Alex 3,201
@v.2 With the season approaching the mid way point of the season (wow that happened quickly) it’s time to look at the VHL award races. Throughout the article any value in brackets following a team or player name signifies the total number of VSN members who selected that player to win the award. While you’re here feel free to check out some of the other recent VSN articles below! S81 Under 200 Power Rankings | VHL Trade History - S76 CGY/VAN | The Top Prospect of Every VHL Team Victory Cup The Victory Cup is awarded each season to the team with the most regular season points, as of right now it’s a clear battle between 2 teams with Vancouver and Moscow currently tied for first with 66 points each. Just back from them is Davos with a 28-14-2 record and lastly 9 points back of Vancouver and Moscow is Seattle with a 27-14-3 record. Mike Szatkowski Trophy (Most Points): Rank Player Name Points 1 Duncan Idaho @OrbitingDeath 91 2 Chris Reynolds @Crstats23 89 2 Justin Lose @youloser1337 89 4 Aloe Dear @Renomitsu 84 5 Brian Moreau @weekz /Aurelien Moreau @Frank 81 Kevin Brooks Trophy (Most Goals): Rank Player Name Goals 1 Duncan Idaho 42 2 Chris Reynolds 41 2 Justin Lose 41 2 Jerome Reinhart @MexicanCow123 41 5 Taro Tsujimoto @GustavMattias/Muffbeav @.sniffuM 39 Alexander Beketov Trophy (Most Assists): Rank Player Name Assists 1 Aurelien Moreau 69 2 Battre Sandstrom @Acydburn 61 3 Robin Galante Nilsson @RomanesEuntDomus 59 4 Zeedayno Chara @Jubis 54 5 Jaromir Lemiuex @hockeyis66 53 Greg Clegane Trophy (Lowest GAA): Rank Player Name Goals 1 Tobias Reinhart @Spaz 3.08 2 Kunibuni UnGuri @Berocka 3.11 3 Papa Emeritus @Beketov 3.22 4 Thadius Sales @thadthrasher 3.26 5 Em Em Flex @oilmandan 3.36 Scotty Campbell (MVP): The MVP race this season is pretty well down to a three horse race with only 2 points separating the top three players, a margin so small that anyone of these three players could run away with it at any moment. Of note with the MVP the team you play on makes an impact in the MVP vote as players who typically lead their teams by a wide margin have the best chance to come away with the award. Currently our top three in scoring are Duncan Idaho (4), who sits atop the league with 91 points, Idaho also currently leads the league in goal scoring with 42. Right behind Idaho is Chris Reynolds (1) and Justin Lose (3), both with 41 goals and 89 points. Notably, of the players mentioned Justin Lose is the only player without a teammate in the top 5 in league scoring. Brett Slobodzian (Most outstanding): Similar to the previous award any player could run away with this award at any given moment, the four players who received votes from VSN members correspond directly with the players leading or near the top of each offensive category with Justin Lose (3), Aurelien Moreau (3), Duncan Idaho (1) and Chris Reynolds (1). Other players who received some consideration were Brendan Telker and Jerome Reinhart. Sterling Labatte (Top Defensemen): The race for the top defensemen award is an interesting one so far as there appears to be a favourite and then everyone else. This season Aurelien Moreau (7) has continued to build off their previous season and is already one point back of their career high with 81 points in 45 games, and currently leads the league in assists and defensemen in total points. 15 points behind them is Jaromir Lemiuex (1) whose defensive play has impressed several people around VSN and they currently sit second in the league in blocked shots with 142. Of Note is Battre Sandstrom (0) who only sits 4 points back of Moreau and could close that gap relatively quickly. Other players in the race include Robin Galante Nilsson, Zeedayno Chara, and Hard Markinson @STZ. Alexander Valiq (Offensive Defensemen): The only unanimous decision made was that Aurlien Moreau (8) is currently projected to win the Valiq this season, Moreau currently sits with 81 points in 45 games and is on pace for 130 points this season, the second most ever and the most since season 62. As previously stated Moreau is not in this race unopposed as Battre Sandstrom (0) sits only 4 points back of them and has a slight edge in goal scoring so far this season. Jake Wylde (Defensive Defensemen): The Jake