Heading into the VHL Draft in s72 as a first gen breakout star many scouts Spence Elsby had pegged as a late first rounder. With some questioning his physical strength and need in improvement against stronger opponents on the puck, lacking this ability, he dropped a bit and when he was still sitting there mid-way through the second, Helsinki Titans GM @Jubo07 did his thing and snagged Superstar prospect and Powerplay specialist Spencer Elsby
Elsby would go on to help his Philadelphia Reapers S72 Reapers roster for the record books to a regular season title as well as win Gold at the WJC while being a major leader in both roles serving as Co captain of the Reapers alongside another Titans rookie Bob Helminen and Winning gold and raising the trophy together as part of the leadership group during the S72 WJC with another fellow Titan and hailing from the same home country Co Captain partner Valtteri Vaakanainen.
VSN: All right, the playoffs – you guys have Malmo in the first round. Size up the series for us.
Elsby: I know they’re a good team. They’re a hard working team and they have a lot of skill young AND old and nothing to be taken lightly. So, we have to be disciplined and work off their defense low and get lots of shots on net.

Ive always believed confidence is key, if you dont believe youre the best , you never will be.
2) What is a statistical goal of yours for the playoffs?Individual statistics mean nothing to mean in the playoffs , My only goal is to WIN!
3) Who do you believe makes it to the finals from the North American conference? (Seattle, Calgary, New York, Vancouver)Seattle has impressed me all season, and to be honest , its playoff hockey anyone can win any night, if that werent the case , the team shouldnt be in the league....
4) If you were to choose a Titan to shoot on a penalty shot who would it be?Spaz ???? obviously hahaaha would anyone choose differently !?!

At the end of S73 at first glance if you ONLY look at the Leader board for the Top Scoring rookies you would think right away Hylands will have the highest odds of winning RoTY being one of only two player to have a point per game average finishing the season with a total of 76 points in 72 games, 3 points ahead of 2nd and the only other rookie to achieve the point per game mark youngster VHLM Phenom Adam Syreck. However if you take just a small look and look into the stats more in depth with a guy like Syreck who if the voting list shows only Goals assists and points Adam would have a very high chance of receiving the most votes after a quick glance at leader boards. However when you take a deeper dive (a simple click) and look at other factors of Syrecks game and the actual impact and influence he had towards his teams success, Sadly while being on the ice when his team scores while accumulating 73 Points over the 72 game span of a season Syreck was an abysmall (-63) this instantly that Syreck’s defensive game needs a lot of work. Not to knock the high speed skating sniper but looking at his historical +/- as well its proven that’s a weakness in Syrecks game and with his effectiveness on the defensive end really knocks Syreck down a few rungs on the RoTY list when considering how much the other individual rookies impacted their team with correlation to the role their team had them in and the teams success this season.
The Rookie leaders for scoring list also has something that stands out and that is that 9/10 the players in the top ten are from The Expansion London and Chicago organizations as well as Malmo. Here is where we need to look at where these rookies on teams like CHI and LDN that were given a chance most rookies don’t have and that’s a shit load of ice time as well as a major role playing huge minutes and being relied upon as a #1 or 2 scoring option where as certain rookies with more skill and had a much more productive and consistent season, These are the intangible data that must go into consideration when making these choices.
For example another play on the top 5 for rookie scoring the defenceman out of London Offensive defenceman James Rose. Now James couldn’t haven fallen into a better opportunity for himself and his career. After being Helsinkis 3rd draft choice in the S72 Draft and spending s72 in the VHLM with Houston in a sad season in Houston where James didn’t progress at the pace he wanted and found himself as part of a transaction sending him to the expansion London team for the start of S73 , with James leaving Helsinki his opportunities changes instantly , going from 5th or 6th D on the Helsinki depth chart to the #1 D option in London where his team will be heavily relying on his offensive abilities and saw Rose play 1st line power play and against the leagues top players logging massive minutes. These extra opportunities and ice time gave Mr. Rose an advantage over other rookies that have always been higher on the totem pole than James, such as stars like Alex Letang, Latrell Mitchell , Spencer Elsby and Liam Flaten. Each of these defencemen I just listed were all drafted higher than James and have pretty much always been recognized over James, however with the opportunities James Rose made no mistake in proving his offensive abilities translate at the VHL level. No downplaying the recent success of James Rose however, we’ve got to look more into this and take a look at how did James actual affect his teams wins and losses and if his play on the ice has been as instrumental and apart of the success and consistency of there respective team. A lot more digging and diving into the analytics, like Passing % , corsi , Losses pucks from hits as well as blocked shots and controlled zone entries as well as even fights should all be factors that go into the decision making when choosing who the top nominations are for ROTY , there are WAY too many other stats and parts of the game that aren’t on the stat sheet that really show which player is most deserving of being on this list.
This is when the grind really begins, its playoffs , its time to prepare for the draft for all of us GMs and scouts working overtime and extra hard to ensure the best analysis and most detail goes into the preparation of all this leading up to the draft as well as the upcoming awards that are always highly anticipated, First things First though , and thats me myself as a player Spencer Elsby and the Helsinki Titans and the playoffs , that my focus right now and I cant explain in words my excitement for my 1st VHL playoffs game.

