.

    Events of the Week

    Fights
Game 236 - BRAWL! This game between London and Vancouver was feisty right from the get-go. Each team came out and made a statement by hitting early and hitting often. This would eventually erupt into a line brawl that saw Jungkok ejected for instigating. The original fight was between Balentine Kidd and Gregg Stallion, which had punches landed by both but Kidd was able to dispatch the rookie. Jungkok then took it upon himself to fight with Koda Adok which didn’t have a clear winner, unfortunately for Jungkok who was ejected for picking the fight. Meanwhile, Jeff Downey and β-LDN RW1 ended up in a scrap of their own which Downey easily won without much effort.
Game 266 - BRAWL! At the end of this close game between Toronto and Moscow, a huge fight broke out after frustrations boiled over for the Legion players. We had Gabriel Gutzwiler and Vin Calia who put on a great show, trading punches and eventually having to be broken up by the refs. There was β-TOR D2 who picked a fight with Ryo Yamazuki II which was another interesting fight with punches connecting from both players and β-TOR D2 was ejected after the fight for instigating. The last players to fight were β-TOR LW2 and Vladimir Pavlov which also had no clear winner after the refs quickly put an end to that fight so as to not let things get too out of hand. That fight also resulted in an ejection, but for Pavlov, so both teams were short 1 player by the end of that soiree.
Game 288 - Jay Jones fights twice Newcomer to the league, Jay Jones had something to prove in this game, considering he fought 2 Vancouver players in the 3rd period. Just 23 seconds into the 3rd, hoping to light a fire underneath his teammates, Jones and Jeff Downey dropped the gloves and started filling each other in. Multiple punches were hit by each player but it was Jay Jones who stood tall at the end. Then, after not being happy with his team’s response, he went out and got into another fight, this time against Andrew Su. Jones came out swinging in this one again, perhaps catching Su off guard, and it was only a couple of punches before Su had hit the ice.
Game 307 - Helmsley fights twice Hunter Hearst Helmsley took on two different Calgary players in this blowout loss. First, it was Kris Rice who threw fisticuffs with HHH, and he actually ended up taking the win over Helmsley. Both players landed some good blows but Rice landed some clean hits for the win. Hunter then made it his mission to get back at Calgary and he ended up coaxing RJ Jubis into a fight that ultimately ended in a draw. The refs took issue with the 2nd fight and ended up giving him game misconduct for instigating.
    Hat-Tricks

Game 244 - Damien Wolfe Warsaw Predators forward, Damien Wolfe, scored a hat trick for his team in this game against London. He gave his team the lead early in the 2nd period with 2 quick goals scored only 26 seconds apart, but the Predators weren’t able to hold on. Wolfe got his team within 1 goal with his 3rd of the night late in the final period, but they ultimately came up short.
Game 249 - Robin Winter Last season’s 2nd overall pick, Robin Winter scored a wonderful 1st-period hat trick in this game against the Wolves. He helped his team take a commanding lead early on in the game and Davos never looked back in this one, eventually winning the game by a score of 5-3.
    Game 264 - ACL TEAR
He may have announced his retirement at the start of the season, but ACL TEAR is still kicking in the VHL. He scored the 1st goal of the game, and then in the 2nd period, he helped spark a comeback with 2 goals that set the stage for a great overtime win for the Calgary Wranglers.

    Game 268 - Gabriel Gutzwiler
This game saw a rare hat trick from a defenceman! Toronto had an amazing 3rd-period performance with 4 goals that propelled them to a 5-1 win, and Gabriel Gutzwiler put his name on the scoresheet 3 times. He scored what ended up being the game-winner, and another 2 goals late in the period to get the hat trick.

    Game 275 - Guy Lesieur
After being traded only a few games before, Guy Lesieur made a near-instant impact with a hat trick against the Malmo Nighthawks. This game was all tied up heading into the 3rd before Lesieur took things into his own hands and scored a natural hat trick that helped the Dragons secure a 6-3 victory.

