Will reacted to eaglesfan036 in Eaglesfan's Guide to Blending In As Town
So you have been assigned a role that is not town - either mafia, neutral, or coven. You may be a new player who wants to blend in with town, but has no idea what is going on. My best advice is not to just stay silent and hope you won't be noticed, because someone tries this every game and winds up being hung around day 3 or 4. Below is my simplistic solution to helping you blend in as town. As you become more familiar with the game there are a lot of different routes you can take, but if you have no idea where to start this will help.

    Step One:

Look up the investigator results for your role (make sure to look at the Coven Expansion DLC mode as that is the one we usually use). You will want to pretend to be a town role that is listed among your possible roles if an investigator looks at you. For example, if you are a mafioso and the investigator looks at you night one, he will see that you could be any of the following roles - Vigilante, Veteran, Mafioso, Pirate, or Ambusher. You will want to pick one of the town roles to blend in as (in this case vigilante or veteran). This way if you are later questioned and claim to be something else (say a medium), the investigator can call you out and say his results don't match.

    Step Two:

Create a fake will for the role you picked, with the easiest way to do it being creating your fake night action the morning after the night period. Try to follow the game thread to make sure your fake night actions cannot easily be shown false. For example, if you are crafting a fake will as a veteran, you want to try and make the nights you "alerted" make sense with the flow of the game. If you roleblocked on night one and jailed on night two, you should not pretend you alerted either of those nights, as that would easily call you out as a liar.

    Step Three:

Be adaptable. If you follow steps one and two it helps you avoid suspicious for at least the first few nights. However, let's revisit the scenario where you are mafioso. Let's pretend you have yet to claim a role, and someone announces they were the veteran who killed someone who visited them last night (how rude!). While you might have originally been planning to blend in as a veteran, you will probably not be successful doing that as veteran is a unique role that only one person can be. If you hadn't claimed a role up to this point, you could switch your claim to a vigilante as that is on your investigative results list, or be bold and pick a different role hoping the investigator doesn't look at you.

    Step Four:

If after a few days it appears there is no investigator, or the investigator died early on day one, you can freely pretend to be any role without fear of being called out by the investigator. Just make sure to have a good defense for why you were quiet if you had yet to reveal up to this point.

Hope this helps our new members blend in better as evils! Remember when in doubt, blend in as a town role on your investigative results and make a fake will!

Not much intros out there. Just little disclaimer before I'm naming my ''dream'' top 6. All of them but one are basically former Riga players who managed to pop out of the nowhere with the surprisingly good performance while having a low number of TPE. You know, I'm still having fond memories of Krīgars and his out of nowhere HoF performance. There's no doubt I started to like these kind of players and I was always watching them tearing opponents down although they weren't really supposed to do logically. All of them played during my tenure (so from mid S53).

    F - Codrick Past @Kylrad

And I'll start with the most recent player who just retired last season with his career best 88 points. With 460 TPA. Back then it wasn't a low number, but nowadays not having much TPE in competing team most likely gonna give you mid tier numbers at best. Not in Codrick's case for sure. He changed his position to forward once getting traded to Riga, but having 70 skating didn't do him much favors. After a mere 39 point season he followed by another one with the same number. However, he started to show a potential with taking more chances and also updating the skating skill. It resulted in a jump in points production to 68 and then he dropped 20 more in his farewell season despite losing more than 100 TPE in regression. I was a big fan of his playing style - a guy who is gonna shoot the puck every time he finds a chance, even in tough situations. And he for sure delivered in his last season so he finds himself on my list.

    F - Ryuu Crimson @SlapshotDragon

Now, he wasn't a superstar forward, but dropping 89 points in S65 while still being behind Cast and Edwin was a big deal. However, the reason I put him here is his S63 playoffs showdown. He started it pretty slowly and then a hat trick against Quebec happened. After that, he was just unstoppable. At the end of the playoffs he was the only plus player in Riga and most importantly, he is still the only player in history who won the Kanou trophy in his rookie season. And that's while having EdwinCast in a team plus more big and experienced players. That was a definition of ''out of nowhere'' performance and for that he also will find himself on my list.