As a GM or AGM in the VHLM theres one massive variable that is “almost” out of your control other than draft picks, and that’s waiver signings and having a “full roster”. It happens every season where there is either one or multiple teams in the league with 5 or fewer active users leaving the roster with WAY less than enough players to even put together 2 full lines let alone 3. The waiver system in the VHLM allows for each team to make a pitch to each player immediately after being created. The issue however is staying ontop and always keeping an eye out for the new players as well as making sure you have a roster that can entice the user as well as making a pitch that makes the user feel valued and ensure that they are happy and confident they have decided to sign with the team that offers them the best opportunities. Unfortunately you can have the best pitches , the greatest opportunities offered to the users and no luck, This is the issue in Philadelphia this season after going all in moving all the S73 draft picks and 3 big name returning players for future draft picks. This left the Reapers roster shorthanded from the get-go. The Reapers Organization have zero worries about recruitment issues and very confident in our ability to bring in player in the following weeks in attempt to secure a playoff spot.

Look out for America's next Hockey Phenom out of Scranton, Pennsylvania Joakim Winsalot. The young 15 year old talent is already projected to be a top pick in the S75 VHL draft. Joakim has broken ALL( Literrally EVERY SINGLE) US-HIGH Prep School Records for Goals, Assists, Points in a season as well as most career Points, Goals and Assists by any US-HIGH Prep School EVER throughout his three season playing HS as an 8th Grader playing on the Senior team to most recently as a sophomore in only the 10th grade with another three seasons of HS eligibility. The season that recently came to an end where Joakim shattered multiple single season records with 67 goals in 28 GP along with 57 Assists for a total of 114 Pts in 28 Regular season games with New-Hampshire Prep. Joakim was spotted at the Reapers practice this week training with the big boys on a formal invitation from AGM Spence King who is also Assistant Director of VSN Scouting has had a close eye and lots of talk with the Winsalot family over the past two years and as a local boy and this Skill level Philadelphia Reapers AGM Spence King was quoted "Joakim is a special player, His age means nothing, honestly it doesnt , he stepped on the ice with us the first time when he was 14 and the whole team in S72 fell in love with Joakims effort and I made sure not to let any player know his age , to the Reapers players he was just a small player out there fighting for a roster spot. In reality Joakim was no exaggeration outplaying Reapers Legend Bud Knight. Joakim has been in Ann Arbour since his season ended training at the US-National Development Team Program Center with the U-20s. Joakim will be in the VHLM sooner than later and everyone should take notice NOW , and get ready for Sir Winsalot to continue his takeover.

