? It's the most wonderful time of the year ?PLAYOFF HYPE IS HERE!

*as always, don't forget to click the underlined hyperlinks for more information where needed

    1. Holy moly, we've got three games left at time of publishing, and we've got a 5 point lead for the Prime Minister's Cup. What was the biggest factor in our league-leading regular season?

    2. Along with the end of the regular season comes the end of regular season awards eligibility. Which award do you want to be considered for, and why?

    3. If you aren't planning on winning any awards, nominate someone from our team for an individual award.

    4. There's a significant gap between the 7th and 8th place teams. With the PM's Cup, we'll draw #8 Philadelphia Reapers. What's the key to winning a series with Philly?

    5. Philly has a historically elite goalie having a historically elite VHLM season. How the heck do we solve John Poremba?

    6. How will you reset after the regular season to prepare yourself for a long playoff run?

    Players:

1). Defense. That and goal tending. We have been really stellar at times when we shut other teams down completely.

2). I'm not sure I would win any, I can think of numerous players in each category that deserve the award more than me.

3). Matty Socks for DOTY. Incredible season.

4). Shutting them out completely. They don't have an offense, so locking them down will ensure victory.

5). Shots, shots, and more shots.

6). Eat more wheaties, and remind myself every game is an absolute battle.

    Miami Presser: TRADE DEADLINE EDITION

    1. Management has been busy this year, drafting tons of active players and trading players in and out of the organization. Which Miami trade made this season do you think was the best for our franchise?

    2. Last year, we had a pretty quiet TDL because we were hot and didn't want to mess with chemistry. In the midst of another ? HOT ? season, should we be looking to tinker with the lineup?

    3. No team in the VHLM is perfect (but damn we're close) - what do you see as Miami's biggest need that can be addressed at a Trade Deadline?

    4. Start a VHLM Trade Deadline Rumour.

    5. If you were traded this week, which team would you want to be traded to?

    6. If you weren't traded this week, you're stuck with Miami for the rest of the season. Where do you see us finishing now that we've (bolstered our team / stayed pat) at the deadline?

1). The Juulita trade, cleared some roster room, moved them to a location to score more, and gave Miami some picks.

2). Just find what has been working well all season and keep that going.

3). Work on improving our special teams in a way, it seems that those are our only true weakness (if you can even call it that).

4). Miami offloads a package deal of 1 defenseman and a winger to get a 1st round for next year and more picks.

5). Oof that's a tough one. I think honestly Philadelphia, I had a good time with the reapers and wouldn't mind going back there if I was traded.

6). We could feasibly win it all, or at least make it to the finals.

  3. Since a team was announced here as an expansion team, I figured I'd add my own to the mix to balance out the conferences if an expansion were to occur. It took awhile to create but I think it's complete.

    Week Ending 8/16

    1.  Miami was recently blown out by the Houston Bulls 7-2. What did you take away from that game and how will we play better down the stretch?

    2. This week is VHL Theme Week! What do you plan to do to get the bonus 6 uncapped TPE?

    3. Next Monday is the Trade Deadline. Which players or what positions do you think we should take a look at?

    4. If you could choose any superpower to use for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?

    5. Do you have any pre-game rituals?

    6. How do you think we will perform in our games leading up until the playoffs? What do you think we have to do to take our game to the next level?

1). We just need to keep our heads on straight and play our game. We had a hot streak early, so the potential is there. Just gotta keep working at it.
2). Create a graphic and description for my future prospect, Alex Moran.
3). We have plenty of talent, I think what we may want to do is offload a forward to get Miami a solid draft pick for next season. It would keep the team competitive next season if they can net a high talent in the next draft.
4). Mind reading. That or time travel.
5). I'll put on my lower half of my gear, step out and stand by the boards near the ice and tape my stick.
6). I think we may struggle for a little bit more, lot's of good teams to face. But I think if we maintain our TPE earnings and really get our chemistry going we will start winning again.

    G - ALEX MORAN #7

After completing his improbable college career at Blue Mountain State, it was a shame to see Alex Moran's name not called in the NFL draft. Although not entirely disappointed, he has decided to strap on his goalie gear once again and play some beer league hockey to pass the time. After a few seasons, and a dominating performance against a bunch of drunk older guys, he may consider stepping into the career of a VHL goalie. That is, if he can prove that he can actually play hockey.

Nice positioning on the logo, sucks the jersey color is a totally different color though. Good choice of background and logo fade but with it so big it doesn't leave much room for the rest of the picture (might do better without). Not a fan of the small and dark VHL logo, might as well add the grey:vhllogo:and it'd match the much brighter upper deck logo (you could even change the text to black for that too). Centered text is well done and looks like it matches the logo, think this is my favorite part for sure! Lastly, the border around the outside could go, just noticed it after taking another look lol. Overall I'd give it.. 7/10

I appreciate the constructive criticism! Thanks for reviewing!