    F - John Locke @Will

There could be a debate that I should've put Krīgars here instead, but at least I updated him. Locke in other case was staying at 440 TPE for a long time cause Draper was basically inactive by that time. So that makes his S57-58 performance even more impressive. There could be another debate about ''out of nowhere'' situation. Before being traded to Riga, Locke was already showing that he is a big thing in Quebec. But I'm not sure everyone expected him to score 131 goals in span of two seasons. That was the case when 40/90 build brought him to the elite level and eventually to hall of fame as well. A combination of his steady low TPE number and his two blow out the water seasons in Riga I'm putting him in this list as well. But hey, I'll also put Krīgars as the honorable mention because why not.

    D - Alexander Thrower @gregreg

Can't even copy paste quotes on this stupid PC, but:

''THROWER??? Inactive Greg is best Greg ever. Gawd lord'' - in courtesy of @Higgins. This was indeed a strange one and player itself was constantly doing out of nowhere things. I believe he never had more than 300 TPE yet he won two indivdual awards, one of them (Beketov) came during his time in Riga. He managed to finish his career with over 1 PPG as well despite puting only 27 points in his last season. He benefited a lot from Locke and Krīgars showdown, but all we are going to remember are stats (91 and 107 points with 95 of them being assists). And his numbers were really on point. He was traded to Riga in right time and he was put in right place in our lineup and for that he ends up on my list.

    D - Dragon McDragon @JardyB10

Speaking about unexpected results, how about Jardy's last player who never had more than early 200's TPE. Like Thrower he was in right place and right time. This time, it was EdwinCast duo that boosted stats in S62 for other as well, incuding McDragon. That 100 point season (90 of them were assists, close to Beketov award) was his peak and he never put up anything similar performance to this. But hey, he also won a championship a season later. But since we're covering up low TPE guys with mind blowing stats, the S62 stats line is the one that will put Dragon into this list.

I'd also put Guntis Petenis here for his S54 play which was pretty unexplainable, but he had 500+ TPE by that time so these two above made the cut before my own guy.

G - ...uhmm nobody? eh. Kallis Kriketers (yeah that's me)

There was no goalie during my tenure that was performing above their TPE level. Kopralkov...well I didn't remember much, but I think he hadn't blow out of the mind stat number. Markus King performed like he should've been. Aamo sucked most of times. Davison and Eagles were/are solid like they supposed to be. So the reason I put Kallis to this list, making him an exception of that low TPE cut is his S69 performance. Even before that he had a lots of awards and he was considered as one of the best goalies in 60's. However, most of times he was somewhat underwhelming. Before S69 came. Now, it was also a defense first lineup that helped boosting his stats, but he also wasn't choking...before last two games in finals. Anyways, the .931 save percentage, 1.66 GAA and 11 SO was a big deal in the era when nobody (or almost nobody) could came even close to .930 zone. So after 6 seasons of just ok stats this one was a breath of fresh air. And somewhat unexpected.

So this is my dream first line and goalie roster. And I somehow managed to get 1000 words on it. Wow lol.

    that's it and I'm out.

Welcome back to another entry of the greatest players from the portal era. Today we’re going to be looking at Finland. In case this is your first time reading, the format I use is five skaters and one goalie. If there’s a player who didn’t make the cut and I felt they were still worth mentioning there will be an honourable mention category. There will be a special exception in today’s article so be sure to check it out.

Now with that out of the way let’s get right into the list!

