    VHL Top 25 Players
    Part 1: 25-21

Here we go again. The reception was great last season for our collective top 25 players for the upcoming season. Our voters this season were VSN Streamer @Esso2264 , Portal News Manager @Maasa and our five writers - @Doomsday, @Erik Summers, @FrostBeard, @Mr_Hatter and myself. Like last season, we'll try to release one part every day, to bring you all some daily joy in this slow time that is the offseason. Without further ado, let's kick things off with our choice for the league's 25th best player.

    25. Jerry Garcia

An honourable mention in last season's Top 25, Jerry Garcia is finally starting to be recognized as one of the league's best blueliners. He took a step back last season when the Malmö Nighthawks brought Joseph McWolf in to compete for the role of top defenseman. McWolf only stayed one season in Sweden due to cap restrictions, meaning that Garcia should once again be the team's go-to option when they need an offensive spark or a clutch defensive break. He possesses the skill-set necessary to push his name on any of the Labatte, Wylde and Valiq trophies ballots, as demonstrated by his career highs of 60 points, 154 hits and 163 shots blocked. It'll be interesting to see if he can claim his first major award this season, now that he's back at the top of the depth chart at even strength, on the power play and on the penalty kill, as he's among the group of leaders of yet another strong Nighthawks roster. Expect him to exceed most, if not all, of his career marks.
    McWolf

    24. Michael Johnson

A truly amazing talent and an important piece for Malmo these past seasons. Yes, we are talking about their netminder Michael Johnson. This last season for Michael was interesting as he seems to be slowing down in terms of improving his skillset. That said, he improved on his last season results and will be an important piece this upcoming season. With being ranked in this Top 25, Michael Johnson will have to prove that he can sustain and be the true number one goaltender for Malmo Nighthawks and also that they can trust his ability to be the dominant force in playoffs. Playoff performance will be the biggest concern for everyone on Malmo and in VHL as he S68 production on ice was nowhere seen and Johnson all playoffs this season felt out of place. With career average of 0.913 save percentage in regular season, we can expect Michael to keep his style of play and be worthy of 24th place in our Top 25 list.
    FrostBeard

    23. Phil Marleau

An imposing figure at 6'5 and a whopping 240 lbs, Phil Marleau is the type of power forward that can dominate and wear down opposing players. With a very rare combination of size and skill, Marleau could be compared to a player like Eric Lindros, although he hasn't matched Lindros' statistical output yet. However, that doesn't mean the talent isn't there. Drafted third overall in the Season 67 VHL Entry Draft by the Malmo Nighthawks, Marleau has been a staple for the expansion team ever since. As a rookie, he compiled 52 points, scoring 21 goals, 31 assists and a staggering 343 hits. After a shocking drop-off in production in Season 68, Marleau rebounded last season by returning to the form he displayed as a rookie, with 21 goals, 30 assists and 259 hits. With Malmo gearing up for a run at the Cup this season, Marleau is primed for a breakout season and that grabs him a spot at #23 on our list.
    Doomsday

    22. Boris the Forest

The New York American’s S69 captain, Boris the Forest, is entering his place as a star of the league. After having been drafted 10th overall in S67, the American has climbed in the TPE rankings of his draft class, and currently only trails Rayz Funk. Boris’ production has also steadily increased, and he ended the season with a team-high 71 points on 32 goals, good enough for 14th in the league as a whole. His 29.03 MPG was the highest on his team, and that along with his points total sees him as the centrepiece for which this New York franchise will seek to mount a play-off challenge this season. Despite being named to the All-Star game in his rookie year, Boris the Forest has yet to prove himself a dominant force in this league; look to S70 as the Forest’s first point per game season, one of likely many to come.
    Mr_Hatter

