David O'Quinn reacted to Doomsday in TRADE ALERT: VAN/NYA
    Vancouver Wolves Receive:

    D David OQuinn
    S73 NYA 1st
    S73 DCD 2nd

     New York Americans Receive:

    D Micheal Gary Scott
    S72 VAN 3rd

    Analysis

There have been rumours swirling around the VHL that a big trade was coming, and they did not die down after the Gutzweilers were moved to Toronto. Surely enough, the New York Americans did indeed make the big move, as Micheal Gary Scott is moving to the Big Apple. After a sudden, unexpected attempt to move to defence from centre in the middle of the Vancouver Wolves' shocking first-round loss to the Seattle Bears last season, Scott finds himself getting a change of scenery. A New York team struggling to meet high expectations for Season 71 after a disappointing end to their year in Season 70 may just be the place for Micheal Gary Scott to get both his and the Americans' seasons on track. Certainly, a bold move by General Manager Joel Ylonen, as he will be parting with two Season 73 draft picks, including New York's first-rounder. Scott joins a solid core of defensemen, and with the highest TPA among defensemen in the VHL, easily takes over as the top defenseman on the Americans. Along with Lance Flowers, New York now boasts quality depth along the blue line, but will it be worth the price?

General Manager Keaton Louth can't help but smile after this trade, as surely he feels he got the better end of this transaction. David OQuinn doesn't have the TPA of MGS, but he is cheaper and frees up more cap for future moves for Vancouver. OQuinn's work ethic has been erratic, but he still maintains an active presence around the league and with proper motivation, perhaps the former first-round pick could reach that potential. Additionally, after multiple post-season failures, Louth stated a need to make some changes, and with rumours of strife and discontent in the Vancouver locker room, Scott was likely an ideal candidate to move. The real prize, however, is the draft picks acquired: New York's Season 73 first-rounder and the D.C. Dragons' second-rounder from the same season. If New York's struggles continue, it could prove to be an absolute win for Louth and the Wolves. Even if it winds up being in the middle of the first, it'll be a valuable piece for a Vancouver team likely in need of a re-tool right around that time.

While this is an even trade, in my opinion, Vancouver comes out ahead in terms of value with this trade. The Americans bulk up on defence and it could right the ship in their quest for the Continental Cup, but this is a very nice move for the future for Vancouver. Quinn could prove to be a solid addition, and the two draft picks to add depth at a critical point in time for the franchise.

    Get-to-Know the Players

    David OQuinn

The first overall pick of the Season 69 (nice) VHLM Dispersal Draft, he was also drafted with the 12th overall pick in the VHL Entry Draft the same season. As a member of the legendary Season 69 (nice) Saskatoon Wild, OQuinn scored an absurd 114 points and was instrumental in the Wild's record-setting season. With a VHLM-leading 99 assists, OQuinn won the Vladimir Boomchenko Trophy to cap off his career in the M. To date, however, he has not found the same success in the VHL, although his sophomore campaign is showing a lot of promise. It will have to finish in Vancouver, however, as he moves on to the Wolves. Will this change in scenery help OQuinn become the dominant force he was in the M?

    Micheal Gary Scott

At 5'6, 179 lbs, the top-earning defenseman in the VHL doesn't seem to be built like a defenseman at all, and that's because his career started as a centre. After one season in the VHLM with the Mexico City Kings, in which he tallied 84 points, MSG was drafted 8th overall by the Vancouver Wolves in the memorable Season 67 VHL Entry Draft. Although he struggled his first two seasons, despite becoming a Continental Cup champion in his rookie season, Scott broke through in Season 69 (nice) with 32 goals and 36 assists for 68 points. He followed it up in Season 70 with 69 (nice) points, continuing his strong play. Despite looking better than ever at the center, Scott shocked the league by announcing a position change to defence in the middle of the playoffs. Seemingly tired of playing in the shadow of Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Micheal Gary Scott got 18 games on top of Vancouver's depth charts on defence, posting top-ten calibre numbers. He'll now finish in New York, hoping to become a star on one of the VHL's biggest stages.

David O'Quinn got a reaction from studentized in A disappointing season, and other news.
This season wasn't an easy for an up-and-coming defenseman in New York. Chosen 12oa in the S69 VHL Entry Draft, he definitely wasn't expected to be a star, but to grow consistent was entirely expected, if not by his peers or management, at the very least by himself. This has not come to pass, however. Defenseman David O'Quinn missed nearly 30tpe this year, which at the end of the day could have been the difference between his team making the playoffs and missing. In terms of individual performance, O'Quinn registered 3 goals and 15 pts in 72 games, a rather modest collection of numbers compared to his 14 goals and 114 pts in his second and final VHLM season, where he helped lead Saskatoon to its most recent VHLM championship.

There could be plenty of reasons for this, of course. There's always hardship every season, burnout, struggling to write a good article, struggling with the 'fun' aspect in general. But does this excuse all that missed TPE? and how much will that missed TPA affect him, and his team, in the future? Time will tell with that one.