Wylde award is likely one of the most subjective awards for VHL players as it goes to the best defensive defensemen. Currently Artair McCloud @Hoopydog (0) leads all players in shots blocked, however a -38 and only 41 hits likely takes them out of the race. Just behind them in shots blocked sit Jaromir Lemiuex (4) with 142. Additionally Lemiuex has a +8 and 67 hits on a middling Toronto team. Other players who are currently in the running are Hard Markinson (2), Aurlien Moreau (2), Creed @assassin6898 (0), and Lenny Sanderson @Gally (0). Aiden Shaw (Top Goalie): The Aiden Shaw award recognizes the top goalie in the league every season and with that it is always an interesting race to watch. Currently Tater Tot @Trunkxolotl (1) is leading the league in SV% with a 0.928. However, due to Tot having amassed 32 losses already the award may be out of reach. Leading the league in wins right now is Thadius Sales (3) with 33, a substantial lead over Kunibuni UnGuri (0) with 25. Papa Emeritus (3) also is having a breakout season as Moscow’s starter with 23 wins and a 0.912 SV% in only 35 games played. Tobias Reinhart (0) also deserves some recognition here as they currently lead the league in GAA (3.08) and shutouts (4). Christian Stolzschweiger (Top Rookie): At this point in the season the award for the top rookie is as close as they can get with four notable rookies battling it out. Currently on top is Zach Kisslinger II @Kisslinger (3) with 65 points, a seven point lead over the next 2 top rookies in Nathaniel Minion @Minion (1), and Otto Numminen @Otto Numminen (2). Not to be overlooked is Helsinki’s young netminder in Xavier Booberry @CowboyinAmerica (2) who is currently second in the league in shutouts with 3 and sits just outside the top ten in most statistical categories for goalies. Also receiving a vote is Ryan Vidot @Enorama (1) the lone defensemen in consideration here has been a glimmer of hope for D.C. all season long and should they pick the pace up a little bit their season may have a happy ending. Scott Boulet (Top Two-Way forward): The Scott Boulet award is given to the top two-way forward every season and with that Duncan Idaho (7) is coming off of breaking Groovy Dood’s @bigAL streak. This season once again looks to be Idaho’s to take home with him leading the league in almost all major offensive categories as well as hits, of note though Idaho currently sits third in the league in penalty minutes which may prove to be his downfall. Right behind him in hits is Druss Deathwalker @animal74 (1) who currently has 228 hits, 56 points, and only 92 penalty minutes. The only 2 players currently are over a point per game with less than 50 penalty minutes, and over 100 hits are Isau DaMoose @Eynhallow (0), and Alex Johnston @Alex (0). David Knight (Top GM): The David Knight Award is presented to the top GM in the league, as of right now according to our vote it appears that it is likely going to end up in the hands of @Dom (4), the GM of the Malmo Nighthawks who are set to surpass last seasons point total all while losing significant pieces in the offseason Other GMs who received votes were; @Banackock (1), @rory (1), @Ricer13 (1), and @Spartan (1). Dustin Funk (Most Improved): The final award we’ll look at today is the Dustin Funk Award, this award is given to the player who shows the greatest amount of improvement and as expected had more players be predicted to win it than any other award. Surprisingly only 4 names were brought forward by VSN members and those were; Justin Lose (3), Joe Madison @samx (2), Alex Johnston (2), and Thadius Sales (1). Of the skaters listed all three have surpassed their previous career highs by 7, 8, and 8 points respectively. As for Sales, they currently have 1 more win and a GAA 0.01 better than their previous career high. Thank you for reading, and stay tuned as we watch how these races develop throughout the season! Best of luck to everyone in the race! animal74 1,809
Yeah, I'm resigning myself to the fact that as long as I'm in the same league as Idaho, I'm not going to win a Boulet. Miracles do happen though! Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/113462-vsn-presents-s81-vhl-awards-race/#findComment-896381 Share on other sites
