I think Jeff drafted me knowing I'm gunna build however I want considering I'm a former GM in the league and whatnot. The trust is there in that regard. I'll throw down 60 LD and we can keep track of it individually before that reroll comes down and see how it goes. Granted, my thoughts and beliefs are that not just 1 player does it, most players do it. And max at 50 so it's not the most expensive thing to do.

Leadership is like... Salt ontop of your food after it's all cooked and done. Sure, it's great, but it doesn't necessarily make your player better at the fundamentals. You might WIN more in your career with it. So, there could be some value somewhere in there.

TBH I've noticed all my players explode when I invest in LD. Look at Michael Johnson for example.

It definitely has some merit and I think the fact that it's completely ignored is hilarious. Maybe it's the best in goalies or something? Theres something there and I just can't put my pinky on it.

Gotcha on the title. This is becoming a norm now, where I just ramble on a saturday afternoon before the big day. Well, here it is.

Something had to give with the meta, and I absolutely am in favour of these new hybrid attributes. The only thing is, now we all have to learn what works as a build and what doesn't. Which, in my person opinion, will be a fun thing to do. Will there eventually be a new meta? Absolutely. I don't doubt for a minute with nerds on the internet and a simulation league that we won't have a meta. The thing is, meta's won't hurt us as harshly as the 90 SC 40 PA world, which will be nice. I do, whole heartedly, believe we will have a meta again. What will it look like? No idea. But we were trending towards it all the years leading up to.

Time to talk a little bit about my time in Vancouver. Now, I was running my team with Sixers until he decided to step down. So what did I naturally do? Well, I hired Nyko. Why? No clue. Obvious mistake for the league. We got to talking, he was testing a bit and we decided to buy into this 90 SC 40 PA world. Lets do this, I remember saying. Lets break the VHL. Eventually, I stepped down due to IRL reasoning but we got to see this day. I'm also not going to take claim for Vancouvers success. I think we can say, I played a part in it, but that's about it. Sorry VHL, blame Nyko obviously!

You know what's really nice about these hybrid attributes is that we might see diversity in our players. We needed some parity, we needed variety, and I believe this gives that to us. We're going to have more range in our players which is something we needed. It's what the pro's have as well. Players that a great in different ways, not just in 1 specific way. This gives GM's, AGM's and commissioners more thoughts when it comes to helping the new players, which IMO is great. Getting our minds moving will be good for them and us old VHL bum heads. I'm very excited about these changes.

It's sad in a way that we lost our privileges to the clients attributes since I never got to prove that LD was a valuable attribute. That's honestly the most disappointing part. I wish I could have. I probably should have. My hypothesis was that 50-55 LD made your player a top tier player. Reason being was that you could hype your team up. Apparently, LD meant that your player could bring your teams morale up (seriously) during a game, meaning if a goal was scored, you're more likely to get your team to perform better. I honestly think that the meta builds with a little bit of leadership would have been over powered as fuck and I'm glad we never got to see it but at the same time, as an avid user, I'd have loved to proven this hypothesis. Alas, maybe I'll prove it in test sims one day, I'm not trying to give away all the companies secrets, at least!

    Hybrid Attributes: Ending the Meta

    Hello @Members!

As I’m sure you’re all aware by now, the VHL has a meta problem. If you aren’t aware…. where have you been? I’ll explain though: at its core, the “meta” in the VHL refers to building a player with max Scoring (as well as ideally max Defense) and absolutely no Passing, or as little Passing as you can possibly manage. This tricks the engine into taking an insane amount of shots rather than passing and more shots means more goals. An individual player doing this has minimal impact on the engine as a whole but an entire team doing it is not only salary efficient (since not much TPE is needed), but can also be very beneficial to that team as they outshoot and outscore their opponents rather consistently. As more and more users have started to discover this, more and more teams have come to adopt this “meta” strategy, intentionally or otherwise.

The SHL discovered this a few years ago and completely changed engines to eliminate it. Before I get into our fix I want to explain something to eliminate a misconception: we did know about this and we weren’t just ignoring it in hopes that it wouldn’t be a problem. At the time it was discovered, we ran tests and found the impact to be lesser with our engine version and roster composition. It was present but not extreme - combined with re-rolls being much harder to acquire here, we thought it best not to rock the boat believing changes would be more detrimental to league health than the problem which, at that point, had not really come up in the VHL.