One thing we can tell now, however, is where does he place in his teams hierarchy? Well, it's not too pretty. Besides backup goaltender Thorvald Gunnarsson and former prospect Ryo Yamazuki II, O'Quinn is arguably the worst player on the entire team. He has plenty of room to grow, of course, most of which he will hopefully utilize, but there are a few players that were picked lower in his draft that are now better than him, and at the end of the day that is nothing short of shameful. As O'Quinn's contract is up this year, the Americans may see fit to not sign him at all, since he has turned out, so far, to be nothing but a depth defenseman on a team that needs better.

The future has hope, though. O'Quinn still grew by a rather respectable 100 TPE this season, and if he continues this trend, in a few seasons he will still likely turn out to be a supporting top pair dman, not to carry a line or a team but to help a better player carry the load.

The word "strong" gets thrown around a lot, during tragedies (such as the Boston Marathon Bombings) or losses. Today, we not only lost a friend, a family member or just a colleague in the VHL, we lost a strong individual who was kind, big hearted and most importantly, respected around the community.

You are all more than welcome to wear this in your sig, something simple but with a strong message, and something to show our appreciation for the life that was, and will forever be, #elmestrong ❤️

    This is not a joke.

This morning -- at roughly 2:32 AM Mountain -- Elmbeck's brother got in touch with me to announce some very unfortunate news: one of our members has passed away. Fredrik (Elmebeck's real name) passed away late Friday night, early Saturday morning. I get the honor of announcing this to the community he enjoyed -- a hockey community that brings people together -- and salute the memories and friends he made. Hockey is a sport that connects individuals, and those of us who got to know him a little will remember him.

Elmebeck and I shared a lot of stories during our time together in Saskatoon, and I will always be jealous of his nature life. I won't share personal stories, and I won't share the details of his death, but if you wish to contact his brother you can do so by clicking this tag: @Magnus Nilsson. Please do not spam Magnus, as both he and his family are mourning the loss of a family member.

I want to thank @Peace, @FrostBeard and @Esso2264 (and countless of other people, @Steve, @Tate, @Phil, @CowboyinAmerica, etc, you know who you are if we have chatted) whom I have learned so much from, our commissioners in @Banackock and @diamond_ace who both are straight as arrows, for giving me the tools and the opportunity for this. But I also want to broadly just thank the players in this league for being nice, creative and so inspiring that I would even want to spend the time to do this.

Saskatoon will CONTINUE after the best indexed season in VHLM history, second best I believe in all of history (I believe S3? @Tagger / @Beketov), and I will try keep Saskatoon shining and always a force to reckon with. @Dalton Wilcox @Jubis @JohnOQuinn etc etc

Oh, and I will start a campaign to change the name and logo. Same city, just a better name and logo.

I hope former and future players will be happy with my performance here. There will be an AGM to learn the ropes here in the future, but I want to get settled first and make my own mistakes to begin with.

2 hrs until midnight? no problem.

In a quite short two and a half years, O'Quinn went from a semi-retired local hockey hero out of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, to a celebrated VHLM star, champion and leader, and also a VHL bluechip prospect.

I'm Roger Pennies, and this is my story on O'Quinn's road to victory with the VHLM's Saskatoon Wild, over the last two seasons.

In season 68, O'Quinn stormed into the scene as a rookie and almost entirely unknown among the members of the league (Though it may be fair to say he still is), but came out of the gate very strong, registering 6 goals and 63 pts in his first season. A year on, after being drafted 12oa by the New York Americans, O'Quinn had a legendary season: Both due to the outrageous success of his team overall, and the merits of his own individual success, with 99 assists and 15 goals on the season, aswell as 23 pts in 14 playoff matches. Of course, such production can be highly attributed to the quality of his chances, his teammates, etc, but it's impressive nonetheless, and he came out of it as a playoff hero.

He has a small legacy in Saskatoon, having played 144 games for them and putting up many points, but his name will be remembered positively at the very least. As O'Quinn leaves, other important figures have left the team, so where Saskatoon will place in the VHLM next year is mostly a big question.

Anyways - back to O'Quinn. In s70, O'Quinn is projected to be placed on the 2nd defensive pair of the New York Americans, as a darkhorse contender for rookie of the year and, hopefully, a high-tier playmaker in the works for the Americans.

    Here's the interview:

P:  "So, big year, lots of victories, are you taking some time to sit around and enjoy the atmosphere, the winnings, all of that?"

O: "A little bit, yeah. Between spending time at home, celebrating with the boys one last time, and preparing for  New York, i've actually had a little bit of time to just sit around and take it all in. It's been nice.

P: "Speaaaaking of New York, what are your prospects lookin like out there? New house? Visit any clubs? Check out the new practice facilities yet?

O: "We're still pretty early into the summer, I haven't had a chance to get back to practicing quite yet. I found a nice place in New York, it's just a small single bed apartment, nothing special. I'll be spending most of my 'home' time at home in the Cape.

P: "Short interview again, but this is the final question. Where do you see your own stats next year?"

O: "Cmon, rog. You're going to bore the viewers! You damn well know my answer to this question."

And with that, O'Quinn gave me his typical tap on the shoulder and walked off. I think he would have answered with something like, 'It's about the team', as he usually does. This has been Roger Pennies, signing off.

