S68 Expansion Megathread

Tuesday, September 3rd, 4:00PM EST (20:00 UTC)

Welcome everyone, new and old members alike, to the S68 VHL Expansion Megathread. In this thread, we will announce the two new team names and locations, the rules for the S68 Expansion Draft and Expansion Lotteries, as well as the rule changes that will be made to accommodate the VHL expanding to twelve teams for the first time in its history!

We will begin, with the two new franchise names. The logo unveiling for both teams will be coming during the Expansion Draft on Thursday, however, we are extremely pleased to introduce our two newest franchises:

@diamond_ace:

Spoiler

Introducing one of the two new VHL teams, this team will go in the EU conference, and fills a gap in the league's hockey coverage. The Czech Republic has a long and storied hockey history, but to this point the VHL has yet to tap into that market. This team changes all that. It's not exactly a surprise that this team is in Prague, but it's time to reveal the full identity. Brought to the league by former Calgary Wranglers GM Jason Glasser, welcome your new Prague Phantoms!

@Enorama:

Spoiler

From the same city that brought you the birth of a nation, the District of Columbia (D.C.) ushers a team into the league as the VHL's latest addition to the North American conference. For those with even partially-keen eyes, the location should come as no surprise, but the team name may catch some off guard. The D.C. Dragons will be competing in the VHL starting in S68, helmed by fledgling GM Eno Rama!

With the league now expanding to 6 teams in each conference, we will also be introducing Divisions, with 4 divisions consisting of 3 teams in each conference. These Divisions will be aligned as follows:

Spoiler

NORTH AMERICAN CONFERENCE

Division 1

Calgary Wranglers

Seattle Bears

Vancouver Wolves

Division 2

D.C. Dragons

New York Americans

Toronto Legion

EUROPEAN CONFERENCE

Division 3

Moscow Menace

Prague Phantoms

Riga Reign

Division 4

HC Davos Dynamo

Helsinki Titans

Malmo Nighthawks

The Playoff format will also be seeing a first for the VHL, as it will now be expanding to 8 teams, 4 per conference. This means that there will now be three full rounds of playoff hockey in the VHL, all of which will be decided in a Best-of-7 format, with the top team in each conference facing the 4th place team, and the 2nd place team facing the 3rd place team, in the Conference Semi-Final. The winners of that round will move on to face each other in the Conference Final, while the winners of that round will move on to the Continental Cup Final.

With this format, Division winners will be guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, but not home ice. There will also be no cross-over should 5th place in one conference hold a better record than 4th place in the other.

There are a couple other minor changes that will be adressed later in the off-season, including the official names for the 4 divisions, but these are the most important/pertinent changes to the league following this round of expansion! With this business taken care of, let's move on to:

S68 Expansion Rules

With the first 2-team expansion since Season 31, we will see the re-introduction of a true Expansion Draft, which will be taking place on Thursday, September 5th, 2019! With a 2-team expansion comes an additional lottery, whereby the winner will decide if they pick 1st in the Expansion Draft or take the higher Draft Slot in the S68 VHL Entry Draft. The full rules are as follows:

  • There will be an Expansion Lottery, whereby the winner will decide if they pick 1st in the Expansion Draft or take the higher Draft Slot in the VHL Entry Draft.

    Then what's the point of divisions? They were already guaranteed a spot since there are 4 teams making it and being 1st means you could only be as low as 4th in the conference.

    Scheduling is the main thing. With 10 teams things were nice and even. Face everyone 8 times and hit 72 games. Unfortunately the schedule doesn’t work out that well for 12 teams so the options were to introduce divisions to split things up or have teams getting their extra games randomly assigned. Divisions is nicer since we can get some actual co trip over the schedule plus it introduces the concept of divisional rivalries which the league hasn’t never really had before; at least in a formal sense.

    Looks like Bek already answered, but it's also an eye to the future, to prepare for future expansions.