Unfortunately times changed and as we know, the meta has been on our doorstep for a bit now. That is why the @BOG has been working very hard the last few seasons to come up with a solution that would not only eliminate the meta without changing engines (something that would be nuclear to the portal and unwanted if it can be avoided) but also improve build diversity, roster makeup, and hopefully league enjoyment.

Therefore, I present your new VHL Player Attributes:

"But Beketov..." I hear you asking, "if we aren't changing engines and we can't change the attributes inside of STHS how do we have new attributes?"

Good question theoretical member! The short answer is: we don't. The above are the attributes you as members will be seeing but they are not the attributes STHS will be seeing. We are calling these hybrid attributes and their job is to give us more control over builds without directly limiting what can and can't be added to. They work by spreading out the TPE placed into them into different STHS attributes at different ratios. Specifically the ratios that are used are:

I know that looks like a lot of numbers and attributes but I promise it's not as complicated as it seems at first glance.

Essentially 1 point into a Hybrid attribute = a ratio of 1 or more STHS attributes. For example adding 1 point to Offensive Vision will add 0.3 points to PA and 0.3 points to SC (this sounds quite low but I promise it works out). To make it so that this doesn't completely break how much TPE is needed for a build all values will be rounded down (since STHS cannot accept decimals) but the points aren't lost, they simply aren't used until you hit a new whole number. I also want to assure you that these values were not randomly determined - they were the byproduct of many test sims to ensure they would mitigate all of the issues we were aiming to address.

These values can be more easily tweaked over time if a new meta develops and give us granular control over the STHS attributes in a way that simply having an update scale never has and never could. In the specific case of the meta, the eagle eyed among you have probably already noticed that there’s no way to achieve max scoring without adding to passing. In fact if you max all the scoring attributes you will end up around 64 passing by association. This was the crux of the meta fix, build attributes together in a way that making a purely “meta” player is impossible.

The additional bonus of course is build diversity, or at least that's the hope. I'm hitting this explanation over the head a bit and I promise I'll stop soon but I wanted to touch on this very quickly because I can see the comments now from that theoretical member again, "couldn't we have achieved the same thing by adding archetypes or simply a required gap between passing and scoring?" Yes, theoretical member, we could have. However we chose to take longer to make this than go one of those routes because the VHL's attributes have always been based around adding what you want, where you want. We do not have limits on specific attributes or requirements like gap; it would be easier but that doesn't inherently make it better. @Beaviss originally came up with an early version of this a few years back (so credit to him) and I shot it down because I didn't think it made sense at the time. However when looking at all of this again it seemed to fit perfectly. Fix the meta and add a whole new world of build theorycrafting. We don't have any new actual attributes but having different ways to get things up and having to balance certain trade offs inherently creates more opportunity to diversify. You can try this out for yourselves since @Spartan ohas graciously simplified our testing spreadsheet here (originally designed by @Enorama, credit where due because I certainly couldn't do all that math) which you can use to start designing your build right now before this all comes into play.

    ---

Which leads me out of the meat of this announcement and into the nitty gritty details: Implementation and what it all means.

First off, this is going into effect for the start of S83 which will likely mean extending the off-season slightly because we need to accommodate the fact that every skater in the league will be re-rolled down to TPA + banked after depreciation is run, which will happen early. This is done so that you can re-apply your TPE into the new attributes as you please. You can choose to change your build if you'd like or you can try and build exactly the same, the choice is ultimately yours. Inactive players will be re-rolled by their GM's and any players not re-rolled by the start of the season will be retired.

We recognize this is a large change though and builds may not be perfectly finalized even with the extra tools and preparation time. For that reason we will be offering a 3 season window (ending at the start of S86) in which you will be able to re-roll your player again for free. Everyone will be able to do this once regardless of if they have previously used the paid re-roll or not.

