Finnish side look to remain atop VHL
 
Helsinki, FINLAND - Heading into last season, only 29 of 117 submitted VHL Predictions selected the Helsinki Titans to win the Continental Cup. Compare that to this season, where, as of this moment, they are the overwhelming favourites with 48/83 selections, it is clear that league perception of the team has changed. After winning their first Continental Cup in three straight tries, the Titans feel they are finally getting the respect they deserve.
 
On paper, the team has done nothing to lose the trust of its fanbase, or VHL fans in general, as they are returning nearly their entire roster that ran through the league last season, with only 4th defenceman Bald Guy leaving the team, through trade. In his place will be inspiring rookie defenders Guillaume Fontenette (@okocha5), drafted 30th overall in the S66 Draft, and Derek England (@PenKnight), drafted 16th Overall in the more recent S67 Draft. Also joining the fray for Helsinki will be rookie Center Jordan Tonn (@MexicanCow123), taken one spot ahead of Fontenette in the '66 draft, as well as goaltender Kolur Bjoernsson (@jblock3), who will look to spell incumbent starter Alexander Pepper (@Sonnet) during a long season.
 
Among Titans returnees, Pepper, Julian Borwinn (@Jubo07), Matt Thompson (@Beketov), and Dan Montgomery (@BarzalGoat) will look not only to defend the team's Continental Cup title, but the 10 individual awards that were won, among them, in S66. Sidney Crosby (@SidTheKid87) and Jesse Wilson (@monkeywrench15) also look to continue their progression, after being arguably the league's best defensive pair last season, putting up a combined 151 points, 280 hits and 253 shot blocks.
 
With the team doing naught but improving, they head into the season looking to make good on their status as Continental Cup favourites, with sights set on a 4th straight Finals appearance!

1) Since it's not been too long since you've joined the league, what are thoughts on the league so far as a whole?
Seems pretty good so far, the portal looks really sleek and nice, I could definitely see myself doing some articles for that.
 
2) Are there any areas in the league that you would like to see a change/improvement? 
I haven't look at enough stuff yet but perhaps and "Other" option in the drop down box so you can type in something that doesn't fit.
 
3) The VHLM Newsletter launched earlier this week, did you read it and was it helpful to you?
I haven't' seen it no.
 
4) What are your aims this season in the VHLM?
I want to score a tonne of goals and win my team games, a lot of playing time would be a top priority as well.
 
5) With the teams starting to take shape, who do you consider to be the favourite for the VHLM Founders Cup?
I'd need to get a better grasp of the league and what makes a team good in the sim before I can answer that question.
 
6a) Is there any player on your VHL team that you're particularly looking forward to playing with when you make the VHL? (For players who were also in the VHL Draft)
Probably  Guillaume Fontenette @okocha5 or whoever @gorlab's player is. No idea what teams they're on though.

Haven't been selected yet, think I might have missed it? Anyway, if they aren't the best team before I join they definitely will be after.

All this talk in the NHL about offer sheets has gotten me thinking about why we don't have them here. Since careers are only 8 seasons long and 3 of them are spent as RFA's it makes sense. What happens if you get drafted by a team you don't like? or get drafted by a GM that wants to bench you for cap reasons? Adding Offer sheets would add some additional protection to the players and not harm the General Manager.
 
This was the scale I was thinking of.
 
200+ TPE -  2nd round pick
300+ TPE - 1st round pick
400+ TPE - 1st round pick + 2nd round
500+ TPE - 1st round pick + 1st round pick
700+ TPE 1st round pick + 1st round Pick + 2nd round pick + 2nd round pick
 
Example: Hunter Hearst Helmsley TPE: 589 gets an offer sheet from Vancouver Wolves (not possible since I cannot sign myself)

Riga would then get Three days to accept the contract or they get compensation.

RULES:
Teams cannot go over their cap if a contract is signed. The next soonest picks that match the compensation would be given. If the three days pass without an answer from the opposing General Manager the compensation is given. If the offering team does not have any of the picks required the offer is void.

What's up VHLM'ers? The finals are under way in both leagues, and the off-season is nearly here! Fret not newbies, the off-season will be when you can finally start to be involved and be well on your way to joining a team! The season should be over by Monday at the latest (one game per day of finals, each series could go seven!) and then a schedule for the off-season will be released. This will tell you when the draft is, when training camp starts (TPE!!!), etc. Stay tuned! Here's what this week's issue will include.
 
 
1) Uncapped TPE Opportunities: Any time there's a one-off or once-a-season point task available to enter, you'll find out about it in the early headlines of the article.
2) League Recap: The middle of the Newsletter is generally based around keeping you up to speed with what's going on around the league, be that changes to how the league works, new features or how the current VHLM season is progressing.
3) TPE Earning Guide: The bottom section of the Newsletter follows the same format each week. There, you will be provided with the links you need to get to the regular TPE earning activities.

