The consistency gets him in for me. Only 40 points behind Vikingstad despite having a season less and being a defenceman.

He might struggle even next season as there's a few first ballot options from S73 I think but probably has the best case of anyone else here except maybe Davis.

Yeah he might be a long term add but seems strong overall (I had forgotten originally that hylands played forward first).

i ended up finding this site using reddit and its really cool so far. i read through most of the rule book today and i think i understand what i need to do because i asked horcrux some questions and now i created a question thread for me so hopefully people will ask me questions. everyone has been really nice so far and the community seems like its really active. i was on the discord last night and got a bunch of people waving at me and it made me feel welcomed. i guess now i need to figure out a story for my player and im not sure what to write yet because i dont have a team and im not sure exactly still that happens because it says i can sign with a team but i also get drafted so im wondering when that might be but i dont know. i looked at the portal and saw previous drafts but not sure how the three leagues work entirely yet because it is a bit confusing but i was able to link my press conference and im starting to understand what i need to do to get points. thank you everyone for being so nice and im looking forward to jiouibgng a team really soon.

Hey if you need a hand at all, feel free to reach out!

Welcome to the league! Glad you are enjoying it so far.

Well that lines up with hatty claiming BM'd. Could be a ploy and both Barzal and Hatty are working together to give Hatty an excuse to not talk (BM is in Spy Invest results after all), but the Witch thing is interesting though since there's been no claims of being controlled on previous nights. @Advantage were you controlled last night?

Hey sorry work has been a time and a half today and for those that kept up with discord, will know I've not really been around much last two days.

I was indeed controlled by a witch last night.

    I am a Psychic.

    N1: N0HBDY, NSG88, or omgitshim is evil!

N2: BarzalGoat or MMFLEX is good!

N3: No results for me.  Controlled by a Witch.

To me, Su is easy easy lock.  3 seasons as arguably the best forward in the league and another couple where he hovered around the top-10 in scoring.  Add the award cabinet and it's on ice.

Hylands has 3 elite D-man seasons where he was probably top five at his position, while also having 3 top-5 goals finishes in other seasons.  So for at least 6 seasons, Chris Hylands was an elite player at his position.  He's a lock imo.

Letang...not sure how I feel.  Without last season, he probably never gets in.  Not sure how others view this since there are a lot of guys that wouldn't be in without one career season, but only voted once as a top-4 dman in the league isn't very HOF worthy imo.

  5. A Glimpse Into the Future: Rusty Cannon

Rusty Cannon is a man's man of a hockey player.  Gigantic, strong and a good skater, Cannon won't wow you offensively, but can bring it on the defensive end.  After signing with the Ottawa Lynx this past season, he has made an immediate impact on the backend for the Lynx who swept their first round matchup.  He is easily one of the strongest players in the VHLM and plays the role of stalwart.  He won't really get PP time or move the puck effectively up the ice.  However, he will be as reliable as it gets in his own zone.

When speaking to scouts, Cannon most closely resembles the Scott Stevens that patrolled the blueline in his prime.  Incredibly physical and known for lining opponents up, with great defensive work and good skating mixed with farmer strength, Cannon projects as a #2 defender in the VHL that can be paired with someone much more offensively inclined.

Cannon continues his journey in the playoffs and while he is pointless thus far, he is after a much greater prize.  Not someone who has won all that much at any level, Cannon is hoping to end some of that past with a Founders Cup Victory as a member of the Ottawa Lynx.

  6. Stepping Down as Cologne's GM

Earlier this week I stepped down as the Cologne Express General Manager, and indicated in the posting that I would explain a little bit further why at a later time. It was a decision that I had been toying with since about the mid way part of the season.

I should begin by stating jts been a difficult year mentally for myself.  Covid has obviously continued to impact life, I lost my job, I continue to battle health issues and I am going practically broke paying off debt while also paying for a wedding and saving for a house.  Also my Habs suck and continue to suck and thats sorta miserable.  At least I've got my Raptors and Scottie!

Anyway, when I took on Cologne I really thought I was going to have a long tenure but after accepting and before we went through with the draft, I started to feel concerned about a few of those above issues to a point where I debated calling it off beforehand.  Alas I chose to continue on as I figured I may be fine to go forward with it, but unfortunately my mental health has severely struggled.

I have a great fiancee and some very close friends that I've met through these leagues that I hang out with several times a week on discord.  It isn't your ideal situation to have with your best friends, but ultimately I work with people twenty years older and have far less in common with them.

Nevertheless, my support staff is fine and I'm a lot better off than most.  However, I have been feeling the drag lately and I think a lot of that is my tendency to take on more than I can really handle anymore.

I have been a General Manager in these league for a number of seasons.  Whether it be VHL, VHLM or now VHLE.  I still reside on the Board of Governors and while I feel my activity is inconsistent depending on the topic, I enjoy it and hope to continue on in that role.

