S71 Hall of Fame Induction

After @Banackock didn't like his Builder induction speech last season, we decided to induct no Builders in S71. Apologies to all aspiring Builders everywhere, you know who to send your hate mail to.

However, we do have two outstanding players joining the Hall of Fame today! It's the first year of eligibility for the now retired S63 VHL draft class and what a class it was. Who's the first name that pops into your head when you think of S63? Ryan Kastelic, the first ever 2,000 TPE player? OK, fair shout but he didn't even make the ballot. The first name that's always come into my head is:

LW - Julian Borwinn, S63-S70 :hel:

RS: 576 GP, 325 G, 380 A, 705 P, +135, 519 PIM, 1165 HIT, 251 SB, 56 GW

PO: 67 GP, 31 G, 41 A, 72 P, -3, 48 PIM, 155 HIT, 22 SB, 7 GW

S66 Scotty Campbell Trophy (Most Valuable)
S66 Brett Slobodzian Trophy (Most Outstanding)
S66 Mike Szatkowski Trophy (Most Points)
S66 Kevin Brooks Trophy (Most Goals)
S66 Dustin Funk Trophy (Most Improved)
S68 Scott Boulet Trophy (Top Two-Way Forward)
S69 Mike Szatkowski Trophy (Most Points)
S70 Scotty Campbell Trophy (Most Valuable)
3x All-VHL First Team (S66, S69, S70)
1x All-VHL Second Team (S68)
One Continental Cup (S66)

Quite a tremendous career by young Julian. Eight seasons, all with Helsinki, seven straight playoff appearances, and four of them in the finals, winning it all in dominant fashion in S66, when the Titans became the second team ever to lose just one game en route to the Continental Cup.

Borwinn was one of the leaders of this Titans mini-dynasty, a captain on four occasions, and the ever-reliable scorer. Top rookie in S63, he broke through in a big way in S66, and then developed his two-way game for a surprising Boulet Trophy in S68. Even in his twilight years, Borwinn managed to snag a top scorer and MVP award in separate season: a true model of consistency. That consistency also meant he cracked the 700-point mark in an increasingly low-scoring VHL: it may be a while until we see Borwinn's achievements matched.

G - Kallis Kriketers, S63-S70 :rig::dcd:

RS: 528 GP, 324 W, 133 L, 37 OTL, 2.23 GAA, .920%, 65 SO

PO: 73 GP, 35 W, 31 L, 5 OTL, 2.37 GAA, .918%, 5 SO

S64 Greg Clegane Trophy (Lowest GAA)
S65 Aidan Shaw Trophy (Top Goalie)
S65 Greg Clegane Trophy (Lowest GAA)
S66 Aidan Shaw Trophy (Top Goalie)
S66 Greg Clegane Trophy (Lowest GAA)
S69 Scotty Campbell Trophy (Most Valuable)
S69 Brett Slobodzian Trophy (Most Outstanding)
S69 Aidan Shaw Trophy (Top Goalie)
S69 Greg Clegane Trophy (Lowest GAA)
3x All-VHL First Team (S65, S66, S69)
One Continental Cup (S63)

The second man inducted often faced Borwinn down in between the pipes of Helsinki's main rivals: the Riga Reign. Kallis Kriketers didn't quite last his full career in Riga, with a late appearance with D.C. but while he was with the Reign, no goalie in the league came close to his achievements. Cup champion as a rookie in S63, Kriketers started accumulating Shaw and Clegane Trophies season after season shortly after that and was always among the top goaltenders in the VHL.

Riga is currently on a 10-season playoff streak, the second-longest ever: Kriketers contributed to seven of those seasons. Other players came and went, but the man in net stayed the same. Then in S69, arguably Riga's best since S63, Kriketers was nearly unbeatable, putting up numbers we hadn't seen in years. He fell just short of a second championship, but his spot in the Hall was secured then.

Voting:

Borwinn and Kriketers both received 15 out of 15 votes, a rare unanimous decision by the BOG. Coming back onto the ballot next season will be: Tyson Kohler, Jakab Holik, Keaton Louth, Jasper Canmore, Sebastian Ironside, Jake Davis, and Joseph McWolf.

Congratulations @Jubo07 and @hedgehog337

First off; huge credit to @Quik for being the architect of that Titans team, starting with Dan Montgomery in S62, and a hugely successful S63 draft bringing Borwinn, Pepper, Crosby and Wilson into the mix (Retirement article here). It was a dream start and all in all a dream career for many of us over those 7-8 seasons. It's a shame we couldn't return the favour and convert better than 1 for 4 in the finals. Here's hoping Vaakanainen can follow somewhat in Borwinn's footsteps. And to be inducted the same year as Kriketers @hedgehog337 is truly an honor. If it wasn't for him maybe Borwinn could have hit 50 another season or two.

Congrats to both of you! That 63 Draft built did all the work of building that Titans team into a real monster, and it's a shame that we couldn't win at least one more. Either way, easiest decision of all was taking @Jubo07 with that #3 pick, and I would have taken you #2 if Spade/Beav weren't fighting so hard for that pick.

Totally unnecessary low blow tbh

That 1 pick drop got you Pepper too. I'm still waiting for my champion ring, btw.

It started off as just a comment on that maybe Borwinn isn't the most famous S63 player, and then cruel Victor came out. Sorry. ?

I expect something nice when Kastelic is inducted in S91

Congrats @Jubo07, Thompson’s partner in crime for that amazing S66 run, shame our builds didn’t mesh as well in S67 but it happens. Definitely one of the more unique players in that you hit your prime extremely late. Could have been an all-time superstar had you struck gold a bit earlier. Still though, can’t complain about a first ballot introduction.

I guess congrats to @hedgehog337 too :P probably the most complaining ever done by a first ballot HoFer haha.