    F - Rauno Palo 1443 TPE @jRuutu
First up on this list we’ll start off strong with Rauno Palo. In 577 career games played, he recorded 233 goals and 336 assists for 569 points. The first few seasons of his career with Quebec were alright recording 131 points in 216 games. After the team moved to Vancouver his career started to take off, recording 31 goals and 35 assists for 66 points the very same season. He followed that up with 83 points the following season before having a career year in S67 putting up 46 goals and 64 assists for 110 points that year. He recorded 16 points in 18 games on the road to his first and only Continental Cup win. When the dust settled and the playoffs had ended he was awarded four individual trophies which were; the Mike Szatkowski Trophy for league leader in points, Scotty Campbell Trophy for league MVP, Brett Slobodzian Trophy for being voted the most outstanding player voted for by the players, and to top it all off he won the Alexander Beketov Trophy for leading the league in assists that season. In S68 he was traded to Riga where he spent the last two seasons of his career and recorded 179 points in those 2 seasons along with 31 playoff points in 28 games. Pretty solid career for the 4th overall pick. Although he wasn’t inducted into the Hall of Fame he’s by far one of the best to come out of Finland.

    F - Joel Ylonen 1256 TPE @Esso2264
Up next we have a very interesting story with finnish player Joel Ylonen. In his 8 season career between S64-S71 he was able to record 135 goals and 311 assists for 446 points. He was a pretty fantastic player, especially in the playoffs putting up 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points in 54 playoff games. He even won back-to-back cups with Seattle in S68 & S69. He wasn’t anything too flashy, never winning any individual trophies or making too many highlight reels. He did however put in the work and post some solid numbers night in and night out. In his 8 year career he was traded on six separate occasions. Some of which were pretty serious blockbuster trades. I could get into that but that’s not what this list is about and it probably deserves its own trade tree anyway. The largest one in terms of amount of assets was when he was traded to Seattle in exchange for six different assets, including a first rounder. He won’t be a Hall-of-Famer but he did have a solid career and represented Finland well during his time in the VHL.

    D - Fabio Jokinen 1224 TPE @jRuutu
Now we move onto the offensive dynamo on the back-end, Fabio Jokinen. In his 8 season career (6 of those with Quebec) from S52-S59 he was able to record 151 goals and 489 assists for 640 points in just 576 games played. The man knew how to set up his teammates and he did it well. Not only was he spectacular in his own zone, he also was a fantastic defender blocking over 1100 shots in his career. He was a two-time Sterling Labatte Trophy winner for being the league’s top defenseman, along with a Jake Wylde Trophy for league’s top defensive defenseman. He was able to capture his first and only Continental Cup in S56 with Quebec and had a career high 24 goals, 82 assists finishing with another career high 106 points that season. In S60, the very next season after he hung up the skates, he was inducted into the VHL Hall-of-Fame and rightfully so. He was a special talent that paved the way for many more defenders of his kind. There’s definitely been many kids in Finland as well as around the world who have looked up to his style of play over the years. Even the likes of Joseph McWolf may have looked up to him as their styles of play were quite similar.

    F - Aleksi Koponen 1190 TPE @Will
Up next on our list we have Hall-of-Famer Aleksi Koponen. Aleksi played part of his career before the portal era so I had to do a little bit of research to get all of his stats but we did manage to find them in the end. In his 8 season career spanning from S45-S52 he recorded 337 goals and 485 assists for a whopping 822 points in 576 games played. He won back-to-back cups as a rookie and a sophomore in S45 & 46 along with a Mike Szatkowski Trophy in S51. He wasn’t afraid to throw the body around a little bit as well, recording a little over a 1,000 career hits. Koponen was an absolute offensive dynamo and is ranked 18th in all time points. He’s definitely the best offensive player from Finland in the modern era.

    F - Mikko Aaltonen 1140 TPE @GRZ
Now we move onto Finnish forward Mikko Aaltonen. Aaltonen just retired this past season and in his 576 career games played, he put up 232 goals, 277 assists for 509 points. Although he never won any individual awards nor a Continental Cup, he was a consistent 30 goal scorer along with putting up more than 60 points per season. He won’t be inducted into the Hall-of-Fame but in terms of Finnish players, he’s one of the best to come from there.