    21. Finn Davison

In his first season with Moscow, Finn Davison saw a much heavier workload than ever before, facing 2395 shots in S69. With a much weaker defence in front of him, Davison still managed to put up All-Star level numbers. Finn produced a .919% save percentage and 2.73 average goals against. The GAA is his lowest since his early days in Davos and going from 10 shutouts in S68 to 2 shutouts in S69 highlight the difficulties he faced behind the struggling Moscow defence. However, going into S70 he finds himself traded again, this time to Riga, and their high-power defensive talent is going to put him in a position to contend for the Aidan Shaw trophy this season.
    Erik Summers

And here we are now five players into the list. Five more should add their names tomorrow. Did you expect these particular players to make the list, or are you surprised with their specific position? Let us know in the comments, and tell us where you think your own player ranks among the league.

Just because some people need to see this:  @Members

    Beketov:
“I, Beketov, commish of the VHL, do hereby and in full conscience give @Peace permission and authority to gather public opinions on ways in which to improve the store”

So I was in a debate with @Beketov and @Beaviss (among others) on the Discord about giving money a purpose beyond just saving for depreciation fighters and the occasional uncapped TPE / capped TPE packages. At the moment it's league standard to just accept the lowest contract available because the salary is seasonally readjusted based on the TPA brackets, that artificial inflation could be totally eroded if money actually had some value to the eyes of the individuals. As Beketov said on the Discord, 'money is only meaningful if what you can get with it is worth it.' and he's entirely right.

Right now a lot of people save for the depreciation fighters, some save for experience (oddly), some save for the uncapped TPE packages, and some use their money for the first generation purchases - but those are typically the more common ones, including free weeks, but they're not actually serving any purpose other than money sinks. The player store offers a woefully insufficient amount of options that actually give the virtual money we earn from our virtual contracts any purpose at all, so I wanted to create this thread to collect community opinions on ways to improve the store and make contracts actually worth while.

Contracts are a larger part of hockey, we all debate the value of a player from time to time (10, 000, 000 contracts are overpayments!) and those debates should happen here too.

I have a few ideas in mind, and with @Beketov supporting a league wide discussion in favor of improving the store, it should be an interesting way to collect community feed back.

Also... Beketov is in favor of blowing up the player store and building it back up from the foundations up.

Top Goaltender award "Benoit Devereux Trophy"

For many young and aspiring goaltenders this is the trophy that means there is a truly great path ahead of them. This season we saw brilliance from many young and extraordinary netminders. With so much laying on their shoulders, we always expect a goaltender to be the calmest guy in the Locker Room and in many cases it is. For these 2 gentlemen who received votes that is an everyday state of mind.
Runner up for Top Goaltender award was Isak Sjostrom.

Mitch Higgins Trophy is given to the most valuable player last season. It is an award that emphasis leadership ability and unparalleled skill that is only found in some players.
For us this season we have had many great players all around the VHLM and the award committee had a tough time decided who will take home the trophy.
In award committee ballots there 4 different nominees that received at least 1 vote, but in this case we did have a clear winner and a clear runner-up for this award.
Runner up for this award was the brilliant sniper and the backbone of success in Mexico City, Jaxon Walker.

Ladies and gentlemen, a winner of Mitch Higgins Trophy of S69 is none else than the amazing Danny DeYeeto of Saskatoon Wild!

Playoff MVP Award "Skylar Rift Trophy"

Award that shows player's ability to perform on the next level in a situation when it means the most. A playoff MVP embodies a true dedication to being clutch and having the strength to be the player that everyone on your team can rely on. This is an award that represents a true hero for his team and fans!
With that said, VHLM Award committee was extremely divided on who deserves the award this season. With that said, here are the winners of "Skylar Rift Trophy"

Award is going to be given to 3 Outstanding VHLM players!
    Jimmy Spyro of Mississauga Hounds
Edwin THE Encarnacion of Saskatoon Wild

An award that is given to a GM not only for his ability to give his team a chance to win a cup but also embodies the importance of leading your team off the ice. Being an executive is only about making moves and getting wins, it is about having players that want to play for you and fans that want to support you forever. In this case, we see two nominees this season who both are valued extremely highly by everyone in our community.

