.sniffuM reacted to youloser1337 in Finally Donating
Sorry it took so dang long (I'll take the blame), but here is the thread where I finally make those donations from this poll:

So I decided that I'd just round up and make it a nice even number.

$300 to my local animal shelter, North Shore Animal League

    and...

$300 to the American Cancer Society!

So some notes on why I picked these two.

    1. They were the two most popular in the poll.

    2. North Shore Animal League is the shelter where I got my second dog, Milton. He was the best dog anyone could ask for. Unfortunately during the holiday season 2019 we had to put him down because of an aggressive cancer in his lungs. It was absolutely heartbreaking. What was supposed to be a simple look around the shelter one day turned into the best friend anyone could ask for. I still miss you Milton

    3. American Cancer Society because of cancer in the family. I lost my grandpa to cancer when I was just a little kid. Seeing my mom break down telling me was horrible. It's amazing how fast it was when I visited him in the hospital to the news. On top of that a few years ago my dad was diagnosed with Cancer. I was working the night shift at my job, so when I came home at midnight with my mom and sister both up crying I knew something was wrong. Life isn't fair. I hope no one has to experience what I went through those few nights. Currently he is being monitored every few months. They are keeping an eye on it to make sure it's still in a good spot. I knew I had to chose ACS after these experiences.

So there you have it. What was supposed to be ~$500 turned into $600. I hope this inspires someone to make a small donation somewhere.

Have a great day VHL ❤️

.sniffuM reacted to Garsh in Reflecting on the Career of Griff Manzer
Well, well well, what a time to be alive.  You, the reader, are witnessing an actual point task by Garsh.  I think there is a saying that goes “Born too late to explore the Earth, born too early to explore the universe, born just in time to explore a Garsh media spot.”  Something like that.  Today I will be reflecting on my first player, the late, great Griff Manzer.

To truly understand Griff, I’ll talk for a moment about getting myself started in the VHL.  Griff was created October 4th 2019, I believe he was the last person created for the S69 (nice) draft class.  People started creating for S70 on October 7th.  Yup, I missed the cutoff by 3 days.  Mind you, this was before the catch up TPE existed.  I was starting as fresh as fresh can be.  Now if you are thinking to yourself, “Garsh, surely someone told you to retire and recreate to get an extra season.”, you would be correct.  @Renomitsu did mention this to me during my second week.  I didn’t really understand what Reno meant, so like most things I don’t understand I ignored it.  Also Will had to manually create Griff’s thread, this has nothing to do with anything else but it is unique in today's modern VHL.

I bring up how late I created because I think when you consider how much time I threw away, Griff actually did alright for himself.  He was drafted by @Beaviss in the second round at number 23. Here are his VHL career totals:

He only had a 6 season VHL career because of spending so much time in the VHLM.  I had the option to come up a season before I did, I think I ended up skipping most of the training camp TPE and stayed down. I think I mostly took Beav’s advice on staying down.  It’s interesting to think what could have been with another season, but he would have been coming in at somewhere between 250 and 260 TPE, and he probably would have been playing 3rd line minutes.  Certainly he most likely would have gotten more hits and SB.  Manzer had a pass first play style for much of his career so at least some more assists probably would have come his way as well.  Who knows though, the possibilities are endless, I could have doubled my short handed goals!  Some other things to consider about Griff’s stat line: 1)He primarily played on the second line for most of his career.  2)He led or was in the hunt for leading the team in shots blocked every season.  3)Vancouver was a good team in Griff’s time, making the playoffs every season but 1 he was there (preventing inflation of shots blocked)

While I never expect @Victor to ring me up and tell me, “Hey my dude, Griff Manzer is being inducted to the Hall of Fame, congrats!” (I’m pretty sure this is how Victor talks).  I feel good about how Griff turned out.  In @GustavMattias recent S69 redraft he had Griff moving up into the first round and being picked at number 12.  I do wonder how him moving up so far reflects on the draft class as a whole, but I’ll leave that topic to the big brained VHL scholars out there.
I feel that Griff was a good player, and I am very happy with how his career went. I think he would have been an asset for pretty much any team.  I also feel that he can also serve as an example of the kind of player that people can expect from me.    My earnings aren’t capped, but they are consistent and I think that will help GMs draft my future players appropriately.
P.S. Griff’s retirement is what cause Beav to leave.  “Pics or it didn’t happen” you say?  I got your pic right here baby!

.sniffuM reacted to Renomitsu in Thoughtful & Efficient Engagement With Sim Leagues?
Is this a stock photo? You're darned right it is.