    G - Tuomas Tukio 1400 TPE @Higgins
So normally I would just be using players from the portal era. However, there were no goalies in the modern era that I felt were worth mentioning so I decided to dig into the archives for the greatest Finnish goalie of all time. Upon some research through the Hall-of-Fame as well as all time goalie stats I came across none other than Tuomas Tukio. Tukio played from S31-S38 and in his career he posted a 359-114-37 record with 62 shutouts and a career .925% with a 1.99GAA. He’s 11th in games played, second in all time wins, tied for 8th in career SV%, second in GAA, and 16th in shutouts. Tukio had well over 13,000 saves in his career along with a multitude of trophies. He is a two-time Scotty Campbell Trophy winner for league MVP, two-time Brett Slobodzian Trophy winner for most outstanding player as voted by the players, two-time Aidan Shaw Trophy winner for league’s top goaltender, and to top it off he helped Helsinki win a Continental Cup in S34. To nobody’s surprise he was a first ballot Hall-of-Famer in S39 where he’s had his name cemented as one of the league’s best goaltenders in history. Normally I would stick to just portal era players but I felt he was just too good and their wasn’t anyone else even close to this caliber that was worth mentioning as one of the greatest players to come from Finland.

    Honourable Mention:
    F - Mikko Lahtinen 970 TPE @Beketov
One player I felt was worth mentioning who didn’t make the cut was Mikko Lahtinen. He doesn’t quite have the stats or skill level just yet to be considered one of the best. However, he does have a lot of potential to be on this list in the future and should be at least mentioned. In just four seasons in the VHL he’s been able to record 81 goals, 127 assists for 208 points in 288 games played. Lahtinen also has almost 800 hits in his career and even won the Dustin Funk Trophy for most improved player in S72. He’s yet to win a Continental Cup but he has played in 57 playoff games and recorded 23 goals, 14 assists for 37 points. There’s a lot of potential left yet so we’ll have to see how his career turns out but for now I felt he was at least worth mentioning. Although this doesn’t directly affect anything, he is a fan favourite in terms of fantasy picks putting up so many hits as a forward is bound to get the fans to like you as well. I’m sure we’ll hear more of this name as time goes on but for now he’s in the honourable mention category.

Unfortunately that’s all the time we have for today but be sure to let me know what you thought down below. Thanks for taking the time to give this a read, I do appreciate the support. Do you think the exception was valid or do you feel I should’ve stuck to the format? I’d love to hear your feedback and be sure to let me know what country you feel I should do next.

*An additional reminder that, should any subsequent lotteries be needed after 1st Overall has been decided, the odds will change depending on the winning team
i.e. Should a team with 10% odds of winning the lottery win 1st Overall, their "tickets" will be removed from the lottery and the following lottery will be conducted as odds of x/90, rather than x/100.

    one idea:
From the start of playoffs to the end of off-season, give a small amount bonus TPE for any MS that interviews a new member that’s without a team. Limit to once or twice per season per person.

That way you encourage contact with existing members which honestly I could see being a bigger factor in losing people than lack of sims

Welcome to the fifth edition of Ringless. In this series we look at the best teams throughout VHL history to never win the cup.

Make sure to check out other series VSN has to offer, such as our weekly reviews, podcasts, and scouting reports
VSN Radio | Weekly Review | VSN Scouting | Under 250 | Talents Behind the Trophies

Some teams have the talent to win it all, but simply can’t put it together for a strong playoff run. The S51 Calgary Wranglers fit that description, as they only would win a single game in the postseason, despite having one of the greatest regular seasons in league history.

The seasons prior to S51, the Wranglers had been building a team slowly but surely through the draft. They drafted forward Travis Gowecny, defenseman Tobias Klingberg, and another forward in Ted Doughty, who they selected second overall in the S49 draft. While these three were not superstars, they were very reliable players that the Wranglers could depend on for the upcoming seasons. They also had goaltender Ariel Weinstein, who was a very strong goaltender for Calgary. He was drafted in S45 by the Quebec City Meute third overall, then played in Stockholm for a few seasons before finding his way to Calgary. He was a veteran goaltender that could help this young Wranglers team thrive. The team had some good young pieces, but didn’t have the big star just yet. In the S50 draft, the Wranglers selected Theo Axelsson second overall, a future Hall of Famer that would be instrumental in Calgary’s success.