We do also recognize that this is a WC off-season as well as the other usual off season tournaments and those will not be affected. We will download a ratings file for them the last day before everyone is reset and run the tournaments off of that file. You may have noticed by now that none of those attributes above and nothing I have said thus far relates to goalies; that is because goalies shall remain untouched for now. They will not be re-rolled or affected in any way at this time. If changes to their attributes need to be made in the future we shall do so but for now we want to gather data without adjusting them.

The update scale and depreciation will also remain unchanged, again at least for now. From our testing depreciation should be roughly the same difficulty to fight as before for the higher TPE players and should be slightly easier for the lower TPE players. Additionally the update scale does not appear to require changing and will operate in exactly the same way as before with 1 caveat: attributes will start at 0 and go to 99 instead of the 40-99 that the VHL has ran with for 82 seasons. This only applies to the hybrid attributes with the ones inside STHS still having a baseline of 40. The update scale for 0-70 will remain at 1 TPE per point. The process of updating will also remain unchanged however it will look slightly different. We will be upgrading the update page to showcase not only which points go into your hybrid attributes but also the effect of your STHS attributes. It is worth noting, however, that there will be disheartening moments in this system on occasion. Because of how the ratios work and the rounding down there will be times where you add a point and see nothing change. Again I would like to clarify that every point added does get counted, it may just not be enough to push you over the rounding threshold. The TPE tool shall also be adjusted accordingly to help people figure out their builds and see exactly what adding to everything does. It will work the same as the above link but be a lot less manual.

I recognize this is a long explanation, a lot of words, and a lot to take in. It is not a decision we made lightly but it is a decision we are excited about. It should hopefully fix a lot of player attribute problems we have been facing in one move and allow the league to grow without destroying everything we have built with STHS. This will allow our attributes to be closer to the expectation of the engine without suppressing the creativity to do as you please, it will put an end to the meta build, it will make for an increase in build diversity, and it will allow the VHL to continue to thrive. Please know that we will be keeping an eye on things over the next few seasons as, regardless of the amount of testing we did, ultimately the biggest test is getting it in all of your hands. If we need to adjust sliders or change goalies or anything else we will do so. We ask that you all embrace this change and help to make the league better.

If you have any further questions, points of clarification, or concerns, please reach out to a Commissioner or a BoG member. We'd be happy to explain details to prevent incorrect information from circulating.

Chicago, however, were on the other side of the spectrum and continuing their pursuite for a high draft pick. First period, Riga outshoots Chicago 29-11 and Riga scored on 3 of those shots while Chicago only scored 1. The second period was closer where Chicago shot 4 less times (14 to 10) and scored 2 goals. The third period, was an absolute barrage of shots from Riga in which they put away 2 goals which secured their win 5-3.

Wow. That was easy to write. I guess the difficult part is explaining my picks. I mean, at the end of the day, everything is up for interpretation. However, these are the players that stood out to me. These players I felt a connection with, whether I played with them or watched from afar. This is my dream team. Not necessarily the best set of players in the VHL, ever really. I'm also keeping this super informal. I can't be bothered to look up awards and do direct analysis. Who are on your dream team of players who influenced you. I'm curious what list of players you come up with because while those players may or may not be the greatest of all time, they had an influence on you somehow. Alrighty, lets get this show on the road!

Let's start with Hunter Hearst Helmsley. This is one of the biggest beasts the VHL has ever seen. I specifically made Onde Sandstrom to emulate a similar player to HHH. HHH had everything in his repertoire. I mean, he had the hands, the skating, defensive instincts, and the ability to be at the right place at the right time. This player, in my opinion, was exactly the type of player you wanted on your team. He was elite at every facet. Sure, he didn't score the most points ever in the league. But he was up there and scary as shit while at it. His last season in Warsaw, which was his best, was a 113 point season. His plus/minus was always elite, and he always shared an affinity with another player on this list, Julius Freeman.

Next on the list is Julius Freeman. Now, keep in mind. These were seasons where scoring wasn't at its peak like today. Julius, however, was extremely scary as a player. Julius, for the most part, was a PPG player and, for the most part, scored less than HHH, but their partnership was dangerous. They elevated each other and scored every single game. Vancouver was no feat as well. This was a team that was loaded everywhere, but Julius and HHH were the heartbeats of that team. It's actually shocking in my mind that they only won 1 cup (maybe two while I was gone?). Julius was the Dank, and Henrik was the Hank and one of my favorite duos in the VHL.