"I Don't Have Much Free Time. How Do I Maximize My Sim League Experience?"

I wish I had a clever intro for you, good reader. But I want to cut to the point: with limited free time, what strategies work to make sim leagues and their vibrant communities enjoyable?

    1) Be intentional about WHEN you engage with sim leagues.
I know that the busier I am with work, the less I want to do it. It's tempting to try to alt-tab to or pop the app open for Discord depending on whether I'm sitting at my laptop or trying to escape to my phone while I'm in the hospital or in clinic. As a result, it's not uncommon for me to ditch my phone in the team room while at work, or just close out of Discord entirely if I know I have work to do remotely.

Whether you're an adult with a job or a student with a particularly busy schedule, it's important to set expectations for when you can access sim leagues. I'm firmly of the opinion that adults are just big kids with more responsibility – and as much as I'd like to goof off at work, I know constantly distracting myself with sim leagues will make me more anxious about the work I already have to do (to say nothing of incoming calls or consults I'll eventually need to make). The quick dopamine burst I get from interacting with sim communities for a few seconds during the day is nothing compared to the dread I feel if I fall behind what I need to do, whether that's at home or in a clinical setting. If I get my work done, I feel infinitely freer knowing that the time I spend on sim leagues is mine to enjoy without anyone else suffering.

    2) Know your boundaries – don't be afraid to set league servers to MUTE when you need to get a lot of work done.
Access to recreational activities is often the largest driver of whether they're used or not. In my case, seeing the little white tab next to a league that's currently active almost feels mandatory to check (for those of you in a ton of servers that might not be the case). And I know I'm not great at completely ignoring the big red dot on Discord on desktop or push notifications on my phone when I get a chance to check the screen during the day. So what do I do? I turn all of it off.

At the end of the day, whether I respond to a PM, locker room message, or main server message in 1 minute or 1 day won't change the course of my experience in a league – or at least it hasn't thus far. I do like being prompt in responding to DMs (as it avoids any likelihood of me forgetting about said message, as I've done a handful of times). I've actually extended my mutes to just about everything in sim leagues, though I still do get a good chance to respond to them when I'm off work. While that means I haven't been seen as much around sim leagues – even on my 'off' days – it means I have a much healthier relationship with how and whom I choose to engage sim leagues and users. Not everything has to be on my terms, but it's awfully helpful when I can feel a semblance of control.

As I said in my last bullet, adults are just big kids with more responsibility. Nothing about age necessarily makes you more mature, even if you get more chances to express your maturity and grow from your experiences. When I taught 4th grade math and science a half-dozen years ago or so, I learned the importance of setting expectations with my students. I do the very same for myself and it's helped my relationship with and enjoyment of sim leagues immensely. It helps me understand the gravity of my actions and the opportunity cost I pay if I violate the expectations I set.

    3) Find a single day (or a primary day + backup day later in the week) to get all of your updating done.
This might be the most helpful bit of advice. My schedule is a little more amorphous than it was during my schooling, primarily because I don't know 1) which day each week I'll have off and 2) modifiers like clinic half-days, medical education, cross-coverage of admissions, or 24 hour shifts until perhaps a month or so before they happen (and it's not always easy to remember perfectly without a calendar). Having a singular day during the week when you do your updates is nice, but not always perfect if there are time-sensitive, non-weekly tasks (it also applies to leagues that have rolling update approval like the VHL!). If you know you'll always have a given day 'off' each week where you can get your tasks done, a single day can be enough. But if you have a schedule that shifts from week to week like me, sometimes it's nice just to have a backup day to make sure you can get your updates in. For me, writing point tasks happens on Saturday. As a matter of fact, I've got several lengthy articles stored up because I knowingly dedicate a specific amount of time on a specific day to writing them.

If I don't have Saturday off (as is the case this week), I default to Sunday. Since I have several articles going at once, I can usually get weekly claims done in about 15 minutes by doing sim attendances (as applicable), press conferences, and job pay as needed. Similarly, I have a specific time each day (while working days) to check sim leagues who update with weekly point tasks that are time-limited to the same week – for example, EFL's weekly games or VHL Fantasy at the start of each season. Sometimes this check is 10 seconds long, but I always allocate a very limited amount of time to them (5 minutes at maximum). Does that mean my answers are always the best-researched and perfect? Well, no. I don't get many VHL or EFL predictions correct. But it does mean I tend to earn even more than most capped earners, as many don't participate in extras (or occasionally forget practice facility – oops!).

But really, these three points are more or less the same. Set boundaries and expectations for yourself and it's pretty hard to go wrong once you get into a routine.