Big ups to @IamMOOSE for the presser last week - he'll keep up that great work as he AGMs his new team too!

    1) The VHLM standings are divvied clearly into two tiers. We lead the CONTENDERS tier with 42P, but the 7th place team has 35P and there are six teams nipping on our heels. Now that we're about a third of the way through the season, what can we do to separate from the pack?

    2) Our 2 OTLs lead the league, and we haven't won a game that extended past 60 mins. Why have we struggled to close games out in sudden death?

    3) Last season, the Marauders dragged the top-seeded Minnesota Storm to Game 7 of round one. Now that we've seen some of what the Beast of the East can do, what are your expectations or hopes for S73 playoffs?

    4) At some point, the trade deadline will sneak up on us. What should management do at the Trade Deadline to improve our team?

    5) Which bubble hockey do you prefer: bubble hockey or hockey in a bubble?

    6) I've been out of the VHL loop a bit this summer - what's your early contender for Graphic of the Year or Media Spot of the Year?

    Players:

1). We keep working hard and earning TPE to solidify ourselves as leaders in the league. With our solid offensive core and defensive backbone, we should be set to continue to win.
2). Depending on our overtime strategies, we may need to switch gears. If we are focusing offensively, maybe operating a defensive approach would benefit us or vice versa.
3). With this squad, I would be shocked if we didn't make it to the finals. My goal however is to hoist the cup at the end of it all.
4). I really doubt there is much we can do to better our team more than what we have now. If anything, and I know this isn't ideal for keeping people, but the Miami Marauders have no first round draft picks next year. With this squad, it could prove beneficial to trade away a player to obtain some draft capital. I'd hate to see it but it would help the Marauders be competitive again next year.

5). Bubble hockey. Yeah hockey in a bubble could be great with all the things catered to you but you miss out on family, fans, and being able to get away from it all. It's tough to compare that to a bubble hockey tournament with friends or family, beers, pizza or food, and just having a good time together.
6). The S73 VHL Mock draft by advantage. That was very well done with a lot of information that set it much higher than other media spots.

could you maybe do a card for my pal and our former teammate Jer Lefebvre (His render is Mackinnon)? he has since been traded to Minnesota and i know he would love and really appreciate your work :)

Sure! It might take a little bit, I’m at the tail end of moving across the USA, but I’ll get it done as soon as I can!

With management busy, I offered to help out with the press conference this week. Hope it's good for you guys. Here it is for the week of 7/27/2020-08/02/2020

    1.    Miami began the season 9-0-1, a phenomenal start. How do you feel the team has lived up to the expectations set by many so far and how does the current start reflect your expectations for Miami this season?

    2.    How satisfied are you with your player’s start to this season? What are your expectations as the season rolls on?

    3.    A lot has been said about Miami as the Evil, the Heels of the M. Ten games in, how do you feel about that perception now?

    4.    To bridge into the last few questions here; What part of your player’s game are you most focused on aside from SC and DF?

    5.    If you could pick one skill that could be more effective in the sim, what would it be?

    6.    With 16 teams in the VHL and 12 in the M, there’s plenty of space for more new members. With what took place with recruitment recently, what suggestions would you give to the recruiters of this league on how to attract new faces?

1). We are the league leader in points, I thing things are going very well regarding both outside expectations and my own.

2). Very satisfied. Grachev is playing well defensively and has a few assists already. It might not show up in stats but being able to shut down opposing teams is a great feeling.

3). We definitely feel like the big bad evil guys, and I don’t mind that one bit.

4). Passing and Puck handling. I want to get those up to 75 or 80 before I cap out at 250 TPE.

5). Skating, I’d love to see how someone with a high skating stat could just blow right by people and score on breakaways in the game log and actually have it say something like: ***** gets the puck in the neutral zone. Breakaway. ***** SCORES.

6). I feel like we need a bigger social media presence and a more polished network. The fact that drafts and events take place on individual twitch streams that are hard to access unless you look on discord is a little tough. Some people can’t be on discord 24/7. An instagram page exists but it’s the bare minimum. What about a VHL Twitch account? Or a subreddit on reddit where we can just link the subreddit to posts that we are targeting for recruitment? Even improving the Instagram page or a twitter page to post links to game scores would be great; it would give those players the ability to feel like a part of the league even without being on discord.

  10. No, I’m unfortunately not talking about the Will Ferrell movie conveniently sharing the same name as this article. What I’m referring to are the players currently in the VHLM who may not be the superstars of their teams or leading their teams in scoring/points. I’m talking about those individuals on the ice that consistently benefit their team even though they may not score a lot or garnish their stats with a lot of assists. I’ve poured through quite a number of games over the past couple of days and looked at plays that happen during them as well as stat lines that show how valuable certain players are. So without further ado, here are a few of those players that I want to highlight.

