Quik 4,113
One Season Later: Reviewing the S57 Draft One of the stronger drafts in recent memory Some Rural Town, Western Canada- Welcome to my review show! Here in VHL Headquarters, somewhere in @sterling's basement, we are taking a look at the Season 57 VHL Entry Draft, possibly the strongest draft in recent memory, producing as of today 13 active players, including 3 new members who look well on their way to leaving a lasting impression on the league! The last draft with a 10-team VHL, we will take a look at each pick made in the first round, as well as the four active 2nd round draft picks that are making a name for themselves in one way or another! At the end of this article, we will do a re-draft that takes into account team needs as of today (for the now defunct teams, we will go with what they most needed). Before we go into the analysis, let's take a look at the first round and the notables from the second round, along with their draft time TPE: Cologne Express: C - Chase Keller - 251 TPE @Kendrick New York Americans: D - Casey Jones - 186 TPE @der meister Stockholm Vikings: D - Boner - 225 TPE @Corco Quebec City Meute: D - Keaton Louth - 180 TPE @Beaviss HC Davos Dynamo: LW - Jeff Gow - 184 TPE @Fire Hakstol Toronto Legion: LW - Phil Bennington - 110 TPE @Phil Cologne Express: G - Shawn Brodeur - 196 TPE @TheLastOlympian07 New York Americans: D - Colton Rayne - 116 TPE @Spade18 HC Davos Dynamo: D - Ko Kane - 144 TPE @BluObieZ HC Davos Dynamo: RW - Matt Denning - 80 TPE @jvd New York Americans: C - Launchpad McQuack - 111 TPE @KGR Stockholm Vikings: D - Mats Johnsson - 181 TPE @Quik HC Davos Dynamo: RW - David Kiaskov - 79 TPE @Exlaxchronicles Stockholm Vikings (18th OVR): G - Norris Stopko - 179 TPE @Bushito The first thing you will notice is that there is only 6 teams with selections of note in this draft. That is because each of Calgary, Seattle and Riga traded the first and second round picks beforehand, and the Helsinki Titans only pick in the first two rounds was 15th overall, and used on a player whose last pension claim came on September 18th, a full two weeks prior to the draft. You will also notice that this draft was heavy on defensemen, with half of the first 12 picks being defenders. Since the draft, of the teams listed above, Cologne has been contracted from the league, and Stockholm has re-located to Calgary, so the only defunct franchise we will need to look at is Cologne. Anyways, as they say, onwards to the talking heads! We will now look at how the players have since progressed, and then have a quik look at what the draft rankings would look like if the players were being drafted today! 1st Overall: C - Chase Keller - 463 TPE Forget that the Express were run by possibly the worst General Manager the league could have hired, that he had a very volatile personality causing him to receive yet another lifetime ban, that the league had to scramble to find a suitable replacement, and that the Express have since been contracted from the league. Moving past all that, this was the easiest pick in the draft, as the Express took franchise center Chase Keller who has done nothing but deliver on his pre-draft hype. Going 1st overall in the Dispersal Draft to New York, Keller looks to become the best player of his generation in short order, primed to finish his sophomore season amongst the league leaders in goals and points. 2nd Overall: D - Casey Jones - 411 TPE Vince Wong @STZ must have known something at the time of the draft, as he passed on the higher rated Boner, who at the time led Jones by over 40 TPE and was a consistent league member, in order to select the player who is now an easy selection as the 2nd best player out of this draft. Jones is already among the league's top 2-way D-men and is clearly a franchise defender who will lead the upstart Americans from the back-end, along with Keller up front, for seasons to come! 3rd Overall: D - Boner - 320 TPE The Vikings were in real need of everything, going into the draft with their only physical asset being future GM Player Jasper Canmore, @Bushito was looking for the best possible assets, with no real regard for position at the time. With that in mind, he selected steadying presence Boner, whose agent @Corco has created many fine players in the past. Boner is Corco's P2, and as such may have suffered from a development standpoint, as he has not progressed nearly as much as many would expect from such a seasoned member. He is still a solid defender, and will be a serviceable player going forward, but his stalled progression may become an issue moving forward. 