I was inspired to do this since there haven’t been that many posts looking at the lasting effects of trades and the only one that has done this can't be viewed. I love the trade tree videos by Sportsnet and wanted to pay homage to them with this important deal that involved three* Hall of Famers being sent to the Wranglers. It also partially led to the Seattle Bears winning four continental cups. So let’s begin.

 Calgary Wranglers:
The initial trade is this: to Calgary; Matt Thompson, Maxim Kovalchuk, Sebastian Ironside, and an S67 SEA fourth; to Seattle; Lando Baxter, Włodzimierz Zajączkowski, an S66 CGY first, an S67 CGY 1st, and two S67 second-rounders.
Let's look at the Calgary side first. Matt Thompson had had four incredible seasons with Seattle and one pretty good one. He won the Boulet and the Funk in S62 with 150 points, a total which in any other year would have netted him the Campbell. Unfortunately, Podrick Cast had an even better year at 179 points preventing Thompson from achieving MVP. In S64 he was able to win the Slobodz, Boulet, Brooks, and Szatkowski along with a victory cup with 110 points and 56 goals. He was able to repeat the victory cup the next season with Seattle before being sent in the trade.
The next HOF player is Maxim Kovalchuk. Maxim started his career with a stellar 117 points as well as a Valiq trophy. Two seasons later he was able to acquire a Wylde trophy along with a victory cup alongside Thompson. He would then have a breakthrough year in S65 winning the Beketov, Wylde again, and a Labatte.
The final HOF is Sebastian Ironside. Ironside only played one season with the Bears putting up 109 points and winning the victory cup. He was likely brought in for a go-for-broke season before being shipped off to Calgary in this deal.
Now Matt Thompson never actually played for the Wranglers. After being traded he signed with the Helsinki Titans so his line of the tree ends here.
Sebastian Ironside's part of the tree also ends here but he played for the Calgary Wranglers putting up 238 points in three seasons with the wranglers.
Now onto the second longest part of Calgary’s side, the 4th rounder. The fourth was packaged with an S67 DAV second and sent to the Seattle Bears for Vyacheslav Smirnov. Smirnov put up 82 points with the Calgary Wranglers before retiring. The second was used by the Bears to select Henrik Zoidberg. Zoidberg played in four seasons with the Bears putting up 180 points winning 2 continental Cups with them as well before being sent to the Menace. The fourth was used to select Kevin Lowe. He put up 92 points in two seasons before moving to the Americans.
And now for the longest branch of the Calgary side, Maxim Kovalchuk. After one season in Calgary where he put up 86 points he was sent back to the Bears. The trade was as follows: Maxim Kovalchuk, John Frostbeard, and an S69 CGY 3rd to Seattle for Joel Ylonen. After this trade Maxim would go on to win two continental cups with Seattle putting up 184 points in three seasons. John Frostbeard also won two continental cups with Seattle putting up 187 points with them over 3 seasons. The third was traded.
Joel Ylonen put up 69 points, a career-high, in his only season with Calgary before being traded back to the Bears, A pretty regular thing at this point. That trade was: Joel Ylonen going to the bears for Thorny Underyew, the previously featured S69 CGY 3rd, and an S70 SEA 1st. After returning to the bears Joel put up 127 points in two seasons on route to two continentals. Underyew put up 38 points in his two seasons with the Wranglers before being released. The third-rounder was used to select Kim Jong Un, He never made it to the VHL. The first-rounder was not used by Calgary, it was traded.
The trade was: A S70 SEA 1st and two S71 3rds to Davos for Charlie Paddywagon. Davos would use the first to select Shawn Glade Jr. who would only play a season with Davos. One of the thirds was used to select Big Chungus, he didn’t pan out, and the other third was traded. Charlie Paddywagon in his four seasons with the wranglers produced 216 points winning a victory cup in S72. However, in continuing the trend of players being traded back to the team that they were traded from, he was sent to Davos, the trade being: Davos reacquires Charlie paddywagon in exchange for an S74 HSK 2nd and an S74 NYA 4th. The fourth was used to select Kuisma Aki, he hasn’t made it yet. The second-rounder though was traded.