1) What a wild ride. 11 game win-streak last week. First place in the league. Describe to me your excitement level at this moment.
My excitement level right now is ... Honestly i dont know the english translation for the Finnish word describing my feelings of excitement as well as knowing that the 11 game win streak and being in 1st place means nothing until the playoffs. Thats where my mind is at right now. A coach of mine in Bantam AAA said something that has always stuck with me "The regular season games are just extra practice on-top of our team practices, The regular season is just 72 "exhibition" games to use the skills and systems we learn in practice preparing for the real deal when the playoffs start!" .
2) Where should we look to improve (if anywhere) as the deadline approaches?If Helsinki were looking to improve at the deadline the only possible thing i could see the Titans doing would be possibly moving a younger goalie for future picks or a player in his last year maybe ? i really dont see any big moves coming soon.
3) 17-2-1 record at home for the Titans. What can we do to bring that same success to the road (11-10-0)?I have been waiting for this one , Its easy ... Portion control with eating on road games out of the country, In Finland the restaurants and culture have adapted to a much healthier lifestyle being one of the countries with the longest estimated human lifespan. When on the road the boys tend to leave that mindset at home and over indulge in north american food filled with presevatives and artificial who knows what causing them to be much slower on the ice and when decision making due to treating their bodies poorly.
4) Who has been an unsing hero for us this season?Unsung hero is hard for this Helsinki team !! With Hafkey,Draven,Summers, Ross, Vaak and Okada all above a point a game and all so consistent throughout the season , take those names out of the picture and it would have to be without a doubt be "The Italian Stallion" Jared Spaz @Spaz Spaz has been amazing all season and his growth in production frrom last season is already incredible and his consistency is on the same level as the other six All-Star caliber players.

11 is Huge , one loss by 1 goal to Malmo is nothing, 1 small different bounce and it would be a 13 game streak , and continuing to by into the system and work together like we have been and play like were still keeping a streak alive , it also gives us a new goal to try and surpass as well, not one player in the LR doubts it either that we have the ability to fly high and continue to get the wins. The vets on this team made it clear to us all on day one what is and is not acceptable with this team on and off the ice regarding discipline and always being a classy team. The vets and sophomores even really helped all the rookies making the transition from the Megalodon in an inland lake to a tadpole in the Ocean. This means you’ve got to find your niche and really see where you excel the most and in which way you can make the biggest contribution to the team, In doing so that means “Learning your Role”. For player like my very good friend Not only did the Roster players help us with this most important part of the transition as well did (the undoubtedly #1 Candidate for GMOTY) @Jubo07 made sure we know our place and that’s to “Learn your role” like Draven @Jbeezy76 and Hafkey @McLovin, @SpazJared Spaz along with @Erik Summers are all such great leaders off and on the Ice, These men are always making a point when defending a teammate laying it all on the line knowing everyone in blue has your back more than Tony The Tiger likes Frosted Flakes. , We are getting better every day I see it in everyone’s play in practice, the chemistry in the drills and the intensity increases each day and it’s such a great feeling the atmosphere here in Helsinki. Legendary fashion designer Jacobim Mugatu recently quoted the Helsinki Titans “So Hot Right Now. Holding onto the top spot isn’t going to be easy and i know i have to put in every ounce of effort i have in my body each day to fine tuning my skills to be the most help possible to this teams ultimate goal and mine which is to win games , i will sacrifice my body and soul for any one of you

With the WJC coming up I know there are a few of us that will be participating, Myself I have been fortunate enough to play in every WJC tournament I’ve been eligible for. In S71 My Grandfather was the GM of Team Asia and I was lucky enough to play for him on Team Asia after being the last cut from team Europe. Team Asia went on to Win the round robin with the tournaments best record and bring home some of Team Asia’s first pieces of hardware in a Silver Medal losing to the Superteam Europe. In S72 I was voted by my teammates as Co-Captain of team Europe alongside my childhood idol and now teammate and great friend Valterri Vaakkainen where we cruised to a smooth tournament with an amazing group of players earning Team Europe their 2nd Gold as many years and completing the Re-peat. Somehow, I missed the applications for this year’s WJC that seems to have come so quickly. If I am eligible and selected to team Europe again this tournament Is going to be no different. I have one goal in this tournament, and one goal only, that’s bringing home gold , not one single individual award entices me more than that gold medal and being part of history in a 3-peat for Team Europe. After being heavily relied upon tournament and playing a major leadership role along with the extra experience from playing in so many elimination games over the last two season has given me invaluable experience that has allowed me to grow into the clutch player I am today and when it’s the dying minutes I want nothing more than to be on the ice, winning for my country is everything to me