4th Overall: D - Keaton Louth - 364 TPE @Frank had a real trick up his sleeve, trading up to grab the first generation Keaton Louth, @Beaviss's first player in the league. Louth is a fantastic offensive defenseman who brings a physical edge along with a developing defensive game. Looking to the future, Louth is a defender that could be known as one of the best of his generation, along with an agent in Beaviss who is quickly becoming an extremely valuable asset in the VHL landscape. 5th Overall: LW - Jeff Gow - 270 TPE After losing Game 7 of the S56 Continental Cup Finals to Quebec, @Tyler decided to look to the future and trade off assets as the Dynamo would start their rebuild. One of the first assets introduced into that rebuild was @Fire Hakstol's Jeff Gow, a scoring winger with a history of solid players. Much like Boner, Gow's development seems to have come a bit slower than expected, as he is not at the point many would have hoped when looking at the promising forward. He has still developed decently, and time will tell if he can turn it around and become the elite sniper Tyler was expecting when he was drafted. Right now, he is a solid pick that looks to provide good depth to the Dynamo in the future. 6th Overall: LW - Phil Bennington - 190 TPE Once again, another legendary member's Project Player 2 comes up, and provides a glimpse at perhaps why that league project was scrapped. Again, we are still only entering the second season after these players' drafts, so there is always time to improve and change trajectory for these players, but right now it's very likely that @DollarAndADream is wishing he did not take the scrub that is @Phil Bennington! A Jack-of-All-Trades, Bennington looks to be repeating his time in the VHLM this upcoming season, hoping to gain enough seasoning to become a contributor to the Legion in the playoffs, or in S59. 7th Overall: G - Shawn Brodeur - 353 TPE Looking back, the Express coming out of S56 were a tire fire, and there were holes everywhere on their roster. New GM @ADV decided he wanted to build from the net out, and rather than risking @TheLastOlympian07 being selected before his next pick, 16 spots later, ADV decided to take the goalie he believed to be his goalie of the future. In a vacuum, Brodeur is a solid choice. He is well on his way to becoming one of the better goalies of the next generation, though he will have to wait as he still has plenty of developing to do, and a new roster in Davos that is still in the midst of a rebuild. 8th Overall: D - Colton Rayne - 277 TPE In the midst of a rebuild, the Americans were a team in need of everything, but there most glaring hole was on the blueline. They began to take care of that with Jones, and continued down that route with Colton Rayne. Rayne is the second 1st-Generation player to go in what would now fall as the first round (the top 8 picks). A solid stay-at-home defender, Rayne is developing solidly and will make a great #2 to Jones for seasons to come. 9th Overall: D - Ko Kane - 235 TPE Ah, the ever enigmatic @BluObieZ, who famously held out from playing in the VHLM, before finally caving in his draft-year to play for the Oslo Storm. A well known member who has managed several star players in the VHL, Robbie has been a very divisive member in the league, and normally I would say his being drafted this low had more to do with his relationships around the league than it did his player. However, this was a very deep draft and Tyler was lucky to get a player who looks well on his way to being a stabilizing shut-down defender in a #2/3 role. 10th Overall: RW - Matt Denning - 114 TPE The final pick of the first round, and 2nd of back-to-back picks for Tyler and Davos. We finally arrive at our first bust, as @jvd has not returned to the site in over a month now, and his player looks to become a career VHLMer. While looking for a forward to help build his team around, Tyler missed the mark as 2 of the following 3 picks were forwards who look to make impacts in the VHL moving forward! 11th Overall: C - Launchpad McQuack - 262 TPE With the Americans looking to take the BPA, GM Wong went with veteran member @KGR in hopes that the manager would keep his center active and productive. So far, that bet is looking solid, as KGR has continued to develop McQuack into a solid all-around center to anchor the team's 2nd line. Ever the Irishman, Wong has lucked into a second line consisting of sophomore McQuack, flanked by rookies Aksel McKnight and Kriztoff Mueller, and looks to be finished with his team's rebuild! 