    4) Keep people in the loop; communication is key.
There are few users GMs like more than those that are responsible, high earners, and good communicators – or at least that's what I've garnered from GMing in the EFL. For example – I drafted Frostbeard's defensive back and J.Dragon's running back to the Minnesota Frontier early on in my tenure. The former of the two went inactive within a couple of seasons to pursue real-life aspirations, and the latter said "hey, this is the month I'm going to stop being active." Getting communication early on in that period helped me glean their true draft value, and both understood that their role would be reduced in Minnesota (though I still stand firm that Frostbeard's defensive back deserved DRotY – 5 INTs is no joke at safety!).

I've tried to be as clear as possible with my intentions, both with Aloe Dear this offseason, as a GM, and with any role that I've taken. When being hired as a mod, for example, I was exceedingly clear with Fong that my set end date coincided with entering residency. For Historian in EFL, I wanted to be clear about what I set out to accomplish with respect to seasonal & career records, and I wanted to be transparent about limited activity with regards to awards committee over there, too. Giving others a baseline understanding of what to expect from you helps them make informed decisions about hires for jobs; if you stick with the baseline you set, it's difficult to be disappointed with the work you do. If you exceed expectations with regards to activity and contribution, great! Everyone's happy. Eventually, as is the case in the real world, your track record starts to speak for itself. If you stick to your plans, others understand they can take you at your word even if life happens.

    5) Make your off-time productive! Multiclaiming is your friend.
This has been a real lifesaver for me. I would not be active in sim leagues anymore if I had to make a new 500 word article every single week (sometimes you just wanna write 2,000 words, amirite?). Some people consider writing articles to be a drag; it's not for everyone and nobody should be judged for avoiding writing media. But for me, getting words out on the page is infinitely easier than expending creative energy on graphics – especially since I'd want to hold myself to a given standard and would burn out of making graphics comparatively quickly (all the more power to you if you can regularly make quality graphics).

As I said above, setting aside a specific time of the week for updating and getting point tasks written is key. I just sit down for about 45 minutes or so to write each week, and that's made it very easy for me to stockpile media. This doesn't really apply to students on summer break or anyone with a ton of free time (again, this applies to people struggling with work hours and other obligations), though it can be helpful for making your time on sim leagues more productive if that's your goal. Even if I stopped working on sim league material permanently and could only dedicate 10 minutes a week, I'd still be able to claim 6-point PTs for a while at the very least.

    6) If it feels like a chore, don't do it.
Sim leagues are meant to be fun – at least from my perspective, they should never feel like an obligation or a job unless that's what you want (or you really don't want to hand off your precious sim league to someone else as an individual in a position of authority). GMing in the EFL – which I truly did enjoy many aspects of – began to feel like a chore a handful of seasons in, though I still do see it as a job with a ton of positive aspects. But after a certain point, I stopped having fun with GMing. It wasn't my team's fault, as I had a lot of really nice users in my locker room; I don't think it was entirely my fault, though I should certainly shoulder some of the blame; and I don't think it was the league leadership or the users at large that were responsible. But it was eating into how I experienced other parts of the league: I didn't really pay attention to my players' success (individual statistics or team success), updating felt like an duty rather than a recreational activity, and I always worried about what decision I made that might hurt my team's long-term success.

Some of that is expected and even in the job description. But I felt less and less inclined to do the other parts of sim leagues that kept me initially motivated to take the job in the first place. That's not the case for other GMs, commissioners, moderators, etc. – that was specific to my experience. And when I realized that was the case, I made it clear that I intended to step down. I continue to appreciate all of the fun sim leagues have to offer all the more tangibly when I made it less of an obligation.
This bullet point might mean that you take a break for a week… or a month… or a few years until you find yourself in the right mental space to really enjoy doing it again. I did as much with the VHL between my first and second, as well as between my second and third players. It's also part of the reason why I retired my first EFL players when I did. That doesn't mean do everything you want on a whim (as tempting as that is) – I still tried to give my GMs a heads-up well in advance of retiring my players, usually a couple of seasons. Occasionally that luxury of far-in-advance notice isn't possible, especially when real life crops up. And I'd like to think that's okay, too.

.sniffuM reacted to Telkster in Malmo’s team, plus some new signings
    Intro
Malmo has ended up having a wild off-season, but not in the way many were thinking. While many would have predicted trades to be the topic of discussion, this is not the case as Malmo hasn't made a single trade the entire off-season. The bigger news ended up being that Malmo didn’t move any of their 3 1st round picks. As the draft went on, it became clear that the picks weren’t gonna move. This ended up being a great thing as Malmo got an arguably top 5 player in the draft, as well as 2 more solid late 1sts. In this media spot, I’ll be going over what Malmo roster looks like, as well as breaking it down by position.