Runner-up for Top Executive award this season was Gustav Mattias.

And the winner of Jack Reilly Trophy for being named Top executive of S69 goes to current GM of Toronto Legion and the GM of previously crowned S69 Champions Saskatoon Wild. Award goes to @Peace! Congratulations!

Best two-way forward award, something that many overlook and find not as important as winning an MVP or a scoring title and yet, this is the award a true team player and a person who plays the best game he can on the both ends of the ice. This is an award that embodies excellence that we once was in legendary Matt Bentz. Two outstanding nominees and even more interested results by award committee than what we saw in Playoff MVP vote. The winner only has one vote more than the runner-up.
Runner-up for this award was Minnesota's Chett Bandy

And the winner of Matt Bentz Trophy was the brilliant and outstanding Joakim Sakic of Ottawa Lynx!

    Hi @Members,

There is 1 small change to announce this off-season but I think it's a pain point we will all appreciate being addressed. The number of questions required to earn 1 TPE in Team or Player Press Conferences has been reduced from 5 to 3.

    Revised Press Conference Rules:
All players can earn up to 2 Capped TPE per week through Press Conferences, by way of any combination of the following:
1 TPE for asking 5 3 unique questions in any team or other players press conferences 1 TPE for answering 3 questions in your own team or player press conference

    Mr. Berocka now a GM
    By Steven Brockman

So we have some breaking news that Tomothy Berocka the AGM of the Mississauga Hounds has been promoted to a GM role. GM of Halifax handed in their resignation the night before the draft and the leadership quickly had Mr. Berocka on the phone and offering the position to him. Mr. Berocka seemed to accept at an extremely low pay rate saying that the experience would be worth more than money could buy. I sat down and had a quick chat with Mr. Berocka.

SB: Thank you for sitting down with me, could you tell me how it feels to be a GM now?

TB: It feels great it feels like all my hard work and dedication to the hounds over the last 6 months has really paid off. I just hope I can prove myself in the role as GM.

SB: Is there anything you will miss about the Hounds and is there anything you are happy to escape?

TB: I am going to miss all the people in the locker room I made some good mates there and I will have to make sure that I can keep in contact even though they are the enemies now. Mainly I am happy to escape the dictatorship of @GustavMattias Jerry Garcia runs a tight ship and if you don't get in line he will let you know about it.

SB: Was working under Mr. Garcia really that bad?

TB: No it was honestly incredible he will appreciate that joke. Honestly the bloke is a superstar as a GM, I can see him being poached by a VHL team soon enough as his great planning and locker room maintenance would honestly take the VHL by storm. I could see him winning multiple cups in his first few seasons as GM.

SB: Well thank you for sitting down with me and I wish you the best of luck in your role.

TB: Thank you Steve appreciate it.

And there you have it folks the first Australian to be a GM of a VHLM team can you believe it. This is Steven Brockman signing of on AOSN.

This was requested by @studentized who does way more work for these than I do - this is what I get for doing an actual work-intensive article rather than a stream of consciousness like I usually do. Work gets rewarded by requests for more work, but hey it's points right?