Future Hall of Famer Theo Axelsson was an important piece for the Wranglers throughout the early S50s

S50 was a solid season for the Wranglers. Theo Axelsson had a strong rookie year with 58 points, but only three players on the team had more than 50 points. The highest-scoring player was defenseman Marquis Hyvarian, who was a veteran for the team, with 63 points. Despite these very low offensive totals, goaltender Weinstein put up incredible numbers, with a 2.05 GAA and a .929 save percentage. This also was a time where goaltending dominated the league, with the likes of the Clegane brothers, Hans Wingate, and Jakab Holik, three of which are in the Hall of Fame, and Holik has been on the ballot for many seasons. The Wranglers finished with a record of 33-29-10, far from elite but it got them into the playoffs as the third seed in the North American Conference.

They were promptly swept by the Quebec City Meute, but it was a valuable experience for Calgary. They were on the right track, and a couple more solid pieces could make them a contender. Unfortunately for Calgary, they couldn’t pick up anyone in the draft, as S51 was one of the worst draft classes in history, with only twelve players being taken, not even enough to fill out two rounds. They had to resort to free agency.

Building teams through free agency is risky. You usually have to overpay for players in free agency, and many people believe building a team through the draft and trades is a better way. The S51 Wranglers had a very different philosophy. In order to try to bring their roster a couple more solid players to really take a big step forward, they signed not one, not two, not three, but four elite players who would go on to receive votes to make it into the Hall of Fame, although only three of them would end up actually making it. Those players were Unassisted, Black Velvet, Tyson Kohler, and Aleksi Koponen. The Wranglers went from a decent up and coming team to the best team in the league in the blink of an eye. Anything short of a cup this year would be a failure.

The regular season showed how incredible this team could be. They put up an astounding 132 points and 64 wins, one of the best seasons in VHL history. They had by far the best offense in the league, scoring 283 goals, nearly 40 more than the next best offensive team. The Wranglers' defense was also incredibly elite. Let's look at the best defensive season for every other team in their franchise history. The majority of the best seasons for each team defensively are around 115-130 goals against throughout that season, such as the Bears 128 goals against in S27, and the Titans 126 goals against in S33. The Meute had the best defensive season out of all of the other teams, allowing only 110 in S49. The Wranglers in S51 allowed only 96. Based on what I could find, that is the only time a team has ever allowed less than 100 goals against in a season. That’s barely more than one goal per game. The S51 Wranglers had statistically the greatest defense in VHL history.

The strong defensive core they had certainly played a huge factor in allowing only 96 goals all year. Black Velvet's 98 assists were the most in the league, and his 121 points were the most any defenseman had that year. Tobias Klingberg also contributed with 56 points of his own, but this defense was all about Black Velvet, as well as goaltender Ariel Weinstein. His .932 save percentage, 1.35 GAA, and 16 shutouts were some of the highest totals in the league, and had the Greg Clegane trophy, which was given to the goalie with the lowest GAA, existed back in S51, Weinstein would have won the award. Weinstein's .932 save percentage is tied for tenth best all time, his 1.35 GAA is fourth best all time, and 16 shutouts is also tied for tenth most all time .The Wranglers' defense and goaltending was incredible, but the forwards deserve some love too.

Ariel Weinsteins historic season helped the Wranglers win 64 games in S51

Aleksi Koponen led the team with 135 points and 60 goals, while Tyson Kohler had 122 points. Travis Gowecny had 71 points, complementing Koponen and Kohler on the first line and they formed a deadly lineup. On the second line, Unassisted had 106 points, including 54 goals, while Theo Axelsson had 65 points to support him. The team was noticeably top heavy, but they still were an incredible team. They were heavy favorites to win the cup in S51, and anything less than that would be disappointing.