    Signings in Malmo
There were so many teams looking to get Odinsson from free agency, but with the luck of a dice spin (literally), Odinsson ended up in Malmo. This was a massive signing for the Nighthawks, which really solidified the forward group not only in this season, but down the road as well. The signing helped solidify the forward core in my opinion. Odinsson already has 7 points in his first 3 games with Malmo, and I’m sure hylands will be eyeing to extend him next off-season. Kamenov also decided to sign back with Malmo for what will be his final season, after receiving offers from both Malmo and Moscow. Hylands found his backup goalie as he signed Carson to a deal to give Tretiak some help.

    Right Wing
Odinsson and Deathwalker will man the right side this year. Deathwalker is coming off of a breakout season, as he put up 58 points last season. This may be tough to maintain for the short term for Druss. With the plethora of forwards now, there’s only so many points to go around. But Druss will remain one of the tough guy forwards that has no trouble putting up some points. Mourning joins the team as a rookie this year after being drafted later than many expected. His playoff performance in the M last year shows he has all the potential to be a 1st line forward in the future.

    Center
The center position may have the least amount of ‘star power’ compared to RW and LW, but depth is not lacking here one bit. Sosa can run a top line no problem, and come out the other side consistently getting a point per game. Or in this season’s case, 9 points in 3 games. Dayne has a solid enough build to play comfortably on the second line, and has 2 points in his first 3 games this season. Dayne is coming off of back to back 30G+ and 50A+ seasons, but he is getting older,  so no one will be upset if either of these stats isn’t achieved this year.

    Left Wing
The left side certainly has its fair share of big names for Malmo, with Muffbeav and Telker leading the way. Both of these players notched 40+ goals last season. With the growth of Druss, and the addition of Odinsson, wing is without a doubt Malmo’s strongest position. Steel joins the left side as he enters his rookie season in the big leagues. He’s coming off a massive 110 point season in the M, and could prove to be a great depth or 2nd line winger.

    Defense
This is probably Malmo’s weakest on paper position, but there’s plenty of potential on the back end. Lead one more time by Kamenov, he’s still the main centrepiece in terms of tpe. Kamenov has had 3 seasons in a row of 40A+, and it wouldn’t shock me at all if he extends that streak to 4 seasons. Sova is coming off a great rookie season, where he had 40 points. 2 assists through his first 3 games is an early sign he could easily beat that in his second season. Sova is the main centrepiece of the future on the backend, so expectations for him aren’t super high at this moment, but growth will continue be a priority for him.

Wu and Wakaro both come in for another season to provide some more depth. Wu enters his third season with Malmo, as he had a bit of a drop of season last year compared to his first year with Malmo. Wu will be hoping for closer to 50 points again this year. Wakaro is an older more depth player for Malmo, but he’s already got 2 assists in 3 games this season. Wakaro could be looking to beat his season best of 36 points. Malmo also have 2 rookie defencemen to introduce. JaredN Jr, and Ranogajec. Ranogajec was a late 2nd round pick from S77. His last 2 seasons in the M saw him put up really great numbers in Philly. JaredN Jr joined Ranogajec last year in Philly as well, and had an insane 98 point season from the blue line. Both of these young players have the potential to be great top 4 d man.

    Goalers
This is another position that Malmo is very strong in not only this year, but going forward. With Malmo’s defense not quite up to some other teams high end offense Tretiak may suffer GAA wise. To add to it, it looks like Malmo will have many high scoring affairs this season, just with the way the team is built. Despite all that, Tretiak is still one of the top goalies in the league. We’ll see how well his stats fair this season. Carson comes in to back up Tretiak as I stated before, Carson went 8-0-1 as the backup for Prague last season, so there probably wasn’t a better guy hylands could have gotten for the job.

Overall, I really like what the team looks like this year. We may not be looked at as top cup contenders, but I think most people around the league have to agree that Malmo is a dark horse at the very minimum now. I enjoyed writing this article, and I hope my teammates, as well as others enjoy reading it too!

S78 saw the underdog Nighthawks take another step forward in their rebuild/retool. They made the play-in round for the second straight year and this time advanced past Helsinki to the next round only to lose to eventual champion Warsaw. Many players took great steps in their development and the future is exciting for this young team from Malmo! Announcing the S78 Malmo Nighthawks Team Awards as voted by the players and management.