Prague: The percentages of Stansson, Grimaldi, Perrin, Dredge, Frobe, Wallace, Perry, McGirr, and Schweitzer add up to 401.07, divided by 9 is 44.56%
New York: Flowers, Eller, Guy, Elmebeck, Nolan, Sage, Grim, Yamazuki, Walker, Martell, Connors, Knight: 384.85, divided by 12 is 32.07%
Moscow: Bernard, Petrovic, Foilen, Telker, Armstrong, Dingle: 294.88, divided by 6 is 49.15%
DC: Valentino, Claude, Johnson, Kidd, Hooper, Rooney, Buster, Blackthorn, Ritchie: 388.3, divided by 9 is 43.14%
Calgary: Lehtinen, Gunnar, Flashsback, Steve, Ohradka, Chism: 215.08, divided by 6 is 35.85%
Malmo: Adrienne, Wright, Stronk: 130, divided by 3 is 43.33%
Seattle: Underyew, MacBurn, Rushmore, Sakic: 77.89, divided by 4 is 19.47%
Davos: Ross, Wang, Bennett: 88.05, divided by 3 is 29.35%
Toronto: Alex: 1.03, divided by 1 is 1.03%
Riga: Tates, Busser, Hunter, Gilbert, Kramer: 170.23, divided by 5 is 34.05%
Helsinki: Harris: 0, divided by 1 is 0% (good thing it wasn't divided by 0)
Vancouver: Downey, Bolonee, Eastwood: 105.78, divided by 3 is 35.26%

So the order of the averages:
    Moscow in 1st with 49.15
    Prague in 2nd with 44.56
    Malmo in 3rd with 43.33
    DC in 4th with 43.14
    Calgary in 5th with 35.85
    Vancouver in 6th with 35.26
    Riga in 7th with 34.05
New York in 8th with 32.07
    Davos in 9th with 29.35

Elmebeck reacted to diamond_ace in Steals by Percentages; S68 draft
The Season 68 draft, the first draft to include the two expansion teams, was also a draft where the values now vary wildly from the values at the time of the draft. There were some players in the first round that seemed to be great picks at the time, and have now turned out to be significantly worse than expected. There were also players very late on that have been much higher values than they were originally expected to be. This will be (shockingly) an article where I actually do research (gasp!) and find out the steals, the busts, and everything in between compared to expectation. It'll be a relatively simple bit of math - what percentage of the player's current TPE has been earned after the draft? Strictly TPE, not TPA, I don't care if they've banked.

    Round 1:
Condor Adrienne - 797 now, 433 at draft, 45.67% of TPE earned since draft
Lance Flowers - 693 now, 365 at draft, 47.33% of TPE earned since draft
Thorny Underyew - 356 now, 313 at draft, 12.08% of TPE earned since draft
Jeff Downey - 647 now, 305 at draft, 52.86% of TPE earned since draft
Luciano Valentino - 646 now, 297 at draft, 54.02% of TPE earned since draft
Frans Eller - 294 now, 290 at draft, 1.36% of TPE earned since draft
Teemu Lehtinen Jr - 373 now, 292 at draft, 21.72% of TPE earned since draft
A Red Guy - 632 now, 270 at draft, 57.28% of TPE earned since draft
Fredrik Elmebeck - 544 now, 252 at draft, 53.68% of TPE earned since draft
Samuel Ross - 311 now, 233 at draft, 25.08% of TPE earned since draft
Raymond Bernard - 609 now, 265 at draft, 56.49% of TPE earned since draft
Wolf Stansson Jr - 529 now, 287 at draft, 45.75% of TPE earned since draft

So the first round has a lot of people between about 45 and 55, which is great for this stage of the draft. People who were heavy earners before the draft can't really have gotten that high of a percentage, so you want a player who has earned about as much since the draft as before. There are, however, four players who've fallen well off the mark: Samuel Ross, with only 25.08% of his TPE earned since the draft, Teemu Lehtinen Jr, with 21.72%, Thorny Underyew, with 12.08%, and the worst of all, Frans Eller with only just over a single percent.

