Elmebeck got a reaction from a_Ferk in The first rule of VHL is that you don't talk about VHLM GM's
If you listen long enough through the grapevine you'll hear, "I miss my time in VHLM", guaranteed.

The charter for VHLM is pretty clear: PLAYER RETENTION

And the VHLM GM's have done it beautifully.

I am a pretty new player, graciously allowed to become AGM of Saskatoon, but looking through the league and my first impression when signing up in Houston, I have not interacted with even one bad GM or even AGM here. That is not saying or implying that VHL has worse GM's, but it seems like if some people long back to the VHLM days then VHLM is working as intended, and possibly even better than VHL.... (not saying that is so , but eh, observing...)

Just by pure luck I found myself in the Houston locker room my first season (sadly not the season that Houston won), after that I had the good luck and opportunity to work beside Peace in Saskatoon; and you two (@FrostBeard , @Peace )immediately set a level on the behavior and expectations here.

    Rule 1: Activity rules.
This is not of course just a rule in lonesome, it's the base on what the league rests on. a 32 TPE active is to be prioritized over a 192 TPE four months inactive. But that's not even my point here, what my GM's have done and the VHLM GM's I watch do is to make it fun to actually be involved. It's part being a leader, and part being a cheerleader.

Rule 2: If you can go up to the VHL, you should go up to the VHL. Fly my boy!
This is important I think and nice when you hear that from your GM: "We'd really need to keep you for one more season to be honest, but I'd really like you to go and make the best of your eight seasons so please don't stay down."

Yeah, VHLM is for retention, making people feel good and apply themselves even (or often) on a shitty team and go have their successful VHL career.

    Rule 3: Have fun!
Maybe this is rule one? But the whole point is to have fun right, not just grind. And an active locker room, and active GM/AGM-pair and some pro-active players can make all the difference in the world. So not just tying these active people to you and the team, the VHLM GM also needs to awaken that in people for it to even appear.... and then insist they leave.

Final thought: Retention is not the correct word. VHLM is the first thing you see from the league, your first impression. It's so much more than just retention, and the good VHLM GM's deserve to be credited for their work. I have spoken to a bunch of other VHLM GM's (and perhaps some future ones too) and none have disappointed me this far, so this "Unsung Heroes" is for the bread and butter GM's (and AGM's, why not ) of the VHL(M).

I would add to this that VHLM and VHL doesn't exist in a vacuum, you have this great support organization in the background too - maybe I'll write more about that next season. But for this season the VHLM GM's are my unsung heroes.

New season! New presser! (sorry about being a bit late)

    1. Who do you think will lead Saskatoon in points at the middle mark of the season?
    2. How do you think we will finish in the regular season standings? A playoff spot, how high?
    3. What do you think about the trades this off-season?
    4. Happy with your own off-season and development for this upcoming one?
    5. Anyone on the team you're particularly excited to play with this season?
    6. What are the expectations you have on yourself this season?

Week ending 19th of January, the glorious year of 2020.

What an amazing season we had, and to be honest I don't think we look particularly bad right now despite losing quite a lot of the high-TPA core from last season. I'm pretty optimistic we will reach the playoffs and hopefully do well again, but it certainly wont be the blow-out season that last one was.

So, a new, fresh press conference before the season starts for real.

    1. I believe we drafted decently for having so late picks, what could we have done better, and am I correct in my assessment above that we probably will do decent... or even well, this season too?

    2. Were you drafted to VHL this draft but still with us, then are you happy with where you ended up? If new to the league and not yet in the VHL draft, any specific location other than New York you'd want to end up in at the end of this season?

    3. I will be looking to get an AGM in a few weeks (I just want to stand on solid ground first before initiating that process); would you want to step up to that role or have anyone you'd recommend me to take on?

    4. Actually, I have been talking us up a bit; PREDICTIONS: How will we place in the league and/or the playoffs, like honestly.

    5. Tell me in MORE than three words how your off-season has been (and do take inspiration from Marcus Grönholm if you need to (I adore him) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pr-PISRQfpI

    6. What are your goals and/or expectations for your player this season?

It's getting colder... good thing we can warm with the finals.