    Condor Adrienne Award (Best Defenseman)
    Randy Marsh @oilmandan

The truculent Marsh was his usual self and made sure he was even more of a pain in the ass in his final VHL season. He led Malmo defensemen in most categories and helped the Nighthawks become the only team this season with two 300+ hitters. He matched his career-high in goals with 18 and set career-highs in shots (228), penalty minutes (260), hits (312), and blocked shots (162). He also was a stud in the postseason posting career-highs in goals, assists, and points with a point-per-game showing (3-7-10) in 10 games. His 260 penalty minutes also led the league and he finishes his career 6th all-time in VHL history with 1450.

    Rookie of the Year
    Tui Sova @v.2

Drafted 7th overall in the S78 Draft, the skilled defenseman from Fiji provided an instant boost to the Nighthawks’ blueline. He worked his way into a Top-3 role and became reliable in all areas of the game. His offensive game improved as the season went along collecting 8 goals and 32 assist for 40 points which put him third in scoring among all rookies. Defensively, he handled himself with poise and assertiveness as he placed second on the team in blocked shots (169), third in penalty minutes (108) and fourth in hits (148).

    Unsung Hero
    Carson Walkers @Cwalker

Walkers blossomed into a consistent source of secondary scoring and defensive acumen all season long as the third-year winger set career highs in most categories. His 21 goals were fifth on the team and he chipped in five power play goals, three game-winners and converted both of his shootout attempts. He also provided grit with 162 hits, good for third on the team and was tied for second on the Nighthawks with a +18.

Deathwalker saw steady improvement in his sophomore season and his non-stop motor caused havoc for opposing teams. He doubled or tripled his numbers from his rookie season scoring 23 goals on 288 shots both numbers fourth on the team. He also led the league with a monstrous 374 hits and was 7th in penalty minutes with 191. This is his second straight award.

    Most Gentlemanly
    Kevin Wu @kevinscix

Although he had a down year offensively, Wu nevertheless was a solid contributor at both ends for Malmo with 35 points and 123 blocked shots. He was also a quiet leader and his calm demeanor carried into the locker room and on the ice. His calmness also attributed to him only taking nine minor penalties all season in spite of playing over 18 minutes a game.

    Most Valuable Player
Muffbeav @.sniffuM, Brendan Telker @Telkster, Artem Tretiak @Molholt

This was the most contested vote as three of Malmo’s stars fittingly tied for the award for Most Valuable Player. Muffbeav and Telker led Malmo offensively all season with Muffbeav flirting with a goal-a-game pace for the first quarter of the season. Telker led the Nighthawks in points with 90 and Muffbeav led the team in goals with 45. They were both among league leaders for goals and shots with Muffbeav leading the league with 531. Telker was also among league leaders for power play goals (14) game-winners (6) and hat tricks (3).

Tretiak held the fort between the pipes and announced to the league he was a bonafide starter. He led the league with a sparkling 0.924 save percentage and was Top-5 in shots against and shutouts. His focus and determination helped power Malmo through rough stretches and into the playoffs.

    Nighthawk of the Year
    Druss Deathwalker @animal74

Deathwalker garners his second Nighthawk of the Year award on the heels of his first season as team captain. Proving that he wasn’t just all boast and bluster, he accepted an increased offensive role and still led the league in hits while providing boisterous energy on the ice and an encouraging presence in the locker room. He strives to help his teammates get better for the good of the team and the ultimate goal.

    3-Stars Award
    Muffbeav @.sniffuM

After such a sensational season, it’s no surprise that Muffbeav claims Malmo’s 3-Stars award for S78. He led the team in goals and shots and created offense from everywhere and thus he was selected 1st Star a team-high nine times. He also had a team-high 17 star selections for a total of 380 points. Although, his co-MVPs Telker and Tretiak weren’t far behind with 330 and 310 points respectively.

Yukon GM @Juice brought it to @VHLM Commissioner  attention that things were beginning to get busier in his life, and between various real life responsibilities, it was better to have someone new who could give the team 100% attention rather than him trying to linger on with the team and perhaps having divided attention as a result. In the same conversation, it was brought to our attention that the same is true of @fromtheinside, and so the whole Yukon staff would be vacating.

As a result, we've chosen from one of our final selections from the Ottawa job (which was coincidentally less than a week ago so all this is still fresh) and the Yukon GM job will be going to a guy that is currently an AGM for a team in the bigs (shockingly not @Esso2264). This is a guy who's been a quick climber over his time here, and has been in the last few picks for about 2-3 prior VHLM GM spots.