    Game 282 - Andrew Su
Andrew Su scored a goal in each period as the Vancouver Wolves stormed to victory over the London United. He opened the scoring late in the 3rd and Vancouver kept their foot on the gas the entire game en route to a dominant 6-1 victory.

Game 284 - Hunter Hearst Helmsley
This battle between expansion teams was highlighted by Hunter Hearst Helmsley scoring all 3 of Warsaw’s goals and carrying them to a win. The game was tied 2-2 when HHH notched a power-play marker early in the 3rd period that ended up being the game-winner.

    Game 287 - Ambrose Stark
Another hat trick from a retiring player, but this time it’s Ambrose Stark. This back and forth contest was close for most of the game, but a goal in all 3 periods from the veteran Stark ensured that Seattle was able to go home with a win.

    Game 304 - RJ Jubis
Wranglers forward RJ Jubis continues his fine performance this season with his 2nd hat trick of the year. This is his first of 2 hat tricks this week and this one against LA was just what Calgary needed. He helped the Wranglers gain a crucial lead in the first and they used that momentum to dominate the game and take the win. He would complete the hat trick late in the 3rd with the team’s final goal.

    Game 307 - RJ Jubis
Jubis’ 2nd hat trick of the week was nearly identical to his first, which is pretty crazy if you ask me, but he actually did one better and had 4 goals in this game. He once again scored 2 goals in the first which helped set the tone for Calgary, and at the end of the game, he scored the team’s final goal again which also sealed his hat trick. He did have a goal in between those in the 2nd period as Calgary added to their lead, but it was nearly a carbon copy of his hat trick in the game before. Jubis has 3 hat tricks this year and that is good enough for 2nd in the league.

    Game 313 - Chad Magnum
Another natural hat trick this week, but this time by Chad Magnum of the Toronto Legion. Magnum came out firing on all cylinders in this contest and scored 3 unanswered goals all by himself, with 2 of them coming just 12 seconds apart. A fine performance indeed from the Toronto forward, who nearly provided all of the offence for Toronto in this one.

    Game 325 - Balentine Kidd
This back and forth game between London and Vancouver can be highlighted by Balentine Kidd scoring a hat trick that was crucial to securing a win for the London United. He scored a goal that tied up the game in the 1st period, and that gave London some momentum which they capitalized on. Kidd also had the game-winner midway through the 3rd period.

    Game 334 - Chris Hylands
In this comeback victory for the Malmo Nighthawks, Chris Hylands played the role of hero. Early in the game, Malmo found themselves trailing by 2 goals, but Hylands was able to cut that lead to just 1. He did the same again early in the 3rd period on the power play after LA had restored their 2 goal lead in the 2nd frame. He then popped up in overtime and scored the game-winner off a nice feed from Lewis Dawson.

    Game 336 - Mat Tocco
Vancouver scored 4 goals in the opening period of this game against Riga, and Mat Tocco had 2 of those. The early flurry was pretty much all that the Wolves needed to secure the victory, but Tocco wanted some personal glory as well. He managed to complete his hat trick in the 2nd period as the Wolves strolled to a pretty easy 5-2 victory.

    Shutouts

Game 266 - Moscow Menace vs. Toronto Legion Earning his first shutout of the season in this stellar performance against Toronto, Raymond Bernard stopped all 42 shots that the Legion sent his way. He was busy all throughout the game, and when you play as well as he did, your team always has a chance of winning and Moscow did just that by a score of 2-0.
Game 267 - New York Americans vs. London United Another shutout this week from red hot netminder A Red Guy. This is his 3rd of the season, and his solid performance continues as the New York Americans look to hold on to that top seed in the North American Conference. It wasn’t quite as miraculous of a performance as last week, having only 25 saves to make, but a strong outing nonetheless that his team will be thanking him for.
Game 345 - Helsinki Titans vs. Warsaw Predators Samuel Ross also earns his first shutout of the season this week, this one being against the Warsaw Predators. It was a solid game from Ross as he pushed aside all 28 shots that Warsaw managed. The veteran goaltender was traded last season from Davos where he played his entire career and is having a solid year on the 1st placed Helsinki Titans.
    Rookie Spotlight
    Groovy Dood