    1. By the time you answer this we may have either won or lost the finals. How do you think we did over the playoff?
    2. Peace will be moving on to Toronto, is he set up for immediate success there and/or how do you believe he will do?
    3. When Peace leaves I will probably apply for the GM-ship here, if you're staying down would you be happy with that?
    4. Who are some members that deserve GM jobs in the league? VHLM or VHL. (cheekily assuming I do)
    5. How do you think as a team we can improve for next season?
    6. The VHL's first annual christmas charity drive was a resounding success, with the league members meeting our donation goal within a few hours. Have you claimed your free doubles week yet?  (Everybody gets one, regardless of donating or not)

    1. Was sweeping Yukon expected?
    2. Any thoughts on the next round for us?
    3. Surprised by either the VHLM or VHL playoff results so far?
    4. If you are aware, involved or affected by the Calgary drama, any comments?
    5. VHLM only has 11 teams now, let's say we could add a 12th to keep numbers even - where would it be situated and what would its name be?
    6. Did you have a good holiday break?
    7. Any presents of note - given or received?
    8. Do you scoff at the sales between Christmas and New Years or do you splurge in the "sales"?
    9. Plans for New Years?
    10. Resolutions for New Years?

SASKATOON - The VHL(M) Awards recently happened and as expected, the Saskatoon Wild and their player's won a ton of awards. Along with their Founders Cup, they won the Prime Minister's Cup as the top team in the regular season with their historic 68-4-0 record in season 69. The Wild's Danny DeYeeto won the Ethan Osborne trophy for leading the league in points, the Mitch Higgins for the Most Valuable Player of the Victory Hockey League Minors in the regular season, and the Ryan Sullivan award for being the league's top defenseman. David OQuinn went home with the Vladmir Boomchenko award, leading the league in assists. As expected, the mastermind @Peace, the former Wild general manager (as well as the current manager of the Toronto Legion), won the Jack Reilly award for top GM. Edwin THE Encarnacion and Jacques Lafontaine shared the Skylar Rift trophy with Mississauga Hounds netminder Jimmy Spyro. Jacques Lafontaine also went home with the Benoit Devereux trophy, being chosen as the league's top goaltender.

Lafontaine had an amazing season with the loaded Saskatoon Wild, as he had a save percentage of 0.900, and an impressive Goals Against Average of 1.83. In the playoffs, where he tied for the Skylar Rift, he had a save percentage of 0.899 and a respectable Goals Against Average of 2.28. When it comes to shutouts, he had 5 in the regular season and 2 in the Victory Hockey League Minors players.

"Yeah, I feel great. I'm honoured to have won these two awards. I was thinking that I'd maybe win the Benoit Devereux, which I did end up winning and I'm grateful for winning but I didn't expect to win the Skylar Rift. I'll take it though. But yeah, congratulations to everybody else who won an award. I can't wait to play against you all in the future, even those who didn't win any awards this year," he said in an interview.

Jacques Lafontaine, despite his thankfulness for the awards, thinks that he still has to do more. "Well, I won two awards. That's great and all but now I have to think about my future. I'm not saying that I'm not proud of my accomplishments, I'm just saying that this isn't the end. This isn't all I have to be remembered for. Jacques Lafontaine won't just be a Victory Hockey League Minors star. The minors were just the start. Now I have to continue to press on as I enter into the big leagues. I just gotta keep on trying to reach the next step and I have to improve my game as I go along. This isn't the end. Heck, it isn't even near the end. So you bet your ass that I'm gonna be working hard this season. I'm going all out. Reaction time, skating, hand speed, controlling rebounds, I'm practicing it all. The Calgary Wranglers picked me because they thought I would be able to handle being their starter. They chose me because they thought I'd be the best. I'm sure as hell gonna prove them right."

The announcement last night (or this morning for me) about outlawing trivia answer sharing has caught me off guard. When I first read it I assumed that I had somehow slept through February and March and it was now April Fools Day but reading further I realised it was not a joke. The decision seems to have been taken as a snap decision within about an hour last night on Discord. I did not go onto Discord last night so was completely blindsided by it, but although a word of warning would have been nice given I created and run the thing, that lack of consultation is not why I am stepping down.

No, I am stepping down because I do not want to be associated with such a draconian measure. I have never outlawed anything other than people literally replying to the thread with the answers because that completely defeats the point. If people want to rely on their teammates or friends, it never bothered me.

The spirit of trivia for me is effectively twofold. You have a group of people who genuinely enjoy finding the answers and will do so regardless of how easy it is to get them anyway. That's the real target audience. But then you have most of the league who don't necessarily know or care about finding the answers and just want the TPE. And there is nothing wrong with that. I am a firm believer that even by blindly filling out the form every week without doing the research, a member who does that for many weeks and seasons will pick up some VHL history they wouldn't otherwise know. And that to me is still a win and helps carry the league's legacy as the longest lasting sim league because we still have an appreciation for long-gone players and seasons.

So with that in mind, effective tomorrow I will be stepping down as head of trivia after paying out the week 2 answers for S70. If the league's stance changes I will be happy to resume the role, but if not it's been a good ride but you've made a mistake.

