Hey everyone, and welcome to the S98 VHL awards! I hope you’re all ready, I would like to just start off by congratulating all the nominees. In the interest of time I'll be posting winners as I complete writing the section, hope you’re all ready to look back at the season that was! Your S98 nominees are:

Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy (Top Rookie):

This season saw some great rookies enter the league with really promising futures; among those rookies three stood out from the rest;

 

Peyalo Bolivar @SMYLS4 - The London United rookie played a major role in their success this season which saw the team return to the playoffs on the back of their 33 goals and total of 77 points to lead all rookies in goals!

Mikko Tuomala @flyersfan345 - The first of two LA defensemen to be nominated, Tuomala mad the most of their situation to post 66 points and 19 goals while putting up impressive physical statistics as they had 122 hits and 173 shots blocked.

Bubbles LaFleur @AJW - Led all rookies in scoring with 79 points and broke the 20 goal mark as a rookie, LaFleur had a really great season for the LA Stars!

LaFleur - 8, Bolivar - 3, Tuomala - 0

 

Dustin Funk Trophy (Most Improved):

A lot of players took massive steps forward this season, the players nominated for the Funk are:

 

Deadpanda @Alex - Saw their save percentage jump from a 0.915 to a 0.927 and picked up the league's best GAA.

David Pastanap  @Jubis - Posted a career high in every offensive stat including the jump to being over a point per game for the first time in their career.

Simons Worst Nightmare @Florida Man - Scored 18 more goals while maintaining the same number of assists and taking a step with their physical stats.

Slava Kovalenko @OblivionWalker - A change in scenery paid off as their +/- went from -38 to +38 and they took a step to boot!

Herold Benson @Benson - saw a 9% increase in save percentage and allowed just under half a goal per game less.

Scott Boulet Trophy (Two-Way Forward):

Every season we take a look at players who changed the game not just offensively, but at the defensive end too, these players demonstrated spectacular
play at both ends of the ice:

 

Antonia Bucatini @CowboyinAmerica - Led Davos in almost every stat, Bucatini had 91 points and 244 hits for a great two-way season!

Grimgor Ironhide @FrostBeard - Ironhide continued to be one of the best two-way forwards in the league with almost 100 points and just over 250 hits

Maverick Goncalves @leandrofg  - The S97 Boulet winner, Goncalves picked it up again this season, leading the league in points, having over 200 hits, and keeping PIMs relatively low.

DEFENSEMEN AWARDS

 

Alexander Valiq Trophy (Offensive Defensemen):

This season saw several defensemen have great regular seasons on the offensive side of the puck, the four nominees are:

 

Guntis Gavilrovs @Girts - Led all defensemen in goals with 25, finished the season with 89 points

Mina @Baozi - Led defensemen in points with 91 and also cracked the 20 goal milestone

Bollos de Trueno @Thunder - Led the league in assists with 79, finished tied for 2nd in defensemen points!

Gavilrovs - 8, Mina - 3, Trueno - 0

 

Jake Wylde Trophy (Top Defensive Defensemen):

Simons Worst Nightmare @Florida Man - Had over 150 hits and shots blocked and the league's best +/-

Leif Reingaard @Zetterberg - Maintained a positive plus minus on a rebuilding team prior to a move to a contender where they excelled in the defensive zone

Jillian Woods @jacobcarson877 - Their solid defensive play was a big reason for their teams success, as they carried Moscow's defense

Conference Prince-de-Galles @UnkemptCL4PTP - Hit everything that moved as a part of Helsinki's one off season of regular season success

Guntis Gavilrovs @Girts - A huge reason for New York's regular season success, Gavilrovs put their body in front of as many shots as possible while having over 225 hits

Nightmare - 5, Reingaard - 4, Woods - 1, Prince-de-Galles - 1, Gavilrovs - 0

 

Sterling Labatte Trophy (Top Defensemen):

Bollos de Treuno @Thunder - Led all players in assists with 79, and was defensively responsible for the Wolves

Guntis Gavilrovs @Girts - The only player nominated for both previous defensemen awards, Gavilrovs truly had a standout season

Simons Worst Nightmare @Florida Man  -A defensive minded defensemen who put up very good offensive numbers this past season and  had over a point per game for the first time in their career.