Matt Thompson. Do I need to say more? This was a legendary player from the commissioner himself—the first player on this list that I've personally played with. But you cannot convince me that he's not worthy of being on this list. Matt literally carried us in Malmo. 122 points with an insane shot percentage. The sad reality is that Matt isn't the more famous of the two players from Bek, but I think he had an absolutely insane career. Between playing in Seattle, Helsinki, and capping off in Malmo, he had an insane career. Scoring was easy to Matt, and so was hitting. Matt was the embodiment of a two-way forward.

Condor Adrienne is easily the best defender in the VHL era EVER. This dude, my god. Easily my favorite teammate of all time. Condor could shoot, pass, defend, and make an omelet during the game. I mean, I'm curious if any of you think there's a better player ever. This dude was a free win in fantasy throughout his career—super fun to watch as well. Condor should be named after an award in the E. Sure, he's never played in the VHLE, but he deserves his name on an award somewhere because I think he was the best D ever to grace the earth of the VHL. At least top 3 in my books at the bare minimum.

Lincoln Tate is another great defender. Sure, he doesn't compete with Condor Adrienne; however, he's a great player to have on your team. He could do everything and lead a team as the captain. Tate had an aura about him. He would make his players better, somehow. He could convince any player in the locker room to work hard. Tate reminds me of Ronaldo but not as famous. Hard work with a combination of talent got him to the top, and he deserves some recognition on this list. Hell, I wasn't even on his team, but he made me work my fucking ass off on and off the ice. This is a dude who deserves some love.

Rayz Funk is probably the best goalie ever to grace the VHL. He was fun to watch and an MVP candidate. He was everything I was not in Michael Johnson. He's won everything, and realistically, if he could've been named after an award, I have no doubt he would've been. Rayz was the pinnacle of that Seattle Bears time. He would shut out teams in the most clutch times as well. This was maybe, the most elite goalie to touch the ice. Even now, theres tonnes of great goalies coming through the league and yet I don't see any one of them getting as many accolades as Rayz got with Seattle. Unfortunately, there's not much more to say about him; you should know his contributions already. I mean, didn't he win an MVP in the finals multiple times? Cmon. Name a better goalie, I'm waiting.

Now again, this is a simple yet subjective list. Were there players that could've made this list? Sure. Were there players more objectively better statistically? Absolutely. But this was my dream team. The team was the best in my entire time in the VHL. Sure, there could've been better players before me, but every single one of these players holds an affinity to me. I'm inquisitive about hearing your thoughts and feelings towards this list. Are there any players you would replace? And with whom? Why do you think those players are better? Let me know in the comments below.

I made a protein pizza today. It was fire. We threw some protein powder into the pizza dough and it still rose well. We used casein protein as that works extremely well. The dough raised well, the cheese melted extremely well and all the meats were cooked deliciously. My goodness, this was 1 hell of a meal. We all feasted like kings at the house. The team has been working on bringing me back fully to fitness. I've noticed I've been a step back all week even though I've been back to playing games every single day. It's just not been the same. More practices, more gym training, more healthy food choices. It's been work, that is for sure. However, I've started to see some benefits from all of this. My skating is definitely 50-60% back. I can see myself coming back for a strong rest of the season.

Sweden has treated me really well, I must say. Every single person has been incredibly fun, lively, nice and generous. I've had locals telling me to go try certain restaurants or historic sites. It's been surreal being in Europe and I'm glad I could make it this far in my hockey career.

