With the WJC starting today, Team Asia has set its eyes on what will no doubt be an uphill battle as they plan to repeat as medalists. Their first 2 games being against gold medal hopefuls Team Canada this will surely be their first major test to see where they are at as a team before they go up against Team World in game #3. I have decided to take some time to introduce each member of Team Asia in depth.
Starting us off we have…
Evgeni Shevkov (C) @Syzygy:
One of the few returning players from last year's team where Shevkov earned a silver medal, Shevkov hopes to replicate his success this season. Last season for Team Asia Shevkov had 4 goals and 6 assists for 10 points in 10 games, and along with Frank Funk Jr. was one of the driving forces behind Asia’s success last season. During the regular season Shevkov played for the DC Dragons of the VHL where he recorded 7 goals and 14 assists for 21 points in 72 games.
Jon Strider (LW) @Strider:
Another one of the returning members from last year's team, Strider hopes to fill the hole left by Funk Jr.’s departure alongside Shevkov. During the last WJC Strider recorded 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points in 10 games. Strider spent his S77 in London where he had 4 goals and 17 assists for 21 points in 72 games.
Willy Myers (LW) @Willy Myers:
Myers is entering his first WJC, but comes in as one of the few members on Team Asia with VHL experience as in S76 Myers scored one goal in 6 games for the Prague Phantoms. Last season Myers developed into an elite scoring threat when he lead the VHLM in goals and total points with 59 goals and 54 assists for 113 points in 72 games.
Duncan Montana (LW) @124715:
Much like Myers, Montana is also coming off of a dominant season in the VHLM for Saskatoon where Montana recorded 52 goals and 59 assists for 111 points, good enough for second in the league behind Myers. Montana was drafted 38th overall in the S77 VHL draft to the Moscow Menace.
Braxton Hunter (LW) @dshervill:
Hunter is coming into this WJC with some WJC experience, just for rival team Canada as Hunter recorded 2 assists in 10 games during last season’s tournament. Since then the 72nd selection in the S75 draft has gone onto live out his childhood dreams by playing in the VHL for the Prague Phantoms where he scored 5 goals and had 13 assists for 18 points in 72 games.
Nicholas Mariani (LW) @Mistxh J:
Mariani is coming off of a solid season with San Diego in the VHLM, which saw him put up 38 goals and 54 assists for 92 points in 72 games. Mariani was selected 43rd overall by the Prague Phantoms in the S77 VHL draft. Mariani was also recently voted to wear an ‘A’ for Team Asia.
Alex Johnston (RW) @Alex_J32:
Johnston is the first of our two players who have yet to be drafted to either the VHL or VHLM. During last season Johnston was very productive and developed quickly during his stint with Yukon which saw him produce 24 goals (tied for 10th in the S78 VHL draft class) and 26 assists for 50 points in only 52 games. Johnston was also voted team MVP by his peers.
Calvin Hobbs (C) @2hawk:
Hobbs joins Team Asia following a solid season for Minnesota of the VHLM in which Hobbs scored 13 goals and 29 assists for a total of 42 points. Hobbs was selected 33rd overall by the New York Americans in the S76 draft and will be joining the Americans next season.
Brock Hampton (C) @SamTwoSix:
A S78 VHL draft hopeful, Hampton is coming off of a solid season for Halifax of the VHLM where he scored 18 goals and 16 assists for 34 points in 72 games. Hampton was selected 35th overall in the S77 VHLM draft by Halifax.
Bahram Kamkar (D) @Eagle Eye:
Kamkar, the 46th overall selection in the S76 VHL draft by London. Just finished his 3rd and final season in the VHLM which saw him put up career highs in all offensive categories with 8 goals, and 42 assists for 50 points in 72 games. Next season Kamkar will be starting his VHL journey as he joins Moscow.
Vasiliy Grigorev (D) @Noxalpha:
One of the recently voted alternate captains for Team Asia, Grigorev was selected 32nd overall in the S77 VHL draft by the Chicago Phoenix. Last season saw Grigorev capture the Founders Cup with Miami where he scored 10 points during their playoff run. During the regular season Grigorev had 10 goals and 31 assists for 41 points in 72 games.
Masami Iwasawa (D) @CrazyCaityCat:
The second player on this roster who is eligible for both the upcoming drafts. Iwasawa is coming off of a solid rookie season in the VHLM which saw them score 13 goals and add 24 assists for a total of 37 points in 72 games. Iwasawa is projected to be an early selection in both VHL and VHLM drafts.
Nixon Caldwell (D) @Kendrick:
Caldwell is coming off of a dominant season for Saskatoon which saw him put up 25 goals and 62 assists for 87 points which put him 3rd in the VHLM for defencemen scoring. Caldwell was drafted 20th overall in the S77 draft to the Seattle Bears. Caldwell will be joining the Bears next season.
Andrew Bowman (G) @BrutalBoost:
Bowman, the recently voted captain of Team Asia and one of the few returning members from last season’s team. During the S76 tournament Bowman recorded a 0.974 save percentage and a 1 GAA during his one and only start. During S77 Bowman assumed the starting role for Saskatoon in the VHLM where in 70 games Bowman had a 0.900 save percentage and a 2.49 GAA. Needless to say if Team Asia is going to have a chance to repeat as medalists Bowman will have to be at the top of their game.
Bastian Greiss (G) @ThatsGreissy:
Greiss, the final player on this team that is eligible for both the upcoming drafts put up solid numbers on a sub-par Mexico City team in the VHLM. Greiss had a 0.892 save percentage and a 3.55 GAA average over a 39 game stint with Mexico City. The most impressive thing about Griess’ time in Mexico is the rate that he developed at quickly becoming the top goalie in the upcoming VHLM draft and will put up stelar numbers no matter where he lands this coming season in the VHLM.
There you have it, your S77 WJC Team Asia!

Today I have the great pleasure to introduce the leadership group that will lead Asia as we hope to replicate our success from season 76!
These individuals were voted by their peers, GM, and AGM to wear the C and As for Asia.
Without further ado, the S77 captain and assistant captains for Team Asia!
Captain - Andrew Bowman (G) @BrutalBoost
Alternate Captain - Vasiliy Grigorev (D) @Noxalpha

Before I get started here I just want to say Thank you to both the WJC commissioners @bigAL and @rjfryman for putting this whole thing together and I am sure that we're in for one of the best tournaments yet! I would also like to introduce my AGM @fromtheinside.
Without further to do I would like to introduce the S77 WJC TEAM ASIA!
SpoilerThis forward core has shown themselves to be effective on both the sides of the puck. Lead by returning Team Asia players Shevkov and Strider, as well as WJC veterans like Braxton Hunter this group does not lack experience in the WJC. A one-two punch of Shevkov and Hobbs down the middle will greatly benefit the top 6, leading the 3rd line you'll see Brock Hampton who showed what he is capable of last season with Halifax. On the left side of the ice we have Strider, Myers, and Montana all of whom will surely be tough to stop. The right wing consists of Hunter who had a solid season for Prague last season, puck-moving forward Mariani, and VHL draft hopeful Johnston.

SpoilerTeam Asia's defensive core is comprised of several veterans from both the VHL and VHLM including S77 20th overall pick Nixon Caldwell to lead this intimidating defence with an average height of 6'4". Both Caldwell and Kamkar showed what they are capable of last season in the VHLM and will hope to carry that style of play into the WJC. Grigorev is coming off of a solid season with Miami that saw them capture the Founder's cup. Lastly Iwasawa a S78 top prospect will have a chance to show the world what they are capable of.
