Hello hockey fans, quick update from the camp of Woody McPine regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. Woody would like all the fans, players, managers, and anybody else reading this, that he is having no symptoms of the coronavirus. He is still taking precautions, though, staying isolated at his family tree farm for as long as possible before the season starts. He urges everyone to be careful, safe, healthy, and listen to what the experts are saying. They’re experts for a reason. Woody urges everybody to stay home as much as possible.
That being said, Woody is very excited to get back on the ice with his new team, the Minnesota Storm. He’s being doing a lot of work in the offseason to prepare for his second year in the VHLM, hoping to have a better year and bring home a championship. He has installed some synthetic ice in his parents’ yard and got his family to shoot pucks at him to keep him in game shape, as well as communicating with professional trainers to come up with a good, at home, fitness routine. He believes he’s in the best shape of his life and hopes that will translate to the new season.
Woody would like to extend a huge thank you to diamond_ace of the Prague Phantoms and to Rayzor_7 from the Storm for seeing the potential in his game and drafting him. He was pleasantly surprised at his position in the draft and is working hard to make sure he isn’t a bust. He’s looking forward to meeting the teams and knocking back a few waters with the boys (he is still 17 after all). Everyone he’s been chatting with so far seem very friendly and he feels they’ll all have the good chemistry needed, along with the skill, to make a run for the cup.
Looking ahead to the next season, Woody fully expects to stay in Minnesota (barring a trade or injury in Prague), and can’t wait to help the team with their championship defense and run it back for another ‘ship (his first of course). He’s looking to build on that experience in order to help out the Phantoms as soon as possible, potentially S72 as Brick Wahl is retiring, but won’t be disappointed at all if he stays with the Storm for another year to help build his game to the elite level he expects from himself.
After the success he had in high school, Woody is looking to regain that feeling as a pro and knows that the key to success is hard work and teamwork. He demonstrated some of that teamwork last year with Las Vegas, leading all VHLM goalies with 8 assists in only 33 games. What a beauty, perhaps he should consider a position change if the whole stopping pucks thing doesn’t work out.
I’ll end off with a direct quote from the man himself. “Looking forward to getting back at it with the boys, knocking out a few Ws, lifting that trophy over our heads. See everyone on the ice in a couple days!”

Going into this draft, the Prague Phantoms only had a 1st and two 4ths, and weren't really expecting to get much out of it other than at the top. Originally I'd been looking into dealing the 1st down a few spots (spoiler after the fact, if the trade down would have cost me @Doomsday, the backup option would have been @Proto, so I couldn't really move too far). Ideally, this trade would have netted me a late 2nd or so - no real targets in that area, but I like to have guys in the pipeline and we really haven't had that since Ben McGirr @cartoes made it up to the bigs last season. No trade materialized that I was comfortable with - a few decent offers on the value side of things, but value doesn't necessarily mean it's what we want. No real issue - couldn't stock the cupboard, but I was able to grab the guy I'd had in my sights for over a season.

As the draft went on, I started looking into the guys down the board a bit. I spotted one guy who TPE-wise would have been a decent fit with my 41st pick, but was one of the few guys left on the board who'd actually written a media and did some press conferences. I opened up Woody McPine's @HearnNation67 update log and saw not only a guy who would and should go before 41, but a guy who was going under the radar massively based largely on the timeline of when he joined. Moved some pieces around, jumped up into the late 3rd (crucially without giving up 41, but 44 instead) and managed to pick up McPine.

At 41, the top guys were primarily welfare and practice facility, which isn't really going to create a star, but done consistently that'll net you a solid 2nd liner upon reaching their prime. I looked through some guys and one of the most consistent ones left, and a guy I'm definitely happy to have added to the pipeline, was Jack John @GoadenGoalie35. If a welfare and practice facility guy picks up some extras here and there, training camps, theme week pts, that sort of thing, you get Alex Pearson @Jayrad28 who is one of my best guys from the expansion draft - if John becomes another Pearson, I'm very happy with that, especially from the 4th.

    Round 1 Pick 5
    LW Thomas Landry II @Doomsday

Thomas Landry II was drafted 5th overall by the Prague Phantoms, and is looking like a solid future prospect for the young expansion team. He was able to put up great numbers in his last season in the VHLM with the San Diego Marlins averaging 2 points per game on the season. With 60 goals and 45 assists, Landry II is a future offensive star with upside on his defensive abilities. Definitely a great pick by Prague and we all look forward to his productivity in Prague in this upcoming season.

    Round 3 Pick 35
    G Woody McPine @HearnNation67

Woody McPine is a sturdy goaltender that is a future consideration for the goaltending position in a couple of seasons. McPine shows an unwavering steadfast attitude, resembling the hardiness of a good chunk of wood. Prague looks forward to testing his abilities in the coming seasons as current goaltender Brick Wahl is on the way out and goaltender Andrew Crawford is looking to tend the pipes in the near future. The position is up for grabs in the upcoming seasons, and Woody McPine will definitely be considered for the position.