The trade was: the S74 HSK 2nd going to the Legion for an S76 TOR second and an S76 TOR 3rd. The Legion would use that 2nd to select Nicholas Sunderbruch who's been doing quite nicely for himself there. The 3rd was used by Calgary on JL Gunnar, he hasn’t made it to the VHL yet. The second on the other hand was traded, though it isn’t the main part of this deal.
This massive trade is as follows: Warsaw acquires Latrell Mitchell, Willie Dredge, an S75 SEA 1st, and the S76 TOR 2nd in exchange for Alex Bridges, Arthur Dayne, and an S75 WAR 1st. Latrell has been a great asset for the Predators putting up 209 points in 189 games and is currently third in defenseman scoring. Willie Dredge produced 112 points in 2 seasons with the predators before retiring. Both the first and second were traded. Alex Bridges produced 87 points in his two seasons with Calgary before retiring. Arthur Dayne put up 58 points in S75 before being traded at the deadline. This trade was: Arthur Dayne going to the Malmo Nighthawks for Lewis Dawson and an S76 MAL 1st. Arthur Dayne would finish S75 with 78 points and win a continental cup. Lewis Dawson was traded. This deal was: Lewis Dawson and an S77 CGY 3rd going to Riga for Liam Fischl, an S76 MAL 2nd, and an S76 DAV 4th. Lewis Dawson Was traded again and the Reign have yet to use that 3rd. Liam Fischl has put up 10 points in his rookie season so far and could become a staple player with the rate he’s updating at. The 2nd was used to grab Germano Henchoz who may be inactive. However, he was also traded. That trade was: Germano Henchoz and an S79 CGY 4th to DC for ClapbombsRUs. In his first full season in the M he had a winning season. The fourth was traded. This trade was: The S76 DAV 4th and S76 LDN 3rd to the Dragons for an S76 DCD 2nd. The 3rd was used on ClapbombsRus who is turning out to be a solid goalie for Miami. The 4th was used on Nathan Askarov who is inactive. The 2nd was traded again, this time to London along with an S76 DCD 4th for an S77 MOS 2nd. The United used the 2nd to draft Dexter Vaughn who is a rising goaltender for the 21st, and the 4th to draft Adrian McAllister who is inactive. Back to the Arthur Dayne trade. That S76 MAL first was traded along with an S77 CGY 2nd to the Vancouver Wolves for Riley Couture, Sheldon Juniper, and an S77 VAN 3rd. The 1st was used by the Wolves to select Jivere Zolnek, a surprise playoff performer in the S75 playoffs. Riley Couture has put up 65 points in 72 games with the Wranglers and is looking to be a great player. Sheldon Juniper is also doing quite well in his rookie season with 38 points. The S77 VAN 3rd was involved in a trade. The trade was as follows: The S77 VAN 3rd, an S77 DCD 2nd, an S78 CGY 2nd, and an S77 WAR 4th to Malmo for an S76 MOS 1st and an S76 MAL 4th. The 1st was used to draft Magnus Verlander who’s putting up a strong performance in Mexico City. The 4th was used to draft Carter Bellamy who’s doing a decent job as a backup in Minnesota. And so we return to the Latrell Mitchell trade. The S75 WAR first acquired by Calgary was traded as well. The trade was: The S75 WAR 1st and an S76 CGY 4th to Chicago for A S76 CHI 1st and 3rd. Chicago used that 1st to draft L who won the Stolzschweiger in S75. The 4th was traded. The S76 CHI 1st rounder was traded to the United for an S77 MOS 1st. The S76 CHI 3rd was traded along with an S76 RIG 1st to the LA Stars for an S76 LAS 1st. The 3rd and 1st were used to select Ghengis Khan and Hulk Hogan Jr. respectively. The S76 LAS 1st that was sent to the Wranglers was used to select Tom Eagles. And so the Calgary side of the tree is done, so far, or so it was until very recently when Calgary traded Liam Fischl, who they acquired from Riga, and an S77 MOS 2nd, which they acquired from London, to New York for Cowboy Prout. Prout in his first season so far has put up 52 points in 71 games. And now, so far, this side of the tree has ended.