Let me know in the comments below.

fonziGG got a reaction from Dil in Seymour made a Protein Pizza

It's been surreal being in Europe and I'm glad I could make it this far in my hockey career.

fonziGG got a reaction from Kisslinger in Stockholm Vikings Press Conference
    1. I think it's a great trade. Ente is a amazing teammate to have in the LR.
    2. I think sky is the limit.
    3. My ability to pot the puck in the net. Goals win games baby.
    4. Our defence is young. Otherwise, I don't see a weakness to be honest.
    5. I think we need to work on our stamina and line changes.
    6. Ente is a great teammate to have. Since he's come in, we've gelled quite a lot.

fonziGG got a reaction from Shindigs in Butts injures himself
It's crazy. You know, I didn't think I'd have the time to write this. I mean, also the attention. I've been struggling recently and a lot of players and commentators have noticed this recently. Butts hasn't been at 100%. It started from a slash in the game against Bratislava. Bo Johansson ( @Shindigs) slashed my ankle and immediately I went down. Barely got to the bench as well. It was rough. We went to the medical room immediately and the doctor said it's definitely injured but he needed more information. I went for an MRI to see what the injury looked like from the inside. After the MRI, I was able to put some weight on my foot so I was walking with a boot on. All the results came back clear as well so it supported the boot walking idea. After a few games, doctors said I was able to return to skate in practice... So I did.

Heres the thing I learned, doctors on the team are absolutely looking in your best interests in regards to your health. However, they also hold a interest to the team. Now, theres absolutely nothing wrong with rushing me back to the team if you genuinely believe that I'm 100% healthy. Even I thought I was healthy, but after all this I learned that I needed to get these things checked out for someone who is more neutral. I was out for a total of 10 days. On the 13th day, I returned to game action. During the second period, I could already feel something uncomfortable with my ankle. Something definitely wasn't right. I bring it up with the medical team on the bench and after the game, I again go in for another MRI.

You'll never guess what happened. I've suffored a stress fracture due to ramping out very very quickly. I would be out for an entire month. Welp, I won't lie to you. I cried heavily. An entire month of no Gym, Tan, Laundry or the sort. I am extremely disappointed. To the point of depression really. I've never been this upset before. In fact, protein farts had to take a pause. Everything had to pause. I was in bed for 2 weeks and didn't even leave the house for any type of physio. Granted the first two weeks were meant to be full on rest time due to the recovery plan.

After the 2 weeks were up, I started training again, physio and working with the medical team. However, due to the fact that the medical team has to travel with the team... It meant that I had to travel with the team. Now, heres the thing. Mentally, I was absolutely in a bad spot. Socially, I wasn't exactly happy nor excited to return to full training. The team has been supportive, but I was just sad and down. The thing was, this was such a blessing in disguise. The team cheered me up, training cheered me up and my team was cheering me up. Now here I am, just got the news that I would be returning to the ice tomorrow for the first time in a month. I am beyond excited.

This is my notice to the league.

I am stepping down from my role as a VHL GM at the conclusion of Toronto's season (prior to the VHL Entry Draft).

Over the last few months my interest in the Victory Hockey League has taken a steep nose dive, and as a whole I've found myself growing more irritated with the league recently; it has become a chore to login. It's not fair to those on the Toronto Legion, the league or aspiring VHLM & VHLE GMs/the GM wishful that a sitting VHL GM struggles to visits the forum beyond seeing sim results, engaging in minor trades and rarely reading threads. As the GM of Toronto I had massive plans for the second rebuild I had put the team through, I had doubled down on my scouting and was drafting members I thought would be a good fit within our developing locker room. Normally I think someone here would say something along the lines of how they feel bad the Legion weren't in a position to compete, but I'll be leaving my replacement with what I consider a decent young roster.

    Continuing on:

I've come to terms with myself on numerous subjects; as I get older I've noticed I have less personal patience with people, which can absolutely be attributed to the daily stresses I've had [and continue] to endure over the last couple of years and the mental pressure of those stresses; I lack the tact to deal with people and the drama -- innocent or not -- that comes with the territory of being a general manager; and frankly I'm an older soul who has more controversial opinions on the practices and strategies within the VHL.

History will remember me as a mediocre GM with no accomplishments, I accept that, but at least I'll step away with my integrity intact (and the S69 Saskatoon Wild).

    Take care everyone,

    - Peace

    (To whom it may concern,

Doomsday was hired as my AGM recently, we all know he's a great person and has GM experience with the VHL. I'd like to recommend him for the position if he'd like it, but I understand that decision is not mine to make.)