I said to Acydburn and Victor in my PM to them resigning from my role, "I think I need to learn to be happy in the VHL without being a GM." It's been something I've struggled for while, the constant drag but also the enjoyment I get from being a GM in a league.  I love this league and don't want to leave it completely, but I certainly need to step a bit back and take care of myself.

I've been doing more things for myself lately.  I got my teeth completely taken care of after over twenty years of no dental care.  Recently did a cleanse to try and reset my diet and improve my health.  Focusing on self improvement on the job to so far staggering sales results in just my fourth month in the company.  This probably comes off braggy, but I assure you it's more me being surprised how happy I am that I've started taking steps to improving my life.  Unfortunately, the VHL had to be sacrificed slightly to achieve what I'd like to.

So I stepped down and ultimately will be leaving it in the hands of someone who has that drive I had when I was GM of New York, and will take the Express to greater heights than I could.  So for now I continue on with my current player and hope to focus on being in the discord a little more and enjoying my time without the need to worry about anything more than earning some TPE.

  7. A little bit of a late PC.

    1. I recently stepped down.  What does the next GM need to bring to the table for Cologne?

    2. Any reflections on the tough season we had where we missed the playoffs by one point?

  8. Rusty Cannon - Junior Review

    5d8c476e9638f.image.jpg?resize=400,267

Rusty Cannon announced today that he will be joining the VHLM as a deadline waiver pickup for a team to be determined in the next 48 hours.  The fan favourite player that has patrolled the blueline over the last four seasons for the Kelowna Rockets, will end his time out West with no Memorial Cup despite two appearances.  Ultimately, a case could be made that he was unable to lead his team to a title, but he certainly dragged them as far as he could, throwing his weight around and shutting down the opponents' best.  An anonymous coach in the WHL had this to say on gameplanning versus Cannon over the years:

“We are happy to see him go.  He tore us apart for four seasons and he was easily one of the hardest players to play against over that stretch.  No, we never really had to worry about him offensively, but he was a nightmare to try and score against.  And God forbid it go into a corner where our guys would just get their chests caved in.  Good luck to the VHLM and I hope he does well, but I have had enough of him.”

Cannon made an immediate impact when he joined the Rockets in his first season.  He was selected in the third round of the WHL Dispersal Draft but earned a spot on their third pairing out of camp after leading the entire WHL in hits during the preseason.  He struggled offensively but still managed to post 2 goals and 9 assists in 66 games to go along with his 275 hits and 138 blocked shots. The Rockets were a team on the rise but ultimately were eliminated in fourth place at the Memorial Cup.  That being said, they didn’t even win the WHL Championship, as they fell to the Tournament Host, Medicine Hat.

The second season was more of the same with Cannon dazzling fans with 331 hits and 152 blocked shots and even contributed 7 goals and 22 assists in 68 games.  More importantly, the Rockets managed to go all the way to the Western Conference Final but would fall to the Medicine Hat Tigers in six games.  It was a stretch of season that really showcased how well Cannon plays in tight important games as he dominated much of that playoff run.

Rusty’s third season unfortunately was not as long as he hoped. In the fourteenth game of the season, Cannon was slew footed into the boards and ended up tearing his acl.  He wouldn’t play another game and finished the season with a solid 4 goals and 7 assists to go along with 52 hits and 29 blocked shots.  It was easily the most impressive he had been offensively since joining the Western Hockey League, but it’s unfortunate we missed out on seeing the rest of this promising campaign.

Rusty’s fourth and final season was definitely his best.  Sporting the ‘C’ for the first time, Cannon took off on what became easily his best campaign, making up for a lot of time lost last season.  Rusty tallied 11 goals and 47 assists and added 356 hits and 164 blocked shots, and led the charge throughout the playoffs as the Rockets would once again reach the Memorial Cup.  Cannon anchored them to the Championship Game with a dominant defensive showing but ultimately the team fell short after a tough overtime loss to the host Tigers.

It was a tough end to the run for Rusty, but it’s promising to see just how much he grew as an overall defenseman over his four years in Kelowna.  He was such an integral player for the Rockets and an absolute nemesis of so many forwards in the league.  Next up, it is time to see who will show interest in the young South African defender, and will Cannon actually be able to win a title?

  9. CANNON SIGNS WITH LYNX

Rusty Cannon has signed a one year deal with the Ottawa Lynx, reportedly worth 1.5 Million Dollars.  He will join the Lynx in a third pairing role, a team that has obliterated VHLM competition with a 44-8-2 record, good enough for second best in the league.  This is what he had to say during a press conference earlier this evening:

“I am thrilled to be able to join Ottawa for the rest of this season.  They are a talented team and to get a chance to play regular minutes on a championship contender, you just can’t pass that up.  I hope to get my VHLM career started with a Founder’s Cup and help bury some of the Memorial Cup burdens I have after two defeats.  I want to thank the team for trusting me and I am excited to get to Ottawa in order to make an impact right away.  I have never been to Ottawa so I am excited to explore the town and get to know my new teammates.”