    1. Gabriel Johnson - D (81 TPE) @GeckoeyGecko

    • Playing only on the 3rd Defensive pair for Houston, I am extremely impressed with Johnson’s +/- ratio of 10, which is 2nd overall for defensemen and 4th overall on Houston. And that’s only out of 11 games played. They may not have the offensive tenacity like some of their teammates, but they focus primarily on defense which has allowed them to support their team and help carry Houston to a high placement in the VHLM standings.

    2. Angel Wachiure - LW (92 TPE) @inflastud

    • While running only on the 3rd forward line as well as the 2nd power play and 2nd 3PK unit, Angel has put up an impressive 10 points in 11 games (5G, 5A). Although only 5th in points scored on the team, they average only 16.75 minutes compared to the 21-25 minutes or so of the top liners in Las Vegas. With that lower amount of playing time, Angel continues to contribute offensively when it really matters.

    3. Eoin Byrne - D (118 TPE) @LatinViking

    • Primarily playing on the 3rd and 4th line D pairing as well as PK work in both 4 player and 3 player formats, Byrne holds a 13 +/- ratio which is tied for 3rd best in Miami. Similar to Johnson, Byrne doesn’t hold the offensive production seen amongst his teammates but contributes considerably on defense. Also seen as a great locker room presence, Byrne is a valuable piece to a loaded Miami roster this season.

    4. Riley Couture - C (78 TPE) @Riley_Couture

    • The 2nd line, 2nd PK, and 2nd 4v4 center playing just under 20 minutes a game is producing a great number of assists for his team. Although they don’t have any goals yet this season with other players on the team accumulating more points, Couture has 8 assists which is tied for 2nd overall amongst all of the players on Saskatoon. Additionally, they have the second best +/- ratio of 8 on the team. They have proven themselves to be an important cog in the Saskatoon team this season, even with a lower playing time than the top players.

    5. Michael Olson - G (85 TPE) @MSO94

    • For a goalie, especially one just starting out earlier this month, Olson’s stats may not tell the full picture. They hold an 0.875 SV% and 5.56 GAA as their stat line. However, considering where Olson is playing, the picture begins to show their true colors. Mexico City sits 3rd to last in the VHLM this season. They don’t have a single defenseman that is not a bot on their roster. That porous defense has allowed 500 shots total on net in 11 games, of which Olson has faced 456 (avg. of 41.45 per game). Even with those aspects, somehow Olson has 1 shutout already and 3 wins under his belt. Considering the situation Mexico City is in, I am extremely impressed with some of Olson’s hidden stat lines so far.

So there you have it: 2 forwards, 2 defensemen, and a goalie that I feel deserve some spotlight even if they aren’t the best on their respective teams at the moment. Without them, I feel that their VHLM teams would be suffering a little bit more considering these players’ impacts. I hope to do this again a few times this season, especially to highlight some newer players that join later this season!

Although this is considerably longer than the word requirement for a VHL.com article, I’ve already put up a graphic for this week and am in the midst of moving across the USA, plus I really wanted to get this idea done. ??‍♂️

Hey I like this sig, I'll review it too!

I absolutely dig the player render, the whole simplistic jersey color scheme and a nice clean logo swap.  Very classic and books very neat.

The gray background is a nice touch, if it was layered transparent over some kind of out of focus rink setting it would be more impactful.

The upper deck, VHLM logo and that signature are all bonus points for me.  Give the card a real look-and feel.

I do get the idea (judging by above response) that the red detailed square is "jersey fabric", however it does kinda look a bit out of place.  I dont get the UD Jersey part either, perhaps enlighten me?

What would have made this sig cool is some kind of classic border, and some "draft class" Upper Deck edition, boosting its value in some kind of trading community.  Points for imagination.

    Overall score: 9.5/10

Minus points for the background, no border and the square thingy.

Thank you for the review! So here’s another actual card that has the UD Game Jersey aspect that I was trying to base this off of:

    image.jpeg.6dc138dd9abc5e2a0945414ba12035e8.jpeg

Love the idea of a classic border and something like a transparent rink layer behind the player, I may try that on a future card! Thanks again!

Hellooooo, I'm here for a review!!!!!!

The autograph is a nice touch. The background with team name is neat, but the white makes it look kind of plain. Would maybe recommend changing that from white, maybe to grey? Overall appreciate the vibe, but don't really understand the red square?? Maybe I'm missing something but that's definitely better than just leaving it black. Overall, nice job, and would gladly have Socks in this uniform. 7.5/10!

Thanks for the review! Just to clarify, the red square is a piece of a jersey kind of like how some hockey cards today contain pieces of the player's jersey. I appreciate the criticism though, gives me more to improve upon for next time!

  13. 1). With the fantasy leagues beginning again, who makes up your top lineup for this season?

2). Everyone asks who to look out for in the VHL or who is the best. For you guys, who is someone that is a staple to their team even without the best point production or stats?

3). What are some ways you all feel the VHL can improve in the next few seasons? Any feature you would love to see added in, removed, or tweaked?