Practice Facility
Every week, players in the VHLM are granted 2 free TPE every week for simply posting in the practice facility thread. If you haven't already, go post your player name and "+2" here.
 
Career PT - Player Biography
Once per career, you can write a biography about your player for a whopping TEN uncapped TPE! The biography must be at least 1000 words in length while detailing the history of your player's life, starting off the ice and eventually working up toward it. A more specific rubric can be found on the page here. When claiming the TPE for this task, make sure you submit it under via portal as "Other" --> "Biography"
 
Career PT - Rookie Profile
Once per career, you can write a rookie profile that specifically details your player's strengths and weaknesses on the ice. Think of this like a scouting report, where you're telling GMs what to expect out of your player. A more detailed rubric for the rookie profile can be found on this page. This report must be at least 500 words in length, and focus only on your player's on-ice attributes. When turning this task in, be sure to submit it under "Other" --> "Rookie Profile"
 
 
The VHL Fantasy Zone
Every week, players are given the chance to guess the results of upcoming VHL games. This comes in two different forms- the weekly Pick 'Em's (which are worth 2 uncapped TPE for getting all of them correct), and the weekly Score Prediction (which is worth 3 uncapped TPE for getting correct). Even if you don't get it right, it's worth a shot to take a look at the games and give it your best guess! If you want, you can even cheat and copy the guesses of a member that's already posted. These will be posted in this subforum every week.
 
Player Store- First Generation Doubles Week
If you've got the money (1.5m in player store cash, the amount of every VHLM contract) you can purchase a doubles week if you're on your first player. For those who haven't had one before, a doubles week allows you to claim an extra 6 uncapped TPE if you submit a media spot, graphic, or podcast! 
 
The VHLM Fantasy Zone
The VHL Fantasy Zone's younger brother allows you to earn even more uncapped TPE for guessing the correct winners and scores. However, these predictions are only available to players within the VHLM, so make use of them while you can! The VHLM Fantasy Zone differs in its TPE rewards, in that the weekly Pick 'Em's are only worth 2 uncapped TPE, but guessing the correct score is worth 4! These will be posted in this subforum every week.
 
The First Generation Bonus
As a thank you to the newer members for sticking around and participating in the league, we're offering 10 free uncapped TPE for your first player, once they cross the 100 TPE milestone! If you've passed that mark, or are about to pass that mark, make a post in this thread and use it to submit an update. To make the job of the updates easier, please select "Other" when applying the update and fill out the box as seen below:

 
2) League Recap
 
So, the playoffs are almost over. Eight teams fought hard, but only two remain. The Ottawa Lynx and the Philadelphia Reapers. Both teams have had terrific seasons, and have an equal 8-1 record in the playoffs thus far. The Reapers got here by dispatching the Saskatoon Wild, and the Lynx paved their way by sweeping the Halifax 21st (though 3 of their 4 wins were in overtime!). This should be a good series, and could certainly go the distance. Game 1 should be simmed sometime Tuesday (today!) evening.

-          The new Player Store makes purchasing things for your player very easy! Click the "Player Store" option under "Player Menu" on the Player Management screen. Or by just clicking this link. 
-          You can claim your contract money by clicking this button "Claim Income" button under the "Menu" heading.
-          You can click the blue "Purchase" button under the item you wish to buy, and it will be approved or denied by staff.
-          TPE purchases can be applied under the "Other" option when claiming TPE. You do not need a link to claim these items. Updaters can check if you have successfully purchased it or not.
 
First Generation Bonus

Recruitment
Recruiting new members to the league not only helps the league by filling out team rosters, but it also sets you up to earn some lucrative TPE! To find out more about the rewards for recruiting members, go HERE. On top of that, there is a 1 uncapped TPE reward for upvoting the weekly Reddit post (It has not yet been released for this week, but I recommend keeping an eye out for it).
 
Weekly Capped Point Task Opportunities (You Can Earn Up To 12 TPE From The Following)
-          You can submit either a Media article of 500 words, a Graphic or a ten minute Podcast for 6 TPE. If you don’t have time to submit for any of these this week though, there is Welfare available to claim for at least 4 TPE.
-          You can submit a 150 word article and a Player Card for 2 TPE each. You can also submit a five minute Podcast for 3 TPE.
-          You can get a maximum of 2 TPE by answering and asking questions in the Press Conferences. If you are short of answers, you can answer questions in the VHLM Press Conference for 2 TPE.
-          You can receive a maximum of 2 TPE by reviewing other people’s Media/Graphics/Podcasts. Check out the guide to reviewing HERE.
-          There is weekly VHL Trivia where you are asked two VHL-related questions, answer both correctly and you will earn 2 TPE for the week. In addition, players will be able to earn up to 6 uncapped TPE at the end of the season, 1 TPE for every week they submitted for trivia. 
 