Thank you @Zetterberg for the wonderful banner

Being the first overall pick can put a lot of pressure on a player, especially if the team has expectations immediately after the selection. For Groovy Dood of the D.C. Dragons, this continues to be the case. D.C. jumped up 1 spot in the draft lottery, from 2nd to 1st to select Dood first overall. Despite not being the best player in the class, D.C. needed a forward and went in for Dood.

Dood, who made the jump to the VHL surprisingly early, has put up solid numbers so far in his rookie season. So far in 44 games, Dood has scored 8 goals to go along with 11 assists, not the best numbers but with D.C. being a fringe playoff contender this year, his output has been solid. Dood has also made his game more physical, recording 64 hits within those 44 games.

We’ve seen him grow so far this year and it will be fun to see what kind of player the coaches in D.C. will mould him into. Dood has a lot of potential, not just as a two-way forward. His defensive abilities so far in the VHL have been impressive, helping D.C. keep pucks out of their net by stripping the puck from opponents in the defensive zone. While the pressure of being the top pick is a lot, Dood has done a good job handling the pressure and it will be interesting to see where he is in a few seasons.

Matmenzinger reacted to Devise in The Meta
I mean if we paid in house for it but at a rate that would be affordable to us; and we added maybe a couple of names on top of @Will and @Josh, I'm kinda curious...what we could do. It's a sim engine so it's not like we are talking about a project that's going to be the easiest thing to accomplish, otherwise it'd be huge. But yeah...I'm really curious what the war room table for that looks like if Blue just sat down and said "okay how would we really go about making this happen in house."

This was an enjoyable read though. The meta being what it is, and for how long it is probably is the VHL's most longstanding outdated aspect. But because of the love for the record books; the comparisons to different era's and just honoring how long we've been standing we have stuck with a sim system that has pretty much kept some form of this meta in tact for as long as I've been here. With a larger user base and more league parity off/on we have seen more people experiment just for the fun of it which is always fresh. But it often coming entirely because so many people have built players inside of the meta for so long that doing something different is really the draw I think speaks to where our meta is at. It's rough because at the same time I can already see the arguments forming to suggest that the meta is a big part of league stability, and it's tough to disagree with that point.

It's kind of how I felt about the portal before it was implemented. I think that some sort of sim engine change is an inevitably the longer this league goes on. However it's likely more a question of when, and if there is a strong enough catalyst as to a why that'll push enough of the member base and people in charge to get there. With so many other large and small tweaks going on and us continuing to evolve the state of the portal, even the idea of switching sims as a project is just such a daunting larger thing that is going to take so much testing. For a league that has focused so much on stability a big shift like that just isn't something we can really afford to just head dive into and hope for the best.

That's a blackjack of players worth keeping an eye on and will most likely continue to succeed this season because of their builds and situations they're in with their current team, if you are a VHL GM scouting, VHLM GM looking for a trade or just another player who wants to rank themselves with the rest of the prospects.. Hope you enjoyed!

Really like the sig but I feel like there's a lot of empty space that is not being put to good use. Maybe the addition of a team logo would help or maybe reducing the render's size and image height could help. Otherwise I like the helmet swap a lot and think it's pretty cool.

Awesome job with the colors and lighting, everything blends in together nicely and the logo on the helmet does too (kind of matches and looks like the shoulder patch). I like the text but maybe add your first name or jersey number? Just looks weird all by itself for some reason.. Maybe straighten it? Good choice picking the style though! Lastly, the concept is the coolest thing about the signature, little bit random but I really like the design for some reason. Overall I'd give it a 7.5/10!