Since they finished first in the North American Conference, they received a bye, and would end up facing the Toronto Legion in the conference finals. The Legion had some elite talent themselves, with Zach Parechkin and Max Molholt leading the team, both of which are Hall of Famers. Goaltender Greg Clegane had a season arguably as good, if not better than Ariel Weinstein, with a .940 save percentage and a 1.50 GAA, which are the second and eighth best all time respectively. The series was likely to come down to the goaltender battle; could Weinstein outduel Greg Clegane?

Game One was an intense matchup, as it was tied at one after regulation, and overtime was needed. Both goaltenders were playing incredibly, as was expected. After five minutes of overtime, Zach Parechkin scored to win the game for the Legion. Clegane’s .972 save percentage in game one helped the Legion pick up the win, as they were outshot by ten and outplayed for most of the game. The Wranglers had to win game two. In Game Two, Tyson Kohler scored only six seconds into the game, but the Legion tied the game up at one only a few minutes later. After that, the defense settled in and we went through the next two periods without any goals, still tied at one. Unassisted scored on the powerplay early in the third to give the Wranglers a 2-1 lead, and Weinstein shut down the Legion as Calgary would win Game Two and tie the series. Weinstein won the goaltending battle in Game Two, with 26 saves on 27 shots. Game three in Toronto was coming up next.

Game Three was not how Calgary expected. Max Molholt’s goal just twelve seconds in seemingly set the tone for the remainder of the game, as the Legion would go on to win 4-0. Clegane stopped all 26 shots he faced, and the Legion easily won Game Three. Game Four was now a must-win for the Wranglers, as they wouldn’t want to go down 3-1. Unassisted and Molholt traded goals in the second period of Game Four, and it was tied at one heading to the third. The Wranglers could not score, most notably their top line. Unassisted was doing what he had to do, but Koponen, Kohler, and Black Velvet had been very disappointing thus far. About halfway through the third, the Legion scored to take the league. The goal scorer was Marquis Hyvarinen, who was the Wranglers' leading scorer just a year prior, but they let him leave as they pursued other marquee free agents. That goal would end up being the winner, and Toronto would take a 3-1 series lead. Weinstein bounced back from Game Three, but his efforts were still not enough to help the Wranglers win. You can’t blame the goalie when your team has four goals in four games. Game Five was do or die for the Wranglers.

The home fans in Calgary had waited all season for a possible cup, but their hopes seemed to be crashing down. Greg Clegane was putting up some of the best performances ever against the Wranglers, and this elite offense failed to do much, but there was still hope. After all, the Legion’s offense hadn’t done great either. It was a scoreless first period in Game Five, but the Legion took the lead midway through the second to go up by one headed to the third. If the Wranglers didn’t score in the next 20 minutes, their 64 win season would have gone to waste. Midway through the third, the Legion go on a rush and score again, doubling their lead. Aleksi Koponen finally scored his first of the playoffs with a few minutes to go, but it was too late. The Legion would win Game Five 2-1, and win the series. Weinstein made 38 saves in Game Five, keeping the Wranglers in the game even though they were seriously outplayed. The Wranglers relied on elite scoring, but it disappeared when they needed it the most. Greg Clegane single-handedly won this series for the Legion.

Greg Clegane's performance against Calgary was one of the greatest single series performances in VHL history

In S52, they still won 50 games, but lost Unassisted during the offseason. They would lose in the semi-finals that year, and it all came crashing down after that. During the S52 offseason, they lost everyone, as Tyson Kohler, Black Velvet, Ariel Weinstein, Aleksi Koponen, and Theo Axelsson were no longer on the team by the time S53 began. The Wranglers' elite weapons were shut down against the Legion, and Greg Clegane’s performance may have been the greatest single series performance of all time. The S51 Wranglers were one of the best teams ever, but could only win one game when it mattered most.

Yeah its a fair suggestion - I think i'd prioritize getting World Cup and WCJ stats on player pages first but obviously only makes sense to include awards after that