    Round 4 Pick 41
    LW Jack John @GoadenGoalie35

Deeper into the draft Prague decided to pick up another winger, Jack John. Currently being considered as a checking line forward, although he shows improvement in his ability to find offensive numbers. It will take a few seasons for John to find his place in the VHL, but we have seen even greater rises to glory in the VHL, so we will keep an eye on this late pick as he improves.

As the S70 regular season comes to a close I am left with a very confused perspective on my player, Jerry Wang. Cutting out his incredible hot streak at the start of the season, Wang had an incredible 15 points in 67 games. Despite minimal contribution however, Wang posted the best +/- in the league (+27), 5 more than the next closest player rookie phenom Erik Summers and notorious mascot/forward Gritty who both held a +22. So what gives?
To start we have to look back at who played with who, as this should give a bit of context as to how one develops their +/-. I'm going to look at the lines being ran at the end of the season and operate under the assumption that they were used all season, despite knowing this is entirely untrue. Wang played on the wing alongside Michael Gary Scott and Shawnomir Jagr. On the backend Brock Louth and Kevin Low also played with this line. Summers played big boy minutes in Helsinki on the first D-pair alongside breakout star Guillaume Fontenette. The forward group that ran with him was made up of Kronos Bailey, Julian Borwinn and Erik Draven, a force to be reckoned with. Gritty centered Dan Bailee and Mat Tocco on the second line, backed up by Vladmir Pavlov and Oskar Lagesson.
What does this tell us? With Wang it was a tale of really abusing the circumstance. Vancouver is one of the best teams in the league on paper, and while Wang didn't have the talent (or TPE) to produce, he sure was on the ice with the leagues elite every night. Louth and Low take up the 2 and 3 +/- positions among defensemen behind Summers, and were both closing on 60 points. Jagr tied HHH for the most points in Vancouver with 80, and MGS put up a nice 69 as well. When you look at that, it sort of make sense. Something still doesn't seem right, however. See Summers and Gritty both have a substantial TPE edge over Wang, Gritty well past the 500 mark and Summers closing on 600 himself. If it were merely a case of being in the right place at the right time, I struggle to see how a sub 500 TPE player would get that much of a benefit.
AND THAT MEANS ITS ORIGIN STORY TIME BABY! THATS RIGHT! If you mean to tell me that Jerry Wang could pull this shit off on his own, Scott (hehe) free, with no outside help, I'd laugh at you. Haha, I'm doing it right now. Because THATS RIDICULOUS. ITS BLASPHEMOUS, HERESY EVEN. Jerry Wang is cashing in on his days in Halifax, cursed by that Satanist cult. Wang can be surrounded by success, so much success that he leads the league in +/-, but he can have NONE OF IT. Gone are the days of Wang putting up a respectable amount of points, far less putting up almost league high numbers. He is doomed to live the most mediocre, unimpressive life one could live, be the most average hockey player ever to grace the VHL.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Wang is forever flaccid.

With my first (partial) season in the VHLM finished, I thought I would do a little reflection on the year. It was a huge honor to be signed by the Las Vegas Aces to be their starting goaltender. It started off a bit slow, taking 6 games to get my first win against the Halifax 21st. It felt like fate, I had my friends and family at that game. It was a tight game, Hex Valentine played great for the 21st, but we managed to come back from down 2 goals to send the game to OT, thanks to The Boi getting the tying goal. Big shout out to Julian Dalvao for getting the goal and helping me get that first W, and the rest of the boys who all played their hearts out. The rest of the season was full of ups and downs, and I finished with just 7 wins, along with 23 regulation losses and 3 OT losses. Next season (wherever that may be), I hope I can have a better win percentage, as well as improve my save % (0.855) and goals against average (5.31).
While I would’ve liked to get more wins, we still managed to squeak into the playoffs in 8th place to play the mighty Minnesota Storm, who had finished in 1st place. This set the stage for a monumental upset and some great stories. Unfortunately, we couldn’t pull it off and got swept in 4 games. While my save % improved from the regular season (up to 0.877), my GAA took a hit (6.25). Clearly, I have some work to do this offseason if I want to have a long career as a starter in the VHL.
My plans for the offseason so far are pretty lowkey. I’ll be heading back home to stay with and help out my parents at the tree farm. I’ve saved up most of the money from my first year salary and plan on buying them some new equipment and maybe some more land. I also have plans to donate some money back to my community, repaying all those who helped me along the way, and as well, I’d like to set up a charity in my sister’s name. Hopefully it will focus on road safety, both for drivers and pedestrians.
I have plans to meet up with some former teammates from school throughout the summer to work out, do some general training, and just have some fun. Hopefully I’ll see them in the league next year with me. Toward the end of summer, though, I have plans to meet a goalie coach to work on some aspects of my game that need work. I want to be as focused as possible going into next season and do my best to bring a championship to whichever city drafts me. I’m happy to play anywhere, as long as the team wants me to be there.
Looking forward to getting back on the ice and seeing the guys again.