Cannon is coming off a disappointing Memorial Cup defeat with the Kelowna Rockets.  A tournament that he starred in until a crucial mistake in the Championship Game cost them their chance to win.  The Lynx are banking on Rusty’s physicality and generally stalwart defensive play, and while he won’t bring a lot of offense, he can chip in here and there.

  10. 1. Today I created a new player in the VHL.  Any plans for your next VHL player name?

    2. What is the one thing you would change about the VHL if you could?

    3. Any aspirations to ever become a GM or hold any other major position?

    4. Anime Protagonist has dominated many of the 14 games he has played this season.  How big has he been in his backup role for the team?

    5. What is the next area you want to improve on with your player?

    6. Can Cologne hang with the big dogs come playoff time?

  11. Tyler Walker: Definition of Talented Mediocrity

    Kole-Lind.jpg

Tyler Walker recently announced that he will be retiring at the end of the season.  The defender who finds himself playing his eighth season in the VHL on the dominant Moscow Menace team, is hoping to add a Continental Cup to his rather empty resume.  “It’s what I have always wanted.  I haven’t been able to win at this level and it has felt like I’m the problem.  I have to hope this season can be different.”  Not inspiring words coming out of Walker’s mouth, but then again he isn’t wrong.

He was the epitome of a good player on a bad team for much of his career, but one has to honestly wonder if he is the consistent piece that hurt the team in the end.  Assuming Moscow makes the playoffs this year, Walker will have made the playoffs in five of his eight VHL seasons, but the lack of success has been mind-boggling.  He was knocked out in the first round in both seasons he made it with Calgary and played on both Malmo Nighthawks teams that got knocked out in the second round during the S73 and S74 campaigns.  He also spent his prime years playing on a Davos Dynamo team that missed the playoffs in each of Season 75, 76 and 77.

Walker wasn’t untalented though as he currently sits with 517 points, 1131 hits and 1189 blocked shots over the course of 561 career games.  He has been a stat padder ever since he randomly decided to hit back in Season 76, after recording just 73 hits over his first three seasons.  If he adds two more goals this season he will have also recorded double-digit goals eight times and has been a beacon of consistency, never recording less than 52 points in a season. His 90 point campaign in S77 was easily his highlight year, as he added 290 hits and 165 blocked shots.  However, one look at his -43 plus/minus and his abundance of penalties and you see perhaps the biggest reason he has never won any awards or had any team success. Let the record show that I don’t consider his Founder’s Cup victory in S72 an example of being a born winner or anything as even during that run he struggled at times.

The remainder of the S80 campaign could certainly change some of this narrative.  The Moscow Menace have been a dominant team and certainly have the means to win the Continental Cup.  Walker has even been a lot more disciplined this season after tallying 630 penalty minutes over the previous four seasons (2.19 PIM/G), he has only taken 63 penalty minutes over this 57 game campaign so far (1.10 PIM/G).  Hard to say though and it certainly won’t really change too much about his legacy.  He has been a good player this year but is more of just an accessory to the Menace’s best players, and ultimately that has been the only way he’s ever found success.

He will not be a Hall of Fame player.  He never was good enough to win an Award.  He couldn’t win the big one.  He only really ever had team success when he wasn’t one of the team’s best players.  Tyler Walker was the definition of talented mediocrity.

I know VHL has had a mentorship program in the past based on posts I've seen on the forums, but I can't find any information about it. Can someone who was around during that time offer a bit of insight about how it worked and why it was abandoned?

Only thing I sorta remember is they would PM new members and sorta act as an all knowing guide in how to get started in the VHL.

I dont remember much beyond that.

I would certainly be in favour of it.  Between that and our current ability to recruit, we would do quite well in retaining members.  I also think it takes off some of the strain on VHLM GMs and gives our new members the best chance to stick around.

  13. 11 minutes ago, Victor said:

They seem pretty close based off your post on the top 10 appearances tbh. I mentioned Vikingstad because at least Oferson has 80 odd more goals. They're both long shots I'd agree and in the absence of Vaak perhaps both shouldn't be there.

Unlike Kellinger or even Kohler, I don't think either will ever look HOF worthy.

  14. 5 hours ago, Victor said:

Considered adding Vaakanainen, but he has no awards, no cups (although 4 finals losses), and no all-VHL appearances (no seasons in which he hit 100 points).

That said, he had 2 more points than Vikingstad, and the most playoff points of anyone not named Campbell (116, albeit in 96 games which is 5th most all time). Which suggests to me that maybe Vikingstad should be coming off instead, especially as the 600-point plateau is increasingly less impressive again.

Anyway, Su and Hylands are first ballot HOFers for me, Hylands maybe could have lost out to someone in a stronger year but not sure there's anyone with a better case. Given Josh's recent promotion, would suggest no Builder this time?

I'd take Oferson off before just based on our research last vote, but yes this is Su and Hylands for sure.

And yeah I'd stay away from builder this time.
