gregreg reacted to NickSunderbruch in Nick's Picks #7 ROTY Race is heating up
So I recently did an article where I highlighted players most likely to win rookie of the year, and since then the standings in points have changed. While I'm quite aware that points alone aren't what earn you the award, It's still the best way to judge where someone may go at face value. So take a bit of what I'm saying here with a grain of salt as it's still anyones race. Last time I brought this topic up, Sunderbruch and Ryhnex were tied for first place on the leaderboard. Rhynex has since pulles ahead to first, however Sunderbruch closesly tails. In fact as of now the top three on the leaderboard are all Las Vegas Ace's Allumni. So lets take a look at the top 5 on this leaderboard and look at their chances to win ROTY.

    1. Rhynex Entertainment @Rhynex Entertainment
19 goals, 30 assists for 49 points in 42 games.
Rhynex plays on a bottom of the standings team in the New York Americans, and while he's their point leader it's important to look at why.
Rhynex is leading his team in scoring, and in TPA, he's at 419 TPA as of writing this while the second highest TPA is 391 in Gary Rush.
This man is an absolute beast, he lead the VHLM with the most assists last season, and is still tearing it up even in the majors.
I'd persnally say he's a solid pick for the award, but again it's still anyones game on this list, if he slips he has many hungry players behind him ready to take his place. out of ten I'd give him a 9/10 for the award.

    2. Nicholas Sunderbruch I cant tag myself
17 goals, 26 assists for 43 points in 43 games.
Sunderbruch is playing up to the hype, he's playing on the Toronto Legion who are in a rebuilding situation right now.
Despite being in a rebuilding situation there's quite a few talented players on this team, many who are young, and a few veterans.
Nicholas is at 331 TPA as of writing this, and that's quite impressive that he's performing at this level with around 80 TPA less than Rhynex.
No one thought this kid would be here, but here he is, making a splash and staying at a point per game pace.
However there's a reason he's number two here and that's because he's not putting up as impressive of a season as Rhynex.
I'd have to say out of ten I'd give him an 8/10 to win ROTY.

    3. Gary Rush @G_Rush
21 goals, 19 assists for 40 points in 42 games.
Rush is probaby the most underrated rookie this season, I'd say that being 391 TPA and still keeping nearly a point per game, while also playing with the top rookie on the same line is very impressive. Gary is a beast who know's only how to score goals and do what it takes to get the W.
While he's absolutely impressive and likely underrated, if you've followed his carreer in the minors, this is no surprise.
Gary is on the pace to score nearly 40 goals in his rookie season, which is absolutely bonkers.
I'd say that he's a candidate for ROTY but he's not a frontrunner if things stay how they are.
I'd give him a 6/10 to win ROTY.

    4. L @gorlab(god I love his name)
8 goals, 32 assists for 40 points in 41 games.
L is a great defenseman and I'm gonna look at a few more of his stats as he's not a forward like the rest of the list.
He's blocked 112 shots, and registered 117 hits, and 74 penalty minutes.
Impressive stats for sure, but when you think about it, he's a 29 year old man competing with 18 year olds.
L is contending, but just barely. However he's on course for a 60 assist season, and that's crazy.
He's also sitting comfortably in a playoff spot with the Chicago Phoenix. I'd say he's got a good chance of snagging this.
I'd also give him a 6/10 to win the ROTY.

    5. Leo Strauss @gregreg
14 goals, 23 assists for 37 points in 43 games.
Leo is a great player, playing on a line with Merrick who is in the top ten in points overall.
Playing on the same line as a player like that it's no wonder your stats might suffer compared to the secondary scoring lines.
He's absolutely been playing like a beast this season, and its great to see him do so well in Toronto where we're happy to have him.
I'd have to give him a 5/10 to win the award though. He's good but he's not quite competing compared to others on the list.

That does it for another spicy article, where I keep watching stats everyday hoping I can make an interesting article for the week. I hope this filled your bellies for the week kiddos because I'm gonna take a two day nap. Thank's for reading, stay Icey, Seacrest out.

The Rookie Experience with Leo Strauss

We caught up with Toronto Legion rookie Leo Strauss following his first 25 games in the VHL to see how he was adjusting to the big leagues and being in a big market like Toronto.

Reporter: Leo, this season you have made the jump to a VHL regular, what has that transition been like for you?

Leo: It has been a lot smoother than I thought it was going to be. My time in the VHLM wasn’t great and it tested me a lot. I was on two different teams down in the VHLM and I can’t say I enjoyed either team. I never played first line minutes, never got to play my natural position in centre and never seem to click with the teammates I had. But I plugged away knowing that it was just a stepping stone. I joined Toronto after getting traded by Seattle in the off-season and I took that chance to reset. I walked into Toronto with an open mind ready to prove that I was ready for the VHL. So far I’ve gotten along with everyone, the GM has a great plan in place and the locker room has been amazing. Making the transition a lot easier for me.