Hello everyone. Apologies for being a little bit behind time on this. I've been procrastinating. It's basically been done for awhile. Work + life have been somewhat busy and exhausting lately. However, happy to bring back another round of our special version of the "Top Prospects Game" where we do the magical draft based off the final regular season builds etc, roll into 3 games and see who runs out the victor. I'm almost certain that the record right now between us two commissioners is 1-1 but I could be wrong? BUT with that being said.... ARE YOU READY FOR A BATTLE? C - Podrick Cast, S61-S68
    RS: 576 GP, 379 G, 467 A, 846 P, 345 PIM, 487 HIT, 222 SB, 59 GW
    PO: 35 GP, 8 G, 24 A, 32 P, -4, 19 PIM, 24 HIT, 17 SB, 1 GW

    2x All-VHL First Team (S62, S67)
    2x All-VHL Second Team (S63, S64)
    One Continental Cup (S63)

@Victor's pedigree in the VHL Hall of Fame is nothing to scoff at and today he adds yet another player to the already impressive list. Drafted 3rd overall in S61 Cast made it his mission immediately to prove that the two selections before him were mistakes. He went to work immediately with 97 points in his rookie season, more than enough to nab himself the Stolzschweiger Trophy as the league's top rookie. From there Cast refused to slow down, scoring 174 points in his sophomore season; a point total unheard of in modern day VHL standards where scoring in general is on the downturn. This season would prove to be his best but by no means did Cast slow down. He would amass 846 points in total, the most of his draft class, as well as 1635 TPE, also the most in his class. One of the most prolific players the VHL has seen in 69 seasons Cast enters the Hall of Fame as a first ballot choice with a near unanimous vote.

    2x All-VHL Second Team (S63, S65)
    One Continental Cup (S66)

Throughout 8 seasons playing together it was rare to see mention of Cast without comparing him to the other inductee for this season: Matt Thompson. The 10th player from the @Beketov agency, Thompson was drafted first in S61and the rivalry with Cast was instantaneous. Like Cast, Thompson's strongest season was the high scoring S62 where he managed 150 points after having a mediocre rookie season in S61. Unlike Cast Thompson preferred to score rather than pass and amassed 422 goals over his career, good for 4th place all-time with only S10 and below players having scored more. Thompson also made it his goal to play both sides of the puck resulting in 4 Scott Boulet awards including 3 consecutively from S64 to S66. Despite never winning the Kanou award for playoff MVP it was also Thompson's playoff performances where he truly shined, even with only 1 continental cup. With 98 playoff points in only 65 games Thompson managed an astounding 1.5 PPG in the playoffs. 400+ goals, 800+ points, and an award cabinet that would make almost any player jealous made Thompson an easy and unanimous choice for the Hall of Fame this season and he once again does something alongside Cast as they both enter the Hall of Fame.

    Saskatoon Wild S69 Team Awards

What a year S69 was for the Saskatoon Wild!

They dominated the VHLM in a manner few teams have managed before, posting league records for Points (136), Wins (68), Least Losses (4), Road Wins (32), and the 2nd best offense ever seen with 408 goals. Only the Ottawa Lynx’s astronomical total of 490 goals from S58 is better. An incredible seven players, including three defensemen, reached the 100-point mark for Saskatoon. Special teams were a boon for the Wild as their power play produced at the 8th best rate ever (30%) and was the best in eleven seasons and their penalty kill was the 4th best in league history (89.5%). Not to mention, Saskatoon then cruised through the playoffs with a 12-2 record with no team really giving them much trouble to win the Founder’s Cup over the Mississauga Hounds.

Saskatoon was led by defenseman Danny DeYeeto, acquired from Minnesota in the off-season. DeYeeto proceeded to put together the greatest offensive season by a defenseman since the Ottawa Lynx’s Adam Warlock in S58. DeYeeto became the first blueliner since Warlock to score 50 goals and he led the league in points (145), plus/minus (117 – tied with Warlock for the league record), penalty minutes (176), power play goals (30) and power play points (65).

Without further ado, here are the award winners as voted by the Saskatoon Wild players and management:

    Most Valuable Player:
    Danny DeYeeto

The first two awards are no-brainers. Danny DeYeeto won the Mitch Higgins Trophy as the MVP for the entire VHLM so why wouldn’t he win for his own team? DeYeeto led the Wild in goals, points, plus/minus, penalty minutes, hits, shots (tie), power play goal and points and “1st Star” selections. In other words, he did everything for the almost unbeatable Wild. The season would have been very different without his contributions at both ends of the ice.

    Voting: DeYeeto (7), Ohradka (2), Lafontaine (1), O’Quinn (1)

    Best Defenseman (Unanimous):
    Danny DeYeeto

Again, when a player wins the Ryan Sullivan Trophy as the league’s best defenseman, it’s hard to not give him the same award for his team. In fact, this year’s Best Defenseman award was the first unanimous vote in the Team Awards two-year history. Although the “Big-3” on the backend for Saskatoon (DeYeeto, Edwin THE Encarnacion, David O’Quinn) all had astounding 100-point seasons, DeYeeto was a step above in leading the blueline crew throughout the season.