The World Juniors first of two round robin... rounds, are well underway, and the first round robin is almost finished. After seven, Canada is 3-4-0, tied for third place with Team World, however, team world has one less win (but two overtime losses), so have a lower regulation win%. Anyways, let us analyze the games, and along the way i'll try to mention some interesting (and at times, frankly insane) statistics.

    Game 1: World @ Canada
Final Score: 3-4 SO, Canada wins.

Through 20 minutes, Team World was up 2-0. It wasn't looking good for Canada, and world was outshooting Canada 13-6. However, after World scored a 3rd goal to 'strengthen' their lead in the third period, Canada, a nation famous for being the 'Comeback kids', did its thing. After two goals fueled by the playmaking ability of winger Kris Rice to finish off the second, Nate Telker tied it with a minute and a half left in the 3rd.  Finally, in the shootout after a goalless overtime, Canada's... D1 scored the winning shootout goal. Oops.

    Game 2: Canada @ World
    Final Score: 1-4, World wins.

Although Canada took the early lead, three horribly timed penalties later Canada was down 3-1, and Worlds solid defense availed them as Canada went goalless after their first goal, in the first period.

Game 3: United States @ Canada
    Final Score: 2-4, Canada wins.

After an early goal five minutes into the game by the United States' team, they managed to hold their single tally lead until the third period (Including an insane second period where a total of five shots were registered between the two teams). However, quickly into the third, just two minutes by, Canada had their own single goal lead, fueled by two assists from RJ Jubis. The United States' managed to tie it, but with 50 seconds left Daldo, and a later empty net goal, Canada came out on top. In the third period, Canada had a 50% shooting percentage.

    Game 4: Asia @ Canada
    Final Score: 3-1, Asia wins.

This was a fast paced, high energy game with low goal totals to show for it. The shot total's tell an interesting story, however. Canada managed to outshoot Asia in every period, but their goaltender Jimmy Spyro, who Canada passed on, was a brick wall. So it was, despite Canada's noble effort, with high possession level's, Asia came out on top holding the lead throughout the game, thanks to superior goal tending.

    Game 5: Canada @ Asia
    Final Score: 3-5, Asia wins.

A somewhat similar story to the previous game in Canada, while Canada had a decent amount of shots, Asias superior goal-tending and ability to cache in more often on their (high quantity of) chances won them the game. At it's closest point, Canada had it tied 9 minutes into the second. It was not to be, however, as Jerry Wang scored two goals within the span of 8 seconds, both goals assisted by the same faceoff: man Hiroshi Okada.

    Game 6: Canada @ Europe
    Final Score: 3-2, Canada wins.

Another game in which Canada boasts a higher shooting percentage than its opponent, Canada held the lead all game. Although almost letting go of their lead letting Europe score two goals in the last eight minutes, Flashback managed to hold on and the team. Canada won noticeably less faceoffs and was less physical than Europe in this game, but capitalized more often, which lead to the win.

Game 7: Canada @ United Sates
Final Score: 0-4, United States win.

This was a downright ugly game for Team Canada, because the game was nowhere near 'close'. Obviously, Canada was shutout, and at the end of the day that loss is what matters the most, but it goes deeper than that. Canada was outclassed by the United States on the shot chart by a whopping (USA) 40-21 (CAN). This was felt particularly hard in the first period, where Canada was outshot nearly five to one. Flashbacks respectable-ish 900% save percentage was not enough to save Canada, though. The next area Canada was outclassed in was Faceoffs, as the United States won 13 more faceoffs than Canada. While this particular statistic can be hard to interpret, since you may 'lose' a faceoff and gain the puck immediately afterwords, it's still telling of Canada's shortcomings at center. Canada was also outhit 22-13, and out shotblocked 12-9, which is highly impressive on the United States part considering Canada's lower amount of shots attempted, or so it would seem. The only area where Canada succeeded was discipline, only registering two penalty minutes the whole game. The United States' 3 penalties were never capitalized upon, however.

Canada needs to win their final game, but not to make it to the second round.
While Canada is almost certainly going to make the second round of the round robin, Canada still needs to win that last game. Proving the haters wrong, and keeping morale high within the team will be important for Canada, since the second round is looking scary. Secondly, if team world leapfrogs Canada by some miracle, Canada will be stuck facing team Asia, which is almost certainly a death sentence, where Canada won't win a medal. Of course, it's not elimination, but every win counts a helluvalot. Canada is slated to face team Europe when the second round starts, atleast for now. These final four games, one of which Canada play's in will be a determining factor for the medal round.

Although not as important, I'll also quickly touch on individual stats within Team Canada. Unsurprisingly, though interestingly, RJ Jubis leads the team with 7 points, Daldo leading - but tied with Telker - with 3 goals. Secondarily is Guy Sasakamoose, who has 6 pts. What is a surprise, however, is first line center Nate Telker. He's tied for goal lead with Daldo, but hasn't registered a single assist throughout the tourney. Canada is playing well all things considered, so it will be seen as to whether or not Telker will be demoted in favor of Rice.