Seattle Bears:
Lando Baxter spent one season in Seattle putting up a career-high 59 points before being traded to the Legion. That trade was: Lando Baxter to the Toronto Legion for Chace Trepanier and Johannes Vihjalmsson. Lando Baxter went on to put up 108 points in two seasons with the Legion before moving to Davos. Vihjalmsson never played for the Bears, he was released soon after the trade. Chace Trepanier also never played for the Bears, he was traded to the Americans. The trade was: Chace Trepanier going to the New York Americans for Carles Puigdemont. Chace put up 18 points in his final season with the Americans before retiring. Carles was traded again. However, this trade also involves another piece from this tree so we will get back to it later.
Wlodz, I am not spelling the full name out again, didn’t play for the bears because he was traded. The trade was: Wlodz to Toronto for an S68 MOS 4th. Wlodz put up 31 points in his final season with Toronto before retiring. The S68 MOS 4th was used by Seattle to draft Justin Rushmore, he never got to the VHL.
The S66 CGY 1st was used to draft Shane Mars. Shane Mars in his first season with the Bears put up 46 goals, 48 assists for 94 points in S66. This was good enough for him to win the Stolzschweiger that year. Unfortunately, he was not able to recapture that total ever again. In his next two seasons, he put up 62 points total before being signed by DC.
The S67 CGY 1st was used to draft Acyd Burn 7th overall. After a strong season with Halifax in S66 Burn would go on to have a strong four seasons with Seattle tallying 265 points in four seasons and as well as anyone that played with Seattle in S68 and 69, won two continental cups. However, going into the S71 season, he was traded. That trade was: Acyd Burn and an S72 DCD 3rd going to the Malmo Nighthawks for Markus Nygren and an S72 MAL 1st. Acyd Burn would go on to put up 23 points in 38 games when Malmo traded him to Riga for quite a lot; however, that will not be discussed today. The 3rd was traded back to Seattle but it will not be a part of this tree. Markus Nygren produced 67 points in his two seasons with Seattle before being claimed in the expansion draft by LA. In that time he won a single continental cup in S71. The S72 MAL 1st was used by Seattle to select Randy Marsh. Randy, who is still playing for the Bears, has put up 211 points in the five seasons he’s been there along with 14 playoff points. In that time he’s won a continental cup and a victory cup with the bears.
The S67 CGY 2nd was used by Seattle to select Berocka Sundqvist. Berocka in his time in Seattle was a staple player of the late 60s-early 70s Seattle dynasty. He put up 437 points in his time with Seattle winning four continental cups, a victory cup, and a Beketov in S72. He kept up the scoring in the playoffs with 59 points in 90 games. He had a career-high in points in S73 with 93 points beating his previous record set the year prior by one point. He has since then retired and this branch ends.
The S67 HSK 2nd was used to select Kefka Palazzo. Before he could play for Seattle he was traded to New York. That trade was: Kefka Palazzo and Edgar Tannehill to New York for an S68 HSK 2nd. Kefka Palazzo was traded again. Edgar Tannehill put up one point in NYA before retiring. The S68 HSK 2nd was used to select Finnegan Macburn. Finnegan was traded. This trade was: Carles puigdemont, Boone Jenton, Finnegan MacBurn, a S69 MAL 4th and a S70 NYA 4th to DC for a S71 DCD 4th. Carles Puigdemont never played for DC, he was traded. Boone Jenton Played in one season with DC putting up 7 points before being traded as well. Finnegan never made it to the VHL. The two players picked by DC using the two 4th rounders were Igor Trice and Crush Cile, neither made it as well. The S71 DCD 4th acquired by the Bears was used to draft Peter Louis, he also never made it.
And so this trade tree has come to an end. Over 2,000 words of wheeling and dealing from over 3/4ths of the league. Nearly every team was in some way involved in this trade tree and if more trades are to come the tree will expand further and further. On the question of who won this trade, I think that the answer so far is pretty clear. Seattle with their four cups since this trade has been the clear winner but, the tree hasn’t ended. The Calgary side is still going with multiple strong prospects and a future of possible trades. The total stat rollout is 1039 points for the Calgary Wranglers. The Bears had 1195* points, four continental cups, a Beketov, and a Stolzschweiger. Calgary could turn this around if some of their players develop well and become staples but for right now the dominant team in this trade is the Bears. With their four cups and multiple trophies, without a doubt the bears have won this trade. However, if a few trades come about to extend this tree I will add them as well.

*The points counted only involve those on the Seattle side, not the Calgary side. Word count is 2506

I remember noob me seeing the second Thompson rights deal (to Malmo, I think it was just Thompson for a 2nd) go down and thinking it was a lot to give up for a player's rights. Took us to the cup finals though so I can't complain.

Malmo never traded for my rights, Davos did I believe. I simply signed with Malmo. Both times a team traded for my rights I signed elsewhere actually because neither time the team actually was an interesting one for me; they just traded a bunch in hopes that I would be interested and then got mad when I wasn’t.

I guess I just remember spending a while trying to convince you to sign and with there being a rights deal that offseason figured it involved Malmo. I do remember the Davos thing going down now that you mention it though.

Mars strikes again!