Uncapped Point Task Opportunities
-          There is 2 TPE to be earned from posting in this week’s Practice Facility
-          There is the VHLM Pickem and Predict the Score (in the VHLM Fantasy Zone). If you correctly guess the results, you will earn uncapped TPE for your player! You'll be able to participate in the VHL Fantasy Zone as well.
-          You can submit a 500-word Rookie Profile for 8 TPE and a 1000 word Biography for 10 TPE. These two are one time only point tasks.
-          If you haven't already, make sure to spend some of your contract/sponsorship money on the First Generation Package in the Player Store. It's an exceptionally cheap purchase that gives you five uncapped TPE.

It's been a rough start for the Mexico City Kings, losing their first two games 14-3 to the higher seeded Saskatoon Wild. 
 
Several questions have plagued GM @Nykonax over his rostering decisions over the two-game stretch:
Why did the Kings start an unnamed accountant in goal? Why did star winger Henrik Zoiderberg, the only Kings top-six forward across both games without a negative +/-, play a combined 30 minutes across the two games? (injury concerns are abound!) Why did the Kings combine for under 40 shots across both games? Where is Waluigi in all of this?  
The GM released a statement to his players recently, saying, "...let's stop the complaining, and win the next couple games." 
 
Under this apparent ambivalence, Captain Michael Gary Scott (@Motzaburger) held an all-players meeting, calling for his fellow skaters to rally and defending Nykonax, quoted as saying, "It just seems awfully mean. But sometimes, the ends justify the mean."
 
Brave words from a brave man.
 
So what's next for the Kings, going into a 0-2 series against a higher-seeded team with little hope of victory in sight? A few recent quotes from players:

Dallas Jones is our choice for WJC MVP after a stellar performance. Calgary's 7th overall selection in the S65 VHL Entry draft was one of the key pieces that lead to a victory for the USA team,The defenceman lead the round robin in points and was an excellent defensive presence for the tournament winning USA team. This was a well-deserved victory, as Dallas had an impressive 14 points in the round robin.

Case Martell: Chasing The 1K Club
 
Recently, I read an article by @Jubo07 regarding Julian Borwinn eclipsing the 1000 TPE mark. Congratulations, Jubo! I thought to myself, "That's what I want. That!" For years, and I mean literal years, I have watched the VHL from afar. I've watched it grow through sixty seasons of history not as a fringe member on the sidelines, not in the stands, but as a community member just on the outside. In the time I've watched from a distance, I could have had multiple careers here. Several. In the end, something always cut the interest before it even took off. I've always had an interest in the VHL, but never enough to know how to engage in a sport that just hasn't hit the mark for me. I attend Lightning games. I enjoy them. I'm just not passionately involved in the game like I am football and I'm not a smark for statistics in the sport like I am in basketball. I just don't know the sport well enough to dive in and apply myself in this league. Until now.
 
What I do know is sim leagues. I know them very well. It's hard not to understand them, really. Do a task, earn a point, update attribute. It's very easy. With the ever-expanding partnership between the SBA, EFL and the VHL, it's never been easier to partake in all of them at the same time. Why haven't I taken advantage of that? I don't know. So, let's go. I consider today the day I begin chasing that 1K club. Not just to hit a number of emphases, but to prove to myself I can apply myself in the VHL in a long, meaningful way. If I hit 1,000 TPE, I can guarantee the experience I have along the way will be well worth it.
 
What I expect to happen is that I will learn to love the sport. I'll learn the sport, in general. I'll grow to appreciate the details behind the surface level entertainment of it. I think player sports simulations are interesting in that we're all playing pretend sports characters, but there is some surprising good that can come from them. You can really improve your work as a designer through endless weeks of sig work and iteration. You can really fine-tune your ability to write after seasons and years of crafting stories. You can also really improve your knowledge of a sport like I plan to do here.
 
Additionally, I think player sim leagues are a really good way to build friendships with people you'd otherwise never meet in your life. Over the years I have been in sim leagues, I have managed to make some quality sim friends. I have a long history with some of the biggest names across the entire three-league partnership. I used to shoot the shit and get creative with Molholt long before the SBA. I made friends with Turner years before I practically dragged him back into the sim community to run the EFL for me. I go way back with Godfather Beketov. I've become real-life friends with mwhazard following a simple Duke recruiting letter two years ago. You never know who you're going to run into, what you're going to have in common and how much of a relationship you'll develop with people in these things. My hope for this run with my newest player, Case Martell, is to surround myself with some quality dudes, get engaged in some quality locker rooms and see where things take me.
 
That's what I'm here for. That's the byproduct of chasing the K club to me, so here goes nothing.