Reporter: Let’s talk about this season then, You have come in and been placed on the first line wing and also were given an “A”. What are your expectation for the rest of this season and for the rest of your career?

Leo: Getting the opportunity to not only play with great players but too also get to be a leader on a young team like this is huge. I’m only really a view games into my career but showing I can be a top line guy this season is going to help. I’m currently just under a point per game and that’s where I’d like to be my entire career. A point per game player that can help teams win. Toronto has a great future and I’m glad to be apart of it for now and the long term. I just want to continue to get better and I can say that I’ve made huge strides in my short time in Toronto.

Reporter: One last question for you Leo, your dad was a HOF player does the pressure to be him ever effect you?

Leo: Look no one can be my dad, he was a great player for a long time in the VHL and right now I’m just trying to be me. I hope to be close to as good as he was one day but for now I just take it a day at a time.

gregreg reacted to NickSunderbruch in Nicholas Sunderbruch top rookie?
Last week I wrote an article where I may or may not have been a little mean to the mods, and also said I was a little let down by the stats that Nicholas was putting up. However in a week many things can change, I now want the mods to like me, and Sunderbruch is tied with @Rhynex Entertainmentfor first place on the rookie leaderboards in points. I want to say before we begin with this article today, that stats change DAILY, and the title of rookie of the year could go to essentially anyone, however the trends do show some big names toward the top.

The top five in the rookie category this season has some faces I'm very familiar with, in order on the portal it goes like this

         1. Nicholas Sunderbruch: 17 gp, 21 points
         2. Rhynex Entertainment: 17 gp, 21 points
         3. Kasper Kakkunen: 16 gp, 17 points
         4. Leo Strauss: 17 gp, 15 points
         5. Gary Rush: 17 gp, 15 points

If any of you remember these names I wouldn't be surprised, as these four of these players played for the Vegas Aces last season, and two of them play for the Toronto Legion this season. Nicholas has made a name for himself amongst the fans in Toronto for his spectacular goals, he moves the puck in ways that defenders and goalies alike can't understand. And his stats so far really show that. In Toronto he's even been dubbed with the nickname, "The Florida Man" as he's known for going for crazy plays, like using the boards to pass to himself or his linemates for some pretty spectacular goals. I wouldn't say that Nicholas is the most talented rookie in the league though, as some of the other on this list are competing for minutes with players that have been in the big leagues longer, And in an interview with the young Legion player, this is what he had to say:

Interviewer: So with your numbers being as good as they are this season, do you think you could be bringing home some hardware this year?
Nicholas: I mean I definitely could, but that all depends, Rhynex is probably my biggest rival this year, but he's also someone I consider a close friend. So I think it's anyones game this year.
Interviewer: Do you think that maybe the reason your numbers are so high is because of Peace's decision to split up icetime evenly for all the players?
Nicholas: Oh absolutely, there have been times where I wouldn't have scored a goal, or gotten that apple without having those extended shifts or extra shifts.
Interviewer: Thank you so much for your time, glad to hear from you
Nicholas: No problem, just make sure to interview more people from time to time, I mean it's as simple as reaching out to other people on the forums or on discord for an interview, I mean these articles are just essentially you talking about yourse... Mic Cuts Off

Now that we've gotten the meta jokes for the article out of the way, we can start looking at some of the other players that are doing a great job this season, first I want to look at Rhynex's stats, and we'll go over the top five list briefly as to not pad the article anymore than I already am. Rhynex Entertainment has put up 7 goals, and 14 assists for his 21 points this season with a -2 overall in +/-. Next we have Kasper Kankkunen, he's put up 7 goals and 10 assists for a total of 17 points with a +/- of +10, which makes him a serious contender for ROTY. Next we have Leo Strauss, a locker room favorite in Toronto, he's put up 8 goals and 7 assists for a total of 15 points this season and a +/- of 0. And finally we have Gary Rush, who's raked in a solid 8 goals and 7 assists for a total of 15 points, and a +/- of -4.

I'm not sure if Nicholas will be able to take the final step and make ROTY, but he's absolutely a contender for the award, but there's so much talent that graced the VHL this year. But to put the icing on the cake, Nicholas was a late second round pick, picked at around 35th overall, and he was expected to go in the early 3rd round, Nicholas has absolutely been one of the biggest steals of the season 74 draft class. Anyways that's going to do it for this weeks long article, be on the lookout for my next VHL.com article where I make jokes and fart for everyones attention and laughter. Anyways I'm gonna go back to drinking a ton of eggnogg and getting drunk off my ass. Thank you all for the time, and stay icey, Seacrest out.