    Round 2:
Owen Nolan - 614 now, 262 at draft, 57.33% of TPE earned since draft
Kaspars Claude - 304 now, 237 at draft, 22.04% of TPE earned since draft
Bruce Grimaldi - 185 now, 176 at draft, 4.86% of TPE earned since draft
Micha Sage - 303 now, 266 at draft, 12.21% of TPE earned since draft - RETIRED
Seabass Perrin - 520 now, 200 at draft, 61.54% of TPE earned since draft
Ricky Johnson - 430 now, 200 at draft, 53.49% of TPE earned since draft
Willie Dredge - 450 now, 224 at draft, 50.22% of TPE earned since draft
Sigard Gunnar - 499 now, 265 at draft, 46.89% of TPE earned since draft
Jeff Tates - 319 now, 184 at draft, 42.32% of TPE earned since draft - RETIRED
Aamon Grim - 238 now, 197 at draft, 17.23% of TPE earned since draft
Finnegan MacBurn - 200 now, 174 at draft, 13.00% of TPE earned since draft
Jerry Wang - 370 now, 137 at draft, 62.97% of TPE earned since draft
Balentine Kidd - 302 now, 171 at draft, 43.38% of TPE earned since draft
Fang Flashback - 291 now, 179 at draft, 38.49% of TPE earned since draft - RETIRED

The second round starts to have a lot more wild variance. The first round basically if you didn't miss entirely, your player was fine (or in the case of New York, even if you missed once, your other three players were fine). In the second, some of the players have already retired, a few more have gone inactive, and we even see the first two players breach the 60% threshold (Seabass Perrin of Prague with the best combo of percentage and pure TPE we've seen so far, and Jerry Wang of Vancouver, formerly of Davos, with the best percentage). Again, anyone in the 40s or 50s has done just fine for their teams, excluding retired players and the now-inactive Balentine Kidd who was low enough at the time that his percentage could afford to rise before he left.

    Round 3:
Gert B Frobe - 323 now, 210 at draft, 34.98% of TPE earned since draft
Andrej Petrovic - 278 now, 166 at draft, 40.29% of TPE earned since draft
Ryan Busser - 405 now, 186 at draft, 54.07% of TPE earned since draft
Killy Foilen - 329 now, 137 at draft, 58.36% of TPE earned since draft
Mac Hooper - 297 now, 165 at draft, 44.44% of TPE earned since draft
Nate Telker - 381 now, 127 at draft, 66.67% of TPE earned since draft
Ryo Yamazuki II - 378 now, 200 at draft, 47.09% of TPE earned since draft
David Wallace - 250 now, 137 at draft, 45.20% of TPE earned since draft - RETIRED
Jaxon Walker - 278 now, 161 at draft, 42.09% of TPE earned since draft
Tony Bolonee - 342 now, 161 at draft, 52.92% of TPE earned since draft
Liam Rooney - 202 now, 149 at draft, 26.24% of TPE earned since draft
Jacob Perry - 433 now, 164 at draft, 62.12% of TPE earned since draft

Much like the second round, the third round has a bit of a range, but there are more players who are kind of in the middle. Hooper and Rooney are inactive (both of DC's picks) - if you take a step over to our other expansion team, Prague covers the entire range; one retired player in Wallace, one decent earner in Frobe, and one massive steal in Perry. Speaking of Perry, he and Nate Telker of Moscow join Perrin and Wang in the 60% plus club. In fact, in terms of pure TPE, Perry is only lower than 4 of the second rounders, and Telker plus Ryan Busser and Ryo Yamazuki II (at 381/405/378) are only lower than 5.

    Round 4:
Alyxander Hunter - 208 now, 171 at draft, 17.79% of TPE earned since draft
Chad Gilbert - 273 now, 192 at draft, 29.67% of TPE earned since draft
Nate Wright - 271 now, 102 at draft, 62.36% of TPE earned since draft
Roadkill Steve - 250 now, 127 at draft, 49.20% of TPE earned since draft
Justin Rushmore - 159 now, 157 at draft, 1.26% of TPE earned since draft
Ondrej Ohradka - 279 now, 115 at draft, 58.78% of TPE earned since draft
Alex Armstrong - 131 now, 51 at draft, 61.07% of TPE earned since draft
Block Buster - 320 now, 147 at draft, 54.06% of TPE earned since draft - RETIRED
Case Martell - 153 now, 152 at draft, 0.65% of TPE earned since draft
Joakim Sakic - 194 now, 94 at draft, 51.55% of TPE earned since draft
Julian Blackthorn - 86 now, 74 at draft, 13.95% of TPE earned since draft
Ben McGirr - 286 now, 86 at draft, 69.93% of TPE earned since draft