Mina @Baozi - A breakout season, saw Mina lead all defensemen in points essentially from start to finish!

Aidan Shaw Trophy (Best Goaltender):

Goalies continued to steal the show this season, and several stood out above the rest, they were:

 

Red Panda @Lemorse7 - Tied for the leagues best SV%, and had the 2nd best GAA with a 2.09

Dalkr Vidarsson @KaleebtheMighty - Also tied for the leagues best SV%, a major reason for Toronto finishing 1st in the North American Conference

Deadpanda @Alex - Led the VHL in every major goaltending statistic (GAA, SO, and wins) except for SV%

Jorgen Lovstrom @Pifferfish - Also tied for the leagues best SV% (lol), and wins with 43!

David Knight Trophy (Top GM):

Teams wouldn’t be the same without their GMs, these GMs went above and beyond to propel their teams forward throughout S98:

 

@dstevensonjr - Took Toronto back to the top of the conference when it looked like a rebuild was on the cards

@v.2 - Despite being appointed late, they managed to turn Riga into a true contender in a very short amount of time

@Frank - Continued to make Vancouver a top team in the league, and completely shuffled things around when a early season plan went wrong

Daisuke Kanou Trophy (Playoff MVP):

These next players really shined in the playoffs, propelling their team on a spectacular run, all while proving themselves invaluable to their team:

 

Maverick Goncalves @leandrofg - A Major reason for Moscow's playoff run, Goncalves continued their regular season play into the playoffs

Ya Boi Oven @Doomsday - Led all defensemen in playoff scoring, the only defensemen to have more than 20 points 

Phil Sakic @Phil - Led the league in goals with 14, came in clutch in the finals as they lit up Moscow

Adi Dassler @BOOM - Led the playoffs in points, and along with Sakic was a major reason for the win over Moscow

Brett Slobodzian Trophy (Most Outstanding):

The only award that is voted on by everyone, the Brett Slobodzian Trophy is awarded to the league’s most outstanding player, this season there were six nominees; Jarmo Ruutu @jRuutu, Jorgen Lovstrom @Pifferfish, Red Panda @Lemorse7, Deadpanda @Alex, Maverick Goncalves @leandrofg, and Forum Content @frescoelmo! This season we saw one of the largest margins of victory in recent history as Maverick Goncalves picked up almost 50% of the total votes! Congrats!

Scotty Campbell Trophy (MVP):

Now the award we’ve all been waiting for, these players not only had spectacular seasons, they all were instrumental to their team’s success and exceed all expectations:

 

Forum Content @frescoelmo - Forum Content delivered on their namesake and exceeded expectations throughout the entire season 

Adi Dassler @BOOM - Carried Calgary through the regular season and put up very impressive numbers.

Dalkr Vidarsson @KaleebtheMighty - Stood on their head all season to propel Toronto to the playoffs and a 1st place spot in their conference

Jorgen Lovstrom @Pifferfish - THE reason why Helsinki exceeded expectations this season and kept them in the battle for the most part

How does the league mvp end up on the second all VHL team lol BoG is trippin

Looking at these awards from a rookie perspective, it strikes me just how hard and how long each of the nominees had to work to reach this point. For me, such recognition remains little more than a distant dream that I can barely conceive of, somewhere far beyond the horizon.

 

It's a shame there's only one trophy for each category, as every nominee deserves special recognition for being so dedicated to building their player week in and week out. This type of devotion is rare these days, so I'd like to take a moment to commend everyone who demonstrated the necessary commitment to even make the list!

 

Whether you realize it or not, you're all a special breed, true bell weathers who consistently hang tough no matter the storms of real life. 👏

 

So congratulations to the winners, and to the nominees as well, since every name appearing in this thread is about as far from being a loser as you can possibly imagine!! 🏆