    Voting: DeYeeto (11)

    Unsung Hero (3-Way Tie):
    Mikko Lahtinen
    Edu Stava
    Jacques Lafontaine

As is sometimes seen when one team has such a dominating season like the Saskatoon Wild, there are the clear stars but then there are the supporting cast that make significant, even career-high, contributions that can be overshadowed by the more recognizable names. Such was the case for the Wild to the point where a large portion of the roster were absolutely outstanding and the chemistry was almost molecular. Nine players had 90+ points and seven had 40+ goals. Therefore, the vote was widely divided with eight players receiving votes. Three players received two votes each so they will share the Unsung Hero award.

Mikko Lahtinen came to Saskatoon via a trade with Las Vegas and wasted no time in becoming an important cog in the unstoppable Wild wheel in his first full season. He finished ninth in team scoring with 93 points and tied for fourth in goals with 44. His presence was especially felt on the Wild’s potent power play as he was third in power play goals with 15 and fourth in power play points with 43.

Edu Stava was another trade pick-up as the defending champion Houston Bulls sent their fifth leading scorer to the Wild who received another solid contributor with something else they were shooting for – a Founder’s Cup. Stava provided all that and more. He had the highest shooting percentage on the team and set career-highs in almost every category with 94 points and was fourth with 7 game winning goals. He also provided some needed snarl as he was third with 63 penalty minutes and had 116 hits.

Jacques Lafontaine came into his first season after being drafted 3rd overall to blossom into a champion and record holder. Some may attribute his record-setting season to playing behind one of the best teams and bluelines the league has ever seen, but make no mistake, without Lafontaine’s work ethic and dedication to his craft, it would have been a very different season for the Wild. He won the Benoit Devereux Trophy as the league top goaltender and deservedly so, as he kept the Wild’s high-flying offense in many games and set a league single-season goalie record with 68 wins.

Voting: Lahtinen, Stava, Lafontaine (2 each), Havlova, Foilen, Encarnacion, O’Quinn, Ohradka (1 each)

    Wild Man:
    Ondrej Ohradka

The Wild Man award takes a lot of factors into consideration: being a good teammate, on and off ice contributions, dedication, and leadership among them. Last season’s MVP for the Wild was voted as this year’s Wild Man. There were a lot of worthy candidates as six different people received votes.

Despite taking a reduced on-ice role for much of the season as the Wild rolled out a very deep roster, Ondrej Ohradka continued where he left off last season and led a young dynamic team by example with his heart, determination, and sacrifice to the pinnacle of the VHLM – winning the Prime Minister’s and Founder’s Cups. The veteran continued his torrid scoring pace and led Wild forwards with his second consecutive 100+ point campaign (118 points) and earned his second consecutive placement on the All-VHLM Second Team. He led all Wild forwards in most statistical categories and was among the league leaders in points, assists, power play goals, assists, and points, and game winning goals. He also led the league in Points/20 minutes with an incredible 2.01 P/20 while becoming Saskatoon’s franchise leader in goals and game-winning goals.

Voting: Ohradka (4), O’Quinn, Lahtinen (2 each), McDagg, Killinger, Elmebeck (1 each)

    3-Stars Award:
    Danny DeYeeto

This year’s team 3-Stars award goes to none other than Danny DeYeeto. He narrowly edged Ondrej Ohradka by 10 star points. Ohradka ultimately had more selections but DeYeeto’s excellence beat out Ohradka’s consistency by claiming 12 1st Star selections to Ohradka’s 8.

The final S69 3-Star standings are as follows:

    Player 1st 2nd 3rd Star Points Total Stars Danny DeYeeto 12 4 7 510 23 Ondrej Ohradka 8 8 10 500 26 Edwin THE Encarnacion 8 7 1 390 16 Jesse Nyman 5 7 9 380 21 Killy Foilen 5 8 6 370 19 Dagmar Havlova 5 7 7 360 19 David OQuinn 6 7 0 320 13 Mikko Lahtinen 3 6 4 250 13 Elliot Porter 2 5 2 180 9 Edu Stava 3 1 6 170 10 Jacques Lafontaine 1 3 2 110 6 Damien Wolfe 1 2 4 110 7 Kristopher McDagg 2 0 1 70 3 Uhtred 1 1 0 50 2 Gary Tarantino 0 0 2 20 2
Congratulations to the Saskatoon Wild on a dominant championship season and to all the awards winners! Good luck next season whether you are playing for the Wild again or another team.