12th Overall: D - Mats Johnsson - 358 TPE By far the biggest riser in terms of draft position vs. true value today, Tyson Barabash lucked into his selection of Johnsson. As a recent returnee after nearly 4 years away from the league, GMs were wary of taking a flier on @Quik, especially as he had gone inactive in the weeks leading up to the draft. Sitting at 12th overall, and holding the 14th, 16th, 17th AND 18th picks as well, @Bushito took a gamble on the high TPE defender, hoping that he would return and become an asset for the rebuild. That gamble not only paid off, it looks to be the best value selection of the draft, as today Johnsson pushes Louth for the position of 4th highest draft TPE and 2nd best defender behind Jones. 13th Overall: RW - David Kiaskov - 159 TPE A perfect example of using draft picks as lottery tickets, @Exlaxchronicles is a pick that is developing quite nicely and looks to make an impact in the VHL as soon as S59! The third new member off the board, this drafts 1st-Generation players have yet to disappoint. Kiaskov is still a little rough around the edges, with no skills truly refined, but has time to work on his abilities and become a very solid contributor to the league! 18th Overall: G - Norris Stopko - 443 TPE A bit of an odd case, this selection came down largely to a case of circumstance. Prior to the draft, Barabash widely exclaimed that Stopko was a goalie created only to help his VHLM team, and would be retired once pre-season began for S57. This, in tandem with the saturated goalie market in the VHL, led to all other teams passing on the goaltender. With six picks in the 2nd round, Barabash was able to wait until the 18th pick before selecting his goaltender, and ultimately deciding to continue his career, while also adding GM Player Jasper Canmore, who will be a S58 rookie and is a leading contender for the Christian Stolzshweiger award as top rookie. There you have it, a review of the S57 VHL Entry Draft. The following is how the draft might play out if the rights to those picks remained the same, but the GMs had a look into how these players would look today, assuming teams take their needs into consideration: Cologne Express - C - Chase Keller - 463 TPE New York Americans - D - Casey Jones - 411 TPE Stockholm Vikings - D - Keaton Louth - 364 TPE Quebec City Meute - D - Mats Johnsson - 358 TPE HC Davos Dynamo - G - Shawn Brodeur - 353 TPE Toronto Legion - D - Colton Rayne - 277 TPE Cologne Express - D - Boner - 320 TPE New York Americans - C - Launchpad McQuack - 262 TPE HC Davos Dynamo - LW - Jeff Gow - 270 TPE HC Davos Dynamo - D - Ko Kane - 235 TPE New York Americans - LW - Phil Bennington - 190 TPE Stockholm Vikings - G - Norris Stopko - 443 TPE HC Davos Dynamo - RW - David Kiaskov - 159 TPE 2229 words at the conclusion of the re-draft, claiming for 4 weeks! Pretty much just a member who did a lot of things for attention, and went on a tirade attacking certain other members. He'd been banned years ago and then came back supposedly cleaning up his act, but it came through once again and the league had to ban him. 18 hours ago, Kendrick said: 1. Yup, in the part on your draft pick it says the league had to find a new GM. 20 hours ago, STZ said: Pay to win Yeah, over the course of a career, donations build up (especially if you create at the deadline, it can mean an extra 170 over the course of a full career). In the early parts, it isn't a huge difference, but it does still give an extra 51 TPE as early as entering their sophomore VHL season over non-donations. But there's also a ton of opportunities that people use to earn TPE. With a job, you're earning 9/week. Then there's uncapped opportunities like submitting trivia questions that get used, and recruiting, especially with the huge recruitment drive that happened with the 10th Anny... One thing I feel is that there's also less league-wide doubles weeks. I don't think there even was one this past season, which is weird. DollarAndADream 3,356
Review: This draft was pretty decent when you look at it now. Obviously, it had some big players like Keller and Jones, but it also had some great pick ups like Rayne and Louth. Solid draft. Good write-up!