Round 4 has a lot of people who are inactive - this is a round where the percentages really do tell the story. Anyone higher than 40 is still at least semi-active, with the exception of the retired Block Buster. Ben McGirr is the first player to nearly catch the 70% barrier, and in fact, when I plugged that into the calculator I was surprised to see it come out on that end of said barrier. He joins Armstrong, Wright, and the players mentioned in earlier rounds in the 60% plus club. Armstrong is still floating around despite only having 131 TPE, ideally for Moscow he'll pick it up a bit but he still has a better chance of eventually making it than the players who are fully inactive. Outside of the retired Buster, McGirr is now the highest TPE in the round, although Ohradka and Wright are both in the same range (as is Gilbert, but he's inactive).

    Round 5:
Jason Connors - 147 now, 117 at draft, 20.41% of TPE earned since draft
Mike Van Stronk - 132 now, 103 at draft, 21.97% of TPE earned since draft
Bud Knight - 227 now, 163 at draft, 28.19% of TPE earned since draft
Beau Bennett - 137 now, 137 at draft, 0% of TPE earned since draft
Ryan Dingle - 50 now, 44 at draft, 12.00% of TPE earned since draft
Ryan Chism - 105 now, 105 at draft, 0% of TPE earned since draft - RETIRED
Benson Kramer - 163 now, 120 at draft, 26.38% of TPE earned since draft
Alex - 97 now, 96 at draft, 1.03% of TPE earned since draft - RETIRED
Keith Harris - 87 now, 87 at draft, 0% of TPE earned since draft
Cameron Eastwood - 70 now, 70 at draft, 0% of TPE earned since draft
Raleigh Ritchie - 313 now, 73 at draft, 76.68% of TPE earned since draft
Lukas Schweitzer - 68 now, 50 at draft, 26.47% of TPE earned since draft - RETIRED

Let's get the obvious out of the way now: one of these things is not like the others. Raleigh Ritchie is the first and only player to break the 70% barrier. This, of course, minorly annoys me as I was messaging Danger Golding on Discord from around the Harris pick, waiting for him to fall to my pick, only to see him go one spot earlier. It happens though, and such is the nature of drafts. Schweitzer is at least around as a member, although now as Aleksandra Olsen. Additionally, Bud Knight popped back up last week, and may just eke out enough to make the VHL after all.

    Top 10:
    Raleigh Ritchie 76.68%
    Ben McGirr 69.93%
    Nate Telker 66.67%
    Jerry Wang  62.97%
    Nate Wright 62.36%
    Jacob Perry 62.12%
    Seabass Perrin 61.54%
    Alex Armstrong 61.07%
    Ondrej Ohradka 58.78%
    Killy Foilen 58.36%

    Prague x3, Moscow x3, DC x1, Davos x1, Malmo x1, Calgary x1.

They say that only thing better than waiting for the draft with your pants on is waiting for the draft without any pants on, to that I can only say - It´s true, it´s more fun without pants on, but unfortunately I have to keep my pants on, since there is a fair possibility that I have to walk up to the stage after they call my name. That is right, I have been invited and I´m going to the draft event! Perhaps the most exciting day of my young hockey career so far, never been drafted before.

Tough to predict where and when I could be picked, some reports suggest that I could be picked somewhere in the first two rounds, but a lot depends on what kind of players the teams are looking for, I have some tools in my toolbox that might not be what teams are looking for and cant underestimate the fact that I have set my goal to play in the big show as early as possible, I want to play in VHL and compete against the best players in the world.

I still have a lot of work to do though and that is my only goal for the upcoming season, work hard and show that I have what it takes to play in VHL!