    The Life of Woody McPine

Woody McPine was born on the outskirts of a small town in Nova Scotia, the youngest of 4 children to Willow and Ash McPine. He has 2 brothers, Ash Jr. and Oakley, and 1 sister, Juniper. The family lived in a little cabin in the woods and had a thriving Christmas Tree business each December. The remaining 11 months of the year money was tight for the family, and as a result, Woody never played organized sports until he entered high school. The kids are all very close, and never have anything negative about their lives growing up in such circumstances.
Being the youngest of 4 children meant that Woody got last choice of what role he would be whenever the siblings would play together, and when they played hockey in their yard, he was almost always the goalie. Ash carved each child their own stick out of the surrounding forest, while Woody made his own pads out of garbage bags stuffed with leaves. He didn't have a glove or blocker. For a puck, the kids used a sanded down chunk of wood.
Growing up, Woody had a lot of chores to do, which helped to build, not only his strength, but also his discipline. As a result, he never got into trouble much at school. Teachers did note, however, that despite living so far away from his classmates, he was very popular and quite the social butterfly. He was often found in a large group of friends, usually joking around or playing some sort of game. Friends have said that he always dominated whenever it came to schoolyard sports or other feats of strength. Everyone knew he could be something great, but unfortunately his family's financial situation made that impossible.
Other than succeeding in schoolyard sports, Woody's best class was, naturally, physical education. He consistently got the highest marks in his class. This is where his academic prowess ends, though. Woody was not a very good student when it came to classes such as math, writing, and science. Everyone assumed that he would follow his father's footsteps and one day co-own the family business with his brothers and sister. Fate, however, had other ideas.
One winter, shortly after he turned 12, a classmate of Woody's, John, received a new pair of skates as a gift from his parents. John was an only child and didn't need the extra pair, so he decided that it would be a good idea to give them away to his less fortunate friend Woody. Up until this point in his life, Woody had never worn skates, so John offered to teach him. So, after the Christmas rush of the Tree business, Woody, with permission from his and John's parents, spent many weekends at John's house learning how to skate. The community saw how much this young kid loved being on the ice, and slowly but surely, more equipment donations started pouring in. Woody, and his family, were thrilled and overwhelmed by the support, and pretty soon Woody and his siblings were regulars at the local pond where they would play shinny for hours and hours. It quickly became clear that Woody possessed a remarkable skill in nets, and his friends pushed and pleaded for him to join their team. But Woody, as bad as he was at math, knew that his family did not have the money to make that happen.
And so, Woody never thought much about a future in hockey. It was just a fun thing to do when he didn't have to do chores, or learn the ins and outs of the family business. This all changed, however, when tragedy struck the family. One day, Juniper and her friends went for a walk to the park. The roads were slippery and somehow, June slipped, fell into the street and was struck by a car. She was rushed to the hospital immediately. For several days, the family watched over her, praying, as she slipped in and out of her coma. After 5 days, she passed away at the age of 16. While she was awake, she would mutter things under her breath that were difficult to hear. On her last day, she whispered to Woody "Find a way." Woody knew what she meant. Juniper had been a big supporter of him pursuing a career in hockey, even offering to get a job to help pay for it. But Woody always refused. He didn't want to put any extra stress on the family. But now, he knew he had to go for it. He was starting high school the next year, and he would try out for the team and wear #16, to honor his sister.
He made the team  as the new starter. The school and community once again came together to help with the funds the new, superstar goalie would need to play. He refused to take any new gear unless it was absolutely necessary, but was very grateful for the help with travel and road meals. That year, the freshman goalie backstopped his team all the way to the championship finals, where they ultimately lost to their rivals from the next town over. Woody was awarded rookie of the year.
The next year, Woody and his team went undefeated all the way to the finals, where they would again face their rivals. This year, Woody shut them out for the championship. That summer, Woody was invited to a hockey camp in the big city of Halifax. And with some help from the community again, he went. He was invited to play for a city high school, where he would get more exposure and opportunity. He accepted the offer, and took his new team to the 2nd round of playoffs. That year, at the age of 17, Woody accepted a contract from the Las Vegas Aces of the VHLM. He says he plans to use his new found money to give back to the community that helped him get so far, repay everyone he could, and most importantly, finally give his family the financial comfort that they deserve.
